db_notify_events database growing - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

A few months ago, with the introduction of Windows Mobile 2003, www.xscale.de found a bug in it and provided a downloadable fix. This bugfix also was integrated in PocketPlus, and on all machines I had (iPaq 5550, 4150) it worked flawlessly. On the XDA II however, I only see the db_notify_events database growing and growing .....
Anyone any clues? I expect loads of stability problems ........

It's due to be fixed shortly. Plus Scray Bear are working on a fix which will work on the Xda II as well.

JVM for pJava on XDA II MS PocketPC (2003)

I have an XDA II running MS PocketPC version 4.20.0 (2003) Rom version is 1.52.00WWE.
I have reviewed all previous posts on the JVM subject and appreciate the XDA II is new and therefore may not be as many users out there who have tried a JVM yet. Hopefully someone can help me.
I want to run a pJava application that was built using a Standard Java 2 complier for deployment on the pJava environment. That works well on an IPAQ running Jeode. However the IPAQ Jeode does not run on the XDA. I am awaiting a response from Esmertec as to whether they have something suitable. I tried Ewe but that does not work. I can purchase J9 to try but before I do, I wonder has anyone got a JVM to run on XDAII, Windows PPC 2003 sucessfully. The app loads over the air so happy to have some one point at it if they have this configuration (XDAII MS 2003)and a JVM installed and running.
TIA
David
what about the one from sun ?
or is that java1 ?
Update on some progress.
I cannot find as such a JVM on the Sun site in Archive (EOL) that can be installed on PocketPC 200X. If I am missing something please advise.
On IBM site could not get past the login for trial S/W
Ewe did not work.
Creme did run and has my application half working so best so far. Lots of bugs that were not there with Jeode on IPAQ.
Could anyone send me the Sun JVM?
regards
David
Running VMs
I had Ewe running fine on the XDAII last month, this month I switched to Superwaba as it works closer to the way standard J2ME is supposed to. Haven't gotten around to testing custom code on it yet but the samples load without a hitch. The Jeode is certified so runs even smoother and I have heard of people using it on this device, plan to switch to that soon.
. . and oh yeah, the EOL stuff from sun won't get you far, it's ancient.
The IBM packages are great and even were when I tried them 2 yrs ago.
But yes, their downloading process is a pain, I had to pick up half a GB of Websphere Studio Device Developer from their site to get what I needed.
If you're really serious about your work I can send it to you on a CDROM.

somethings comming which may make it easier
Appreciate the input. Making some progress with Creme, issues with Jeode. Will need to migrate away from pJava going forward but enough progress for the moment. Again appreciate the support.
regards
David
As with so many of the JVMs they say:
We offer Redmond Decaf for hardware manufacturers

which means it's unlikely to appear on Handango as a cheap download.
O2 UK, in their original marketing for the device, said that a JVM would be released with a ROM update in the near future, however they seem to have removed all references to this from their website. Surely there's a legal issue here: promising something to encourage people buy a product and then reneging on the contract. What would happen if they had said "if you buy this product we'll send you £50 in the post in a couple of months' time" and did the same thing.
Word from O2 is Rom versions above 1.6 comes with JVM supporting MIDP but apparently not pJava :-(

Now, they include the hx2000 series, but the hx2110 has got the same amount of RAM that the Magician has. Am I missing something or does this mean that WM 5.0 theoretically would run on a Magician?
Yes nothing to stop it running techinically but it's just getting hold of the right 'flavour' of it for the magician (perhaps the HP one will be close?).
Be content with WM2003 SE - at least it's stable and all the software works. I had WM2005 on my XDA 2 for about a week, and then went back to WM2003SE as nothing worked properly.

If I'd be one of those content guys I'd still be running Windows 3.1 on my computer. I always want to try new stuff and half of my software on my Magician are betas.
I also guess that the version you used was a beta and thus not much worked.

heh, thats why companies have not released upgrades and new devices yet. They need to properly deploy it to each target device so it works* as its supposed to
I have O2 mini. But looks like O2 support is worse.
Everyday I go to their seeo2 website just to check whether they have upgrade for my o2 mini, but the website always say "your current one is up to date".
Well, they must have very intelegent software there that they can detect my o2 mini is version 1.11 WWE instead of original 1.03 WWE
Just my 2 cents

Yes but you _still_ can't run a whole bunch of software right now as it's plain incompatible..

Yeah, that much I understand. We'd need a ROM that is compatible with the Magician before we can use it, and there's nothing that points to that it will ever be released, but _if_ it comes, I'll certainly install it since WM5 now is final and not beta anymore

One upon a time....

