Hi I just got Simple mobile for the HTC HD2 which Im running the NEXUS HD2 ics build on and It never says 3G. It only says E, G, or H. I also have problems connecting to data sometimes.

Please don't create multiple threads. You've already created a thread about Temple Run not working, so why not just post it there?
As long as you're getting H you should be OK. I barely ever get 3G either, I'm normally on H. From my understanding, this is effectively 3.5G.
sorry I figured they were two different topics therefore 2 different thread.

Mine shows 3G but the second i start using data and see the little arrow things it switches to H. H being HSDPA which yes is like 3.5G Now i do wanna know what the difference between G and E is... i would like to comment on G i get ~300 kbps and on E i get like 100kbps. So its faster but i guess my question is what determines it to use G over E and vice versa. At first i thought it was signal strength but according to spare parts the signal strength (dB value) is the same on both.

I knew what E was, but i didnt know what G was. And GPRS sounds about right. From what ive read its a part of the 2G 3G network. Thanks for the info. But what determines if the phone uses Edge or G?

Your network strength determines it. If the phone gets low signal on HSPDA then it will try to switch to EGPRS, and if it can't get a good signal on that then it will go to GPRS.

Look up a few posts, ive already thought this was the deterent. But as posted a few posts ago, according to Spare parts, my single strength stays the same. Its strange. I prefer G cause its like 20 times faster then Edge xP so im trying to see if i can force it to use G instead of E since my signal strength stays the same i dont see how i couldnt.
have "H", why want "3G"?
H is 3.5G
signal changes depending on the strength, I mostly get H but it fluctuates like if you in a bus moving around different places. You can set the phone just to use G 2G signal if you wish
But for me It continues to mess up. Everytime I open the playstore data turns off and it goes on and off all of the time. Also the connectivity to simple mobile goes off and on all the time. I am really starting to regret getting simple mobile
it depends on bandwidth available in your cell, so if network doesn't have BW for you on higher type of network you contracted with (4G, 3.5) it switches to lower type (gprs which is 2.5G)
Does anybody know how simple mobile works with Porting a number over to them. I'm using "NexusHD2-ICS-CM9-HWA_V2.5.zip" ROM (by Tytung) for my HD2, and I just called simple mobile and ported my number over. They said it could take up to 24 hours, but does that mean that I can't even call out or see a network until then? Please help me if you know? Thanks.

simple mobile runs off the tmobile network...they are just resellers using/selling tmobile bandwidth. i have no issues with my data connection...why not just use your wifi...much faster than even 3g. it can even be an issue with your android build-or your phone setup. doh!.

doesn't matter who whcih carrier....you are in limbo during porting. mine took only about 12 hrs. you'll see a network but can't use your phone until your imei/phone is registered to the new network. doesn't matter what your phone os is neither. porting time depends on how quickly your old carrier disconnects you and your new carrier connects you. works the same way with any phone number.
Thanks. When I got up and checked my phone this morning, I had my number and calls worked.

Does anyone know what the new icons mean?
I am now getting H and R, even though in the same place I used to get a 3G connection.
H is fine I can do everything, but when I am on R I get no internet.

H is HSPDA and R is roaming i believe. HSPDA is the 7mbps speed, so its equivilant to wifi speeds assuming you have an 8+mb line.
I've only encountered those speeds once when I was at the Atlanta airport waiting for my connection to Florida.
Thats what I was thinking.
So I should assume that HSDPA is my 3G connection.
I should have thought of that roaming.
In Aus with telstra I should be hitting 7mbps no probs in the cities with Telstra. Strange about roaming though I have never needed to roam before on anyphone before this update.

If you have no data connection while roaming go into your Setting>Wireless Controls >Mobile Networks then enable Data Roaming ONLY if you dont get charged for it. In the US, T-Mobile doesn't charge for data roaming as long as you're inside the country.

Ok, then, now what's the million dollar question? CAN WE SWITCH THE H ICON TO 3G?
Where is it located?

Thanks guys but it did use both the search buttom and also manually reading through the last few pages of threads in all 4 sub forums.
So next time F** off, if you want to be like that.
itt was mentioned in the 4million page thread of haykuros previous builds. H means same as 3G in this case- HTC just use H instead of 3G. and yes sometimes the search fxn sux. maybe not a new thread for it but ask in the thread about the actual build.
to replace you need to open update with 7zip, replace the H icons with 3G icons from another build (H icons i think are in system-framework-htcresources.apk if i remember correctly- from old haykuro build- i dont have new one). make sure the 3G icons have same name as wht the H ones did. close update, resign zip and you are right to go and flash it.

