using 3 on a XDA ( 3G) - Networking

Hi
I d like to know if it is possible to use a 3 simcard ( 3G in england) with an XDA? And I also like to know if you can use the fast connection ( 384 kps/sec to browse the web ans stay online all the time  ( the motorola has bluetooth)
thx a lot ( it is my first post here and i can tell you that this is a great community with great people )

I have no idea about whether or not you can use the SIM, but you will most certainly not get the 3G speed. For that you'd need a 3G phone that uses the 3G network. the XDA is a mere dual-band GSM/GPRS device.

i m sorry i got confuse when i wrote this
I m meant if I use a 3G phone for 3 that has bluetooth capacities , can i use a pocket pc ( linked ) to surf at 384 or no ?*
thx

Not a clue.. Try it out...

I doubt u can as I think 3 don't allow data access except to their own information yet...

Universal with HSDPA?

Thinking on getting an MDA pro with T-Mobile in the UK with the walk n web unlimited internet, only catch is that it is UMTS. With the news that T-Mobile are upgrading the network to HSDPA wondering if there is a HSDPA universal due to be released anytime soon? If not, the other option is to wait for the Hermes in June.
The UMTS Notebook Cards can be upgrade to HSDPA with a new firmware, but i think the Universal haven't the necesary hardware for that. Wait for the Hermes...
Forgive the ignorance but what exactly is HSDPA?

Thanks lutzs, only prob I have with the hermes is the small screen 320x240.. the small screen is big minus Im not looking to use it as a phone, but more for PDA and internet access... also plan to use it as a gateway (over bluetooth) for my mac to get to the net... thought about the pcmcia card, but need to lug laptop everywhere for that, whereas the pda itself is much more portable...
i think the tradeoff of speed over the usablility (screen, keyboard etc) might just be worth it for my needs...
another question, has anyone used t-mobile uk's web n walk with the above scenario of using it as a bridge for internet access for a laptop? the small print says that you can't do that blah blah... but don't see how that can tell if you're browsing through the pda or your computer? http is http...?
haven't used tmobile, but the universal can be used as a modem. Via bluetooth should be fine (*99# etc.)
HSDPA is not part of the universal chipset. however I wouldn't get too excited. Mobile cells have to share bandwidth so the chance of anything fast is unlikely. Put it this way, by the time we actually get 384k sustained on any 3G network, that should be fine for web & email & online games.
I had an o2 xda mini s. but i gave it back. 320x240 is very limtied, adding that to the dismal 196 mhz omap was not usable.

Skype on mini!

Hello people,
Have anyone used Skype on mini? Mini doesn't have 3G and skype requires it i think. Have you tried? Which version did you download from?
Regards
Carty..
Skype does not require 3g. It works with wifi or BT. I don't have a wifi card but I've already played around with BT and is quitke good.
Hi,
Fine, let me try with gprs. Which version of skype is compatible with mini, can you please give me the link.
Thanx in advance.
Regards
Carty..
Skype
I tryed skipe with gprs and it works quite good! the quality is not the best but i cud understand my skipe contact... skype out was also quite good
Which version did you use? i couldn't find a version specific for mini. Only other devices like Dell, imate were there.
Thanx.
Regards
Carty..
I only tried it with their beta version. I uninstalled it because I don't have and don't want to buy a wifi card since soon I'll be replacing my S100.
i used the version for high speed cpus! you can download it from here:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/download.html
I only tested it with gprs
Thanx you guys!

Sorry to say that but that's bull****. Skype runs well via WiFi or 3G. GPRS only offers 56kbps, that is by far not enough bandiwth for voice. You can chat via GPRS, but no voice.

That's true. Even If U'll switch to 4downling and 1 uplink U can barelly undestand your partner and with 1 uplink he will understand nothing. For skype U need at last 5 kB uplink and 5 kB downling - its impossible to get with GPRS.
You guys might need to get updated! Skype works well with my poor gprs connection even for voice! My gprs gives a transfer rate of an average 3kbps. The quality of the voice is like telephone clearity! I just used it for skype-out, a call to a land line number!

@Carty: That's absolute bull****.
It doesn't even work smooth with bluetooth ~30kb/s.

