Whoo hoo 4.00.21 success! :-) - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

OK.. so I am new, and excited. I have had alot happen to my trusty old tmobile pocket pc phone over the last two days.
First, I got it unlocked by tmobile two days ago and then switched to ATT. Big big plus for me here where I live as my tmobile service would not work at home, SMS and voicemail notifications were rarely recieved. So far so good with ATT, in fact I get the notifications almost instantly, and I have FULL service with ATT at my home now.
Ok.. then yesterday and today I got interested in the idea of upgrading to the 2003 software. Went ahead and bit the bullet and did it. So far so good. I am now running:
ROM Version: 4.00.21 ENG
ROM Date: 8/11/03
Radio Version: 6.18.00
Protocol Version: 324e4
I have not noticed any real issues yet. I have noticed that it locked up on me once when changing a theme I believe. But I did a soft reset and the change was made, I then changed it to another theme to test and no problem.
I dont seem to have the sliding backlight settings I noticed some where else. But I do think like the signal bar meter better as it is clearer now to the eye when you have even one bar. As well as love the mute, and the dual volume slider.
I thought I read there was a higher version radio stack some where, but I have to find that again.
All in all very happy. Happy with the new ROM and tools and forums made available by XDA-Developers, happy with ATT service and hope to be reporting back more good news in the future.

ok.. figured out the sliding backlight
I guess I got confused and thought the sliding backlight control I saw was related to the 2003 ROM, when in fact I guess it was seen by me on the XDA version 2. So, that clears that up for me.
Now to just get the newest radio stack...

No problem on the radio stack, I just need confirmation on what network you're on AT&T or T-Mobile so I'll know which stack to send.
Also I'll need an email address to send to, PM me on that.
BTW good work on the upgrade.

thank
OK.. radio is now updated to A.20.10 which should be the latest ATT radio version correct ? I have noticed one odd thing about after I upgraded to the ATT radio is that it no longer says what network I am connected to as it did with the tmobile radio.
I also noticed something stange with the 2003 software and GPRS. Seems there is no "end" option to end the GPRS connection.
All in all I am pleasantly surprised about how easy and smooth all has gone in doing all of this. I like the always connected GPRS.
thanks

Yes you are correct A.20.10 is the latest ATT radio stack!
Good obs on noticing that the AT&T stack doesn't show what network you're using, it was also the first thing I noticed too!
Yea the only way to end GPRS now its to press the Red phone button or buy Spb GPRS Monitor

Congratulations on the unlocking! 8)
As far as upgrading to Pocket PC Phone edition 2003 you can build your own from Jeff's kitchen at:
http://cuba.calyx.nl/~jsummers/ROMkitchen/
or you can download it from Yorch's web site at:
http://www.yorch.net
Note: its located under software.
BTW what radio stack does your SX56 currently have if its less than A.20.10 you'll want to upgrade that too?

Windows Mobile 2003 for Siemens SX56?

I have been reading the reports of the people who have upgraded to WM2003 using the T-Mobile POcket PC Phone Editions. Has anybody heard anything about ATTWS? Has anybody used this upgrade on a Siemens SX56, since they are the same hardware?
Thanks,
u can use it if u want. u might want to keep att radio stack and load up t-mobile 2003. that would be the safest way to go. then disable t-mobile configuration
alex
I have it running on my unit. My impression so far is that I can't see much difference. The GPRS does not connect as readily as the ATTWS radio stack nor does it hold the connection as well. The WME 2003 has a few nice features but nothing to make the change a must. The biggest plus is a battery icon at the bottom of the display and it includes 2 of the 5 Clearview modules. For an ATTWS user that is about it except that I think the volume may be better on calls. I am going to try it for a day and then I will probably go back to the ATTWS radio stack. As far as signal strength indicator I cannot see any improvement and it may actually be worse.
I am in Southern CA, don't know if that makes any difference.

Which Radio Stack works best on T-Mobile USA in Florida?

I have the T-Mobile PPC and I have upgraded it to the T-Mo WM2003 ROM. I like this ROM due in large part to the windows voice command. Anyways it says under my system settings that my radio is 6.02. I am not getting very good reception, not just on the screen but I'm missing calls and dropping calls as well. Someone else on the forums said to try to find someone in my area whos using a good RS. So does anyone have any help from my area? Or just in general what's worked best for people? I know some are using ATT upgrade as well. Please let me know, thanks.
Go to < http://www.yorch.net/upgrades.htm > He has the latest T-Mobile RSU.
I has the same problem with T-Mobile. My answer was to switch to AT&T.
Good Luck,
Carey
The newest radio stack on yorch.net is unofficial. Is anyone using this unofficial radio stack?
Hey everyone, I had to finally switch to a different phone because I was just dropping calls everywhere. But recently spoke to someone and they advised using a new RSU. Can anyone tell me what RS they seem to get the best service on?
I have been using the Radio Stack version 6.25.02 along with the ROM version 4.00.21 ENG. The combination works best for me on my SX56 with the T-Mobile USA service.

