XDA as a GPRS Modem via Bluetooth - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Can anyone help me to connnect my laptop running XP via bluetooth with my XDA II such that I can connect to the Internet via GPRS.
Thanks

yes o2 can
http://www.my-xda.com/xda2_spec.html
down in the buttom part of the page there is a step by step pdf file

Thanks for the pointer, perhaps I'm being a little dense but I wondered it there was a specific guide as to how to link via bluetooth and use the GPRS access of the XDA. - Thanks

this guide is for smartphones but guess you do it much the same way for pocketpc's

I've described that already here:

This is the copy...
It is not so clear about the APN,but this will connect via your default internet connection, that you're using on the go(The APN is described there):
1.Pair your Himalaya with a PC.
2.Start the Wireless Modem app.and choose Bluetooth. Then tap to Start button. Your device must be in Discoverable mode!
3.Now in computer click to the 'My Bluetooth Places' icon on the desktop.
4.Open the connected Himalaya and click to the SSA service.
5.Now the connection window will appeared. Choose the *99# as a dialed number and click to Dial.
That's it.

Use XDA II as a modem for laptop

Hi!
Has someone a solution / configuration for to get windows working with xda2 as a modem?
i'm pretty sure it works as a bluetooth modem without any software
Using XDA as a modem to your PC
VIA BLUETOOTH CONNECTION & GPRS:
If your PC does not have an integrated Bluetooth connection, you must first install a Bluetooth dongle (USB to Bluetooth) on your PC, with the related software (widcomm or other)
Open on your PC in the Control Panel the Phone and Modem Options
Choose Modems, pick the Bluetooth Modem, then click on Properties
Click on Advanced tab
Type in Extra Initialization commands:
AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”xxx”,””,0,0
where xxx is your internet access point.
Now click on the Bluetooth icon of XDA, and choose Discoverable mode
On your PC:
Click on Bluetooth icon (My Bluetooth places)
Click Bluetooth Setup Wizard.
Choose I want to find a specific Bluetooth device …
After a search period, an icon of your XDA is displayed (usually with your owner’s name): double click for settings
From the Dial-up Networking Links, click on SSA
SSA settings:
Modem: Bluetooth Modem
Number to dial: *99#
User name and password, according to Network provider
Yes it works. Im using my cradle/usb connection though and not bluetooth. I am browsing the net for free and using msn for free!! what I dont get is that why, as im using o2s settings, can i access msn via my laptop using my gprs modem, yet i cant access msn using my xda2. I know they both using the same ports! 8080...bloody weird? Or is there something else which affects the connection to net via laptop than there is connecting to gprs via xda2 connection inbuilt. Any ideas?
Drivers needed
Could please anyone post the drivers to use the HTC Himalaya as a gprs modem on my notebook.
I've lost the T-Mobile CD.
QTEK m100/i mate jam
I have been trying without success for two whole evenings to make this htc device act as a wireless usb modem for my sony viao laptop. I downloaded the USB modem dialler utility that is referred to in the sites, and when I physically connect with the USB cable and turn on the wmodem utility on the qtek then it will connect through GPRS and that is a workable if wirebound solution. However, if I disconnect and close the dieler utility, (which doesnt install, it just exe's everytime you open it) I have to fully reboot the laptop before it will connect again.
Using windows to detect the bluetooth modem results in it spotting 3 bluetooth modems, only one of which is available to "query". Using the Vodafone connect (PC) software, (which works with my old sony ericsson t610), with the newly installed bluetooth modem results in an"AT command not supported" failure message. It does this with or without the GCDCONDetc initialisation string in the modem's advanced settings.
Has anyone got a simple HTC bluetooth modem driver or any better ideas? This is driving me bananas.
Thanks

Laptop GPRS via BT on PDA

I have scoured the forums and the nice BT how-to's at geekzone web site but still can not get this connection set up. I want internet access on my laptop (W2000Pro) via BT connection to PDA (PDA2k) using GPRS on PDA. Maybe I just am using the wrong number to dial. I thought it is *99# for AT&T W here in the US. Detailed instruction on PC and PDA end will be much appreciated.
Have you put the modem string in?
On the laptop go to Control Pane > Phone and Modems > Modems
Highlight the XDA connection and click Properties > Advanced tab
In the 'Extra Initialization commands' field enter
at+cgdcont=1,"ip","Service provider"
for service provider it could be AT&T.com; you will have to find that out!

