I have seen samples of stills taken with the camera
Can someone please host a short sample film taken with the camera.
Or at least state what resolution fps and file types are used.
Thanks.
umm, well this wasn't taken in the best of conditions to be fair. And I took it in landscape and have not managed to turn the thing round so prepare for a cricked neck.
You will also need QuickTime 6.4 to play it as it's an MP4.

In case you can't make it out, it's concordes last touchdown on Wed 26th Nov, at Filton Airfield, Bristol taken with the xda 2. Not great but OK i think.

Hi.
I'm very surprised that there are no sample videos recorded with Xperia available (30fps VGA video recordings). Exceptions are old video captures made with older firmware. Those are not great quality (compared to e.g. INNOV8).
Do somebody know where to find some video samples made with retail model of Xperia (or could someone made one in full quality so I can consider this capability ) ?
Thanx.
Note: The X1i (Euro version) of the phone is the only one that supports 30FPS VGA video. The USA version (X1a) supports 24fps QVGA recording, similar to past ericsson phones.
Also the X1i uses h.264 where as the X1a does not. Video recording quality on the international version will be about double the quality you will see on a US-Spec model.
Point being, if you are in the USA looking to get this phone you're not going to see the same quality from samples released now since the phone just started shipping the UK,Germany,Sweden etc.
Thanks for info.
I'm from EU. I've seen a few samples in VGA/30 fps from Xperia, but also these were not on par with INNOV8 (on the other side, I must admit INNOV8 has "shocking" quality of video recording). INNOV8 is not in the market yet (or it was released at the same time as Xperia) and there are a lot of video samples from users on the web (incl. you tube).
I would be satisfied if recording quality of X1 is moderately better than the sample I've seen a long time ago.

Just a thought.
The video capture on the youtube videos seems ok but the quality of the sound doesn't seem much better than an am radio.
Maybe I won't ditch my n95 just yet...

Hmmm, not bad at all. I had this horrible feeling it was going to suck as every HTC phone I have seen made it look like HTC were allergic to decent cameras. I had hoped that SE would insist on something better than your average HTC phone though.
forget movies @640x480, thats thumb cinema.
if you have a lot of light, the framerate will increase, but at fast movements, the picture will go very blocky (distorted and unshape). its absolutly not comparable to nokia n95.
it`s horrible, like all htc devices. i hoped that sony will insert a hardware codec and/or sony/zeiss lenses, in view of the good name of cybershot. BUT NOTHING OF THEM :-(((
but the cam it`s comparable to the diamond`s cam.
photos are ok and better than n95`s pictures!really!, if you remove the battery cover of the diamond. (diamond`s lens will have better view without battery cover`s plastic lens)
but the videofunktion is realised only by software codecs, like all htc wm 6.1 devices.
that stinks and suxx! lol
cheapcheating. i will give 10 bucks more, when htc will insert hardware video encoding of vga res or more with 30 fps *G
and i saw the x1 will save as 3gp, what about h264 vids? most 3gp has got only 15 fps
quality
Quality of video capture is not that bad at all.
Definitely way better than that of HTC Touch/PRO/HD.
its not better than diamonds capture quality. its equal
and the diamond can store the vids as mp4.
i can`t find on my x1 the function to select storing codec.
(an other vid cap application could fix thiz)
looks pretty good, but the youtube samples of the INNOV8 still look miles ahead...
but what the hell, its not meant to be a cam after all
i dont have to look @ youtube.
i filmed with my own x1. and at vga it suxxx.
when you move, its very blocky and you got a lot of lost frames.
tho years old n95 takes 30 frame vga videos under all conditions.
(low light/fast movement)
useless to talk about filming in low light conditions with x1 @640x480.
its slideshow style. and if u using low light option, 1-2 pictures will
taken, and what you see is only blur/swirl effect.
and the LED lamp .... :-((
For me, quality of these samples is more than sufficient...

