No, it does not need a driver. You can create a modem using add modem utility in control panel, and when asked for port, select "virtual infrared port". If you want to connect to the gprs, you will need extra string in "Advanced" Option in modem onnection settings. Usually it is goes like this:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn"
Dial up number is *99#, for most ISPs.
One tip. Start the WM application, select IRDA, and tap start. Wait for the laptop to detect the IR device and click connect on the dialup connection.

Use XDA II as a modem for laptop

Hi!
Has someone a solution / configuration for to get windows working with xda2 as a modem?
i'm pretty sure it works as a bluetooth modem without any software
Using XDA as a modem to your PC
VIA BLUETOOTH CONNECTION & GPRS:
If your PC does not have an integrated Bluetooth connection, you must first install a Bluetooth dongle (USB to Bluetooth) on your PC, with the related software (widcomm or other)
Open on your PC in the Control Panel the Phone and Modem Options
Choose Modems, pick the Bluetooth Modem, then click on Properties
Click on Advanced tab
Type in Extra Initialization commands:
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Now click on the Bluetooth icon of XDA, and choose Discoverable mode
On your PC:
Click on Bluetooth icon (My Bluetooth places)
Click Bluetooth Setup Wizard.
Choose I want to find a specific Bluetooth device …
After a search period, an icon of your XDA is displayed (usually with your owner’s name): double click for settings
From the Dial-up Networking Links, click on SSA
SSA settings:
Modem: Bluetooth Modem
Number to dial: *99#
User name and password, according to Network provider
Yes it works. Im using my cradle/usb connection though and not bluetooth. I am browsing the net for free and using msn for free!! what I dont get is that why, as im using o2s settings, can i access msn via my laptop using my gprs modem, yet i cant access msn using my xda2. I know they both using the same ports! 8080...bloody weird? Or is there something else which affects the connection to net via laptop than there is connecting to gprs via xda2 connection inbuilt. Any ideas?
Drivers needed
Could please anyone post the drivers to use the HTC Himalaya as a gprs modem on my notebook.
I've lost the T-Mobile CD.
QTEK m100/i mate jam
I have been trying without success for two whole evenings to make this htc device act as a wireless usb modem for my sony viao laptop. I downloaded the USB modem dialler utility that is referred to in the sites, and when I physically connect with the USB cable and turn on the wmodem utility on the qtek then it will connect through GPRS and that is a workable if wirebound solution. However, if I disconnect and close the dieler utility, (which doesnt install, it just exe's everytime you open it) I have to fully reboot the laptop before it will connect again.
Using windows to detect the bluetooth modem results in it spotting 3 bluetooth modems, only one of which is available to "query". Using the Vodafone connect (PC) software, (which works with my old sony ericsson t610), with the newly installed bluetooth modem results in an"AT command not supported" failure message. It does this with or without the GCDCONDetc initialisation string in the modem's advanced settings.
Has anyone got a simple HTC bluetooth modem driver or any better ideas? This is driving me bananas.
Thanks

Bluetooth / GPRS / Laptop / MDAII

And another question about bluetooth modem/gprs/laptop...
Even though I've read all (I guess) questions and answers here.
I want to browse over the internet using my MDAII as a bluetooth modem.
- My provider is T-mobile in the Netherlands
- MDA bluetooth is in discoverable mode
- On my Windows XP pro laptop I have paired my MDA
- I've got a bluetooth modem configured in Control panel with the string AT+CDGCONT=1,"IP","internet",0,0
- Number to dial is *99#
When I doubleclick the DUN I get a messagebox which tells me to pick up the handset, dail *99# and click OK. When I do that nothing happens and the connection is disconnected.
I tried to give in the phonenumber in a terminal window (ATD*99#), then I see CONNECT and the usual garbage, but when I close the window it is still disconnected.
A "query modem" in the modem configuration is succesfull. My laptop is able to communicate with the modem, but that is all.
What do I do wrong?
I've tried using an USB modem, but that gives the same result.
if you are using pocketplus or another program which close applications insted of minimizing them when you press the X
then i guess closing the connection windows would close the connection
Thanks for your reply.
I'm just using Wmodem on my MDA and a DUN connection on the laptop. Everything as simple as possible. The terminal window is an option from the DUN connection.

