Video Calling / Rattles amongst other things

Hi there,
I recently obtained my XDA Exec (complete with loud rattle) from o2 as a sweetener prior to putting in a large corporate order but have been getting annoyed with the following problems:
1) UTMS Reception is poor and chops and changes between UTMS and GPRS regularly
2) On Video Calling a friend they recieve a loud high pitched whine from my handset. Whereas whenever they phone me everything goes swimmingly.
3) Pronounced rattle within the main body of the handset (at the camera end)
4) WMV audio / video playback is jerky
5) Not being able to properly terminate closed programs
6) Delay in opening programs / files
7) Cannot get a wifi connection with my Linksys router, works with other routers / access points.
8) Does not work with GoToMyPC PocketView (Citrix)
9) No way of viewing flash (swf) content.
All this and I'm running it in corporate mode.

Not chuffed in the slightest so any suggestions greatly recieved.

I think O2's 3G network has piss-poor coverage at the moment. This may not be the Exec's fault.

Sounds like a problem with your handset. Mine is wonderfully solid and rattle-free. Feels much better than my XDA2 was.

WMP seems to be poor on WM5 so you may find the freeware media player TCPMP much more capable.

This is a feature of Windows Mobile that seems to really annoy some people. WM is designed to minimise programs rather than close them, and it handles the memory management itself depending on system resources. If you can overcome the need to 'close' (terminate) programs yourself and just let the OS handle it then you may find that the machine works perfectly and is more responsive as a result. I don't think it's an accident that MS designed it this way. My machine runs just fine if I use it as MS intended, but I agree that it's preferable sometimes to know that you've freed up all the memory from a bloaty app after you've finished with it.

There's a lot of programs around at the moment that claim to be WM5-compatible, when in fact they are only tested to work on WM5; they haven't been designed for WM5. This, IMHO, is the factor that will have the biggest effect on the reliability and speed of your Exec. Try it without any 3rd-party software for a while and see how fast it is before you blame the Exec. For example, the latest version of PocketBreeze and PocketPlus claim to be WM5-compatible, but if I have them showing on my Today screen then I can be waiting up to 10 seconds for the password-entry screen to disappear and the Today screen to finish rendering after power-on of the Exec. If I remove these two plugins then my Exec is instantly usable when I turn it on.
I think the Universal gets a lot of criticism of its performance when in fact this is poorly-written 3rd-party software causing the problem (such as O2's InActive interface). If you can wait for fully-compatible (i.e. designed from the ground-up) software to be made available then you may find the machine works exactly as you'd expect.

Sounds like you were sent a refurbished handset.
They do it all the time as a matter of course - cuts costs.
And, no, they dont inform you of the fact prior and won't accept the fact post returning it and asking for another.
Depending on how numpty you get about it they will then either tell you they don't have anymore in stock ie. they have no NEW ones only REFURBISHED ones and will not give you an ETA on the replacement or assure you that they are shocked and concerned this is happening and send you another refurb. Just one thats less obviously knackered.
Oh, then they'll bill you for the one they sent originally and/or imply you have dropped or/broke it/damaged it and should pay for the replacement.
All of this will take several hours to conclude since you will be transferred, cut off, abused, hung up on and plain lied to by several different numpties at their call center. Then eventually, after faxing them half a dozen times and not being called back you will go to a competitor and if you're lucky, recieve marginally better service. Although this is currently somewhat unlikely.

A mixed response but cheers for the feedback! I would love to use it sans third party software but due to the requirements my career puts on my mobile devices / laptop I can't live without them. especially vxUtil and TomTom to get to the clients premises. I wonder what timescale Microsoft are toying with for pushing the SDK to software houses and hence getting a decent range of software out on the market.

I have to agree 100% with everything SiliconS said.
My 3G coverage is actually better than my 'normal' coverage on my T-Mobile simmed JasJar (which I assume is down to the number of users?)
Build quality is very good.
Can't say I use WMP, my entire audio/video library is on ogg and XVid, so TCPMP what I use, and it's perfect.
Using 'smart minimise' generally speeds things up, so there's no need to close everything all the time. It's how WM was designed, and I have no reason to assume I know any better than the designers.
The point about third-party software is the absolute number one cause of most people's problems around here. Developers SAY their software works on WM5, and that may indeed be true. But as far as I know, every single piece of software available on WM5 has actually been written for WM2003SE, and then modified to make it FUNCTION on WM5. None of it is really optimised for WM5 yet, and certainly none of it has been written specifically for WM5. Give it a bit of time, but for now, we're all running software which isn't really using the new OS properly...
The depressing thing is that the SDK for WM5 has been available for about 6 months, and it's only now that the first couple of devices are out, that the developers are bothering to update their software. It's like the X-Box 360 being released, but no-one's bothered to write software for it yet, so you have to use the old X-Box games on it while everyone catches up.....

