Happy new year to all
I got my xda ii couple days ago and trying to set up the internet on it. I don't have a GPRS data plan because it's quite costly here in Canada ($20 for 3mb). I have a RAS server at home using ADSL which capable of connecting any desktop or laptop to internet using phone line dialup. However, when i try to setup the connection for my xda ii, it received the following message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed: +9059999999
---------------------------------------------------
No modem at above number. To check your
connection settings and change them if
needed, tap settings.
Settings Dismiss
My Settings:
Start\Settings\Connections\Connections\My ISP\Test1
Select a modem: cellular line
Phone number: +9059999999 (9999999 assume it's my home phone)
User name: test1
Password: xxxxx
Again, when i use a laptop to dial in from a remote location, it works. So the RAS server works fine.
I don't hear any sounds from the xda nor my home phone rings. Not sure if i need a driver for it. I m in Canada using Rogers AT&T.
Thanks
Ray
Same problem
I'm also a recent XDA II user and am experienceing the same problem with my ISP in Austrlia. As I understood the doco, we should be able to dial into an ISP just like on a PC with land line. I hope this can work.

Dialing Pattern
In the XDA I, it has Dialing Pattern setting. Default at (+EFG), where E=country code, F=area code, G=tel number). If the number u put in the Telephone Number field includes Country, then modify Dialing Patter to (G) only.

On the Australian Telstra network, to use straight GSM dail through you should set the CSD Line Type to 9600 V.32. It ain't fast be it is cheaper than the standard 2c per K on GPRS.
is this your problem

I was having the same problem you were having. I configured and got the GPRS and mms working and now all of the sudden the dial into ras using cellular gsm works ? Go figure

Let me furnish the detailed setting, assuming T-Mobile USA (adjust it accordingly if your service provider is a different one.)
Start | Settings | Connections tabb | Connections
... to The Internet ... [New ...]
General tab: [CSD Dial-up ISP Conn]
Modem tab: New ...
Name: [ISP Modem Conn]
Modem: [Cellular Line]
Baud rate: [19200] (you can leave this default alone but 9600 is high enough)
Leave Advanced ... settings alone
Country code: [1]
Area code: [425] (my default, leave it alone)
Phone Number: [4257861000]
Finish
Leave Proxy Settings alone
For free ISP's, see FAQ
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/portal.php?device=ppcpe
Back at the Connections page:
Dialing Locations tab:
Locations: [Home]
Click on Dialing Patterns ...
Put [G][G][G] as instructed by jcabuslay above. This step is critically important and where I was stuck. T-Moble tier 2 tech guy got me over the hump (first 2 tier 2's didn't really know how; it took 3 tier 2's to get it right!). Note T-Mobile US uses plain 10 digit dialing plan for US domestic long distance (optionally preceded with a 1 works too) and G fits that.
Click on Connect to connect. Or start to browse the internet and the connection is made on demand.
The first time connecting, you are promted for username and password, which are saved (but you can't get to it to see or change them; you can only delete the whole setting and recreate it in case you needed to change username or password).
I create a Work CSD setting for dialing up to work modem pool similarly. I use
http://www.mochasoft.dk/f_download2.html
for access to my UNIX account at work over the Work CSD setting.
Chances are that the LAN you dial up to at work is connected to Internet so you can avoid the hastle of finding a free ISP.
CSD connection comes handy since by and large, when you are not at work is when you need to make the connection, i.e. nights and weekends, when T-Mobile US is free - you get free data / Internet connection.
When the issue of making XDA your Internet gateway is resolved, this CSD connection would allow your laptop to have Internet on the go, see thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=6378
If you can get your XDA to behave as a wireless modem, you can create similar CDS settings on your laptop.
Have fun!
i'm trying to make an ATD call to conenct to a remote unit in order to make a CSD connection. However i get a NOCARRIER error. I called the network poeple and they tell me i need to select GPRS or CSD before doing an ATD.
Would someone agree with that ?? How would i do so ? (guessing its an AT command)
I am using a Treo 750v and when I try to setup a CSD dial-up connection I can't find the settings for: "Baud rate: [19200] (you can leave this default alone but 9600 is high enough)" anywhere.
I can select Modem: "Cellular Line" but no other sub-settings. Any idea?
Thanks!

