Hi! I have been browsing the Nexus One forums for a while now, but I seem to have a strange problem.
I had a Nexus One that was working fine, but there was a piece of dust under my screen. It switched to HSDPA, and I had none of the issues that I have now. I sent it to HTC, but they didn't want to repair it, because it was rooted. I think they flashed something into the phone, because ever since the internet connection is very buggy. 3G (UMTS) didn't cause any problems then, but now if I hold my hand at the bottom of the nexus, connection indicator lowers (Cell Viewer: ranging from -1 to 8). When I hold the phone up int he air the connection varies between 14 and 24 (UMTS). The phone doesn't switch to HSDPA AT ALL!
I tried the hsxpa-tweak in build.prop, but it didn't help. I am using Cyans latest stable. I have wiped, installed stock, upgraded to cyan again, and tried staying on the stock rom, to no avail.
Is there something really stupid that I am not seeing? Or would it mean that the transporter has damaged my phone antenna by dropping it? :O
What makes you believe you're not getting HSDPA? Have you tested the actual speed of your connection? Keep in mind, on an unrooted Nexus One, your signal indicator will always show 3G even when HSDPA is active. It only shows the H when you're using a custom ROM.
Also, the signal fluctuation when covering the bottom of the phone is well documented at this point. It's normal.
HSDPA is only active when the network deems you need it, it'll just sits on 3G all other times.
Funny..I'm on HSPA all the time when on 3G..never saw UMTS not one. Yet on a cliq I saw UMTS...

I used Cell Viewer to test signal type. I was consistantly on HSDPA before it got sent in to HTC.

Also, check which Radio Firmware you have installed now. If you have 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2 installed, try downgrading to 32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2.

Hmm... I've had a look at that thread, thanks for the pointer!
Too bad I'm in Europe . I changed to US, JAPAN, AUS and EURO, but it didn't help . I'll try the same with the .03 radio. I've flashed both the .03 and .04 radio's before, but not together with the instructions at the end of the mentioned thread.

Flash HardSPL first, then upgrade your radio.
Ive linked to my guides incase your unfamiliar with the process.
The newer radio should possibly increase your GSM efficiency. Are you in a decent area for reception?

Hi, many thanks for your detailed guides. I've upgraded Radio to 1.38.00.10 but the problem still persists. I'm in a very good coverage area, always get full bars 3G when it works. Soft-reset my phone and now it's searching in vain for network signal, I'm confused
What operator are you with ? Maybe the cell where you live is getting overloaded. We had a problem similiar to this last month when our local base station had a problem. Our work-around was to disable 3G but not using a Hermes . Apparently the handset tries to register using the 'best' data-bearer its configured for. So disabling 3G made it register with GPRS which worked fine. They then fixed the base station and we were able to re-enable 3G. I would
guess Charlton would have a lot of subscribers per cell. You would expect the coverage to be better in a built-up areas but who knows. Maybe an enquiry/ complaint to the operator would at least tell you if they know of a problem and if its temporary or longer term
Cheers for that. I'm with T-Mobile. What's bugging me is that this signal disappearance only happens sometimes. It's not that I don't have 3G (or signal for that matter) at all, I still get full 3G signals fine most of the time. But you probably were right, looks like it's a fault from the operator's cell in the area, I will give them a call next week to see if there's an explanation.
I've noticed this problem when I'm in the south London area (very general I know). People have got around the issue temporarily by forcing the phone to GPRS only
More problems! After upgrading to 1.38 and trying all sort of "good" radios like 1.17, 1.27, 1.34 I can't make/receive calls unless GSM is forced. There must be something wrong within my immediate area because with the same radios everything works flawless just 10 mins down the road. I just called TMob and there's no technical fault or anything from their side. I will just have to put up without 3G until the problem fixes itself
There are lots of people complaining about 3g on T mobile in UK. They seem to have serious issues with Hermes devices and the dropdown to GSM.
I had a problem six months ago with my hermes on orange at home in SW London. For a few weeks it was mucking about - I rang O who advised me that they were experiencing some local issues but would fix them within days. I switched to GSM for a few days. When I switched back its worked fine for last five months.
3G gone mad!
the same thing was happening to me. Full 3G reception in Leicester, tried to connect to get my e-mails and then the signal totally goes. The same thing happens when I make calls as well. Switched to GSM and everything worked. Now in York and everything is working on 3G.
Network is T-Mobile.
This sounds similar to the issues I am having.
Do you get the phone hanging as it attempts to start a call and then after a while a message stating that it was unable to connect?....sometimes resulting in a soft reset to bring the device back online? In my case toggling bluetooth will reset the connection.
I am with T-Mobile in Glasgow but get the same issues during the day in Edinburgh
No 3G

