Battery Failure! The Horror! - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

After finally getting a booster antinna that works, my battery no longer is recognized in my PPCpe! All I did was take it off it's powered cradel and bam! It shuts off completely. I try to hard resit it.... nothing. I plug it back in to power and it powers up like from a hard resit.
It acts like it's charging the battery than says it's fully charged after about 30 seconds than 30 seconds later acts like it is charging agian... I tested the battery with a multi-tester and it checks out as fully charged. Just won't stay on without direct power. I've tried to let it charge to see if that was the problem but obviously not.
Anyone run in to this problem yet? Any suggestions?
(And no, the antenna wasn't installed yet... Thank God)
MrDollyMaker

If it really is a battery problem, and this does dound like it, try obtaining a broken XDA (e.g. one with a broken screen), and swap the back-sides.
Just out of curiousity: how old was it?

Spear Battery
I got some spear original batteries, if you want it jest e mail me.

Just finished talking to T-Mobile. They're going to swap it out for me and tier 3 thinks it's hardware not battery. It's also resitting now periodically and doing other strange things
I'm wondering if it got a power surge or something... I tested the battery under load with a multitester and it has plenty of charge to it. (sigh)
Now.... to downgrade the RSU somehow in 3 days! This will be a trip. I wonder if I can use the old T-Mobile upgrade patch thing....
MrDollyMaker.

good luck dollymaker, tell me how ur adventure goes...I was trying to downgrade my RS 4 a long time, and ever since 6.24.01 I really had no need any more, its the best working stack ive ever had...any way its always good to know i can go down, if i run into somthing (since TMO will never release their 2003 upgrade !!!! )

XDA Battery Problem
I too have the same problem. My O2 XDA has the same symptoms as yours. It lasts for a few seconds and then nothing. It also resets itself when on charge sometimes. I thought that it could be the battery.
How can i fix this problem assuming that is hardware related?
3.17.03 ENG
radio version 4.21.00
protocol version 32S54

I dont think they actually check your rsu or rom versions. They just make sure the screen isn't cracked, then toss them on a pile. I've had to send a couple units back that were upgraded, and never had a comment from T-Mobile. (I did revert both back to the 2002 rom, left the updated RSU though)

Just place the device in a microwave oven for about ten seconds. It won't power up and there will be no way to verify the ROM or RSU version.

I've tried everything I could think of.... Even took the battery out and tested it. It's not the battery or it's circut board. I'm positive it isn't the software due to I'm running 4.01.00 ENG and Radio is also higher.... I"m thinking it took some sort of power surge while plugged in to the charger and it didn't get filtered out.
From now on once the new one gets here, the Charger will be plugged in to a power surge bar. It's definatly some sort of hardware issue. Tier 2 and 3 at T-Mobile stated that it is after the talked about it while I was on hold.
Now to patiently wait for the new phone. A pitty... I miss having my mp3 player in my car!
As for how to fix it. I believe it's something in the main board related to the battery circuts and testing the battery for it's charge level. It keeps going back and forth between the battery having a charge and no battery.

MrDollyMaker - how did the down grade to the standard RSU go? I haven't seen any posts on it.
Thanks!

Unfortunatly, it didn't..... now it doesn't recognize the radio stack at all and doesn't recognize the sim card. I pray the sim card is not damaged.

New One Received!
T-Mobile's Replacement came today! It's brand new, granted only has the 3.14 ROM in it
But the radio stack is wow and the reception! Can't wait to see what it is to the new 4.01 ROM!

SPV M1000 Resets completely for no reason..

Dear All,
I have had my SPV now for about 4 weeks now and very pleased with it. However, twice in the last week it hasn't responded when I turned it
on and ended up removing and re-inserting the battery. When it comes back, it starts with the "Welcome to Pocket PC" setup wizard and all my data is gone.
Has anyone else had this problem. This problem has happened with both
versions of the ROM. The only s/w I am running is
Tube (VisualIT)
MS Arcade Pack (Pacman, DigDug etc)
MS Voice Command
Agenda Fusion
CityTime
Regards & Thanks
Chris
Yeah i got the same problem. But it happens when I upgraded my ExtRom from Orange.com. Sometimes it stays at suspend mode, then i have to perform a hard reset to wake up the device. Very odd.