Of course there are better mobiles for video capturing (innov, renoir, pixon,...). But in no way you can capture comparable video with Touch Pro or with (e.g.) C905.
the only video i can download is the second one.
the video is fluid, but in daylight filmed.
and take a closer look to the movie. while moving, its very blocky and very unclear.
(set player to pause, and slide with the timeline slider. view captures from randomly tryed timemarks. then you will see, what i mean.
but a lot of people cant see the artefacts in realtime. i am an advanced videoviewer/computerfreak, and it hurts me!!!in realtime viewing, too!)
temporarly a can`t take photos or video outside, because i`ve hurt
my legs and can`t stand longer then 2-3 seconds. :-(
but next few days, everything went`s okay, i will take some
demo mov/pix for you. and than remind my words.
and take a closer look the the used audiocodec.... 8khz mono.
and exactly this will it hear like.... :-((( on nokia phones it`s much better.
hopefully, we can wait for software updates, or registry hacks (samplingrate/other codec).
the sound recording quality in video mode is POOR!
but, this only a result of the samplingrate. with other audio recording tools
with samplingrate @44,1, the quality is very good.
I have a sports publication and we do interviews with athletes and coaches. My writers currently use handheld video cameras such as the Flip or Kodak lines to do these videos and then we upload them to our system. Obviously the quality isn't great but we still get nice clean videos that our customers enjoy. Is anyone here able to compare the quality of the video from this camera to something along the lines of what we are using?
Also what are the options currently for live streaming? I assume since most Android apps can be used I could continue using USteam for live video? Again I understand this camera isn't going to replace a high end camcorder but if we can get decent quality I think it would be a good purchase for me.
With the camera still being rather new I'm having trouble finding many sample pics and videos so any links to those would be greatly appreciated and what I would really like to find is some sample streaming videos. Thanks!

It's quite capable of shooting short videos but being built as a camera may not be easy to hand hold if you are primarily going to use it for video capture since there is no proper hand grip.
The picture and video quality are very acceptable but it's not a cheap device.
If your writers have smart phones they can just link the Galaxy Camera to the Hot Spot of the smart phone without having to add a data plan to the camera for uploading or streaming the video?
You should go try out one at your local dealer and see for yourself if it suits your needs.

Android apps work just as well as on an SGS3, zooming apparently doesn't work in some 3rd party apps, but a review mentioned it's being worked on. It won't replace any pricier camcorders or SLR's, but if you get it at a fair discount from its usual over £400 price tag, it's an ok find. If you want good video and Wi-Fi check out Sony's NEX series.
You could always use Youtube for live streaming as well as UStream or similar. The camera has optical image stabilization which is quite good from what I've seen, it compensates nicely even at maximum zoom.
This video might be shot thru a window, looks a bit like that, but still a nice example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV7jOJt7rqM

Would be great if we had a thread with some tips how to get the best photos with the Z1.
Any tips? Please share. I for one would love to dive in the magical world of digital photography. Think the Z1 is a great starting point.
Maybe we could even use this knowledge to create an awesome camera app for our z1.
I dont have a Z1 yet (planning to get one soon as my contract expires) but from what I have reading, Manual mode + Iso 50-200 seems to get the best result.

Well, here's a couple of tips to start you off:-
1. Noise is an issue with the current camera firmware.
The best way to address this is to shoot in Manual mode where you will have a greater control over the shot.
Look at the ISO value and where possible change it to ISO 50. This will give the clearest noise free image possible.
2. Don't use Digital Zoom. Frame correctly and crop your images.
Often I hear of owners looking to zoom in as much as possible before taking the shot.
Whilst that is fine and dandy on cameras which have lens that support optical zoom, never ever use digital zoom.
Instead, take the shot using the full coverage of the shot (no zoom). This will then allow you to 'crop' the image to whatever zoom you wish and you can perform as many crops as you wish from one shot (top, bottom, left, right, centre of a shot)

Aha! And which resolution do you advice in this mode? The full 20 MP resolution?

