where can i find a rom backup utility would appreciate any help

2 options:
use the bootloader menu to copy SE -> SD
or use XDAtools to copy ROM -> PC .nbf file

Does the XDATools work with the XDA II or only the XDA? I am new to the game of PDA's (still waiting for mine to arive, back ordered) but am wanting to get backups of my device incase I stuff any thing up and I just upload the image file back onto the unit and be back were I was?
Is this the type of thing the XDATools does?
when you back your XDA II up does it make a compleate Image? (as in the same as doing a image of a Hard Drive in a computer?)
Many thanks in advance...

maybe someone with XDA II can tell more ... I 'm still stuck with my lovely XDA I ... but in general, the SD back is the best and most secured backup method.

thanks for the reply
I'll give it a go, Might purchase a separate SD card for backup image!

Xdarit doesn't write with new .nbf files ?

I use the Xdarit to read & write the Rom image from my MDA.
I managed to read from the SD card and stored on my harddisk.
When I create back with a new rom .nbf files to the SD card and read back again to the harddisk, the SD show the original files size that from my MDA not the one that I'm going to upgrade to ? I rename the files to .nb1 extension.
Do I need to reformat the SD Card ? Do I need a new SD Card for the download ?
Dear XDA developer #..., please advice. I have been posting and yet to get some good advice and replies.
I would appreciate very much of your expertise in this matter.
Thanks again
they should be the same size, nb1, and nb0 files always are fixed size
more answer:
- when using xdarit you never have to format sd cards.
- renaming files will probably confuse XDARit, since this
is how xdarit recognizes what kind of file it has.
What I meant original file sizes.
1. Read from SD Card ( backup from MDA )
bootloader 5-15.nb0 256 K
WindowsCE 5-15.nb1 32,512 K
2. Write to SD Card ( with new ruu extract from O2 ie )
bootloader 5-15.nb0 256 K
WindowsCE NK_Wallaby31413wee_O2_Fulll.nbf 31,745 K
3. Read back the backup step 2.
bootloader 5-15v1.nb0 256 K
WindowsCE 5-15v1.nb1 32,512 K
As you mentioned, the files size are fixed, therefore my files of
the 5-15v1.nb1 should have the content of the NK-Wallaby.....
and I should had leave the file extention as .nbf without rename it to .nb1
Or should i had wite back using the step 1 files name ?
Please advice, many thanks
if you rename an .nbf file to .nb1, you will burn an incorrect os image
to your xda. making it unbootable in OS mode.
( your bootloader will still work )
also, be careful updating your bootloader, if it fails somehow
it is very difficult to restore your xda
if you just want to update your OS, only write the ..nb1 file
or select the .nbf from your distribution, without renaming it.
this http://openwince.sourceforge.net/jtag/iPAQ-3600/ might
give you an impression on what you would have to do, to repair
your xda after you've trashed your bootloader
Bootloader still appear but buttons not working ?
Thanks XDA developers,
My case is that I might accidently overwrite the bootloader.
The bootloader still be able to appear and the GSM OK showed but none of the functions button be able to work.
Do you think there is a way to work around ?
Many thanks for your replies
can u tell about bootloader version?
Bootloader v 5.15 on a T-Mobile MDA with 3.13.12 GER & Radio T310.
i think u can try to make sd card that contain wallaby path (.nb2) using xdarit... logically u can access "action button" to flash the rom.... this is only way to activate "action button"
after insert sd card u can go on bootloader and see wallaby path, press action button, if it work u can flash the rom (may be u should find exact rom that installed before xda died, more work?)
hope u can fix this prob
regards

Just searching for why I couldn't get XDArit to work with my system - seems the larger (presumably debug) build of XDArit has what's needed to work with the v4 nbf's - thanks for the pointer!

