Hi,
Every now and then when I try to send an SMS from my XDA2 I press the send button in the top left corner and all that happens is that the cursor jumps to the end of the "to" field. Nothing else?
In order to be able to send an SMS once in this stat I have to turn off and turn back on the phone part and then everything works fine. It's only infrequently but when it happens it's quite annying.
This is my second XDA2 and both were running the 1.60.00WWE Rom with 1.10.00 Radio and both suffered from the problem.
Has anybody got any ideas?
Thanks,
Ads
@ads_green,
although I can´t help you out here, I still can confirm that bug on my machine
My machine:
Vodafone Personal Assistant (Qtek 2020)
ROM-Version 1.66.01GER
ROM-Date 02/23/04
Radio-Version 1.10.00
Protokoll-Version 1337.18
ExtRom-Version 1.66.143
Software installed:
Adobe Acrobat
Funny Snake TKCreater
Mobile-Banking
PocktZenPhone
PocketWeather
Total Commander
WisBar Advanced
VITO Voice Dialer
I see that we both use the same radio version.
Anybody else can confirm that bug ?

SMS problem
I can confirm the same problem you have but I noticed the following:
When I turn on the phone from a soft reset and after entering the
PIN for the telco network, the "G" icon (GPRS) briefly pops up
and beep sound is heard. This is normal
Occasionally this "G" icon comes up again and beep is heard for no reason.
When this happen, then I cannot send SMS like you mentioned.
Receiving SMS is OK. Making and receiving calls is OK also.
Also at this time
START--->SETTINGS---->PHONE cannot be accessed.
Nothing happens when clicked.
The only way to get out is to SOFT RESET.
However one time I tried to investigate further and check the processes
and applications, open/closing other software, etc. the system
went into a HARD REST automatically.
I suspect the problem is due to the phone settings software part.
It could also be a SIM card problem or a loose contact with SIM card.
I also have the same ROM.
Anyone has any ideas?
I have the exact same problem recently and that 'G' icon keeps appearing, i find that if i turn my phone onto Flight mode then back to normal, it resolves this for a while but doesnt stop it happening!
It seems to me that we have all invested a lot of money in the Universal and there are some basic problems it has. We need to give the companies that make and distribute the Universal a complete list of problems they must fix.
My idea is to start a list that is added to by members here. Then on 1 December we should cut'n'paste the list and send as an email to whichever company provides support for you device (o2 in my case).
So, to start the list my suggestion is:
1. The Bluetooth will switch off when the camshell is shut but the BT light indicates that it is on
2. If Pocket IE is left running it will run down my battery very quickly
Okay - now just use this as the start of the list and add the problems you've found (i.e. #3, #4, etc).
The keyboard backlight button does nothing that I can see.
4) Phone does not actually start ringing until 3rd ring when switched off
5) When closed, external start/end call buttons dont light up when call is recieved
6) MSN Messenger draws the text input pannel half way up the screen when started laptop style. Flip screen to portrate and back and the MSN screen gets redrawn correctly

7) IE doesnot allow u to open more than one page?

Not true for my O2 Exec. Whether the clamshell is open, closed, laptop or portrait mode, I can still use my BT headset to make and receive calls.
Good luck with this thread. TBH I don't suppose it'll make the slightest bit of difference. While people are buying these things and the manufacturers and service provides are making money, why would they listen to our tiny voices?
8) inability to configure own extended rom, or remove and install from cd to increase available storage
9) regular crash and resets to recover memory that memory manager doesn't give back
10) inadequate access to connections when stacking connections, eg vpn over gprs to many clicks
11) inadequate camera, the worst 1.3mp ever seen and camera fails to remember setting changes on soft reset except if you pick only standard settings
12) flash on camera is totally pathetic as to be not usable
13) flash should be promoted as a torch and allow some value from it
14) inadequate ram,no ram upgrade path
15)not true VGA should have the improved FGA function per ozvga without the bugs
16) wmp not play videos in full screen
17) gprs does not keep the connection open constantly all day thus incurring the recurring cost
18) voice dialler doesn't work if clam is shut
19) hi startup memory utilisation RAM
20) hi utilisation of storage ROM
and I am sure there is a lot more if we searched this forum
21) terminal services black spots
22) remove quick launch bar
23) terminal services not sufficiently full scree, top n bottom bars can disappear
24) scroll bqrs to big, take up to much room
25) program more of the buttons
26) should be able to tweak more without using registry hacks, eg a list, on off, more, less
will it ever really end
@Simon_Darley,
Voice dialler does works great in whatever mode you place the device in be it clam (open or shut) or PDA.
Stronger flash? Develop a nuclear battery and you can even put a xenon bulb in the device.
Configuration of Ext.Rom is being worked upon by our very own super-cool Buzz. It should be here soon.
If i am not mistaken, the camera in the Universal is much much better than its predecessors. Yes, the cam is not as good as SE or Nokia's but SE or Nokia on the whole aren't even near as good as my universal The Atom with the 2MP cam will probably be a little better than the Universal.
WMP will play video's in full screen with the next RUU.
@Veletron,
My phone rings instantaneously. So, i wouldn't call this a bug. Could be device specific or something to do with O2 or T-Mobile presuming you have either of these. I own a JJ btw.
UD.
Okay list so far (please delete the faults that don't apply to you but those that require a workarounds are faults):
1) The Bluetooth will switch off when the camshell is shut but the BT light indicates that it is on