I have had my M1000 for about four weeks too now and although it occasionally soft resets it never fails to respond to the power button. Maybe you have a faulty phone?
On a different note, you say you have Voice Command, I was looking for places that sell it in the UK but it appears to only be available in the US, if you could let me know where you got it I would be really grateful.
Hope you sort your phone out!

Im overlocking my CPU to 530 MHZ and no Trubbles so far.
Got the thing for two months now, running in this config for about one month.

Yep, I am having the same problem or much the same problem. The unite works fine until every four or five days when I notice that the bluetooth light and the green phone radio light are flashing (even though bluetooth is turned off). It does not respond to the power button and then lights go off when I try a soft reset. The only way I can get it back on it with a hard reset.
It does not seem to be a battery issue as the battery is fully charged and when I try plugging in the Charger (before doing the hard reset) the charging light does not light up. I have had the same problem with several M1000s from Orange.
Anyone have any ideas at to what might be going on?
Thanks,
Steve

With Orange Switzerland SPV M1000 I experience the following problems:
1) Bluetooth lights (blue light) and the battery lights flashes even though
bluetooth is not connected and the battery level is fine.
2) Once every other day the device (though fully charged) freezes and I end up doing soft reset.
3) Removing battery already puts the device to soft reset. Orange
4) The activeSync is running without me having to start any activeSync session.
5) Abruptly I get message the memory is full and the device then freeses.
Is anyone having the above problems? How do i resove this?
Many thanks

SAME PROBLEM AS THE REST OF YOU WHO HAVE THEIR SPV FREEZED UP VERY OFTEN. IN MY CASE IT'S EVERY 3 OR 4 DAYS, POWER BUTTON AND SOFT REST DOES NOT RESPONDE, SO IT'S EITHER HARD RESET OR SOMETIMES SIMPLY REMOVING THE BATTERY DOES THE WORK. I HAD MY PHONE REPLACED 3 TIMES ALREADY AND STILL THE SAME PROBLEM EVEN WITHOUT INSTALLING ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE BUT WHAT CAME BUNDLE WITH THE ORANGE PHONE. IS THIS A ROM BUG ???
SPV M1000 FRANCE
SD CARD 1 GB
OMEGA ONE BATTERY PACK PRO
OMEGA ONE JOURNAL BAR
SPB GPRS MONITORS.
FORTUNATELY I USE THE X BACKUP PROVIDED WITH THE PHONE TO SAVE MY DATA, BUT IT'S TIME COMSUMMING AND REPETITIVE AS AFTER EACH TIME THE PHONE RESETS ITSELF, I HAVE TO RESTORE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.
IF SOMEBODY COULD IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM, THIS WOULD HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE ME
THANKS

There have been frequent reports of this problem- Orange are aware of it, and are replacing M1000's as required. They are currently testing a new ROM, so it appears that they think it may be a ROM problem, though it could also be a batch of faulty hardware.
Another possibility
Turning off the record button seems to have helped, could it be that this is being caught and filling memory / draining batrtery?

Great when working - anyone using a GPS receiver? Tried a TomTom with an XDA 2 lead is not recognised

we got almost 30 of these at our work, it seems the only one to have this problem is... my one! so i swapped it for another one and it did the same problem... hmm, they must not like power users, the other users are idiots so they dont really mess about with the settings n all
anyhooz, ill be upgrading all of em to SE very soon and i doubt that rom will have the same glitch...
who knows... now that we can confirm (99%) that SE works on the xda II maybe the operators will now make an official upgrade to SE... they have no reason not to

Hmm. That is interesting. Only having one here - and having problems - I do not have much to compare.
Do you think the problem comes from changing the standard settings or using extra software then?
By the way the new ROM does not seem to make much difference in terms of this problem, alas!
Exactly the same thing to me...
Every 5 or 6 days... it goes of for no reason, and the only way to wake it up is to hard reset it! weird SPV... maybe some day a nice guy will come up with a solution to our problem! Hopefully...