No mine doesn't say anything, it sounds "ding ding" after a few secs like when you press the hang up button. I can use the Internet but anything to do with calls is just impossible. I've switch to GSM now and everything's back to normal. A bit annoying can't use 3G at home.
Just a simple poll to see how many people have worse 3G stability after the radio update. Personally, it's really bad for me.... I'll get about 5-10 mins of 3G (4 bars) access before it decides not to work in any app. To use data, I have to switch over to Edge which works 100% of the time.
I still get the same 3G as far as I have noticed, but I'm seeing some strange data rates: just tested at 903 down and 789 up. I've had more than a few of these results, even some where the up speed is higher than the down. All since the new radio. App I'm using is speedtest.net FWIW.
Hmmm... I did notice my 3G is faster but so much less stable. I still can't access the 3G since I started the topic. Hopefully someone else from Oklahoma sees this thread... maybe it's just my area.
I can get on EDGE all I want... I just can't do 3G, regardless of the fact I have 4 bars of it. It just pings the server every 5 secs and gets nothing in return, almost like the server is either refusing it or not there. I wonder if I have a bad APN?
I'm using the stock 2.1 rom+update from the other day... I installed a small superuser+highmem hack from modaco just to root it. No other mods/themes have been installed.
I believe the bars are just relating to standard voice connection status not the quality of your 3G. I could be wrong though. I think you can have a great voice conn and shoddy 3G and vice versa.
In Chicago and I have the same issue. I had no 3G problems before the update and now my phone constantly switches between 3G/Edge/no service.
My battery life is also very very poor now due to this.
Not very happy. Half the time I get no 3G at all now whereas before I had 4 bars almost everywhere.

Still having the problem... but after selecting T-Mobile, it now is showing the "upload" as solid instead of pinging every 5 secs... but I still get nothing downstream.
I play HomeRunBattle3D a lot and it constantly gets a weak connection or drops me out of the game.
At work I have 3G in only 1/2 the office now...
I flashed it to help but it def makes it worse for me.
I just applied the fix from above and will check back here after a few days...
I flashed this and I am using CM5 beta4 not sure if the E79 update has something else in the software as I dont think CM5 is using the OTA fixes yet so maybe the problem is there?
mine is difinately worse as well. Also after choosing tmobile network I think it made it even worse again. I assume this is similar to the problems others were having with the old radio when mine was fine. I was just hoping to maybe get some better reception with the new radio because that was lacking a bit.
now in my office where I used to get 3 bars 3g my phone is sitting here with 2-3 bars Edge. hmmm...I must admit though that it is browsing much faster on Edge than it was before...? Possible the roms are reading the radio incorrectly?
I used the phone on ATT edge before switching to tmobile and I was impressed by how fast even browsing was on ATT edge especially when Tmobile 3g didn't feel too much faster after I switched over. Tmobile edge was also dog slow. now Edge seems to have sped up a good bit....I might try flashing the stock rom for now and see how that does with the new radio.
Looks like those that are having issues are not running the stock rom (but have the new radio flashed). I'd be willing to bet switching back 100% stock (2.1 update-1)would resolve the issue.

I'm running stock.
Just to update everyone... I've had a good solid 3G connection for the past hour or so... with no hiccups.

I'm beginning to think this is an issue on T-Mobile's end...
EDIT: Nevermind... there it went again.

I have not yet received the OTA update and I am seeing similarly large upload numbers today as well (it just started happening as of this morning). This is in the SF Bay Area. I'd be willing to be that they are more due to network upgrades than any changes in the 3G radio.
I'm on stock N1 bought on launch date. I had fine 3G before update and fine 3G after update. I would say I'm in 3G 99% of time. It even goes into HSDPA when I begin to surf and and when pages are done loading its back to UMTS..I've maybe only seen Edge once or twice since I've got my phone. I'm on Tmobile in Louisville .
It's been about the same pre/post update. It's rock solid 3-4 bars 3G w/HSPA most places, but bouncing between 3 bars of EDGE and 4 bars of 3G, with it usually being 2 bars of 3G at home. Before updating, it might have received one less bar everywhere.
3G seems to be around -100db, while 2G is around -70. Plus or minus 10db.
mine stayed the same, almost no 3G almost always edge, but now my GPS does not work.
Nexus on vodafone spain
I just had a single annoying problem related with 3G BEFORE the update...
And after the update...gues what?
It´s more of the SAME:
-Everytime I receive or make a CALL...my 3G connection switch to GPRS and doesn´t recover unless I change over Airplane Mode.
Please...tell me that I´m the only one
3G was fine before the update, and now rarely works, and takes a long time to start when it does.
Im in San Antonio TX and before update, my 3g would go to edge every now and again. Not too big of a deal really. But after my update (I did the OTA manually thanks to the forums! ) I get 3g constantly and have yet to see the edge pop up.
My connection is definitely much less stable. I now strugle to load pages when I have a 3g icon and at least 2 bars of signal. Before the update I had no trouble loading pages even with a really weak signal. Something is definitely ****ed with this half baked update.
I also posted athread on google support forums, please contribute your findings there as that i the only place where google can actually see feedback.