For me the following is annoying:
1) when the JJ rings with the lid shut the green and red buttons do not light up. At times in the dark I have by mistake pressed the red button and forced the call to end
2) about 20% of the times my JJ freezes when a new SMS is received. Makes the thing very unreliable because you never know that the JJ has hung up when it failed to receive the SMS successfully last time.
Kind Regards

rejects call when you answer after opening the clamshell
I find that if the clamshell is shut and I open it to see who is calling me, and then press the green button to take the call, it just hangs up on the caller. Annoying to say the least. Otherwise pretty happy now I took off the O2 set-up for the corporate one and have got used to it. Bit heavy though!

This never occurred on mine. It must be caused by a third party software. I always open the clamshell to answer a call, never had the problem.

Wow what a list of bugs ! how the hell did this device ever get through quality control and acceptance testing
if you guys are here to make a list of bugs spotted on this device, i guarentee you the list will be as long as the hills. Imate also seem to be making very little progress.
They really do need to get their skates on and start cracking out some ROM with all these updates in them

Being new to all this i can't find the backlight button for my keyboard. There is a button on the front edge, which turns on the backlight button for my screen and a light sensor near the hinge for turning on the keyboard backlight in low light. Any help identifying where this button should be :?:
Its on the front - to the right of the IR sensor window (which I must confess took me far too long to find) and has an icon that looks like a bulb.
Its doing nothing I can't do otherwise by tapping the screen or pressing a button. Now if it was mappable...

it is mappable
add the following key to the registry:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys\40C8
and create values just like another key (i.e. 40C5)
soft-reset and then you are able to program the button.
I noticed that the 8525 does not wake for new email - just get audible alert. Any way to have it behave like this for other notifications such as new txt msg or incoming call? My device spends the majority of the day in my pocket.
After some further research I found some apps for Palm that appear to do this and an app for PPC called Pocket Guard that comes close. What I really want is to make it so that my device will not wake unless I press the power button. I just want audible or vibration alerts when the device is off. Any input is greatly appreciated.
I'm confused. Anyway, try Setting->S & Notification -> New email messages
I like the way it behaves with new email - I just get an audible alert and the device does not turn on. I want to setup all other notifications to behave this way including incoming calls. I wouldn't mind pressing the power button before answering a call. There are no notification settings to prevent wake.
All other PDAs I have used turned on when receiving new email. This leads me to believe that there might be a reg hack or something to disable wake with other notifications as well.
Me too. I'm bothered by my pda2k waking up when it's in my pocket (e.g. going in/out of bluetooth car kit range, receiving call, receiving sms). The screen can come on, but the screen and easy-to-bump buttons should remain locked until one of the firm buttons is pushed.
Do the designers actually use these devices?!
The program I mentioned above is actually called ScreenGuard (http://www.pocketmax.net/) and will probably do what you want. It will allow the screen to come on but all buttons and screen are locked. You have to enter a combination of 2 programmable keys to unlock. WM5 beta is available in the support forum. I believe that are still working Hermes support but you can check it out. It didn't fully lock everything when I tried it.
I am not interested in any locking security. Just wanting to keep it from waking when I don't want it to. You also cannot use the power button for ScreenGuard.
When my device P3600 received call or sms, the device is powered up, and then all the keys are active. If the device in case some key can be press (by mistake) and activate a program on this situation.
Does any one have a solution for that?
Use the Device Lock Feature in your Today Screen.
I do not like to add one more line to the dotay screen
can I use it without add it to the dotay screen?
If you don't want an additional line on the today screen then the other option is to set the device to request a password after only one minute of inactivity (under "Settings", "Personal", "Lock").