To keep an old thread alive
Those experiencing issues with this device going into coma (requiring Hard Reset to clear)please would you post detailed accounts of when the issue occurs.
Please confirm power settings, what applications were open on the device and whether the radio or BT was on.
Does the problem occur off or on charge, if on does same problem occur if charged from travel charger not dock?
If off charge, if known - state both internal and external battery charge levels when problem occurs?
What is seen on the handset at point of coma?
Working from soft Reset through battery off to hard reset, what was necessary to restore the device and did soft reset or battery off result in a dump?
Could ROM V's and bootloader V's also be stated.
cheers guy's, together we'll crack it

 I have had my phone from about June last year. The first reset occurred about the 3rd Jan this and two more occurring in the past few weeks the last one on sat 12th Feb
The history as I can recall with the last reset is as follows. I took the phone out from work (cradle) Friday afternoon after 4pm don’t think it was put to charge again before the incident also the phone was not used very often as its a work phone. It was on stand by all day Saturday with the green light flashing but no signal input was being received as I was expecting a cal which never came only to find out the phone was off as mentioned by the caller when I called them. Got home about 530pm with the light still flashing and tried to switch the phone on after finding out no signal was received, the light then went out. Could remember this quite distinctly as it happed on the previous occasion. To activate the phone i have to take the battery and sim card out as with the previous occasion put the card in another/different phone to activate it (make a cal) then put the card and battery back in for the phone to work when it would then go through the reset process. Once working on checking, both battery powers were very low think less than 50% as when i checked some time after they were up to 75%
Am in an office with 3 other users and the only one with this problem and am on my 3rd phone since the year started. It seems to be linked with low battery power (both) and extended stand by when it completely shuts down. Trust this would help to get us a stage further.
i have had two m1000's with this problem,
orangecare stepped up for the replacement and i upgraded the 2nd to win2003se and it still does it!
i make scheduled backups now and have learnt to live with it until my contract expires..
on another seperate note..

MORE ON THIS
I had an M1000 that worked fine but a small problem occured and orange replaced it - the new one had this problem every 7 days or so - the bluetooth light was flashing although not switched on and when I try to turn phone on it wont - remove/replace bat and resets - I upgraded to ROM 2.02 from this forum but was using origional orange extended rom and it made no difference - if it is a rom problem its in oranges extended rom
I was on a 166wwe - boot loader 1.06 - dont know radio version but was still happening after DCM 2.02 WM2003SE WWE from this forum with radio 1.18.00 and original ORANGE ext rom so if is on ROM is definatley oranges ext rom that has a problem. - HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN WHILE ON CHARGE????
THEY REPLACED MY PHONE WITH A REFURB - ITS NOW FINE BUT IM NOT HAPPY
guys lets think here
were all orange subs so its got to be an orange thing (so unlikley to be hardware) - there are people here (myself included) who have upgraded radio and OS so I am begining to think it is in the extended rom on these machines - has anyone who has replaced extended rom had this trouble - I would experiment but no longer have this fault - I never thought Id wish I could get it back but now I think I can see a resolve
we need an orange customer who does not have this trouble to post extended rom on here for us all to try????? - - - Please ??????
it would be nice to crack this one guys keep plugging on
Had my M100 nearly a year now and after many many resets decided to call Orange as I would have thought this was a known problem with them. But according to technical they have never seen this before!!!
There response was ... backup your data! doh!
I told them I did and it was unacceptable to say this as the thing is faulty it takes over an hour to reload the data and it's happend 4 times since I called them 4 days ago.
PS: has anyone got a copy of the original 1.66 rom as you can no longer get it from Orange.

i have removed everythin from it..yet it is having the problem!
It doesnt harm anything but its really irritating when you are working and it restarts or when you turn it on you see it had tunred off and is restarting....

