Pocket Pc ROM Downgrading Question - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I have a t-mobile pocket pc and I flashed the it to the 4.00.16 ENG T-Mobile US ROM. I dont really like this rom and I want to flash it back to the original one. When I tried to flash it back, i got a error saying "cannot execut the remote communication program. please make sure that the usb/serial cable is properly connected."
i tried doing this with a serial cable, the t-mobile crade and a usb cable but had no luck with all three.
any suggesstions??

heya, rpabla.
Sorry to hear about your problems, but there is a way to go back... it is not as easy as going forward, though.
What you need to do is flash your rom using the SD CARD method... What this means is that you have to use a specially prepared SD Card -- one with the desired ROM on it, and flash your device from the bootloader.
Here is a link to some detailed instructions on how to do it, but you need to understand that it requires an SD Card Reader and an SD Card that will be erased for the process...
Here is the link...

Good luck, please post as to how you resolve this issue.

XDARit problem reading/writing SD card

I've saved my ROM to a SD card, but the XDARit program will not read it, I get an error: Did not find correct flash signature, aborting! - and it does not matter if I read .nb1 files or .img files.
When I try to write an image (.nbf file) to the card, it finishes in about 1 second, saying it wrote 65026 blocks ??? I try to write only the Windows CE part, since my boot loader is at 5.15.
Any ideas - I tried reading/writing on different PC's with different card readers, but always get the same error/behaviour. So maybe it's me?
Hope some of you gous can help.
Best regards,
Allan
If it's bootloader 5.17, read the instructions regarding 5.17 on the site...
I have Boot loader 5.15 - ie. the good old one
As I mentioned, I'm running boot loader 5.15, so all the nice tricks applying to 5.17 are not relevant, sorry. Interesting reading, though.
Any ideas why I can't read or write the SD card?
Best regards,
Allan
Oops, sorry for not reading your post completely..
No clue. I've been using XDArit extensively over the past few days. And while it's not a miracle of UI design, it does work for me. Using NT/2000/XP ? (It doesn't work on 95/98/ME)
I'm running Windows XP on both the PC's I've been testing with.
Any other clues?
Best regards,
Allan
Hi !
I have this problem also.
Thx for any helps.
I had the same problem, the SD card was locked as read only...
Sorry, the SD card is not read-only. But even if it was, shouldn't I be able to read the image from it anyway? I can't read and I can't write - hmmm.
Best ragards,
Allan
Hi all !
I have solution this problem.
Try anoder type of card in XDArit. For example try the SM card. Because the XDArit not recognize corretly the card type.
Sorry my poor english.
Best regards,
Sebi
In first: Sorry for my english In Second...
It's happen then you use any USB Hub in any type of it. For example if you cardreader don't connect directly to USB port in back of you case, but to any another connector (USB2 on motherboard for example or in you mouse) Try connecting cardreader directly to usb in youe case (motherboard) and all should be OK!
One more thing!
You should use USB 1.1 or 1.0 CardReader, only. Not USB 2.0. This program don't work with this protocol.
How about Usb travel Flash ?
I'm using a 6in1 travel flash. I be able to read up the SD Image backup created by My MDA yesterday using XDArit Read option.
I use XDArit to create a new image and restored back again, it shows that the files are still the original one that created by the MDA not XDArit.
It seems that XDArit not be able to write to the SD Card which was written once.
Dear LeAlex, please advice.
Thanks. There are many users waiting to upgrade theirs' ROM.
I'm using WinXP Home SP1 with 5.1.2600 drivers ? any problem
I forget to mention that I'm using WinXP Home edition with SP1.
The usb driver info for this travel flash is 5.1.2600.
Microsoft so said that USB2.0 is included in this SP1.
Any solution ?
dont think so that xdarit cant run on usb 2.0, i use xdarit on billionton usb 2.0, must change the usb mass storage driver to billionton driver cd, xdarit work fine, but when i try this methode in xp mechine it doesnt work coz billionton dont make special driver for xp

Could you try to reformat it?
because I formatted my sd card with my ipaq 3850 then sdcard reader cant write it becaouse of readonly. So if you format it on xda, I think you can write it

I had the problems that you guys did...
and I ended up using the old version that you can find in some of these threads and that solved my problem...