Just to let you know that the settings provided by Vodafone Ireland DO work perfectly, BUT not in all areas of Dublin !!!
For days I was getting the message that there was no answer from the number dialed when trying to connect to the GPRS network but Vodafone Data Centre couldn't figure it out until I told them that it works perfectly in some parts of the city. They are now investigating a potential GPRS problem with some of their cells. I have found them to be very helpful if you need asistance.

Has anyone managed to get Vodafone GPRS working properly around Dublin ? I have used all the settings provided by their Data Centre but can't get it to work. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I have just unlocked my XDA II (PPC2003) and inserted my 087 Vodafone SIM. GPRS is working fine but when connected to GPRS and I either make or receive a voice call the GPRS connection is dropped. when I try to re-connect it tells me that the answering modem is not responding (isp.vodafone.ie). I need to soft-boot the device or turn wireless off then on again to be able to re-connect to GPRS. Anyone had this and can anyone help solve it.
Kevin
Can anyone help me with getiing my GPRS to work when not in the cradle...I used the information on Cingular's Development site and still no luck...I would like to use the device like my old phone, push the "i" and I was connected...any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download newest T-Mo Radio Stack (get from http links in announcment posting) Manually upgrade you radiostack (See threads/search tool for "upgrade downgrade radiostack) you will find enough info after reading a little to make this work. Prob is that ATT radio 1.3.3 proto' does not work on Cing/T-Mo network. You can leave your current ROM, but might want to switch all together to the new T-Mo stuff.

Hi,
How do you like your XDA with Cingular? I am in NYC and can only get 1 to 2 bars with an ok recpetion. Are you using media works as well?
Cant get Cingular GPRS to work...assitance?
Had an old T-mobile pocket PC...unlocked it and flashed XDA Developrs ROM. What are the settings for GPRS, I have the wireless Cingular Media Package
ROM 3.17.03 ENG

Radio 6.18.99

If someonecan email me or pm about this config. on Cingular Service. I am just having a hard time getting the GPRS/ WAP/Internet to connect. I am using a SX56. Plaese Help Someone! :?
Under GPRS
APN: wap.cingular
username: [email protected]
password: CINGULAR1
This is what I use for my GPRS connection with media works. Does your sx56 has a triangle, raoming, icon on?
I am having problmes regitering my xda I on the Cingular netowrk here in Atlanta. Cingular operate here on the 850 band and, while my device can see the T-Mo and ATT networks, I cannot register on either one. I see that folks in this post have connected to Cingular. Are they operating at 1900 in your areas?
I am in NYC and Cingular still operates under GSM 1900. I am not quite sure whether they will start to move away from GSM 1900 to GSM 850 anytime soon, but we are switching to T-mo in october.
Switching is probably a good idea. Right now Cingular are preventing roaming if a native 850 band network is available. If you travel, you will probably have problems...
Changing the sequence
Has anyone that is on Cingular tried to change the sequence of the network search once connected. Phone-->Tools-->Options-->Network-->Set Networks and then check the T-Mobile and AT&T boxes and move them to the top. That should theoretically change the search function for the networks. I.e. look for the T-mob and ATT networks and try to connect prior to looking at the Cingular ones.
Just a thought...
I am in Dallas and they are 850 around here so I have not had a chance to try this myself... but seemed logical.
Dustoff
There are a couple of reasons for us switching to T-mo:
- Hopefully by OCT family plan will still be $9.99 with unlimited Mo to Mo (I think Cingular $9.99 might not be around for that long)
- $19.99 unlimited internet plan anyway you want to use but not abuse it
- GSM 1900 MHZ
- My local sub dealer offers way better deal for T-mo phones
I am hoping that by october P800 will be free and P900 could be on a sub $150 for 1st line and a free V300 for my wife line.
Does anyone know whether this unlimited $19.99 is good for both Blackberry (I will register with t-mo and blackberry.net), cell/pda phone, pcmcia card for laptop and phone connect to laptop via usb/infared? or Do I need to purchase $19.99 for blackberry and another $19.99 for the rest?
Please advise.
I have a new SX56 and used all your settings but no luck
I have used all your settings. I still cann't get connect with cingular.
Does anyone know how to get the configurator on the simens website to send a configuration for sx56 even though they don't support it.
I know the sx1 is list on the site. Is there anyway to modifiy the config of the sx1 to match the sx56 ?
Any suggestions ?