TomTom 5.1 is one of the apps I use and - although it works - it doesn't display crisply and effortlessly in the way I'd expect: you can actually see it processing the rendering of icons, screen overlays, new screens etc. etc. and sure enough, TomTom BV don't claim that it's compatible. It works but not by design. I'd like to think that this is evidence that TomTom is taking seriously its obligation to rewrite the codebase to make it fully compatible, and that those of us who've got 5.1 working have just been lucky. Other developers and software houses may be so keen to get their program out there for us to use that they're cutting corners and making do.
The makers of Pocket Informant claim that their newest version is compatible with WM5, when in fact it has several serious shortcomings that make me think it's probably anything but. (For example, how the hell do I dial a number from the contacts list without getting the stylus out?) In stark contrast, DeveloperOne - makers of my PIM of choice: Agenda Fusion - have yet to release a WM5-compatible version and I hope this means they're taking its porting seriously and that when they do eventually release it, we'll be able to rely on it to perform perfectly and not affect the Exec's performance at all. Unfortunately they must be losing customers in the meantime who are so desperate to replace the default Microsoft PIM that they'll try alternatives like Pocket Informant, despite PI's obvious weaknesses in comparison IMO.
I won't be buying PocketBreeze or PocketPlus until they work without slowing down my Exec. I'll never be buying PocketInformant. I'll wait patiently to buy AgendaFusion, even more sure that I made the right decision to choose the version I used on my XDA2.

If you suspect that your apps aren't fully WM5 compatible then you could try using WM5's task manager to close them after you've used them so there's no risk of them slowing down your machine. Otherwise I'd really recommend letting WM5 handle its memory. If you're using any non-compatible Today plugins then I'd definitely recommend you find a way to live without them for a while since they'll kill your Exec's performance and ruin your enjoyment of the machine.
And I'd agree with gubbs' comments too: it's unforgivable of O2 to send out refurbished machines to new customers while charging full whack for them. At the worst they could send out refurb units as insurance/warranty replacements but absolutely not for new customers. Their customer service is pants and the 3G coverage is weak. The Exec, however, is a very, very good machine and future ROM upgrades and better third-party software will bring the software up to spec too.
At least, I hope so....

I must admit I've previously been one of those people who insists on nothing I'm not currently using should still be running. I've always hated the idea of smart minimise, especially when looking at all the amount of memory shutting them down seems to free up. Though, SiliconS has made me think about that, and I'm going to give the smart minimise thing a try, see how it pans out. Of course there are some apps that don't actually HAVE an "Exit" or "Quit" option, and that's where the only genuinely useful bit of O2 kit - the Task Manager - comes in useful.
I'm otherwise very impressed with the Exec. Basic mode has all the things that I need in it, though I still mourn the loss of the memory slider function in WM2003 giving me nearly 70MB resources like the 2i gave me.
Ditto re 3rd party software. I don't use Pocket Plus now (despite buying it for the xda / xda2 / xda2i), and only have PocketZenPhone (essential), Total Remote, TCPMP and TomTom 5.1 installed. I find, for my needs, that the stock PIM and default programs are better in 05 than 03SE and will need to be persuaded otherwise before investing in more apps.

This is a function of the hardware, I think. There's no longer a single RAM whose allocation you can affect with the slider. On the plus side we now have persistent memory! Again, though, while it's reassuring to maximise the available system resources that the Exec reports and to see a nice big number like that, I've seen mine down as low as just 1MB program memory available and it's all still functioned perfectly. If WM5 needs more memory then it closes something in the background to get some.

We have almost the same list of apps! Mad.
Yesterday I uninstalled PocketInformant in frustration at its clunky interface and so I'm back to using the default PIM. I'm reminded how basic and featureless it really is. I've just entered all the flights for a round-the-world holiday in February and on the week view all I see are a bunch of coloured blocks when there's so much potential to write some text in the blocks to show at a glance what they represent. Can't wait for AgendaFusion. I'd forgotten how much I depended on it.