10x, but this is not help, the lock is form power up the the device, and the device is automitly powered up when received call or sms
I use a program called "device lock" that can be mapped to one of the buttons, I use button one when you hold for a few seconds. The app locks the phone and turns off the screen, so when you recieve a call or sms the screen will turn back on but the phone will still be locked.
Have a search on the forums here for it, that where i got it from.
Cheers

in this case you can not aswers a call, when received one - because when the device is lock there is no quick way to answer that call.
or I miss someting here.

Yes you can answer a call, the device lock only lets you use the power, answer, and hangup buttons. When the call is finished it is still locked, unless you unlock it.
I use this one. http://www.mr2-power.com/downloads/DeviceLock.CAB
10x, GREAT, this will do the job

I am glad you found a way to solve your problem but I don't understand why my suggestion should not work. If you set your device to request a pin after one minute of inactivity if you receive a message the keys will still be blocked until you enter your pin. (I am talking about device PIN not SIM PIN).
And if you receive a call the answer button works even without entering a PIN.

Your solution works too, the only thing is sometimes (for example) I'm sitting on the couch using my phone for email or surfing and watching a TV program. I stop to watch something interesting for 3 minutes and my phone has locked itself with the pin lock. I have to enter the code each time this happens. It can get annoying. If I use devicelock, I lock the keys when I need to, obviously when I'm at home and my phone is on the coffee table, it doesn't need to be locked. I set my device pin lock at 2 hours, that should give the phone enough time to lock itself if I loose it...hopefully.
yeah... but when you loose your phone the device lock doesn´t matter. only reinstall a Rom and your phone can be used.

Yes, very true, but at least they won't be able to see all my contacts, appointments, notes etc. That being said, I always use FlexWallet to encrypt all sensitive information which is synchronized to my laptop.
touch screen and buttons can be locked during a call?
I followed up this thread and found it very interesting. But it does't focus all the problem:
when call's come in, your solutions are ok.
But when I want to make a call, I found there is a nasty *****, clicking to call waiting or to head speaker on, opening a note or calling my voice box etc. etc.
Then I found that it was my ear or my fingers, clicking on the touch screen or my fingers clicking hardbuttons.
I think tat during a call on the normal speaker the only buttons to be active should be "hang on" and "loud speaker on". With loudspeaker or BT on, or call terminated,s screen and buttons should come back to full function.
Anybody knows a solution to this?
Regards, and keep on, its a great forum. i love it.

Hmm this is just "device lock" that we can see in HTCplugin. In my case it does not turn off the screen. It just locks my device. Is everyone has "turn off the sreen" functionality?

I lastly tried the on-off button to block screen during outgoing calls.
I never did this before because I thought it would cancel the active call, but it doesn't.
Ok, I see it's more or less doing what I want. But it's very unconfortable. When I hit it bad, or don't hit it at all, or forget to press it?
Isn't there a posibility to have the screnn sensibility off, only sensibility, until the call is either ended, passed to outer speaker, headset or BT? or perhaps simply until I give it free manually?
It would improve safe usage of that phone remarkably, I think.
If not :-( , well, I allways can press the button ;-)
curious for what solutions you'll find on your problems with incoming calls. Perhaps that will give me an Idea.
Chears
I've complained about this on just about every major forum I have found. Hopefully, someone will eventually write an app to allow personalized device locking. I would set my trinity to not wake for ANYTHING and have ONLY the power button active. I would prefer to get audible alerts (or vibrate) to incoming calls, alarms and messages. Pressing power would be the only way to turn the device on. PIN features only annoy me. This would be very useful anytime I am not willing to immediately respond to a notification - driving, having dinner, in a meeting, etc. It could significantly improve battery life. I store mine in my pocket and accidental button press is a problem as well.
I've just started to use i-mate Jamin which is also known as Dopod 818pro/830.
As I've got first 3min free for every call I made, I need to know how long I've been on the call from the screen so that I can end my call within 3min or dial again.
I am wondering is there any software that has such function I mentioned above? I've been searching for a while but couldn't find anything. Basically I just need 3 major functions:
1. the screen is always on during the call so I can look at it anytime;
2. it can display the talking time of my current call so I know how long I've been talking;
3. Better it has time reminder, i.e. I can set a sound warning at 2min55sec or any other time I like or at any time interval.
Some info about my phone settings:
I set the PPC to be locked if unused for 1 mins and I also assigned a password to unlock it (for security reason). So after 1 mins the screen will change to a number keypad (for unlock) and can no longer see the talking time.
Furthermore, I want to be able to see the talking time when I am receiving a call. But now, when a call comes in, as the PPC is locked, I can't see the talking time either. It just display a number keypad on the screen all the time.
So the software should be able to override the phone lock function, and is alway on during the telephone conversation and display talking time in real time.
Thanks in advance for any help.