Hi Abohsali
Many thanks for the data! I am assuming that Cingular are operating at 1900 in you area and not 850. Is that correct? Or are these settings allowing you to roam on another providers network, while still using the Cingular sim card. (you are using a cingular sim, correct?)
Regards
Chris
Hi Abohsali,
The WAP Settings works. Thanks, but the GPRS settings don't. I don't know why. I could connect my AOL Instan Messenger but when I try to check my email, it tried to connect to the GPRS.
Any idea? I'm getting tired calling Cingular, they have no clue. Thinking of switching to T-Mobile
Still can't get GSRP with my Simens SX56 (Cingular Network)
I have tried everything I've see here and at Cingular developer site.
I even printed out the paper forum. Cingular(http://alliance.cingularinteractive.com/dev/cda/home) and from this site.
Does anyone have a Siemens SX56 phone using GPRS??
I would love to know what the correct settings are.
When I try to connect I get the following:
The answering modem had disconnected. To check your connection settings and change them if need, tap settings
Help ?? Still can't get GSRP with my Simens SX56
Is anyone ready this ?? Can I get a little help
I finally got both GPRS and WAP to work. Funny thing is that IE could open wap sites if I'm on the WAP network and AOL Instant Messenger could also be run with WAP network.
GPRS is not bad in speed, I could get it to open with IE and turned off the images so it doesn't use a lot of bandwidth and loads faster.
I use the settings from above, but it only works after I called Tech Support to have my account Provisioned. So they did, and when I browse around with IE using the WAP network, a message pop up on the browser saying that Wireless Internet Express is ready to use, click on Activate.
So I did and voila, it works like a charm. I also bought IP Dashboard to monitor how much bandwidth I'm taking whenever I use GPRS. While WAP uses my minutes.
Thanks again Abohsali.
Tips for you guys...
Here's a tip for you guys...
If you use the Pay As You Go Wireless Internet Express (WIX) then the settings above will work as long as you call Technical Support to provision your account. Then the GPRS settings above will work.
But, if you go with Media Works, the unlimited one with Unlimited Wireless Internet Express, then the settings above won't work. But interestingly, the WAP works for downloading email. Before, with Pay As You Go WIX, I have to switch to GPRS to download email. Now I just stay in WAP.
The good thing being in GPRS is that it uses your data connect only, not your minutes. While WAP uses your minutes, but not data. Someone here could correct me if I'm wrong?
Is WAP without WIX free, or is there a $ .01 /kb charge?
How much does the unlimited plan cost?
Whoops, hadn't realise you were in Indonesia
Can the 8525 dial in to my internet providers access number and access the internet via dial up networking?
Thanks
Ok, here is what I am doing.
Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Connections-->add new modem connection.
My Connection - Name
Cellular Line - Select a Modem
Enter number for my dial up service
Enter Username
Enter Password
Leave Domain Blank
(no changes to the advanced section)
Click Finish
When I select the new profile "My Connection" and tell it to connect, I am again prompted for my password. I enter my password and press OK
It says connecting to "My Connection" and Connecting using Cellular Line.
This flashes up twice then I get the message:
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Edit:
one other thing that I tried was putting in my home phone number as the number to dial. When I try to connect, it doesn't seem to even be dialing the number because my home phone did not ring or anything.
Seems that Cingular does not allow this according to this thread
That really sux!
Lantern20,
I'm using a HTC Tytn in Sweden that is Operator free. I then use the chip from my company's subscription to Vodafone (Telenor). Everything works fine, including GPRS, but I get the same message as you do when trying a dial-up connection.
And, same as you, it doesn't seem to dial at all. The message comes too quick. If I manually dial the dial-up number, the modem answers in the other end, so the number is okay.
I haven't checked if Vodafone still allow CSD in their network (according to the thread you pointed out), but I do believe they do, since I already used the same chip in a Sony-Ericsson phone to dial-up. So, it seems that dial-up works with my chip.
Anybody comment???
I'm having the same problem. The strange thing is that I tried dialing manually on my phone to the ISP and I can hear the modem pick up on the other end. Any insights?
Dial-up Connection
I can get mine to connect but I am unable go load browser pages.
I had a 8125 that worked great.
I'm trying to get my Vario II to act as a wireless modem to my laptop.
I've downloaded and installed generic modem driver for my laptop, initiated the WModem program on the Vario - and Windows (XP) does detect the modem. In fact, Device Manager correctly reports a "HTC USB Modem" as present and correct.
I've also tried to create a DUN setting for this configuration but I'm not sure what setting to use. For example, do I need a username and password and, if so, what are these? Or do I need to set an actual telephone number to dial out?
Any help appreciated. I really need a connection between my laptop and Vario before I go on business next week (to somewhere without wi-fi but with 3G).
Cheers.