Hi everyone.
Since upgrading to 1.66, I have noticed something rather annoying and hope someone can provide a solution to fixing it.
When I was on 1.48, the H icon at the top of the screen would always be there. I was effectively connected to the internet all the time, and was able to leave MSN messenger etc open and I'd always be online.
When I upgraded to 1.66, the icon at the top of the screen is always 3G. It only changes to H when I'm actually using the internet. If I open the browser and check out a website, the 3G changes to H and the website begins to load. It changes back to 3G when any internet connectivity is idle.
I can only access the internet when H is displayed, but I want it connected permanently like it was on 1.48.
It's like the phone is disconnecting from the internet when I'm not using the browser. It's not very useful when I need to keep MSN messenger open all day.
Thanks.
It's not disconnected when it says 3G. It simply switches to the slower mode when nothing is being transferred to save resources. As soon as something actually needs to be transferred it goes to H again to get the fastest available speed.

Ah, okay. I can't seem to visit any websites when 3G is displayed though. Perhaps that could be to do with my operator settings or something?
i have had the same problem since installing the sms patches.... i have since hard reset to remove the patch... and testing it now... it is very anoying because it keeps my msn disconnected...
I'm using Dutty's 1.5 (it's a great ROM!) with a 2.07 radio and I've got the same problem..
When it says 3G, nothing seems to come through.. when it changes to H, the webpage starts loading...
Does anyone have a fix to make it not switch back and forth between H and 3G? It gets frustrating because it often takes 1 or 2 seconds to switch between the modes....

Let us know how to you get on because I need this fixed.
My MSN stays connected fine in 3G. Push email works perfect too.
The icons only show the available type of signal.
They don't mean you are connected.
When you do connect by opening an app that uses the appropriate signal then the icon changes to show the signal that you are connected with.
If H is not available in a particular area then it will stay on 3G and if that's not available then G with show.
Hey guys. I'm on my 4th HD2 handset now since upgrading my vodafone contract one month ago. First two handsets had similar probs as allot of you have had, i.e sms not working, alarm not working etc etc. I upgraded to the 1.66 rom when i got my 3rd handset from phones4u. I then started getting the same issues as you just described- internet only profficiently working when H coverage is active. When it goes below that then nothing happens at all. I returned the handset today and got a new one. This one already had the 1.66 Rom update installed and sure enough, had the same internet issues. I started fiddling with settings and changed the band setting from 'auto' to 'WCDMA'. ( just trial and error, so senior members please chime in if i have given bad advise!) This seems to keep the network coverage constantly in H and since changing it several hours ago i have not had any issues.
Start> Settings>Wireless controls>Phone>Band> Change Auto to WCDMA
Give it a go!

Wouldnt that make the phone stick to the 3G/HSDPA/WCDMA band only and cause the phone to have no reception around certain areas that still operate on 2G GSM?
Exact.
I rather tend to do the opposite for that reason if I have trouble (sometimes you're in areas where 3G reception is low and it keeps switching between 3G and EDGE all the time), I'll force EDGE only. It's slower, but at least the connection is constant.
When at work mine fights bewteen 3g and h and both are like 1 bar signals, i'd rather disable both when at work as G is full signal.
Is there a way?
I have trying to use the HD2 over the last 3 days and getting real problems with intermittent signal loss.
I know i have low signal from the mobile operator in some parts of my home but that has never been a problem with other HTC phones i used before. If the signal was too weak it would just drop out but come back if i moved a bit.
With the HD2 once the signal indicator turns red it stays that way even if i move to a strong signal area.
The weird thing is sometimes i would leave the phone sitting in one place with four bars and then minutes later it would show up with no signal and i can't receive calls.
Even stranger is that in all these cases where there is no apparent signal, all i need to do is press the send button to try making a call and the signal "magically" re-appears and all is fine. I've tried at least four differnt radios as well as the energy ROM ... no change.
Any ideas ? this is reaallly frustrating!!!!!!
do the problems resemble what I experienced here?:

change radio ROM, well experiment with several of them by trial and error (read the sticky/tutorial first).
OR
buy an indoor signal booster.
Well, regardless of the radio version ive had really odd intermitant service.
the best way ive found to help this is turn off 3G / HSDPA
Doing this forces the device to remain on GPRS, it means the battery lasts a hell of a lot longer and it doent drop the connection every time the device feels like trying to connect with HSDPA or drops it for no apparent reason.