Get real! Magician offers 2 GPRS modes: 3-2 and 4-1 (where 4-1 means that 4 of 5 slots avaiable are used for download and 1 slot for upload. For skype U need 5 kB uplink and 5 kB downlink and there's no way to get it with 4-1 where U have max 4kB downlink (u should barelly undestand UR partner) and 1kB (sic!) uplink (theres no way that U will be understood). 3kB down and 2kB up in 3-2 GPRS mode is pretty useless too...
Point is that Skype need much more bandwidth than standard VoIP software so U can try one of many other VoiP communicators and U may be succesfull.
^ Um, that isn't the correct way to gague your GPRS ability - 1 slot != 1kB. If you're getting only like 3-5kB, it's because of reception or operator restrictions, NOT slot limit:

htc touch HD as modem for htc shift

hi everybody
I have an HTC shift with windows 7 on it and an htc touch hd with connection to the internet.
I want to use my touch HD to connect my shift to the internet by using it as a modem but I can't connect it to activeSync ( vista version), the synchronisation do not start even if I try to do it manually. I had the same problem on Vista. Does anyone knows how to solve this problem? thanks a lot
what for ???
just for the modem ???
uhmm.... I know that htc shift already have modem on it, why using another modem ?
what for ???
you need the touch HD just for the modem ?
uhmm.... I know that htc shift has modem on it, so why need another modem ?
Well because otherwise he would have to get two data plans. Man how on Earth can someone ask such an obvious question?
yes you are right, I always have to release the SIM card from my phone and then put it in the shift and then redoing the same thing when I am done with it . it is possible to turn my phone into a wifi router and connect the shift to net using the wifi but the battery will last less longer even if i have a mugen battery . so if anyone has a solution ?

i use a cloned (twin sim) phone sim with unlimited GB net access ...
i use the same number on my shift and on my W810i sony ericcson...
when you want to use your shifts card just deactivate your touch HD and activate shifts modem ...
thanks for your answer, but here in france you have to pay 10 dollars per month to get a twin SIM :s. so it would be better is the solution is free
convert hd touch as wifi router using software
convert hd touch as wifi router using software. lot of such software exists..google is your search friend ;-)..some are free some are one time paurchase required.
here is one free on xda
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=341398
then use shift wifi to c9nnect and use your data connection .
hope this solves the problem and avoids wires etc, plus you can share the connection on yor laptop or with friends if required.
I guess I will use the wifi solution if there is no other solutions, thanks for the link .

HD2 HSDPA/WiFi speedtest slow

My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.

Please don't create multiple threads. You've already created a thread about Temple Run not working, so why not just post it there?
As long as you're getting H you should be OK. I barely ever get 3G either, I'm normally on H. From my understanding, this is effectively 3.5G.
sorry I figured they were two different topics therefore 2 different thread.

Mine shows 3G but the second i start using data and see the little arrow things it switches to H. H being HSDPA which yes is like 3.5G Now i do wanna know what the difference between G and E is... i would like to comment on G i get ~300 kbps and on E i get like 100kbps. So its faster but i guess my question is what determines it to use G over E and vice versa. At first i thought it was signal strength but according to spare parts the signal strength (dB value) is the same on both.

Your network strength determines it. If the phone gets low signal on HSPDA then it will try to switch to EGPRS, and if it can't get a good signal on that then it will go to GPRS.

Look up a few posts, ive already thought this was the deterent. But as posted a few posts ago, according to Spare parts, my single strength stays the same. Its strange. I prefer G cause its like 20 times faster then Edge xP so im trying to see if i can force it to use G instead of E since my signal strength stays the same i dont see how i couldnt.
have "H", why want "3G"?
H is 3.5G
signal changes depending on the strength, I mostly get H but it fluctuates like if you in a bus moving around different places. You can set the phone just to use G 2G signal if you wish
But for me It continues to mess up. Everytime I open the playstore data turns off and it goes on and off all of the time. Also the connectivity to simple mobile goes off and on all the time. I am really starting to regret getting simple mobile
it depends on bandwidth available in your cell, so if network doesn't have BW for you on higher type of network you contracted with (4G, 3.5) it switches to lower type (gprs which is 2.5G)
Does anybody know how simple mobile works with Porting a number over to them. I'm using "NexusHD2-ICS-CM9-HWA_V2.5.zip" ROM (by Tytung) for my HD2, and I just called simple mobile and ported my number over. They said it could take up to 24 hours, but does that mean that I can't even call out or see a network until then? Please help me if you know? Thanks.

simple mobile runs off the tmobile network...they are just resellers using/selling tmobile bandwidth. i have no issues with my data connection...why not just use your wifi...much faster than even 3g. it can even be an issue with your android build-or your phone setup. doh!.

doesn't matter who whcih carrier....you are in limbo during porting. mine took only about 12 hrs. you'll see a network but can't use your phone until your imei/phone is registered to the new network. doesn't matter what your phone os is neither. porting time depends on how quickly your old carrier disconnects you and your new carrier connects you. works the same way with any phone number.
Thanks. When I got up and checked my phone this morning, I had my number and calls worked.