Thanks for that mate, it ok I dont mind it being a H as long as I know it is running on the 3G connection.
Hummm... you can do that but you guys are forgetting something. The H build shows G (GPRS), E (EDGE), 3G (UMTS), and H (HSPDA/HSUPA) icons. You could just copy the icons from system/framework/com.htc.rescources.apk/res/drawable and replace the ones in system/framework/framework.res.apk/res/drawable but they would be inaccurate. It would display a H icon where you might actually have UMTS connection. I wish I knew what else should be replaced (probably an extra script or lib file would be also be needed to include all 4 icons from H build.
Hi! I have been browsing the Nexus One forums for a while now, but I seem to have a strange problem.
I had a Nexus One that was working fine, but there was a piece of dust under my screen. It switched to HSDPA, and I had none of the issues that I have now. I sent it to HTC, but they didn't want to repair it, because it was rooted. I think they flashed something into the phone, because ever since the internet connection is very buggy. 3G (UMTS) didn't cause any problems then, but now if I hold my hand at the bottom of the nexus, connection indicator lowers (Cell Viewer: ranging from -1 to 8). When I hold the phone up int he air the connection varies between 14 and 24 (UMTS). The phone doesn't switch to HSDPA AT ALL!
I tried the hsxpa-tweak in build.prop, but it didn't help. I am using Cyans latest stable. I have wiped, installed stock, upgraded to cyan again, and tried staying on the stock rom, to no avail.
Is there something really stupid that I am not seeing? Or would it mean that the transporter has damaged my phone antenna by dropping it? :O
What makes you believe you're not getting HSDPA? Have you tested the actual speed of your connection? Keep in mind, on an unrooted Nexus One, your signal indicator will always show 3G even when HSDPA is active. It only shows the H when you're using a custom ROM.
Also, the signal fluctuation when covering the bottom of the phone is well documented at this point. It's normal.
HSDPA is only active when the network deems you need it, it'll just sits on 3G all other times.
Funny..I'm on HSPA all the time when on 3G..never saw UMTS not one. Yet on a cliq I saw UMTS...

Also, check which Radio Firmware you have installed now. If you have 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2 installed, try downgrading to 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2.

Hmm... I've had a look at that thread, thanks for the pointer!
Too bad I'm in Europe . I changed to US, JAPAN, AUS and EURO, but it didn't help . I'll try the same with the .03 radio. I've flashed both the .03 and .04 radio's before, but not together with the instructions at the end of the mentioned thread.
I have trying to use the HD2 over the last 3 days and getting real problems with intermittent signal loss.
I know i have low signal from the mobile operator in some parts of my home but that has never been a problem with other HTC phones i used before. If the signal was too weak it would just drop out but come back if i moved a bit.
With the HD2 once the signal indicator turns red it stays that way even if i move to a strong signal area.
The weird thing is sometimes i would leave the phone sitting in one place with four bars and then minutes later it would show up with no signal and i can't receive calls.
Even stranger is that in all these cases where there is no apparent signal, all i need to do is press the send button to try making a call and the signal "magically" re-appears and all is fine. I've tried at least four differnt radios as well as the energy ROM ... no change.
Any ideas ? this is reaallly frustrating!!!!!!
do the problems resemble what I experienced here?:

change radio ROM, well experiment with several of them by trial and error (read the sticky/tutorial first).
OR
buy an indoor signal booster.
Well, regardless of the radio version ive had really odd intermitant service.
the best way ive found to help this is turn off 3G / HSDPA
Doing this forces the device to remain on GPRS, it means the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer and it doent drop the connection every time the device feels like trying to connect with HSDPA or drops it for no apparent reason.

it seem that you were losing data connection .... i'm a lot worse off ... i lose data AND voice .. all connectivity ... so i don't receive calls
as i said the weird thing is as soon as press send to initiate a call, cthe signal bars come back and everything works fine!!
as i said, stop 3G from working, when switching between the two due to what ever reason the HD2 decides to drop it will kill your connection, voice and all until it switches back. there is an issue with 3G and im wondering if its everyone or just folk using TMOUS radio and thus recieving the extra RAM
To disable 3G/HSDPA to test,
Open Comm Manager and click on Phone (not the on/off switch) to go to phone options. Scroll to bottom and select BAND. Switch network type from Auto to GSM.
3G/HSDPA is only needed for internet surfing. Time, weather, stock updates and email downloads don't really benefit from it. So turning it off this way will make these type data connections go through the EDGE network which is plenty fast enough for it. When you need to surf the net, go back and switch it to Auto and you will get 3G or faster speeds for that.

have you found a fix?
You could always try a signal booster on eBay for like 5...