it seem that you were losing data connection .... i'm a lot worse off ... i lose data AND voice .. all connectivity ... so i don't receive calls
as i said the weird thing is as soon as press send to initiate a call, cthe signal bars come back and everything works fine!!
as i said, stop 3G from working, when switching between the two due to what ever reason the HD2 decides to drop it will kill your connection, voice and all until it switches back. there is an issue with 3G and im wondering if its everyone or just folk using TMOUS radio and thus recieving the extra RAM
To disable 3G/HSDPA to test,
Open Comm Manager and click on Phone (not the on/off switch) to go to phone options. Scroll to bottom and select BAND. Switch network type from Auto to GSM.
3G/HSDPA is only needed for internet surfing. Time, weather, stock updates and email downloads don't really benefit from it. So turning it off this way will make these type data connections go through the EDGE network which is plenty fast enough for it. When you need to surf the net, go back and switch it to Auto and you will get 3G or faster speeds for that.

have you found a fix?
You could always try a signal booster on eBay for like 5...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
If its just 3G then its probable just T-Mobile or then again a Hardware/Firmware issue
try a different ROM, Radio
I have this same issue I running a T-Mobile USA (using radio 2.12 but then again it was doing it on 2.15 as well) and it just drops all connectivity and says no service I have to search the network again.
My phone is unlocked I don't know if that might have anything to do with it as well
I've had this problem on my HD2 since i got it.
Edge (E), works but slow as all get out. 2-4s ping times or time outs. 3G (and when i say 3G i mean when it says 3G in the status bar) doesn't work at all. HSDPA (H) works great, WHEN it stays that way, which it doesn't.
It can switch between 3G to H every 10 seconds.
And i'm using it for tethering primarily, which makes working painful. Lose your VPN and SSH sessions constantly. Some days it's ok. But most, horrible. btw, i'm in the Denver area.
I've tried stock roms and custom roms (primarily Energy). All radios. Nothing fixes it!
This is the only thing I don't like about my HD2 and/or t-mobile. And it's a whopper. I'm almost ready to get another phone or carrier, depending on what's causing this.

I have 4 HD2's with one having the problem you describe and have come to the conclusion it's a hardware issue. Probably a cold solder joint on the antenna lead.
In WinMo or Android the signal bars jump all over the place but the signal level in 'about phone' shows a constant signal even though the bars show nothing. I don't drop to many calls but miss more than a few incoming. I travel for 5-8 hrs in the same area everyday and very familiar of good and bad areas of reception. I have tried stock/cooked ROM's/Radio's with no noticeable difference.
I'll probably send mine in to HTC to be looked at.
Right, a little back story.
I brought my SGS2 at the start of May in the UK on O2 so I have an early model which came with the firmware before KE1. I rooted in the first week and was flashing Villainrom 1.0 before too long with no data problems.
I think it was around KE2 with Lite'ning rom that I first saw my phone constantly switching between H & 3G and stalling when receiving or sending data. This behaviour has continued through all the firmwares I've tried with many different modems. I moved onto to Cognition when it was v1.01 and have been using it all the way unto 1.2 with the KG3 modem. Again still with data connecting problems.
Things I have tried -
Turning off fast dormacy
Editing the build.prop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097612&highlight=build.prop pages 1-5
Switching off HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command
Disabling juice defender
Switching to WCDMA only
Changing modems
Full hard reset and reflasing of roms
Even with the above on multiple roms and rom versions my data connection was unreliable at best and killing spree warranting at its worst.
Possible fix-
What i found lurking on XDA on a slow day at work was the command below
*#2263#
This allows you to select which bands your phone uses. I selected option 2 then tested the 4 available bands. They all resulted in a complete loss of reception except WCDMA 2100. this is probably network specific you'll need to try it yourselves.
The results and current settings
Now when I try to use my data connection the phone no longer switches between H & 3G. It will start on 3G then find H and stay there, I see a slight delay if its been in deep sleep or JD has cut the connect but this is normal for the phone to start on 3G to save power.
Fast dormacy - off
build.prop -stock/unedited (I found this worked for me for a while but since 2.3.4 it didnt seem to help)
HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command - both on
Juice defender - on
WCDMA only selected as when picking a band it doesn't seem to like having a GSM band selected as well (happy to be corrected on that)
Modem KG3 -
Rom cog 1.2 - I'm patiently waiting 1.4 based on KG6 to test my findings.
Conclusion-
Okay it could be that selecting a band does F'all and that I'm seeing better results for a completely different reason. I'm not a developer so my fixing skills amount to playing with stuff I don't fully understand and seeing how more or less broke I've made it.
After thought -
Ive seen on the sensation forum they have discussed the wrong IMEI code being the cause of poor data speeds so I may look into that next.
Please share your experiences and anything else you've tried.