Thanks a lot for you answer, but I need to know how to do a USB FLASHING, my SD card slot is probably broken so I cannot use SD card....
I read, that it is possible to flash MDA with BIN file (mtty.exe program). Does anybody have experience with this type of flashing?
Where can I find BIN versions of ROMs?
my bad

I cannot upgrade with exe, because it needs ActiveSync and WM200X installed..... i think.
:-( My 2003ROM is broken.
Thanks for your replies, I'm trying to solv this problem nonstop since sunday.
Maybe just throw MDA in garbage could solv my problem...
Bootloader 5.15 works and GSM OK. Thats all....
So, why do you think your SD-Slot is broken?
Have you tried to insert a empty SD-Card in your devuce, enter bootloader, making a backup of your exisiting ROM to your SD-Card and the reenter the bootloader?

Thanks for reply..... I tried to backup and load the ROM back, but
1) after download to the MDA, everytime bad checksum and cannot start win.
2) I tried SD card test in bootloader and everytime test said "TEST ERROR"
3) I tried 4 different SD cards with same results
4) I tried many ROMs (2002 and 2003) - same problem "Checksum is not correct"

Explain this a little bit more....
When you have backup the ROM via bootloader to the SD. You get there a checksum error?
What happens when you soft reset the device after backup and then reenter the bootloader?
When you're trying to install a new ROM on your device, what for SD-Card Writer are you using? Internaly build or external device?

I'm using external SD reader (USB) - I was not able to do it with internal PCMCIA reader, so I borrow one.
When I try to do backup ROM to SD via bootloader it is fine, but when I try to give the ROM back to the MDA, everything seems to be allright, but after download from SD to MDA I get Download OK,but Checksum is not correct.
I also tried to test my 4 SD cards in the "bootloader SD card test" and everytime it says TEST ERROR. This is why I think my SD card slot is bad :-(.
I am really desperat and do not know what to do :-(.......
Any help appreciated
I think that only way for me is to load the ROM to the MDA through USB, but not the ActiveSync way. I read somewhere, that it is possible with "bin" file by mtty.exe program, but I cannot find any bin ROM.
RE
HI
hard reset your device by taping and handling the top off button and reseting, the bootloader will invite you to wait. do so, wait untill you'll see the message '' gsm error'' then tap the sound button on your left, put the device back on the craddle.
Do this if you had already enabled the usb for dos in the bios of your computer.
this shall work

Downgrading from 4.00.10 TMO to 3.17.xx - please help!

Hello all, first post here.
I upgraded my T-Mobile to 4.00.10 'internal test only' Tmobile rom.
I am getting a replacement phone from TMobile and I need to send this one back (Has a bad screen, warranty replacement).
Problem is, the one I am returning has the 4.00.10 ROM loaded... Do you think that the T-Mobile folks will care? I dont want to 'get in trouble'...
or charged for the replacement...
So, here is the question... Should I try to downgrade the ROM and the Radio Stack to its original before I return it?
How will I do that, I haven't seen anyone that has dont this yet, in a consistent way.
Also, is the Radio Stack upgrade included in the NK.NBF file in the RUUxx.exe from T-Mobile?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
J
You should definitely put the phone back into the "saleable" condition in which you purchased it. Get an extra sd card, a card reader, or the new xdatools posted here and flash the ROM back to the original Tmobile ROM you bought it with. If you didn't back up your ROM prior to flashing, which unfortunately is typical, you can download it here somewhere, flash it, and no one should be the wiser. By the way, why are you returning it?
I am returning the phone because the screen is messed up... It seem that the protective cover has separated from the 'screen', it is loose, so when you use your stylus, you have to really press down hard before it registers... also, it is extremely inaccurate when using the stylus even after numerous re-alignments.
Is there any way to reflash using SD Card if you dont have an SDCard reader? Can I copy the required files via ActiveSync to the SDCard while it is in the phone, then do a reset to bootloader to reflash via SDCArd?
If so, what files are needed on the sd card?
Another question along the same line... is there a special format for the files used to re-flash rom from the SD card (i.e. directory structure, file is a specific memory space, etc.) that is required when flashing using the BootLoader method?
I think that I can get an SD Card reader, but I am not sure yet...
Also, do you think that I can leave the Radio Stack at 6.24 instead of the orig 6.18?
Thanks, all.
J