I've been using SX56 too but I live in Asia with diffrent phone service. My ROM v3.17.03 ENG and Radio vA.20.10 and the reception is also weak. Is that combo also can work best in here? I also want to know is it true that using particular RS in diffrent area/service also have diffrent performance, or it is just a same everywhere with any services? Can anyone explained to me? Thanks.
I tracked down RSU 6.25.02 but when I tried to do the upgrade it wouldn't work. I tried a couple different ones actually. I took the 4 files and placed them in the Windows\Startup folder. Then reset with no luck. Then I put the 4 files in the Windows folder and just the exe in the Startup. But still no luck. So finally I tried a different upgrade and that one just put it in perpetual reset mode, so I left my XDA on over night to delete everything and now it seems to be working ok. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong with the upgrade?
This is what I did to upgrade the Radiostack:
1. Copied all the 4 files of Radiostack to device's \windows directory through ActiveSync.
2. Execute RSUpgrade.Exe by double-clicking it.
3. Soft-reset the device once the Radiostack is done.
Your result may vary. Please try it with caution.
thanks pvenkat, I upgraded following your directions and it worked. Unfortunately I think the reception is even worse now than with 6.18!! I'm pretty much just accepting that the XDA on Tmobile (at least in florida) is just garbage reception. But since this is not my first phone and I can pretty much afford to play with it, can anyone else recommend a RSU I could use? I'll try ATT, Rogers, whatever. Just what does everyone find giving them best reception? TIA

Greedy greedy man...

Well lets just say I loved my SX56 when I first saw it, bought it, worked great upgraded it with the AT&T WM2003 ROM, now it is just a pretty PDA that can some times do phone.
The radio stack upgrade just destroyed what little signal I was alredy getting on my SX56. Now I GET NOTHING. IT IS DISCUSSTING.
If any one knows how I can get back a original 2002 ROM and radio stack??????
Anyone knows please email me at [email protected]

Horrible Reception

i've been using my jam for about 4 months now and i had horrible reception with it since i brought it to America, when i used in Saudi Arabia i never had a reception issue. Well for the last week and couple days i've been using this extremely old nokia 3590 and i get full reception with it, specially in my house where i would usually have no reception with the jam. my jam i forgot if my jam is the 850 or 900mhz jam. i know cingular runs on 1900mhz and another i think 850mhz. Well does anyone have issues with reception on a "foriegn" network? and know of a solution?
What Rom Ver are you running there and what is the radio stack ver , sometimes it helps to change the radio stack . . . upgrading it or downgrading it . There's quite a few posts regarding radio updates.
Cheers
horriable reception!!
I used mine in india whilst trekking no probs. I regularly travel all over the world and have had no issues wit phone use. Except takes alittle while to log in to a network.
isnt there a version which is 900 1800 800 /1900 mhz for the US ?
Im sure I read it some where.
maybe your not picking up all the transmitters.
i'm on Rom version 1.12.00 WWE Radio Version 1.13.00 protocol 1337.43 and ExtRom 1.12.167
Mine is the 850/1800/1900 and i think cingular runs on 900 aswell as 1900, also the old at&t network which is now cingular is 850 so why am i not getting good reception? i was reading theres a bigstorage rom where you can select the mhz frequency you want the antenna to run on.. anyone know if that would be a fix?

I don't think it is the hardware. I'm using an XDA Mini, which is the European version. It is loaded with the Imate softare off of this site, and I pick up Cingular towers (though my service is through T-Mobile). You might try updating your ROM.
I am in the LA area.
ROM 1.13.00 WWE
Radio 1.12.10 1337.42
ExtRom 1.12.188 WWE (But I have modified to BigStore)
you can download the radio freq select cab file on its own , do a search on the forum for something to that effect as its somewhere.
then you can manual select them.
thanks for the updated info. Steve, thanks for the info, knowing your using a "foriegn" magician in the us helps me a little. right now i'm downloading the latest WWE rom from the FTP site, i think its 11200_188_11210. if thats not the lastest, please advise me so i can get the latest rom.
also steve your on 1.13.00 because your using the bigstorage correct?

