OK.. so I am new, and excited. I have had alot happen to my trusty old tmobile pocket pc phone over the last two days.
First, I got it unlocked by tmobile two days ago and then switched to ATT. Big big plus for me here where I live as my tmobile service would not work at home, SMS and voicemail notifications were rarely recieved. So far so good with ATT, in fact I get the notifications almost instantly, and I have FULL service with ATT at my home now.
Ok.. then yesterday and today I got interested in the idea of upgrading to the 2003 software. Went ahead and bit the bullet and did it. So far so good. I am now running:
ROM Version: 4.00.21 ENG
ROM Date: 8/11/03
Radio Version: 6.18.00
Protocol Version: 324e4
I have not noticed any real issues yet. I have noticed that it locked up on me once when changing a theme I believe. But I did a soft reset and the change was made, I then changed it to another theme to test and no problem.
I dont seem to have the sliding backlight settings I noticed some where else. But I do think like the signal bar meter better as it is clearer now to the eye when you have even one bar. As well as love the mute, and the dual volume slider.
I thought I read there was a higher version radio stack some where, but I have to find that again.
All in all very happy. Happy with the new ROM and tools and forums made available by XDA-Developers, happy with ATT service and hope to be reporting back more good news in the future.
ok.. figured out the sliding backlight
I guess I got confused and thought the sliding backlight control I saw was related to the 2003 ROM, when in fact I guess it was seen by me on the XDA version 2. So, that clears that up for me.
Now to just get the newest radio stack...

No problem on the radio stack, I just need confirmation on what network you're on AT&T or T-Mobile so I'll know which stack to send.
Also I'll need an email address to send to, PM me on that.
BTW good work on the upgrade.
thank
OK.. radio is now updated to A.20.10 which should be the latest ATT radio version correct ? I have noticed one odd thing about after I upgraded to the ATT radio is that it no longer says what network I am connected to as it did with the tmobile radio.
I also noticed something stange with the 2003 software and GPRS. Seems there is no "end" option to end the GPRS connection.
All in all I am pleasantly surprised about how easy and smooth all has gone in doing all of this. I like the always connected GPRS.
thanks
Yes you are correct A.20.10 is the latest ATT radio stack!
Good obs on noticing that the AT&T stack doesn't show what network you're using, it was also the first thing I noticed too!
Yea the only way to end GPRS now its to press the Red phone button or buy Spb GPRS Monitor

Congratulations on the unlocking! 8)
As far as upgrading to Pocket PC Phone edition 2003 you can build your own from Jeff's kitchen at:
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen/
or you can download it from Yorch's web site at:
http://www.yorch.net
Note: its located under software.
BTW what radio stack does your SX56 currently have if its less than A.20.10 you'll want to upgrade that too?
HTH
Well lets just say I loved my SX56 when I first saw it, bought it, worked great upgraded it with the AT&T WM2003 ROM, now it is just a pretty PDA that can some times do phone.
The radio stack upgrade just destroyed what little signal I was alredy getting on my SX56. Now I GET NOTHING. IT IS DISCUSSTING.
If any one knows how I can get back a original 2002 ROM and radio stack??????
Anyone knows please email me at [email protected]
Can someone tell me what the Qtek V1640 is?
I have been looking on the web and can't really find any information about it in English.
I've been looking to upgrade my O2 XDA II to an HTC Universal and have found that Vodafone are able to supply the V1640 which they believe to be the same as the Qtek 9000 which I can see from trawling through loads of info is the same as the XDA Exec (or almost).
Does this mean the V1640 is the same device?
Is it the same spec or is it a cut down version?
Does someone have a comparison sheet available for all the different versions of the HTC Universal?
Hi there,
I left Vodafone recently to get an O2 Exec. Their retentions team promised me they could get me a Qtek 1640V which they repeatedly promised was their name for a Qtek 9000, ie an HTC Universal. I spoke to loads of different people and they all promised the same thing.
So, I waited (lots of mistakes over delivery) and waited and eventually I received a Qtek 16*20* V... which is an HTC Blue Angel. Furious, I called up... everyone now insistent that the 1640 is unavailable from Vodafone.
Got my Exec now and it's beautiful, just beautiful.
My advice? Avoid vodafone if you want to ever get your hands on a Universal.
Matt S.
Hi Matt
Yeah I read your post before posting this one.
I orginally was with O2 but there service was appalling so I moved across to Vodafone I've had some serious difficulties with Vodafone in the past but persistence paid off and they are now very VERY helpful... In fact much more so than O2 every were so doubt I will ever go back to O2.
I know Vodafone are preparing the full launch of the product so they are likely to be suffering supply problems just now before they do.
Before they do and before I spend my free upgrade on the VP1640 I want to make sure it is up to spec.
Do you or does anyone else have any more information that can shed light on the VP1640 please?
Anyone can help out on this?
Received the V1640. Nice looking device.
Photo's to follow shortly.
In fact received 2 One for myself and another for my partner.
I can confirm I have a V1640, took me telling me they did them before i got one, but it is definatelty a Universal!