There are a few factors to consider when attempting to use a PDA as a GPRS modem, as follows:
1) PDA devices, throughout several years of my testing/engineering experience in the wireless data industry do not make good GPRS modems (In fact, most of them do not function as modems - as it was originally intended by the manufacturer)
2) The Win2k Pro has to be at least Service Pack3 for decent GPRS connectivity (I am going to assume that it is either SP3 or SP4 on your box)
3) Under control panel > phone/modem options (as mentioned by the person below) you need to click on the "modems" tab, then highlight your PDA modem and click the "Properties" tab....Here you will click the "Advanced" tab, AND in the "extra initialization command" bar you will enter the following string (case-sensitive) at+cgdcont=1,"IP","proxy" ....don't leave spaces in the string...then click OK and OK again (or apply and OK, whatever the option is)
4) Most importantly, you need to make sure that your SIM card from ATTWS/Cingular is accurately provisioned for the GPRS PDP option. (If it's not yet, you will need to call the ATT Wireless Customer Care/or Cingular Customer Care -whatever it is called right now)
5) You will then go into the Control Panel > Network/Dialup Connections and "create a new" manual DUN connection using that PDA modem driver (not your internal modem driver obviously - you would be amazed how many ppl make that mistake)...You will want to dial *99# ....You don't want to use ANY area code or dialing rules, and you want use both a blank username and a blank password (make sure "save password" is checked)
In conclusion....Provided that all of the aforementioned components are in place, you should be able to connect and browse/get mail, whatever your needs are.....depending on the capabilities of your PDA modem, you will get anywhere from 28kbps to 70 kbps for your data throughput.
Enjoy,
Sincerely,
Your local neighborhood friendly GPRS expert
PS. I just realized that you are using BT as your connection means (which implies you have to use Bluetooth Neighborhood, Bluetooth Places, or Bluetooth Devices, one of the above anyway........Therefore, just apply the settings I gave you to the Bluetooth DUN setup (instead of the Windows DUN setup)...You should see your PDA modem as a "bluetooth Dialup modem" on com6 or something of that nature.....
Cheers 8)
Finally got it - was easy in the end
A correction... I am using XP SP2 not 2000 (duh). Anyway I got the connection working and it all seems very easy in retrospect.
For anyone else having this problem: You just need to find the services offered by your pda2k through your "BT Places" on the laptop. Dial up networking will be offered, choose that and a shortcut will be created automatically in BT Places. All else was automatic, just dbl click Dial-up Networking. You will see a dialog on pda2k explaining the connection, you get a phone icon in banner area and then use the internet on your laptop just like normal. In case it does not happen automatically you just need to make sure you have a BT modem in Control Panel/Modems on a COM port and a BT connection using that modem with number *99#, no other options or settings required.
Glad you figured this out!
I was going to suggest using the Widcomm drivers found on this forum. I switched and was able to get a DUN service.
On another note if you are using the MS BT drivers, I found that if you establish an Activesync connection via BT, you can setup the outgoing serial port as the BT modem.

Internet Sharing via Bluetooth

What I want to do is browse the internet on my 8525 using the internet from my laptop, internet sharing but from my laptop to my device and using bluetooth...
Ive already look at more than 50 topics in this forum, cingular forums and over the internet and nothing, I get tutorials to use the 8525 as a modem, to share the internet from the device to the computer but not from the computer to the device.
Ill appreciate any help... thanks.

depends on what you have. if you have wm6 you can do this by using the internet sharing utility on your 8525. pair your device with your computer first. then go to internet sharing and under pc connection scroll down to bluetooth PAN, select the correct connection you use and then click connect on the bottom. that should do it.
I have WM5...

not really familiar with that process in wm5.
I have that 'internet sharing' utility but that does nothing; it says "connect" but when I try to open a website it does nothing or it attempts to connect thru the GPRS using any of the three settings under Network Connections (Cingular GPRS, Media Net, My ISP GPRS); and I don't hava any data plan or media net...