XDA as a GPRS Modem via Bluetooth

Can anyone help me to connnect my laptop running XP via bluetooth with my XDA II such that I can connect to the Internet via GPRS.
Thanks
yes o2 can
http://www.my-xda.com/xda2_spec.html
down in the buttom part of the page there is a step by step pdf file
Thanks for the pointer, perhaps I'm being a little dense but I wondered it there was a specific guide as to how to link via bluetooth and use the GPRS access of the XDA. - Thanks
this guide is for smartphones but guess you do it much the same way for pocketpc's
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=2642
...
I've described that already here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30962
This is the copy...
It is not so clear about the APN,but this will connect via your default internet connection, that you're using on the go(The APN is described there):
1.Pair your Himalaya with a PC.
2.Start the Wireless Modem app.and choose Bluetooth. Then tap to Start button. Your device must be in Discoverable mode!
3.Now in computer click to the 'My Bluetooth Places' icon on the desktop.
4.Open the connected Himalaya and click to the SSA service.
5.Now the connection window will appeared. Choose the *99# as a dialed number and click to Dial.
That's it.

Wirless modem dont works

what can i do?
thx
SAme here. It's a known issue
Im thinking to try:
Mobile stream USB Modem for PPC.
Somebody have test it?
IM getting the same thing now. If this is a known issue, and this was like 3 months ago is there any more news on this? Its becoming a right old pain in the backside for me right now!
I have two hermes, both with the same problem. I connect using dial up (bluetooth) but 300 kbps instead of 800
I can connect just fine over IrDA when using GPRS. I don't have bluetooth on my laptop, but I guess the transfer rate over bluetooth is to slow for a fullspeed connection. I can't test that either: I have the low-budget option Pocket Internet Total from T-mobile which is downgraded to 64kbps over UMTS.
For using fullspeed UMTS (3G) even HSDPA, I would recommend using the USB connection.
Two things that can make trouble:
a) I found was that when using the USB cable, I had to disable the automatic connection some programs try to make (such as direct push)
b) I used COM8 for my bluetooth gps: after setting the gps to com0, I could connect without any problem
I read in some thread that you had to disable the advance network features over USB but as far as I can tell that only limits the speed over usb (my guess: USB 1.0 (1.1) in stead of 2.0)
I have a tytn and it works great, I get 3g speeds between 900 and 1300.
1) Plug the usb cable into your pc
2) Make sure you have activesync USB connection disabled
3) Disconnect your gprs or 3g connection (this is real important)
4) Activate the wireless modem app, start connection
5) make sure your gprs/3g connection is inactive
6) plug your pda into the usb cable
7) pc recognizes the wireless modem
8) install driver
9) Create dial up to *99# or whatever your carrier uses
10) Again make sure your gprs/3g connection is inactive
11) dial using your dialup shortcut
after the first time, all you have to do in make sure your gprs/3g connection is disconnected, start the wireless modem app, plug into your usb cable, dial the *99# using your wirelss modem dialup shortcut
I have it working on both Windows Xp and Windows Vista...It is a great backup to my local internet connection and it is very easy to use
Pardon me if there is a difference, but on my Hermes to use its internal data connection as the bearer you have to use *99# (NOT #99*) as the number to dial when configuring the dial-up connection in Dial-Up Connections.
When I tried it (several times) on my XP laptop, it was almost childishly simple: regardless of whether the phone was already plugged in via USB or not, just load the wireless modem app, set the APN to general.t-mobile.uk, hit Start and bam: I wait for it to initialise (the lights in the application window light up to show connection and data, and once those show up just hit dial. No username, no password, Robert's your mother's brother. Worked every time I tried it.
Using a T-Mobile UK-branded Hermes fwiw.

Why not read the Hermes wiki for some very usefull information:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
The hermes wiki Faq http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_FAQs would have pointed you to a link to download the htc wireless modem driver:
http://www.box.net/public/jytpxq47nk
or search google for HTC Wireless Modem download
and you would have found instructions at
http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=1656&catid=80
Good Luck....

there are some texts showing "programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using"
and a dropdownbox
select the dropdownbox item which is not called something like "my isp"
but pick the one thats called something like "my network"
then all programs trying to access the internet will be forced to use activesync as internet connection and if activesync is not connected they will fail!
if i am reading your post right you are trying to use ur ppc as a modem to connect to the internet?
If so, use these steps:
connect ppc to PC thru usb, let activesync do it's work
on PPC go to Start>Programs>Accessories and open the Internet Sharing program
After this is done, it should allow you top connect to the internet by using the PPC as a modem. It's a slow connection, but it works

add vpn connection
setup my proxy
i use bluetooth mind you if you use usb you have to
check Enable advanced network functionality
in usb to pc though
and your pc activesync should be set to not block it
and your firewall should alow it
usually you don't need to change anything in settings to get internet with usb, try hard reset your ppc and reconnect. Also, IP in your pc shouldn't be specified (keep it automatic)