i've been using my jam for about 4 months now and i had horrible reception with it since i brought it to America, when i used in Saudi Arabia i never had a reception issue. Well for the last week and couple days i've been using this extremely old nokia 3590 and i get full reception with it, specially in my house where i would usually have no reception with the jam. my jam i forgot if my jam is the 850 or 900mhz jam. i know cingular runs on 1900mhz and another i think 850mhz. Well does anyone have issues with reception on a "foriegn" network? and know of a solution?
What Rom Ver are you running there and what is the radio stack ver , sometimes it helps to change the radio stack . . . upgrading it or downgrading it . There's quite a few posts regarding radio updates.
Cheers
horriable reception!!
I used mine in india whilst trekking no probs. I regularly travel all over the world and have had no issues wit phone use. Except takes alittle while to log in to a network.
isnt there a version which is 900 1800 800 /1900 mhz for the US ?
Im sure I read it some where.
maybe your not picking up all the transmitters.
i'm on Rom version 1.12.00 WWE Radio Version 1.13.00 protocol 1337.43 and ExtRom 1.12.167
Mine is the 850/1800/1900 and i think cingular runs on 900 aswell as 1900, also the old at&t network which is now cingular is 850 so why am i not getting good reception? i was reading theres a bigstorage rom where you can select the mhz frequency you want the antenna to run on.. anyone know if that would be a fix?

I don't think it is the hardware. I'm using an XDA Mini, which is the European version. It is loaded with the Imate softare off of this site, and I pick up Cingular towers (though my service is through T-Mobile). You might try updating your ROM.
I am in the LA area.
ROM 1.13.00 WWE
Radio 1.12.10 1337.42
ExtRom 1.12.188 WWE (But I have modified to BigStore)
you can download the radio freq select cab file on its own , do a search on the forum for something to that effect as its somewhere.
then you can manual select them.
thanks for the updated info. Steve, thanks for the info, knowing your using a "foriegn" magician in the us helps me a little. right now i'm downloading the latest WWE rom from the FTP site, i think its 11200_188_11210. if thats not the lastest, please advise me so i can get the latest rom.
also steve your on 1.13.00 because your using the bigstorage correct?
FrankenMini!

Well, it is a long story. I went to the UK site and downloaded their upgrade program. Then I backed up my ROM, and used the NOID program to update the UK ROM. The actual EXE file at the UK site won't work unless the device is actually from the UK, hence the "NoID" version of the updater has to be used. BTW, ActiveSync needs to be in normal mode (USB "checked") and the Magician has to be in Boot Loader mode when the NoID upgrader program is executed. The documentation was a bit inconclusive on these two points. The above combination worked on my unit.
At that point I had a latest UK version ROM, and it worked fine. But now I had the "upgrade bug", and wanted to customize everything. Taking a deep breath...
I discovered the addresses for the Extended storage and changed them to make that ROM a BigStorage ROM. There was already a UK version Big Storage available on the ftp site, but for some reason it would not complete the boot after flashing the ROM. Anyway, I ended up with the UK ROM modified for Big Storage, and decided to use the latest released IMATE Extended ROM utilities. Then I changed the boot screen and - there it is. OK, OK, so I do things the long way...
I tried the UK Ext ROM stuff also, but they have things that do not apply to the US T-Mobile, such as Blackberry push from their servers. So my unit is a hybrid...
Just call it FrankenMini!
The only co$t is for a 256 mb SD card to contain the ROM image as you transfer it to and from the PC. Actually, 128Mb would do, but the 256 was just about as cheap.

thanks for all this information, and sorry to have you go through all this, but i've just figured out a simple fix.... I'm going to trade in my jam for a k-jam, since its quad band and it runs on WM5.0 i think i'll be happier with it. although its a little thicker i think i'm gonna go ahead with the transition.
Thank you again for all your info, but does anyone know where i can get a picture of the jam next to the k-jam, i remember some site had pics of them together but i can't seem to find it now.