oh thats easy... you have to initiate the connection first. go to the mobile browser and just go to google.com or something so it can call up the gprs/edge/3g connection. when it connects then you can do the internet sharing utility thing. the phone has to be connected to the mobile internet before you can share the connection.
You have to set internet sharing to Bluetooth pan like it says here and click on connect
http://www.wireless.att.com/support...alsCategory=Bluetooth+Set+Up&tutorialId=98500
After that it depends on what bluetooth stack you are using on your pc.
If you are using the MS Bluetooth stack you have to right click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray and click on "join personal network area" If you already have the phone paired up you click on the phone, then click on connect.
If you are using a widcomm stack, open up My Bluetooth places, click on view devices in range. Right click on the phone and click on "Connect Network Access point"
The Toshiba stack is a big pain in the butt. You have to set up a partnership in custom mode. and select Bluetooth pan as the default service. Once paired up the process is just like the widcomm stack
When I go to "Internet Sharing" and hit connect it says "Device setup finished. ON the PC, connect Bluetooth PAN"
Now when I go to the PC and click on "Connect Network Access Point" (im using widcomm) it says "The network Access connection failed - error 0x81000015"
I got mine to work with Black Majic but there's frequent disconnects. i cannot seem to hold a connection for more than 5 minutes at a time. but USB sharing works for at least an hour at a time... sigh
you must have a data plan

hi my man. if you don't have a data plan the internet sharing won't work at all if you have t-mobile and willing to pay for the service. try changing your phone on t-mobile website for a blackberry .then add the blackberry internet . is cheaper and same thing as the total internet service
Can this be done via "Dial Up Networking", I read a tutorial somewhere but there was some steps that I wasnt able to pull off; I did create a new connection by going to Start >> Settings >> Connections >> Connections >> Add a new modem connection >> where it says "Enter a name for the connection" I put My connection >> where it says "Select a modem" I select "Bluetooth" and hit next, then I select the name of my computer (ex; Acer-284ru9) because it was already pair with the device, then I hit next again and it asked me for a phone number to and I enter *99# (because thats the phone number I saw at the previous tutorial), then it ask me for:
username: anything
password: anything
Domain*: blank
and enter finish; then I went to Start >> Programs >> Internet Sharing >> select:
PC Connection > Bluetooth Pan
Network Connection > My connection
hit "Connect" and it starts connecting, and on the computer it says "Bluetooth Device MyPocketPC is connected to the "Dial-Up Networking" service on this computer" but it keeps attempting to connect on the device and it does for about 2 seconds, then drops.
I dunno, maybe there's something missing, Ill appreciate any help, been hitting my face with this for the last couple of days.
Please guys DO read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282780 - it explains everything.

It worked...i can connect to internet via bluetooth dongle (bluesoleil)...horray...
I hope i can emulate the same to my office windows 98 ...

Bluetooth Null Modem ?

I want to connect to the Internet via a Bluettoth Access Point (Billionton) providing PAN and LAP, or via my Laptop's Bluetooth Network adapter using Internet Connect Sharing.
On the HD, I cannot find the BT NULL Modem option in the Modems list (all I have there are: Bluetooth along with 2 Cellular options and Hayas modem).
Is there a way to have that option?
On my previous PDA, I had installed the Widcomm stack, there I had that option.
Pleae assist
Thaanks
anyone familiarr with that?
Please, Anyone?
As posted above, Can anyone connect to the WEB via a PC using the Bluetooth Network Adapter (with internet connect sharing) ,using the PAN or LAP BT profiles, not just Activesync.
It seems that a BT Null Modem is required to be present on the HTC HD, but I cannot configure that with the current BT stack.
Please assist
Thanks
Yes, it's possible.
Do the following:
1. Enable BT on your device. (make sure it's in visible mode as well)
2. On your PC turn on your internal BT or insert USB BT module.
NOTE: If you are using XP SP2/SP3 I suggest not to use Window's built-in BT stack, as your PC will fail to install BT modem drivers after pairing. Use Widcomm drivers instead. They worked for me In case you're using Vista, there's no need for 3rd party driver installation, as the Vista built-in BT stack will recognize and install BT modem drivers just fine.
3. On your PC, initiate BT device pairing (once again, make sure your device's BT is visible!). Once pairing is done, and BT passwords are exchanged, your PC should discover the available BT services your device can offer. Select at least BT dial-up networking and BT PAN networking. If you are using Widcomm drivers, it will automatically create shortcuts for you for every selected connection.
That's all for the configuration. If you want to use your device as a BT modem for dial-up networking, just click on the dial-up icon Widcomm wizard created for you and enter *99# as a dialing number. Usually there's no need for username/password configuarion when accessing 3G/EDGE. Should your connection fail, then you must add some "extra modem initialization commands" to your BT modem settings in device manager as follows: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","<APN name>" where APN name stands for 3G/EDGE access point your operator gave you. As an example for ATT USA it would be: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"
In case you decide to connect to the Internet using BT PAN network, there's an extra step needed:
4. On your device, go to Programs->Internet Sharing. In "PC Connection" drop-down box select "Bluetooth PAN" and for "Network Connection" choose you default access point your operator provided.
5. Again make sure your device BT is ON and is in visible mode (ICS will warn you about this anyway). On your PC launch and establish BT PAN connection by using the shortcut the Widcomm has created for you.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
S.
Thanks for the quick response. Still, I may miss something.
As I had mentioned I want to access the internet from my HD via a PC (thus avoiding the cost for GPRS/HSDPA).
1. When you refer to the PAN on the PC side are you refering to the 'Network Access Point'? (I have the Broadcom stack on my PC)
2. When I click on the Network Access icon (on my PC), its starts to connect but immediately it comes up with an error message sayig 'could not connect to remote device'
3. Does the Internet Connect Sharing (ICS) on the HD, facilitate the HD to access the internet via the PC?
4. I used the following configuration for the ICS on the HD:
PC Connection: Bluetooth PAN
Network Connection: <my mobile provider> Internet
5. Do I have to configure something on the BT PAN Network Adapter on my HD (setting>wifi>wireless networks>network adapters)
5. As I understand from your response, when activating the ICS, for this type of connection, the BT PAN actually take over the traffic detined to be carried out via the HSDPA Internet, is it correct?
Thanks again
this would interest me as well