General Exec questions

Hi all,
I currently own a SPV C500 which is coming to the end of it's life due to the fact the my contract ends v.soon.
Basically how does the Exec fair compared to the SPV, i know it's ALOT more powerful but is it as stable.
After reading alot of threads on here i noticed there seems to be quite a negative vibe around this phone, due to it's unstablity. Is it really that bad? and when i get it (some time next week) will i have to upgrade anything or will it be fine out the box?
edit> oh and can the O2 users get a pdf file reader on it, as i have read somewhere it doesn't have it while the M5000 does :?

What can I say,
1-Size is big and bulky in contast.
2-Screen is gorgeous
3-Takes a while for screen to flip or rotate.
4-I have had no real dramas with mine
5- If youw nat the pfr reader I can send you that.
6-o2 users get a task manager
7-battery life is nota sgood as your smartphone
8-Takes better pictures
9-Faster
10-Great keyboard

What are your uses?
I use mine as a basic phone, pim and email device and mp3 pakyer does job great out of the box. I did buy a belt case though.

how much will i use it? roughly 4 hours a day, inc phone calls, music etc.
What uses? Phone (obvioulsy) MP3 player (inc videos) check mail sometimes, recording my lectures for that week (using calendar) plus meetings, use tasks for various stuff. Use word and Excel. Camera when I'm out, games! (I'm still 20 lol)
I'm sure other things which i will find out when i get it.

Must say that I love mine, just be careful what you install (some apps not good for WM5.0 and slow it down). I have had no dramas with mine either although some people have so its not been a universally (scuse pun) good experience for all.
You should also get a BT headset for phone use and install MS voice command + the registry hacks that make it useable from the headset with MSVC.
Beyond that, very nice, very tasteful, love all that............

There's a bit of a negative vibe from certain disgruntled users who've been having problems (caused by 3rd-party software?) but there's a thread in this forum in which people are giving their Universal marks out of ten. The vast majority give it 8/10 or better.
It's a great machine but you have to treat it with care when choosing 3rd-party software to install. Not all developers have released truly compatible versions yet, despite what some of them are claiming...

Sorry friend, not really true. There are people who have found call problems, BT reception problems, missed calls and some M$ does not always work on the Universal. My experience is that the more features you use the more difficulties you find. I don't regard the problems I have had with the "suspend" feature a problem with third-party s/w.

Still seems to me that many people have problems because of the software they've installed on their machines. The out-of-the-box Exec is a great, stable machine once the O2 Active stuff is removed. Incompatible 3rd-party software slows the whole machine down, leading to missed calls, slow answering, slow orientation changes, unreliable alarms etc etc. I had these same problems too, at the beginning after I'd installed the trial versions of all the 3rd-party software I wanted. So I removed all the third-party software again (PocketBreeze, PocketPlus, PocketWeather, PocketInformant etc.) and now my Exec is fantastic. I can't remember the last time I did a soft reset and I NEVER force-close any applications. It just works.
I obviously don't know your situation, jah, or which software you're running on your various Universals, but the fact that most people rate their Universal 8/10 or better says more to me than the loudly-shouted problems of unlucky people who have machines like yours.

I would personally say go for it. I initially thought mine was huge, but once you start to use it you soon forget the size. I have had no issues except for my sheer stupidity. I was born with that so used to that now
No honestly from what ytou say, you can quite well get away using the exec as it is out of the box. My brother uses the 02 stuff with his and has not noted ant slow down, mine is now a generic version. I love the screen so hard to go back and use my wizard after using my exec.

if I use "suspend" I miss calls and I have not changed my third-party app installation. And you need third-party apps especially as the PIM in WM5 is very poor. MS Reader - a M$ WM5 app does not work properly with the SD card stored eBooks if you use "suspend". I am not shouting about problems I am being realistic ( I have used Palm OS and Symbian and I also report my issues with those devices). People report problems and in many cases they have removed third-party apps to eliminate the source of problems. Many users have their Execs freeze when SMS arrives (and these users have no third-party apps running) and I my Exec freeze when downloading emails over GPRS/UMTS (as my JJ did). What I have noticed, even though it seems odd, is that my Exec is less stable after I installed the latest ROM from the O2 site. The ROM that came with my Exec seemed more stable.