I use to have a XDA 2 (well, SPV M1000) and (the important thing) a folder named "My XDA 2 must have". The software I use most, the software to backup, the software to keep not only to try. Like:
1. Sprite Backup
2. Visual IT Rough Guide to London (like A-Z map to central London + extras)
3. Splash ID
and not last
4. TomTom 5 .... and others that I miss already.
And THEN, here it is, I waited so long for it, (Exec) that I decided to switch from Orange, to O2, (Orange don't have this even now). Three days of "testing"...Well the device is great....Windows 5 isn't. (At least for me.)
My folder (My XDA 2 must have) is now "The software that doesn't work on WM5" ...None of the four named programs work...it takes ages to charge, it's slow, everything has changed...and how about that 'program' included "Clear Storage"??!!!
I thought it was something like remove programs, not a bloody HARD RESET!
Everything seems to say about Windows 5.....WHY FIX IT IF IT AIN'T BROKEN??!!!
BTW: Does anybody know a decent Wi-Fi Connections Manager that WORKS?? (Hitchhiker crashes my Exec, Retina Scanner wants to know what my socks size is when registering, Wi-Fi Companion Doesn't Install in WM5.........)
I am glad I didn't sell my SPV M1000 yet....but I want to....I love the Exec, but hate what it does...or rather what it doesn't!
..............helps us all !!!
You seem surprised that a major version upgrade (WM2003 to WM5) comes with occasional problems. Didn't we see the same when we changed from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95?
Later versions of desktop operating systems have some backwards compatibility built in, but with the limited resources of the PPC platform I guess they couldn't achieve everything.
We may not know what they are yet , but I'm sure WM5 has built-in features that drive the platform on another big leap and over time we'll take them for granted. I looked at my XDA2 last night (now two days-worth of dust gathering on it) and was reminded how fast it responded to commands, but it looked dated already compared with my shiny new Exec.
Don't forget, we're early adopters of WM5 and we're always going to have problems. When ROM upgrades are released and developers get new versions out for us, we'll wonder how we ever lived without it!
In case you haven't seen it yet, there's a thread running over at www.tekguru.co.uk listing the software that works perfectly on WM5. I found it useful when looking for replacements for my old WM2003 versions.
I have #2 and #4 working (for #4 you need TT 5.1 - d/l the update from their site)
Reinstall from fresh I reckon. And you are using activesync 4 not 3.8 still?
I agree with SiliconS.. I'm always wanting the very latest of everything (hardware and software) and to be honest, I'm surprised how good windows mobile 5 is!
There are many problems, like icons disappearing and speed etc..but they're not life threatening.
I only hope that the providers are going to keep up with the developers and release their specific patches..if not then I'll have to convert to the Jasjar rom
I love the MDA PRO even with it's problems.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll try these options as well.
BTW, anyone has any problems with the AvantGo software?
Also
#1 Try googling : Sprite Backup v3.2.0 build 2487.
Should be working with JJ.
Best of Luck.

This is real? had you used and work with restores?
Thanks.
From the Sprite Backup developers website:
"Sprite Backup is only compatible with devices using Windows Mobile 2002 and 2003. Windows Mobile 2005 devices cannot use Sprite Backup. We will be releasing a new version that will be compatible with these devices in the near future. Please keep visiting this site for updates."
I did try the version you mentioned but no luck. I use a Exec not a JJ...coud that be it? Thanks anyway...and damn I need a backup program...[/quote]
Here I am after another whole day of reading forums, installing and uninstalling, hard resets, trial and error....and things like that.
As far as the XDA is concerned....I feel better about it now, installed SPB Pocket Plus (works a dream), SPB Finance (great 'cuz it syncs with Quicken), and most of all, swiched to "Corporate" mode...and man, it is FAST now !!!
As mentioned before, Sprite Backup doesn't work, AvantGo works but not as it should, SplashID....nope. I did try eWallet, which works ok on the desktop but not on the XDA.
It's all good fun though.

I'm thinking that I might go for a hard reset and choose Corp, but I don't know how to set up the GPRS details. How did you get GPRS working for Corporate Mode, or haven't you needed to?
I do find the settings for all these connections v.confusing. I just want it simple, like my laptop! One connection does all...
Now that you mentioned that, I wouldn't know if I need different setting yet, as I am still on Orange for the next couple of days until they port my number. Interesting to see if it works though.
I've tried today the GPRS, G3 connection and it worked without changing anything. (In Corporate mode)

CellTrack for PPC? Beta release available

Seems like someone has finally made a start on developing a PPC version to the CellTrack which was only available for smartphones running Windows Mobile from http://celltrack.spv-developers.com.
I found this while googling CellTrack for a PPC version. It seems there is a beta version out for the I-Mate Jam which will work with other PPCs running WM 2003. The app ran on my MDA II but would only show the LAC and the CellID since it is a testing version while the bugs for transitioning the program from Windows Mobile for Smartphones to the PPC Editions.
Check the bottom of the page:

I haven't found anything close to this yet so for the moment, it looks like this is the best we'll get.
sorry digging up old thread, but unfortunately even the site is down. did you managed to keep track of the file 20051209_NiceRIL.zip ?
Someone else found

Hitchhiker?

Anyone try this yet?
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/
I'm going to try it this weekend but wanted to post it in case anyone needed something like this.
Yes, I've used it for a few years. It works fine on WM2003SE, but starts to have major issues with WM5 and WM6. Although it runs on 2003SE, it still likes to crash instead of close normally. Seeing as it's been a beta program for 3 years, I'd imagine it hasn't been updated or bug fixed in those years.
It really need to be updated to work with WM5/6 and to get rid of its lingering bugs.

I've noticed the bugs. I'm looking for alternate software that will do this. Meanwhile I'm also testing out StreetHawk.
Looking back thru google, refferences to "Streethawk" are all 3-4 years old.
Most of all the links I've found point back to the WifiWoWum website.
Is streethawk a seperate program, or did it mature into what is now Wififofum? If not can you post a download link.
UPDATE: I found a download link for Streethawk, its a .01 ver from 2004, so it does look like it matured into WiFiFoFum
which has a current ver. 2.2.11 Released 1st June 2007. This looks like a better app to use.

WiFiFoFum is much better for sure. I'm still looking for something like Hitchhiker...something that will just automatically connect to open hotspots without bothering me. So if I'm driving, it's just connecting to random open hotspots with the best signal as they become available. I also use WiFiFoFum