WM6 internet sharing does not require this
Yes, I have used the UK Vario II as a wireless modem successfully. You use the same settings in the modem as you use for GPRS and it works fine.

Thanks Paul. Where do I find these settings?
T-mobile do a good range of on line manuals and I found the settings I needed to connect my laptop via my Hermes there. I'll post details tomorrow.

I've cut and pasted this from the site at https://www.t-mobile.co.uk/personal/pages.do/help-and-advice/phone-support/phone-manuals
Find the manual for "T-Mobile MDA Vario II"
The "Featured Instructions" have a section "Connecting To The Internet" with the option "Set up a GPRS data connection for WAP and Internet"
Personally I use these setting with the software from PDANet (www.junefabrics.com/pdanet/) to connect my laptop to the outside world with my usb cable with my T-Mobile sim card (Vodafone badged TyTN)!

Bluetooth
I am trying to use another phone as a modem. The other phone is a Nokia 6120c which has no Infrared.
According to the instructions above I need infrared - is there anyway to do it via blue tooth?
I have got as far as creating a bluetooth connection between the 2; however the user/one2one/*99# settings don't seem to work.
Any advice would be welcomed.....
I have configured a sever at home to listen for dial up connections on a dedicated land line.
Can I use this to dial up with my Kaiser? I have used the following procedure to set up a connection...
- Start
- Settings
- Connections tab
- Connections
- Add new modem connection
(I am given the option to select a modem, either Bluetooth, Cellular Line, Cellular line (GPRS, 3G) or Hayes Compatible on COM1:, have tried with "Cellular Line" and "Hayes Compatible on COM1:")
- Enter my phone number
- Enter user name and password
I have used the following procedure to test it...
- Tap and hold the new connection and select connect.
On doing this I receive a dialog as follows...
"Cannot Connect
Dialed: 0117 blahblablah
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again"
When using the "Cellular Line" it goes through the "Connecting..." dialog a couple of times and fails with the above message. When using the "Hayes Compatible on COM1:" it brings the error up almost immediately.
I am using Orange in the UK
Kaiser / Tytn II
Radio = 1.65.16.25
Rom = Laurentius 9 or 10 or something
Is this possibly to do with the "CSD Line Type" configuration in which you can specify "Data rate" and "Connection element"? If do, does anyone know what these should be set to?
Is this just because Orange don't allow this type of traffic?
Is this because the modem part of the phone is FUBAR?
Your opinions and experience would be greatly appreciated.
James
not sure if its the same but
i had a pre gprs phone which
supported internet over normal cell
and it turned out that it could not
connect to a normal modem subscription
it required a special modem connection
at the network which was pretty pricy
so maybe it simply cant connect to a normal modem
Can anyone confirm this?
I find it hard to understand why a device that can be used as a USB or bluetooth modem for a laptop can't communicate with a normal modem.
Can you name the protocols or the standard that it does use?
ahem - bump - (sorry)
Most cell phone providers do not allow data connection over modem unless it is their own (dial up / in) Gateway - last time I used Orange in the UK, they were no exception. Only voice calls will be routed properly and data connections pretty fast disconnected, resulting in an error report similar to the one you got.
To verify if your provider supports data connection to other non-Orange phone numbers, you should call customer care.