If its just 3G then its probable just T-Mobile or then again a Hardware/Firmware issue
try a different ROM, Radio
I have this same issue I running a T-Mobile USA (using radio 2.12 but then again it was doing it on 2.15 as well) and it just drops all connectivity and says no service I have to search the network again.
My phone is unlocked I don't know if that might have anything to do with it as well
I've had this problem on my HD2 since i got it.
Edge (E), works but slow as all get out. 2-4s ping times or time outs. 3G (and when i say 3G i mean when it says 3G in the status bar) doesn't work at all. HSDPA (H) works great, WHEN it stays that way, which it doesn't.
It can switch between 3G to H every 10 seconds.
And i'm using it for tethering primarily, which makes working painful. Lose your VPN and SSH sessions constantly. Some days it's ok. But most, horrible. btw, i'm in the Denver area.
I've tried stock roms and custom roms (primarily Energy). All radios. Nothing fixes it!
This is the only thing I don't like about my HD2 and/or t-mobile. And it's a whopper. I'm almost ready to get another phone or carrier, depending on what's causing this.

I have 4 HD2's with one having the problem you describe and have come to the conclusion it's a hardware issue. Probably a cold solder joint on the antenna lead.
In WinMo or Android the signal bars jump all over the place but the signal level in 'about phone' shows a constant signal even though the bars show nothing. I don't drop to many calls but miss more than a few incoming. I travel for 5-8 hrs in the same area everyday and very familiar of good and bad areas of reception. I have tried stock/cooked ROM's/Radio's with no noticeable difference.
I'll probably send mine in to HTC to be looked at.
Hey guys, ive been tethering for awhile now, and had no problems, just really noticed this after my second month of service.
But, when tethering, HTML web browsing is pretty slow, and my Network Meter widget on my computer says im loading webpages at only 25 -30 KB/s but when i download a torrent/file or anything else (even streaming youtube) my dl speeds go up to 130-208 kB/s. So i thought it was IE9 but then when connected to an actual wifi access point, i experience so issues. Also, i downloaded Google Chrome and the same thing happens. Secondly, when im skyping or oovooing, it will randomly disconnect and hang me up, but yet the icon on my phone says that im still connected to data and everything is fine.
Question is this: Do you think the issue resides in my laptop, phone, WiFi tether app, or T-Mobile network?
I must add both the speedtest app and website (ran from computer) yeild the same speeds. Im completly stumped as to why its like this, im putting my money on the tethering app, but at times when i get kicked off skype and it says i have no internet connection, i try loading a webpage on my phone and it takes a bit longer. (Its really hard to say) but i really need ideas as to where i can start diagnosing and eliminating things.
AS USUAL THANKS GUYS

Im on CLk, i dont like MAGLDR because i have the red key digitizer error. Where the touch screen becomes unresponsive when you use the end key. I might tear it apart and try to fix it someday. But a thought just came across, could T-Mobile somehow know im tethering and throttle me then?
Ah! You didn't mention TMo (am on XDA app, can't see it even of you have added it to your profile!)
It's very much a possibility- other TMo users, can you check this one out?
And how do you tether- wifi or wired? Built-in or an app? I use built-in for wireless and the wired tether app. The app shows the speeds in realtime, try it if you already haven't...

Haha sorry man! Wasnt sure if it mattered. But i have a feeling its my phone, as something strange happened just a few minutes ago, i was tethering, and i lost connection, so i enabled Airplane mode, then disabled it, and it said 3 bars of service no matter where i was.. it was like the radio got stuck/froze or something. Im gonna flash another radio just to check it out. Also, i use the WiFi tether for root users app which actualy uses built in wifi tethering. But i cant really see the speeds as my phone only gets 3g on my window sill xD and i use VNC viewer to control my phone from my computer. And the tether app uses the wifi port to monitor speeds, so it goes way high when im controlling my phone with VNC from my computer so its hard to say. Im more convinced its the phone :/ but just dont know what.
I think ive narrowed it down, after changing ROM, RADIO, kernel, location, only one thing made a difference, and that was location. I think the connection is unstable because there are no bars showing, just shows the H and that its connected, so i think its just that my signal is horrible, wont know till i get my SGS2, if i get it. :/ my HD2 sucks with signal, can a bad SIM cause this?