Well i finally bought it yesterday! chuffed to bits....(so far)
few niggles though:
1) How do you set profiles? and does it have an "automatic"profile, which changes from "normal" to "discreet" when a meeting is taking place on your calendar?
2) On the "home" screen can you change the font colour from white to black or any other colour?
3) How do you change your bluetooth name?
4) How do check the "call history" when the O2 install type is on "basic"
5) To which folder do you place mp3s or WAVs so that they can be played back as notifications?
6) How do you change skins on WMP? I've downloaded the skins, but which folder do you put it in to enable it?

I'm puzzled by this statement - the ROM on the O2 site is the original ROM that all units are shipped with. There is no update yet, although they're working on one.

What I know:
1. There is a program PocketZenPhone with this functionality - search the forums. There are also some other sollutions but I don't remember the names
2. You can change the "Theme" of today screen and whole machine, including font colour. Search for Today Themes on the forum
3. This is connected to DeviceID name that you can set in About applet in Settings/System.
4. Can't help you here - don't have O2 branded machine, but in general you have a Call History Button on main Phone Application screen
5. I haven't tried on WM5 machine, but on WM2003 machines you coud not use MP3 by default (there is a hack though). Anyhow you put the files in the Windows\Rings folder.
6. Sorry never did this - but if you do a google search I'm sure there are some instructions out there

Webcam and touchscreen+Onenote performance

I'm a guy who is unfortunate enough to be carrying around a notebook computer most of the time for work and is starting to get a bad neck so am starting to look for a serious alternative. I've been following the HTC SHIFT discussion and reviews avidly but unfortunately till now I have been unable to get the answers which I seek. I hope one of you can help me with this problem.
I generally use my notebook for 5 tasks and I need to ascertain whether the HTC SHIFT is up to these tasks before committing to one (otherwise I'm going to use the same money and get a Dell XPS)
1. Web video call with MSN Live Messenger - does the SHIFT offer adequate performance with its webcam/processor power/memory capacity to perform this properly?
2. Note taking - I've never used a tablet PC before, so does the Touchscreen/OneNote combination actually usable? For example, the Notes program on WM5/6 is NOT useable in work situations: The width of the pen "nib" draws a line that is too thick on the screen, the ink appears late on the "paper", causing a disconcerting delay effect, and the screen on PDAs is too small for this purpose.
3. Since this is an INTERNET device, I would be installing the relevant security programs on it, e.g. resident antivirus, antispyware and firewall programs. With an 800MHz processor and only 1GB of RAM running VISTA, would I still have a usable computer? I'm only talking about EXCEL/WORD/POWERPOINT/ONENOTE/WMP/YOUTUBE type usage.
4. Powerpointing - I believe the SHIFT would be perfect for this, with its VGA output and small size.
5. Internet browsing - as I understand there has been no problems with speed whilst browsing
It would be incredibly appreciated if those of you who own this device or have a test device or have tested the device to give me any information!

I've not used MSN Messenger but have used it with LCS and performance seems fine.
Note taking with OneNote seems to also be ok but you won't want to have too many applications running in the background. I'm keeping mine to the bare min really and concentrating on Office 2007 products (with the exception of Visio. I comes with an AV product but I've replaced it with McAfee and that seems to be ok. Using it with Outlook 2007, Word Excel PPt etc its really only large or multiple files that seem to cause serious lag.

HD Screen Resolution - Scaling questions?!

Hi Folks,
I know there are several threads here around apps that either don't scale or just die the death on the HD, and I'm watching the list closely...
But I just wanted to know generally what happens with the HD in terms of scaling? Does it attempt to scale QVGA and VGA apps to fit the screen, or does it run them 1:1, or does it vary by app?
Clearly there are several lower res apps that work fine on the device so I wondered how it was handled but I've not seen a explanation of scaling on the device and why its an issue for some apps and not others?
I'm torn between a Raphael and a Blackstone for my next handset - I'm almost at the point of convincing myself I can live without my Kaiser's keyboard...
But given the high number of random apps I've got clogging up my Kaiser, I'm worried that incompatibility with that huge screen might be the one reason to make me steer clear of the Touch HD....much as I like the idea of all that real estate.

