Leaving GPRS connected 24 hours a day - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Would I be charged for leaving GPRS on 24 hours a day. I know that phone networks only charge you for information you download. But are there issues I need to address before leaving it on all day.

gprs
no you only get charged for what you download.

Battery problem

Hi,
My jasjas eats the battery. Today at 2 pm was at 100%. Now (9.50) is at 45%. I only have called one time (3 minutes). UMTS was connected, messenger connected, no wifi o bt connection. What is the problem?the battery?, UMTS enabled for a long time?, messenger?, some program?.
There's reduced standby and calling time wih UMTS.
I am finding the same.
Does anyone know of any way to tell the unit to disconnect UMTS after a set amount of time?
I cannot get a whole day out of my JasJar now, whereas I could get at least 4 out of my BlueAngel even when I was synchronising my email every 30 minutes over WiFi.
Thanks
JB

Closeing Idle connections...

Hello guys,
I am very new to PPC world i just got my HTC P3600 1 week ago and this forum was a huge help for me. Thank you very much all for the know-how you all shared.
My question is: how can i have the data connections closed after they idle for more the 30 sec?
I'd love to still be able to have a good sync with my exchange server but not have the connection idle for 2-3 h... (btw does it consume more battery if is still connected but idle?)

Internet Sharing and Charging

I have Hp Ipaq 514 When ever i use internet sharing my phone never charges through the usb however it charges through active sync i can never complete big downloads. Because the phone turns off oh yea when internet sharing is active the device shows its charging but actualy its n0t helP any0ne
Phone stops charging when you're using Internet Sharing? but it works with the SAME CABLE in Active Sync mode?
not true
my cuz has a htc gene and it charges while internet sharing is active
Can anyone help ?
When Internet Sharing Is Active But No Data Is Being Transferd It Charges But However When Im Downloading A Big File When Therez A Data Transfer It Stop Charging But The Phone Stil Sh0ws Like Its Charging But Nothing Is Happening . Could This Be A Registry Or Device Fault
USB doesn't carry the same amount of power as a typical wall charger. It might not be enough to keep the device charged while the cell radio is going full blast for long periods of time. That said, I never have any problems staying charged when tethering over USB.
any soluti0n
my cousin has a htc p3400 and he can tether overnight and his phone will be fully charged and i had a imate sp3 b4 but i never had this problem. i think its is a firmware bug anyone else with a ipaq notice this but there was this one day it download 400mb file and it charged so i dont knw what to do . i kinda have a dodgey Edge connection i have free internet but if my phone turns of i have to wait 3 hours till its free thats why i dont want my fone turning off
When u have screen on and using data your phone is using more power then its gaining from usb port.
uhm buT
the thing is the screen is turned off wifi off bluetooth off cpu at default only internet sharing and spb battery moniter running and the battery discharges very quick while internet sharing is running

Check how long you're connected towards internet

Well I connected a few times towards the internet the past month.
Now I get the phone bill and I am sure they counted to many minutes that 've used the data connection.
Now is there a logfile somewhere I can check how long I've been connected?

Mobile web - GPRS Auto Attach - does it kill the battery?

I have just set my mobile web connection to 'always on'. I've done this through the 'Advanced Config' app - GPRS auto attach: Enabled. Will this take more battery? I've read old posts for other phones, that claim this does kill battery but I've also found a post in this forum that says it doesnt! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=546359
I have had endless trouble with my data connection - not being able to connect to internet, google maps, email etc and the only way to fix it was to either toggle airplane mode on and off or to actually soft reset. I'm hoping that having the GPRS auto attach will solve this trouble.
Any thoughts?
I'm doing experiments now with the battery life.
I charged phone to 100% and left in standby overnight with mobile web connection running. When I checked this morning, after 9 hours battery life was at 98% (received 1x sms and 1x email during the night).
Mobile web has now been connected for 17.5 hours and battery life is at 79%. 22mins device usage, mostly internet. No calls today and just the 1x sms and 1x email (Im not very popular - as is evident from the lack of replies to my post )
I will do the same experiment tonight with mobile web not connected.
Hi
It doesn't drain the battery. You have a permanent connection to the network anyway to receive phone calls. When you "attach" a data connection you're phone obtains an IP address and keeps it. To get an IP address requires an initial bit of talking to the cell and once it has it, that's it, it's doing nothing unless being actively used. If you disconnect all the time you will use more power as it costs power each time you have to negotiate for an IP address. Networks also prefer the connection to remain on as it cuts down on network traffic.
The only way your power is used more is if you have an application that is using the data connection continually.

Phil
Thanks PhilipL, exactly the answer i was hoping for as my connection seems a lot more stable since enabling auto attach.