PLease Help!
As i can't find any reason for it...
Did this start after a ROM update?

Did you drop it by accident?
Have tried hard-resetting it (power & soft-reset), backup first

I encounter this before
1. restart randomly
2. hard reset randomly
3. phone receive no signal
later i found out all these symptoms was due to faulty battery packs. I have 3 battery, & 2 of it provides such problem. And these 2 are new batteries
amazingly my original battery still works fine thou it only last a day.
If your set still covered by warranty, send it back. Who knows you might have some battery pins problem instead of the battery itself or the mainboard itself is faulty.
Good luck
may be u r rite..... but i dont think so.....
i guess will have to submit it at the repair centre then
this happens to me also - the resetting just started a couple of months ago. I am using an xda mini, on which I did a bigstorage update last year some time.
I'm on rom 1.11 (date 3/14/05) and radio 1.11
Suppose I would like to update that some time, but... I've moved to Mac and my pc is all dusty! haha.
Anyway, I want to send the xdamini off under warranty, but I'm not sure if it will be a problem that I have Big-Storaged it? Should I try to clear the bigstorage and get it back to original state first, or will they not mind that it has a big storage rom version. I've got a couple of months warranty left.
thanks...
This may sound really basic, but I had similar problem with my imate jam, and it all came down to a loose battery cover. For some stupid reason the jam shuts off power when the cover is removed even before the battery is removed.
the clips on the back cover press against a contact which fires up the jam. My loose back cover was constantly cutting off power and then reconnecting. Just a thought.

Battery discharges very rapidly (20 min talk time)...

I have a IMate JasJam phone whose battery discharges very rapidly (20 min talk time). I have purchased a new battery as well but that does not seem to solve the problem.
What I wanted to ask the community are the following questions:
a. Can this be due to the radio version that I have? 1.43.00.00 - I have been using this radio for a 6 months now.
b. Can this be due to the charging unit in the phone being damaged? If so, is this replaceable?
c. I also read some threads suggesting buying like 3000 mAmph battery...rather than the standard 1500 mA. Is this really required?
d. Are there any other options to debug this problem?
Appreciate your responses...please help...
Does your phone also shut off for no apparent reason?
I had the same issue with the phone shutting off randomly as well. I took the phone apart and found the battery post was broke off the main board. I think the contacts being lose was also draining the battery or it could have been other things wrong as well. Bought a new phone and all was right again. I get 4 days standby with WM6 now.

No it does not shut-off automatically. However, I am tempted to find out if the batery connect (post) you suggest is lose or not. I remember dropping my phone a couple of times at least, maybe that caused it.
Buying a new phone is an option always, but unfortunately, I spent a lot of money when I bought this phone and would not like to junk it just yet...I am hoping someone here has other ideas that I can try out before giving up on this phone...
Anyways, thanks for your suggestions...
maybe its the rom you have installed that is causing the drain or maybe it is the radio ,is it cooked or a stock rom. If its cooked try flashing a stock rom and see if the battery issue is fixed

I have a feeling it could be that post if it all of a sudden started. I went radio/rom jumping for several weeks (and it isn't a bad idea to either reload a fresh rom or go back stock and check out your usage) and nothing helped. But it is a great way to narrow it down to device or software.
What to be prepared for though, if you do dig in your phone (assuming you have no warranty and are prepared to do do it), the case was the reason my post hadn't completely broke off. Once the case wasn't holding it on anymore it broke off completely. Make sure you have a backup phone to go to if you can't go without your phone. I even got cute with it and tried to solder the post back on. It lasted about 3 hours before it broke off again. lol