Well, it is a long story. I went to the UK site and downloaded their upgrade program. Then I backed up my ROM, and used the NOID program to update the UK ROM. The actual EXE file at the UK site won't work unless the device is actually from the UK, hence the "NoID" version of the updater has to be used. BTW, ActiveSync needs to be in normal mode (USB "checked") and the Magician has to be in Boot Loader mode when the NoID upgrader program is executed. The documentation was a bit inconclusive on these two points. The above combination worked on my unit.
At that point I had a latest UK version ROM, and it worked fine. But now I had the "upgrade bug", and wanted to customize everything. Taking a deep breath...
I discovered the addresses for the Extended storage and changed them to make that ROM a BigStorage ROM. There was already a UK version Big Storage available on the ftp site, but for some reason it would not complete the boot after flashing the ROM. Anyway, I ended up with the UK ROM modified for Big Storage, and decided to use the latest released IMATE Extended ROM utilities. Then I changed the boot screen and - there it is. OK, OK, so I do things the long way...
I tried the UK Ext ROM stuff also, but they have things that do not apply to the US T-Mobile, such as Blackberry push from their servers. So my unit is a hybrid...
Just call it FrankenMini!
The only co$t is for a 256 mb SD card to contain the ROM image as you transfer it to and from the PC. Actually, 128Mb would do, but the 256 was just about as cheap.

thanks for all this information, and sorry to have you go through all this, but i've just figured out a simple fix.... I'm going to trade in my jam for a k-jam, since its quad band and it runs on WM5.0 i think i'll be happier with it. although its a little thicker i think i'm gonna go ahead with the transition.
Thank you again for all your info, but does anyone know where i can get a picture of the jam next to the k-jam, i remember some site had pics of them together but i can't seem to find it now.

K-Jam is OK as well, but I would never use the keyboard and it is too thick for me. The JAM is just right.

Voicemail indicator doesn't work sometime?? WM6

Hi,
My voicemail indicator icon sometime doesn't show, even several voicemails there, it still doesn't show.
It happen most of the time (with signal/ or w/o). Reboot the handset doesn't seem to help.
Any thought? I'm using T-Mobile network and never had this problem before.
WM6 5.2.318 build 15341.4.0.01
ROM 2.18.0.0 WWE 2/14/06
Radio version 02.61.11
Protocol version 4.1.13.28
ExtROM version 2.25.11.102
What's up tempoct?
I'm having the same issue; however, I have a Cingular 8125 on Cingular's network. I upgraded the phone to WM6. Below are my specs:
- Rom Version: 2.18.0.0 WWE
- Rom Date: 2/14/06
- Radio Version: 02.61.11
- Protocol Version: 4.1.13.28
- ExtROM Version: 2.25.11.102
I am thinking it may be the radio version we're using; however, i posted my own thread before i noticed yours and i am also questioning the same issue.
I've gotten voicemails but not notification what so ever by the phone, which means i have to constantly keep checking my voicemails to see if there's anything...
I'll keep you posted if someone lets me know anything in regards to our issue.
Good luck!
Will V.
I might try to upgrade the radio version.
The thing is, my problem is not consistent though. Says, sometime I tested by calling my phone and left the voice mail. Sometime, the indicator show but most of the time it doesn't.
Its the security policy...
Check the service indication and service loading security policy. Might be worth applying the same policy as the original rom which your device shipped with.
I have a O2 Atom Life upgraded to WM6 and I have the same problem. I don't get the voicemail notification icon to turn on when I get a new email. I do get the missed call icon if my phone is on though. My Tel-Co is T-Mobile in the US.
I can tell that I receive the signal because when I leave myself a message using another phone, as soon as I hang up, my phone wakes up (screen turns on). I know it's not the SIM or T-Mobile because I tried it on my old phone and it works perfectly well.
The last post says to check the security policy. I have no idea what you're talking about. I apologize for being a newbie but can anyone explain in more details what I should do?
Thank!
It's your radio ROM version. Try either 2.19.11 or 2.69.11 and the problems should stop. Personally I use 2.69.11 because it seems to get better reception than 2.19.11.
That sounds really good, but being relatively new to this, I have a few questions:
1. Is this Radio ROM going to work with my Atom Life with WM6? I found such a file on Handango, but it was for a HTC Wizard running WM5.
2. Is it good for T-Mobile US? I read in some other thread that 2.69.11 is only good for Europe.
3. How do you install it?
Thank you again!
