changing the casing - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

i accidentally drop my xda2 earlier today. it was in inside an innopocket aluminum casing but it apparently hit a stone on the sidewalk right at the upper left hand corner, where the bluetooth LED is. it cause a rather ugly scratch on my xda 2 and bent my aluminum casing. fortunately, my xda2 is still working fine.
i was wondering if it's possible to replace the casing of the xda2? where and how much would it cost? as this obviously would not be covered by the warranty.

The cheapest way is to acquire a dummy phone and use the case from that.

Wow rodnav!...
Maybe we live in paralell universes since I dropped mine (which was in it's original leather case) and when dropped it hit a small stone on the pavement and it scrached and dent my MDA2 just on that same spot... it just missed the bluetooth led my a millimeter!
I want to buy a spare casing too!
Let me know if you had any luck finding one...

thanks guys.
i saw a dummy xda2 at a shop recently, i wonder if they'll sell it to me...

DIY scratch protection

I noticed the first scratch on the corner of my Jam today. Since electronics always take the most abuse on the corners, I devised a quick and easy way to protect the corners of my Jam while I'm in Europe for the next 3 weeks. Take electrical tape or clear satin tape and place a piece over the corners. Works best if you cut a slit in the tape so you can fold it around the corner without wrinkles. In all probability the device will land on its corners if dropped or take the most abuse on the corners if scraped against something. Thus, problem solved; I did it to my digital camera too. It doesn't look half bad on either device, and if you can't stand the black corners, just use clear tape. Any tape works as long as the adhesive won't stick to the advice after you remove the tape.
damn that's dead sexy
Damn! Why didn't I think of that????
Why don't you run the tape all the way round? I think it will look somewhat better!...
I'm sorry, but that has to be the stupidest looking thing I've seen in a long time. Why don't you just get a silicon case for about $10 off of EBAY? I mean, if you REALLY need electrical tape and that's all you can find...great. But just get a cheap latex or silicon case such as the ones from JavoEdge.com.
Do you put electrical tape on the front and rear bumper of your car too?
GHETTOOOOOOO
Just curious, what specifically do you expect to happen in Europe over the next three weeks that would necessitate such a precaution when you don't prepare against similar risks at home  ?
hehehehe... Good point JPreston!!!
I don't get it! People seem to get very upset when they discover they scratched the ball mirror on the back of their JAM. Now we have a JAM covered in electrical tape. Should we all carry our devices in the original box? Or better yet never use them to keep them in pristine condition? I am not saying I didn't get a little ticked off when I found a nice big scratch in the corner after a small drop but come on! I think we're all getting a bit too precious. Anyway, to each their own.
Of far more concern is the gunk that gets on the screen from my face every time I hold the JAM to my head! I mean yuck! What the heck is up with that? Is there that much oil on my face??? I just washed it! I gave my phone to my friend the other day to make a call and his face left some sort of super oil on the screen that wouldn't scrub off for several minutes! Its gross and embarassing! I think we need some sort of face oil protector!
Does anybody have any idea for cheap screen protection? I think the prices are outrageous for the slices of film sold as protectors.
I use the cheapest of them all...
They are made for Palm devices and are sold on flea markets or "One Dollar" stores...
They cost $1 dollar the 12 Pack!
Just cut them to size and go!
scratch? i've droped my mini 2 times and got 3 dent edges. damn sad. The stupid casing they gave me is getting pretty loose. I put it on my belt.... so everytime i knock it seems that pouch just flings out. The screw and the plastic seems to have worn off.
I think i'm gonna go to a skinning shop to hide the dent edges.
try to buy a leather case for Nokia 7610. it fits.
You dont use that in the box lether case. It will easily fall of that tiny hook.
Wit the lether case of Nokia, it is mounted sideway into the belt by a leather that is sewed.
mine has never fallen. Even if it falls off the belt when you undress, the leather case is so stiff that it will not dent the mini.
@Emil...
Can you post a picture of your JAM in the Nokia case for us to see?