PLEASE HELP Failed ROM update - Gives me blank screen

During the flashing process my Qtek complete gone, no ROM available I just get blank screen, my question is, could I use other Qtek to back-up ROM to the SD card or hard disk (with new program), after then I can use this back-up to restore my ROM? Or What I can I do to restore the Qtek to a factory default state?
Thanks
im sure u can, atleast I did on my t-mobile ppc.
if u cant write to SD card... take the card to a dealer or
show room display, insert the card, boot to bootloader (reset +push on)
and write urself a boot image on your SD card...
i know it worked for me !
What ROM you are talking about CE or GSM ?
hello
please find some information about Flashing your Qtek ROM using the 'SD Card' or 'Bootloader' Method
http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1717
i hope this could help to recover your device back to normal but if it was GSM or Radio upgrade there's another method you can use the search tool here to get it and how to fix it
best regards and good luck

2003se upgrade for a dummy

So, ive read post after post on performing this task and it is still beyond my capabilities. My wallaby is running ppc2002, rom version is 3.20.06, radio version 4.21.01 protocol version 32s54. It's running bootloader 6.22, i havent got active sync, xdatools wont run due to missing dll's or some such thing. Have a 1gig sd and a 512mb mmc,,,,
How can i upgrade with this setup? visited rom kitchen (awesome site) and cooked up a rom, extracted NK.nbf,
Need help! Surely i can upgrade with this equipment,
http://www.romkitchen.de/ make an exe then

Right, well got active sync which meens the dll's i needed are in system 32 or whatever. But,,, Does bootloader 6.22 cause problems?? Thanks for all the help,, sure this fone is a bit old but who cares. Massive screen, runs office, windows media, touch screen, great fone
Any suggestions? I cant be the only one without a data cable or cradle. At the end of the day i want the fone to run best as possible. I am thinking there is alot more compatable software for wm2003 then ppc2002? @ the moment im running mame and pacman,,,,,,,, Speaking of software, is the media player in 2002 meant to be slow? As far as video go's ive given up there.
what is your problem?
Problem is i dont seem to be able to downgrade from bootloader 6.22 to 5.15 so i can update the rom to 2003. doing ll this without a data cable or cradle.
Bootloader should not cause any problems.
Missing Dll´s for XDATools came as you have ssen correctly form ActiveSync. So you need to install this programm on your PC to use XDATools. Afterwards you will be able to wirte the ROM on your SD-Card and then flash the new ROM on your device.
So if you don´t have any cradle or cable, and don´t sync with ActiveSync, how did you manage your conacts, install software, exchange files, ....?
Stefan
I see the confusion
I have card reader's on the front panel of my pc. So i am using xardit to transfer the bootloader images onto either an sd or an MMC card. So i transfer the patch with the NB2 extension on to the card. Cold reboot xda and it gets to the normal screen telling me i need the keycard.
I can use either xdarit or isoimagetool to transfer the .NB1 file on to an SD.
I have no data cable, so these are the only methods i can use. Just pc with multi card card, sd car, mmc card.
LumpiStefan, the rom kitchen is a damn fine peice of work!
when i had a wallaby i only ever flashed it using a sdcard reader
was pretty easy used ositool put the nbf / nb1 on the sdcard
after which the cardreader could no longer read the sdcard(that mean it's successfully planted)
then i put in the sdcard and entered the bootloader and it autostart upgrading
and when it's don i hardreset and thats it
Hi And thanks
I have tried this with a 1g toshiba sd and a 512 sandisk mmc, neither seem to auto start an update. I have browsed the web a bit and have found different theories on bootloader being a problem. My card reader is a panel on the front of my pc, or using my ngage. tried formatting fat16 or fat32. Im sure it's currently ppc2002 as this is the first screen after the o2 water screen
I think your problems come from your card reader. Many people have reported, that the internal card reader causes problems in writing the ROMs in correct way on the cards. I would s uggest to use an external card reader/writer.....
Stefan
and those are only 10£$€'ish
Thanks guys for your help, all up and running now. I appreciate the advise. Rudegar, my problem was getting the wrong info from elsewhere, the solution was the card reader, Cost me $9.00 au to buy one. I thank you both