K-Jam is OK as well, but I would never use the keyboard and it is too thick for me. The JAM is just right.
I updated from http://www.my-xda.com/xda2i_soft2.html but didn't get the new radio version, and got the .169 rom version that is supposedly so bad.
Sooooo ummmm......What do you think is going on?
Is anyone else chaseing this, because due to major family problems I just don't have time at the moment! I can't afford to re-flash my Xda again, it can't be out of action!
**Edit - I did this yesterday. They could have fixed it since.
Not you going wrong, O2 have withdrawn the 1.11.170 ROM because of the connection and stability issues mentioned elsewhere on this site.
If you want stability and don't use Blackberry, use the ROM I made that can be found on this site. Have a look in the few recent threads here and you will find them.
Sorry to hear about your problems, hope they're sorted soon for the better.
Take care of yourself,
PUG.
I had got confused. I'll try it after christmas, once things have settled down. I'll just have to put up with no bluetooth for now
Will my warrenty/insurance be valid if I use an unoffical ROM?
Officially yes but there's always way around that.
O2 do state that only ROMs released by themselves are supported but those of us who have customised their 2i's know that most of the problems with the 2i are down to O2's software in the extended ROM causing the problems.
More often than not, most companies like that will not worry about what ROM is on the phone so long as it was released officially by a company for an Alpine device and it's not a cooked WM5 when it's never been released if you know what I mean.
Anyway, good luck and Merry Christmas.
Pug
I must say that after the last rom upgrade (69) was released and I had problems with it, o2 data support actually recomended that I install the rom from this site!! So that should tell us all something, should it not!?!?!?
Rom Updates...
Pug is spot on - .169 caused my BT headset to play up no end, but rather than re-flash to the vanilla .162 rom, I used Pug's with the 1.04 radio. This is the best of the available 02 roms, imho. BT fine, and the radio upgrade improves signal strength and clarity - nice one, Pug! BTW I also downgraded Caller ID, which solved my GPRS connection issues, and fitted a bigger battery. I am now happy to use my Alpine as my only phone, which was the plan in the first place...
Merry Xmas all

Then they say to people that to do so would invalidate their warranties. I just shout at them and tell them exactly what I want them to do for me, that sorted my last problem, didn't give them chance to read the script that said "hard reset". Wish they'd all sing from the same hymn sheet. Still, you pay peanuts you get monkies don't you.......
I actully got o2data support to send me a copy of 162 rom on a disk as they did not have it on their website, so I can always reflash back to that if I need to send the xda in for repair during it's warrenty. Thinking about it, is it worth me putting this (162) rom on the ftp site so anyone can reflash with it?
Please do, I am about to get a 2i and I plan to experiment as soon as I get it but I would like the .162 ROM to fall back on as it seems to be the most stable official release,
Thanks
Sorry it has taken a couple of days (but it is xmas   ) but I have put the 1.11.162 official o2 rom on the ftp site (ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Alpine/) I have uplaoded a .rar and the .exe versions hope they may be of some use to you.

I updated from this file aswell, and my Radio downgraded(?) to 1.00!
Not only this, but I applied the TomTom 5.21 upgrade at the same time, and TomTom stopped working - well, it started to lose the gps connection when i had the speaker cable for my GPS cradle plugged in and TomTom emitted a sound!
I reinstalled TomTom back to 5.1, and still got the problem, so I hard reset the XDA - same problem still!
I have now installed the .162 ExtRom with 1.04 Radio, and this seems to have solved the problem as far as TomTom is concerned, even with the latest 5.21 update. The real test will be tomorrow when I take her indoors to work in the morning, as so far (due to the snow!) I have only tested TomTom sat stationary outside the house!
Getting back to the point, though, I think I will be giving the .169 ExtRom a miss from now on!
UPDATE : I've finally gotten out and about in the car, and Installing the .162 ExtRom has solved my TTN5 problem