Dropped mine on a concrete floor from about 1.5 meters and got a really ugly dent on one of the corners of the battery cover. The cover wouldn't even go back on!
Easy fixed though. Just took a plastic pen and pushed the dent out from the inside. It still shows a slight dent and small scratches if you look closely, but what the heck...
Anyone know of any metallic paint (model, SKU, UPC code) that I could use on my JAM? I rarely put on my seatbelt, and the one time that I decide to play safe, I scratch up the corner of my JAM. I'd never go "ghetto" as one person put it in the thread, but I'm sure there's something out there to match it up. Any ideas?
Get the jam off of your belt and put it in a proper car holder and you will not only protect it from getting scratches from your seatbelt, you will also get it charged while driving. And also one less reason not to wear a seatbelt that could save your life in the case of an accident.
Incidentally, can anyone recommend a decent car kit for the JAM? I want one I can mount with some amount of ease somewhere on the console... I don't like those ones that stick on the windscreen.

www.brodit.com
Just don't order it from Expansys as all their product descriptions for Brodit are messed up. Does anyone know where else to buy Brodit because I still need the mounting clip for my car (Expansys kept sending the wrong one). Can you buy from them (Brodit) directly?
Thanks.

xda exec case marks

Hi everyone,
I havent seen a post about this so i assume its only me that has this!
Since i have been carrying my exec in my pocket in 'clamshell mode' i have noticed that some of the keys on the keyboard have rubbed against the plastic next to the screen causing dot marks. i assumed the rubber pads at the edge of the screen were supposed to prevent this.
Anyone else noticed this? Anyone know how i can get rid of the marks!?
Paul.
I have the saem problem with my QTEK 9000
I have called tech support and they state that it isn't covered by the guarantee. Thats BULLS**T. I don't know who to talk to now to have this problem solved.
I got a Krusell Case and now the transparent part of the case has scratches. The case is 5 days old!!! This is definitely a factory defect in my book.
Who do we complait to about this?
Guys, don't you agree this is a factory defect? Anybody know any of the dealers personally and could inquire about this problem?
I've mentioned this under another post (search for "keyboard bump stops"). Basically, the little curves rubber stops in the bottom corners aren't tall enough to prevent the keyboard rubbing the top of the clamshell.
This is how I've fixed it...
1. Prize out the rubber stops (this is very easy with a jewellers screw driver, or similar)
2. Put a very small amount of Blu-Tac into the recesses, and pack it down with the screwdriver. This is to act as a base for step 3.
3. Using the screwdriver, carefully dab superglue on the blu-tac, and around the lip of the recess.
4. Push the bump stop back into place.
Mine now sit about 2-3mm proud of the surface, and I can see daylight through the closed clamshell, so the keys don't touch the top piece.
Cheers,
Steve.
Does this mean that it isn't a factory defect? And really isn't covered by warranty?
I think it's just a design flaw, really. In theory, I suppose you could insist they do something about it, but I don't know whether you would get anywhere.
Cheers,
Steve.
I recently applied a screen protector on my Qtek 9000 and used a cloth to clean glasses with to clear the screen of any dust. Since then I've put the cloth in between when I closed my Qtek. Both the screen protector & cloth will hopefully prevent any damage to the screen and surrounding area due to the keys touching and rubbing them. :!:
its a shame that, after we have looked after our devices so carefully, they are damaged due to a design fault!
Is there any way of polishing these marks out? i suppose it would be very difficult with the case being a matt finish.
Yeah, this is very disappointing. Does this happen to those who have MDA Pro, Imate, O2 also?
Is there some bureau where we can complain?
My Exec with about 3 weeks of use also shows marks on "-" and "+" keys, and also on "2" and ":", more concerning is when the device is used with screen out as I tend to keep mine now, the rubber stops actually touch nothing at all because of the curved outer case. No marks have appeared on the "o2" alluminium outer yet though, only on the plastic surrounding the screen on the inner.
Regards
Yeah same here... six little dots on the left of the screen and attendant shiny keys... bah!
I have ordered a Krussell case and was hoping this would fix the problem, but it sounds like it might not (although I'd rather the case got damaged than the device).
What about those of you with Piel Frama cases? The fact that they are a bit chunky and prevent the device from closing fully sounds like a godsend now, doesn't it?
I have an MDA Pro and I don't have this problem at all, there is a good gap between the screen and the keys.
I'm not sure if its the same for all MDA Pros, or if I've just been lucky.
Good for you that you don't have those marks. I only have them on the screen side so i guess it happens when the device is closed.
I have the krusell case. No luck, the plastic has scratches too. Only after 4 days, mind you.
Has anyone had POSITIVE results after complaining?
dot dot dot
This issue is a design flaw and therefore should be repaired/replaced under warranty. I have had five xda exec's due to this problem or that, and on number five I was adimint I would not get any shiney spots on it so I removed the little rubber stops and now I have my own home made stick on rubber stops which when I look through when closed I can see daylight...and no shiney spots so far....but I would say we should get together and do a major complant about this issue..I can not belive how HTC built the best phone I have ever owned the XDA2 and the very same company have built the worst one I have ever owned too.... the XDA exec
I've got shiney keys on the right and left of my keyboard on my mda pro but no marks on the screen,
I've been using a screen protector since I received it, all bar two days of trying to work out why the screen stops responding.
The shiny marks should be next to the screen and not on it. It's VERY annoying!
I have shiny spots both sides of screen, krussel case with shiny spots on clear plastic, AND - The screen swivels a bit on the hinge as you open and close, leaving a horizontal line above the top four center buttons on the keyboard, where the bottom of the screen above the hinge touches. Anyone else got this line?
so far no problem with this hinge causing a line.
I have the faded plastic of the krusell case though
Silicon Case
I protected my Dopod900 with a silicon case since I don't want to put scratches on it, I think it works fine. Take a look at it.
ive had my exec since november. If i call o2 and make a fuss about the damage i have from the keys will they replace it under warranty? How many people have managed to replace there exec's due to this problem?
But what even if they replace it??? This is a design fault and in all likelihood the next unit you will get will start having these marks in a few days of use.
But yes we should all make a fuss so that O2 finally pushes HTC to correct the design fault.
Regards