Damage XDA

after upgraded my xda crash n cannot boot up normally, coz interupted usb disconnect during upgrade, better i can enter the bootloader 5.17, the problem is..
"dont have the card reader", only have 2 sets complete of xda (1 damage n 1 still good) and 1 sd card, could u help me to make my xda back to normal??
is .nbf and .nb0/.nb1 have the same raw format??
if someone send me the ce backup (from bootloader) then i write it to sd card via working xda n then move the sd card to the damage one to replace the image, is it work???
if that metode work, could someone email me so i can give some space to upload the files .nb0 + .nb1
We do not currently have an XDA-program to write SD-cards in the RAW format you need for the bootloader, only a program for the desktop PC (XDArit).
You can make a backup of your OS on the working XDA if you have the bootloader though (provided it's not a 5.17 bootloader), and flash it on the other machine, no desktop PC needed. No time for a detailed tutorial now, but take a look at the bootloader page on this site for details.
can do nothing , must waiting someone solve my prob till i can order for the new card reader from here.
thx
last night i receive my sd card n flashing trough bootloader 5.17, n my xda back to normal, i think the xdarit manual must change in some section(picture that use nb1 file?) coz can make other people confuse to using it (ex:rename nbf to nb1 can make xda not working after flashing!!!)
special thx to xda dev for this excellent site

Help please.. SD Card flashing

My PC's activesync crashed and hanged while flashing the ROM. Now the xda is stuck with Updating screen.
Can someone please tell me which file to download from Jeff's kitchen (nk.nb1 or nk.nbf or anything else) and how to write it to SD card for flashing.
I tried to write nb1 and nbf both, using xda-tools, but it is not copied in the format required by the bootloader. In fact, in either case it is copied as a file which is not identified by the bootloader (my version is 5.15). boootloader starts with GSM OK message, and does not give me option to flash the ROM.
Can someone please please tell me how to do it?
you need SD card writer or a SD backup from another XDA.

Thanks.
I was about to go to the service centre for rom image from another xda, but I decided to give it a try using usb cradle, and ran the original upgrade program. It came out with error and asked me to soft reset the device and try again, which I did, and it worked. I now have a working xda!

OK but how can i reflash my SX56 with SD cadr if I don't have any back up ?
plus everybody has bootloader 5.17 or older but my is 5.22 :-(
Hello,
you have 2 options both use SD card:
1. get ROM backup from any other working XDA.
2. get SD card reader/writer. change the extention of the ROM file you cooked to .zip and use winzip to extract a file named NK.nbf under \english directory. use the SD writer to copy this file to the SD card.
in both cases, insert the SD card into your XDA and use the bootloader.
good luck ...
similar problem last year
Hiya Mike2001,
I had a similar problem last year. I found that while the ActiveSync monitor shows no connectivity you will still be able to transfer an OS image. One hiccup I did find, and I am running wallaby 5.17 by the way, is a version conflict with the proposed rom and existing header information. This is a windows registry problem on your PC caused by the crash which needs to be deleted prior to attempting the upgrade.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,

Backing Up ROM

Ok...I think I've managed to muddle through unlocking my XDA 1 but have a final few q's as follows:
It seems I need to use the XDA Developers Special edition ROM in order to unlock this XDA...don't know why cos the ROM asinstalled is 3.17.03 and I have anice little Icon on the XDA of a wireless modem but hey, if life was easy it would be very boring...
So I understand I need to back up my existing ROM or I'll loose Tom Tom etc....Now I've done a full backup using Active Sync but is this enough....I keep reading about using the SD backup function on the XDA but surely this just backs up to the SD card? Should I back to this then remove the card or what? I assume I can back up to the SD card and then copy the data across to my PC using the explore function of Active Sync...Is this the right approach to take? Is it just the back up file I need to copy because I have a directory on the storage card that's called "Great Britain", I assume it's something to do with Tom Tom which sounds like it might be kind of important.
Finally, if I decide I quite like the Special edition ROM and want to keep it does this mean I can't have Tom Tom back without re-installing it cos I don't think I have the original disk.
To summarise:
I need to back up...Is the Active Sync back up good enough or should I use the storage card back up feature on the XDA and copy it the PC....
Regards my good people, I know I'm a nuisance cos my Mum tells me so all the time
You could try downloading xdaunlock then copying it to your xda and then executing it from there. This might save you the rom burning session if it works. if you want ot backup your existing rom i would suggest the sd card method, its much more reliable in my opinion. to test if it has backed up ok just put the sd card with the backup in your xda, if it asks to format it then you can be fairly sure you have a good backup, answer no to format and remove sd card and keep it safe.