That should be no connection as IMEI belongs to phone and handshakes with network first .
KG6 modem some report as better .

I will have to give this a try and see how it works, thanks for the share.
I am in the same boat, it is VERY frustrating to say the least. A typical scenario for me is: reading a web page on my S2 for a good few minutes (3g has gone to sleep mode by the time I have finished reading), I click on a link, 3g flashes, H comes up and flashes once.....wait.....wait.......wait......10 seconds later it decides to initiate a connection and take me where I want to go! It does the same thing with the XDA app. I have been onto O2 about this a couple of weeks ago, all they did was give me the settings over the phone (which were the exact same ones I already had) and they also sent me a replacement sim card, suffice to say, there is no change. Now I am convinced its a network problem of some sort, I have a three sim card which I have been trying out and the above problems do not exist anymore when using three, I click a link after 3g has gone to sleep and it goes from 3g to H and initialises the data transfer in one smooth motion. It looks like I'll be getting my PAC code and moving to Three!
would be interested to hear if switching to the 2100 band helps at all seeing as your on O2 as well
Mine is O2 via Giffgaff and no problems at all .
Tested KG6 modem Wi|Fi only and it is a stronger signal .

Yeah, forgot to mention that, I have just enabled it. I can't test at the moment though coz there is no 3G coverage where I am. The only problem with enabling it is you will not be able to connect to GPRS or Edge if you need to. But it is worth testing regardless.
Just been out and about and tried that setting, didn't make much difference unfortunately
Maybe it was a combination of tweaks on my end. What rom & modem are you using?

Villain 2.3 with KG3 modem. The problem has been the same whatever ROM I have used, I even flashed back to O2 stock a couple of weeks ago to see if it was a ROM problem, but that was the same. I can't remember what it was like when I first got the handset though, mine was the first batch as well.

The wife is on Giffgaff so I think I'll give that sim a try before I get my PAC off O2.

Right, a little back story.
What i found lurking on XDA on a slow day at work was the command below
*#2263#
This allows you to select which bands your phone uses. I selected option 2 then tested the 4 available bands. They all resulted in a complete loss of reception except WCDMA 2100. this is probably network specific you'll need to try it yourselves.

hi
i am just testing now this fix. i have an o2 phone and i did the same changes you did, disable fast dormancy, changed build.prop settings, will let you know after going a few times underground ;-)
gabrio
confirm, this is working, even when i go underground or when the signal goes away, it gets back to H/H+ and works, gabrio
Give it a little while, I think you'll be back saying it didn't work
Personally, I went ahead with my threat and moved over to 3uk, never looked back since with this problem, been perfect!
I've tried it all. Disabled fast dormancy, hspa, toyed with band selection, edited build.prop (btw, don't bother with it, the network settings you find on the web to type in don't work on the s2) you name it - but it would still cut out. Luckily, my phone is unlocked so I switched my provider and now it works like a charm with all the bells and whistles enabled. I can ride the tram all across warsaw and maybe have a handful of 2-3 second hiccups when I'm listening to online radio. Curiously enough, on my previous provider I've noted that there are some areas (like a busy mall - Arkadia) where it would not stall as well as a few other places, and most other areas that were notorious with data hanging. I'm convinced now that it is an issue on the telco side (*cough*Orange*cough*), and too bad because I was on a prepaid plan with them that for roughly $30 I had 7GB of transfer. I guess they figured they can promise the world on their trash network, because nobody would actually use it up. YMMV.
Had this issue with a UK GS2 purchased from Negri using it on AT&T.
Since upgrading to the latest UK firmware with 2.3.4 I have not had the issue going on about 2 weeks now!
Man was that issue annoying. Had to restart the phone sometimes to get data back.

Ok I did that too though how abt lag? Phone lags a bit opening large sms conversations and browsing home screens.. But peace. Yours too?