I guess there are lots of people who don't know the answer to your questions. I'm one of them.
However, it might help if you clarify which apps you're particularly interested in. The scaling/resizing seems to be application-specific, rather than something that the HD manages. A badly-written app might not scale or expand whereas an application that was written to take account of any reasonable screen resolution would look fine.
As an example even Total Commander, which must have been written months (if not years) ago, looks fine on my HD because it expands to fill the full screen. Yet TomTom is much more sensitive to the screen resolution and many versions refuse to start up at all. (That's not to imply that TomTom is badly written, BTW.)
There are only a handful of threads in these forums about apps that don't work, so I guess that most are fine. But it'd help if you were specific about which ones of yours would be deal-breakers if they didn't scale.

Thanks for the response, my list of apps is pretty random but among others I've collected over the last couple of years and use are:
- a few astronomy apps (Asto Navigator, Astromist, PocketStars)...
- SPB Mobile Shell/diary (presume they'll be fine?!)
- Games (Age of Empires, Orions)
- Slingplayer Mobile
- Memory Map (overland GPS navigation on OS maps)
- WebCamera Plus
- I've already read a lot of the SatNav woes here and elsewhere so I'm comfortable that will be resolved anyway!

You can bet your left nut that if current apps aren't compatible then they will be soon, with both the HD and the Xperia having this resolution and becoming more and more popular. Do the websites for those apps report any kind of compatibility issues with specific devices?
If you're desperate then an email to those apps' developers might yield some answers.

Yeah, thats the way it works.
Most applications run just fine, you have more place and this place is filled with content. Other applications won't run, because they are hardcoded on (Q)VGA resolutions. One solution is the WVGA fix, so you will loose a few pixels and "simulating" a VGA screen, another solution is to play with the configurations of the applications.
However I haven't found a program that doesn't run on my HD so far, and I have already installed a lot of them.

Do you know whether it has any significant impact on application performance or is it very skinny?
Also I note that SlingMedia have updated Slingplayer with 800x480 support so that's another tick on the list!

I don't think that its significant. Even iGO8 runs with the WVGA fix.

[Q] FPSE newbie has assortment of thoughts/questions

Hey guys, I bought FPSE within the first day of getting my Xperia Play. The thing is an emulator machine and FPSE is a fitting addition. Love it so far. Few questions/problems:
1) My phone is unrooted/stock. It seems enabling the g sensor involves editing .ini files and such? Is it possible for me to do without compromising my warranty? Could you provide a link/video that explains how to do it on one of the more recent versions of FPSE?
2) What is the deal with the options for touchscreen analog and "Swipe" analog? I've only tried with Medal of Honor Underground but they're EXTREMELY hard to use. They take a strong push to get started moving, then JUMP in the direction you''re holding extremely fast, making aiming very very hard. Is this the norm with these options? Is it difficult to emulate the analog sticks of playstation?
3)Both of the above questions have to do with shooting games on FPSE. What settings do you guys use for first person shooting games? especially on xperia? I'm starting to think I should just give up on the genre for use with FPSE. (I'm not going to harp on the touch-stick support for xperia play like most, I understand thats probably really annoying to incorporate, especially with Verizon users STUCK in 2.3.2!!)
4) For PS ISOs with the "track 1" and "track2" parts, what do I do?? SF Alpha 3 has those components and I'm not sure what to do/how to rename it so it will work (with just track 1 it boots up like ps one boot screen, then black)
5) I found a SF Alpha 3 that only is one .bin file, but it runs SOO slow on FPSE, no matter what system/video options i tinker with. Does anyone have a definite rom/config for SF Alpha 3 on FPSE that they could tell me? Its one of my favorite games for PsONE.

I can't answer everything, but I'll tell you all I know
1. I've tried the G sensor on FPSE once or twice and it worked fine without having to change any .ini settings. Can you tell me exactly what you did and I'll try to replicate this
2/3. I've only used the d-pad for movement in FPS games. without the touch pad supprt I stay away from them in FPSE. I do wish there was a way to impliment the analogue sticks better without touching the screen, but till then my advice would be to stay away.
Others on here may know of a better way to emulate them
4/5. We don't like any kind of warez/downloading. My advice would be to buy a disk and rip it to get a true legal copy of the game to play on FPSE. This should also miss out any anomolies. For anything else, it would be worth going on their own forums and asking about specifics of game support.
IMO (educated guess) I think the files need to be in one file format. So when you rip the file, rip it into one iso, this should put all files on the disc into a single file, as the iso is an image of the disc