Are you sure your place has a good signal, and its just the HD2 that is not picking up? Try with another phone. I used to have black-spots in my home a long while back, and used some app for Symbian for my E72 to check the signal strength at various places within the house as well as the cellular towers that is available for me - maybe something like that is available for Android (should be available for sure, is Symbian has it Android will have a million alternative!).

Well i tried with my Sprint Touch Pro 2, and it got really good edge signal (doesnt support 3g on tmo) but when id put my hands around it it would loose service, but in general, it was much better then the HD2. and actually, we went to see a circus, and inside the stadium, HD2 had no service, but Touch Pro 2 had full bars... so im guessing its the HD2. :/

when doing anything involving a data connection, and then dealing with the resulting increased access times.
No silly of course not. There's nothing you can do to it to make it stick. Its not even an issue.

you will only see H+ when data is flowing, otherwise you will see H. btw, the H+ symbol isnt included in stock, its included in custom roms. that doesnt mean it doesnt get H+, it just doesnt differentiate between the two.
be glad it works , mine is .... H - H(locked up) - H - H(Locked up) - H - H(locked up)... and so on

That's my issue. The 10 seconds plus it sometimes takes to up the connections.

Yes it is an issue, especially when it's the cause of a long pause.

I know you'll only see it when you're using data. And I also know it's only in custom ROMs. I have CM10.1. My problem is that it keeps switching. I want it to stay in H+ for my whole browsing session.
but it can't stay H+ if your data is not flowing.. and your data flow is all dependent upon your connection to your carrier's tower. So I guess if you want constant H+, stand under your carrier's cell tower and never stop surfing the web.

It could mean you have a data drop. So that's the issue. The H or H+ doesn't do anything much.

I can see how that's frustrating but the other option would be to have your phone die in 3 hours because that state the radio is in sucks power like crazy which is why it drops back to H (H is a bug, normal behavior is to drop all the way back to "3G" which is plain UMTS when data is not actively being used in order to save power and release the channel on the tower. They only have like 200 or so per tower so they won't let you hog one all day because you are impatient.)

I don't mean something that permanently does that. Something like an application that sends out random pings, and then you turn it off when you're done. Something so that audio streaming doesn't start skipping when it feels it needs to once again do that up/down crap.
Its going to take lot of modding to make that happen. I made a mod to make the icon always say h+ but that doesn't affect the data speed. The phone does this to save battery, and its really needed as this phone doesn't have great battery life.

I know it does it for battery life, but there are times where a constant connection is needed, and it decides to do that switching stuff.
I am reviving this in hope of an answer. Now it does it so frequently, it's impossible to even watch a YouTube video without that loading spinner popping up every five seconds. It keeps switching between H and H+ every few seconds now.
Always on H+

If im tethering i realize that my connection is kinda jumpy as well (switching between 3G and H+). Watching youtube videos is annoying because switching between the modes will always throw in a pretty annoying latency spike. However, I'm happy to say that I found a temporary work around. Most of the time, if you have a decent signal, your mode will drop in between modes because it isn't using the data. This is a good thing because it prevents your battery from flatlining in as little time as an hour. You need this in a mobile device! However, when you are plugged in - its a bit less useful. What I do while tethering is open up a Torrent client (Tixati) and download the Ubuntu linux distro. This is completely legal and it provides background network activity. I limit the incoming and outgoing bandwidth to 10 KB/s - this is sufficient for keeping the mode from dropping back to 3G, while keeping the connection alive with a ~60ms latency for gaming/youtbue/etc. If you want to do this on mobile, do the same with a mobile torrenting client. I MUST STRESS THOUGH! GET A LEGAL TORRENT! There is no reason to get in trouble over something as trivial as this.
Anyone get this linux distro working? I'm having trouble finding the file.
I have the same problem. It's too annoying the switch between H and H+. Does anyone resolve the problem? because sometimes it switch to H when I surf the web and there is a problem for me