Need Help - How to connect to the internet via Bluetooth PAN?

If anybody had managed to access the internet via Bluetooth PAN (via a PC ora BT accees point), then please provide explanation how to configure both: a PC with Boradcom stack and the HTC HD (which connection to use, how to use the Internet Connect Sharing on the HD, which IP addresses should be entered for the PAN network card etc.)
Your help is really needed
Thanks
I am sure this was answered the other day, do a search within the Blackstone forums.
Found it :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470206
Yes, you are right. The opther thread title was about NULL MODEM, and could have been not clear. Due to the lack of help there, I did post this new thread with a more accurate title.
The problem remains the same. I still cannot access the internet via PAN. I can use BT ActiveSync to access the Internet , but this is not the right way.
Please, anyone who had succeeded, do post the steps to achieve BT via PAN
Thanks
Thats a really basic question. (your really did not find a answer on this forum?).
On ppc goto Programs/internetconnection/ and under connection choose bluetooth instead of usb. Than click connect.
On PC right click on bluetooth icon, chooce quickconnect to Network accesspoint.
Thats it. Of course you firs must pair device and set it to be"visible".
Thanks
I allready did that, I chose 'Network Access', under the Quick Connect, my PPC was detected, when I click on 'Connect' I get the message "Error creating 'Network Access Point' connection with device ,my device>" on my PC. This happens when I choose Serilal Port or Dial Up Networking too.
What am I missing?
Thanks
S u c c e s s
Thanks to you all foryour support.
The problem was with the BT stcak on my computer. I unistalled the Widcomm BT application and reinstalled it again. Suddenly, no more error messages. All is working ok.
Even I wanted to connect to my LAN internet connection on desktop over Bluetooth.
1. I have enabled BT on HD - Visible mode (No Bluetooth icon on Taskbar -- Why???.
2. Paired with Desktop - passkey exchange - Success.
3. Service Discovery - Two services found on THD:
a) Bluetooth PAN.
b) Bluetooth Dial-up networking.
(Please note - Object Push Service and FTP services are not there!!)
Anyway - Now if I try to Click Connect to the PAN:
"Establishing a Connection with ABX's Bluetooth PAN
..
Operation - Not successful. Please try it again..
I have soft reset HD and also reinstalled Bluesoleil on desktop several times.
Nothing seems to help.
As a side note
1.Even sending an object from Desktop is not possible as the Object Push Service is not visible..
2.Sending a text from a cellphone also fails - "Bluetooth Connection Failed"
I have "Obex inbox" installed if that information helps.. But the problem is there even before installing any app.
Is it that I got a stone instead of a "BlackStone" ??
Any help greatly appreciated.
Edit: Connecting Activesync over bluetooth worked. still unable over either ActiveSync-USB OR to do BT without Activesync
Any Ideas??