Strip of Rubber on T Mobile Battery Cover

The small sliver of rubber that is stuck horizontally towards the bottom of the back of my Vario has fallen off.
I bought the device in the UK but am now out of there and the devices sold locally to me don't have this piece. Does anyone have details of a 'spares' company that could sell me this ridiculous 'part'? The stamp for the envelope will definitely be worth more than the piece of rubber but it's so handy and I want it back!
well, i would try calling the factory in taiwan, hah! (or making your own piece of rubber)
Yeah...mine fell of too...but I don't miss it at all, maybe that I will make my own peace of rubber sometime, but for now it does not bother me a single bit
if you live in atlanta i can give you mines i doubt anyone sells that piece, just buy the battery cover.
mine fell off too but I didn't really care. just get a black marker and color that part of the battery cover where the rubber used to be. it will look brand new again! lol
Egrips. check em out
Replacement battery covers cost $7 from HTC. Google them or search this site for contact numbers.
I'm just gonna search for a little piece of rubber and cut it to the correct size.
Then I'm gonna glue it to the battery cover of my Wizard. Only then I am sure it will never fall of again
Molski
I have a broken battery cover with the rubber part still on it. PM me your address and I'll post it to you.
First come first served.
Steve.

Update: Little cracks in HD2 housing, 100% sure they are cracks

My two weeks old HD2 that I keep in one of these soft rubber cases has little cracks in the topcorners of the housing. At first sight it looks like its stripes from the factory mould but under a magnifying glass they appear to be cracks. The cracks go from the edge all the way down to the bottom of the device.
I am pretty sure it never dropped and I am carrying it in my jacket.
Does anyone else have these little cracks?? I am going to return it for warranty but would like to know if I am the only one.
These cracks remind me a lot of se Experia
Thanks for reactions.
It is not possible to post pictures as the cracks are to tiny to show on a photograph.
UPDATE:
I am 100% sure that they are cracks now. I checked with a colleagues new HD2 and she doesn't have any cracks or lines whatsoever. I am going to return it to store later on. Before I take it back, I will try to shoot some daylight pictures with a Macro lens.
Pictures would help
If you can't even se them without a magnifying glass, why bother?
When I look at my device, I have these "cracks" in three cornes. Bottom right, bottom left and top left. However I really do not think theyre cracks, since theyre perfect straight and all in the same position of the corners.

Thats what I thought first, but the two at the bottom aren't completely through yet. One has just started and is about one millimeter and the other is halfway down.
I believe the integrity/strength off the case is completely gone with these cracks. Anyway: The device is two weeks old....

get it swapped out for a new one if its so new.
I can see these "cracks" on mine, in all 4 corners, all at the same place, and all in exactly straight lines. I suspect it's just the way the casing is put together, and I'm certainly not concerned.
same here, only one goes to the front edge and looks like a crack, the other 3 look like mould marks.
yes i found it too on top near speaker and on right side, i noticed it the 1st day but its too minor unless if u see it very closely
it is not cracks
its just the way the case is sealed - the're not cracks
Every HD2 has these "cracks" which are not cracks at all. When manufacturing the housing the sides are bent up and meet at the corners and are then sealed. Due to tolerances in one HD2 You can see more in one some less. I have them clean and straight in all four corners visible w/o magnifying glass.
Just take a close look and think how the housing is produced. Somewhere on the net You can find pics of a completely disassembled HD 2. Unfortunately I dunno the link anymore .........

I am sorry but there is no bending of producing these cases. they are produced in a vacuum mould as far as I know.
The thing is that they are not all the same and in one corner not all the way through. I am gonna try to shoot some pics later on tonight.

mine is the same, 2 "cracks" or lines at the bottom, they are so barely visible, i think it happened after i dropped it gently on my desk, but all is well i wouldnt worry about it

Wait her to heavy use it for some time and You will see cracks, which are not cracks
Why ?
Case = metal (no vacuum-mold possible): in production the case is bent from a flat raw metal plate to the configuration of the housing very precisely.
Then the surface is treated, sealed and covered with (powder?) varnish.
So far: no cracks (which are not cracks at all !)
Now You unpack it: still no cracks to be seen (Which still are not cracks at all).
When playing around and/or heavy use the HD 2 (which it is meant for) it gets hot = metal expands (naturally), the varnish NOT ! NOW You start to see the meeting points of the casings sides as "cracks" in the VARNISH.
BUT STILL THERE ARE NO CRACKS IN THE HOUSING.
You better buy a crappy phone of plastic, there You will have cracks only after light dropping on the table

Never heard such nonsens.
Only part metal in the housing is the batterycover.
ive got them too on all 4 corners.as well as on the bottom from where the battery cover to the headphone jack. its a bit hard to explain. but i thought it was from manufacturing.
ive got pics of them but cant show them cos im not allowed to link to them. stupid unnecessary restrictive rules...
I have them too, surprise surprise. How many people have to point out that they are not cracks and are from the way the phones are produced. Everyone I know has them in the corners as well. Take it back if you want to but they probably tell you same thing. I've never seen such "perfect" cracks in all my life, it's just amazing.

HTC One speaker housing

Hi,
In the drop test it showed when the HTC was dropped the speaker housing fell off. As I believe this part of the housing it glued on, how would be stick this back on if that happened to us?

Could probably glue it back on? Get some super glue and bam right back on. Just an idea.
Simply put the cover back on after heating the little glue htc has already there.
I love the fact they are removable because the back cover is very scratch resistant but the speaker ones damn they nick easily according to reviews. If they can be replaced just by gluing a new pair or spare parts that would be nice because thats only worth a couple dozen of dollars.