another overheating thread

hi, I have a hermes 200 with the following rom (i plan to update tomorrow)
rom version: 3.54.255.3
rom date: 07/05/07
radio version: 1.48.00.10
protocol version: 32. 81.7020.20H
extrom version: 3.54.255.104
this bloody thing overheats and loses all battery power in under 6 hours and it annoys (its even causing problems with my girl cause she thinks that im switching it off!!)
I have done soft resets and removed the 2gb Sandisk card and nothing. removing the card has helped a bit but still, I know that its not a battery issue has I have two hermes and the other one doesn't give me problems, I have put the microsd on the other and no heating or battery drain. I don't leave push email turned on or anything all settings are on power save mode. the problem is that I bought the problematic one on second hand when I fu***d up the first and I had no hope for the repair but now it is repaired but came back very very scratched and looks ugly. I have swapped batteries but on the problematic one they don't last while on the other they do. today I tested both phones and in under 2 hours one lost 20% of charge and the other nothing. is there a problem with the hardware or rom and how do I fix it? its boring and annoying to have my phone dying everyday. other problem is that im in Mozambique and theres nothing like aftersales support or authorised repairshops here. please help as im tired of this, if the other wasn't so badly scratched and the camera is not working I would throw the problematic one on the fire....
it also fully charges the battery in under 2 hours!! no matter what battery it is, using the same charger the good but ugly and now cameraless one takes a lot more time to fully charge. I think its a hardware problem, schh im stressed out.
on another note, does anyone know where in mpumalanga-south africa or swaziland one can get new covers for the hermes? the black ones.. mine are both gunmetal/silver
oh and what are the best softwares out there for the hermes is there an "official" list from the site?
cheers and happy ppcing

"ROM update for your device imminent"

From HTC Support, after getting annoyed of the poor performance of the HD2
Hi Edward, thanks for your email. There is a ROM update for your device imminent. we are just waiting for it to be uploaded to the website. in the meantime, there was an update back in january which you might like to try unitl the new one is released: http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=297&cat=2&dl_id=856 best regards, Pete Whiteley HTC
Im currently using the ROM you linked to and my phone seems to run fine!
Im just waiting for the new 1.72 rom to be released for non operator HD2!
its **** on mine, always runs slow, does my head in! hopefully have a desire on order
There's 2x HD2s in our house, both which have been updated to VF UK 1.72 ROM.
It may just be a coincidence, but soon after they both started acting weirdly, with one now not booting up being off for repair (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=638210&page=4).
The other only booting up on a charger but being stuck in a cycle of boot, HTC white screen, vibrate, power off, power on and repeat

I had the above cycling problem when plugged in when using a replacement battery i got off ebay... my standard battery or the other spare battery didn't have this problem..
Could be a bad flash if a ROM runs badly. These things can happen.
Thanks for the suggestions
madindehead - Thanks, but original battery, so perhaps unlikely?
stefanclark - Interesting. Not at all up to speed on ROM flashing. Can you explain how I can do that on the constantly rebooting handset, or point me in the direction of thread that gives me step by step instructions, please?
Corrupted Data sent to a device during flashing of ROM can result in what you described. You might want to check your computer to see if there are problems with your computer.
Try running MEMTEST86+ for a couple of cycles on your computer just to be sure. For 1 device to break after updating the firmware would be bad luck. For more than 1 device breaking after updating, some thing is wrong some where.
Do you experience BSOD in Windows or Kernel Panic in Linux? If so, run MEMTEST86+ or your favorite RAM test programs for a couple of cycles to see if it is the culprit.
Phew!
Well, it seems like it was a bent battery pin, as per yarod_g14's post on page 1 of this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=658944. Bizarre really! HD2 now sat happily on my desk, charging away.
Sounds nice, hope it is true...
Too many days only to upload a ROM to their servers, don't you think?
Best regards

Yes, it is true. I’ve not had any major hang ups on my device since it came back, and have been using the little red reset button inside the battery cover if I need to reboot. Oh, and I have the ‘soft rest’ app on HD2 Tweaks as well. No repeat of the past problems, so it must have been a battery pin issue.