I saw an ad off Sony in which they suggested that one could do a 3x digital zoom without a compromise in quality. But I agree, why not take a full frame shot and zoom afterwards.
Btw nice to see you here Beards. How is your HD2

Depends on the shot...
If I still want to use Image Stabiizer or HDR I will change from 20MP to 8MP as 20MP does not support either of these features.
Further, for night shots the camera lens is not looking for stacks of detail. As such often for night shooting you can get away with a lower pixel shot.

Yes, you can do the 3x digital but once you have done it this can lead to the next shot being over zoomed, that and it's always better to crop as you know.
P.S. Yes mate..... Nice to see you too.
And yes, I still have the HD2. Kept it for sentimental reasons
If Sony fixes the camera software, we'll all see a enormous difference in quality! Setting everything to manual will give you much better results. Now I tried the "Focal" camera app from the Playstore, and the low light shots are really, really awesome! The app itself is very minimalistic, but produces stunning results with the Z1! Give it a go, I'll try to upload some shots I took when I'm home!

kept and still using mine hehe, anyway shouldnt we zoom in 3x losless(?) first then crop the photo? any further zoom than 3x is going to substantially lose the quality then?
im hoping to get my Z1 tmorrow so i can try out my theory hehe

Ahh a fellow HD2 user. We are but a dying breed...
Re the 3x lossless digital zoom.
There are two issues here:-
1. All the 3x lossless zoom does is do what cropping does . It just restricts it to 3x to avoid over zooming where the shot would then look too pixelated.
2. Once you apply 3x zoom on any image that is it, you can't go back and say "blast! I should have zoomed in a bit less".
At least with the full frame you can make as many different crops as you like and apply it to any part of the image.
In other words where digital shooting is concerned shoot full then crop. 9 times out of 10 the software PP will handle it better anyway.
I would advice to download a more capable camera app for the moment until Sony fixes the severa problems they are having.
Otherwise I would NOT recommend using the Auto mode because right now it's seriously underperforming choosing the Manual setting would allow you for more options of course.
Turn off stabilization when capturing videos if you value the field of view because it's not OIS, this is Digital meaning it is cropping the picture instead otherwise the Steayshot feature is pretty solid
I am perplexed. I've read the user manual and it seems to be lacking on technical details.
Specifically, what is the fps and resolution of these "smooth motion" videos?
Tomorrow I'm recording hand held walking around footage for the first time after moving up from an s3... I'd like to get the video stabilization without 30 minutes of time on my pc post processing, at 1080p.
With of course the rear camera. The full hd from camera is great but washed out.
Thanks

Hey guys!
The other day I went on a trip to Hamburg, Germany and I got to experience the "Miniatur Wunderland" (in English "Miniature Wonderland", in case your German and common sense are both lacking). It was one hell of an awesome experience. As I was walking through the modeled cities, I decided to test the 4K capabilities of my, at the time, rooted and modded Sony Xperia Z1. If you're interested, you can watch the video below:
See for yourself and let me know what you think!
Here's my opinion on 4K video:
When downscaled to 1080p the quality it looks amazing. Although I don't have a 4K monitor yet, if I do zoom in on the 4K video it looks like the details are still a bit lacking at the full resolution (of course I'd have to confirm this with a 4K monitor). In low light however, there is so much noise that the 4K video won't have any more details than a 1080p clip. But hey, what can you expect from a camera sensor that small. Apart from that, it was VERY difficult to keep the phone steady when recording, since it didn't feature any stabilizer for 4K video. But overall, you may colour me impressed!
Nice video!
I guess you must have a large capacity sd card .

As a fun fact, which may or may not be somewhat useful to some: at the Miniatur Wunderland I took 38 videocips in 4K, which are 6.11 GB in total file size.
That's not as bad as I thought initially, because I was indeed worried about the total size. Also, I recall that it never shut down due to overheating, which seems to be an issue when recording for too long. My longest clip is about 1:15 (just over a minute) long, and I recorded with minimal time in between the videos.
