<<UPDATE>>
my radio problem is now sorted.
It was the sim as guest 1 suggested.(thanks dude)
it seems to have to be a specific sim though blue bubbles one with 32k written on one side of it.
all this hassle and their tech support could not fathom it out.
users here and messing with everyones sims i could get hold of has sorted the issues.
so if you suffer the radio not switching back on problem go to your supplier and tell them you DEMAND A NEW SIM of the above type
if o2 supplied you with a light blue plain coloured 16k sim please message this forum I would love to see how many people are affected by this issue.
thanks again for all the advice.
further to that what is the impact of using unlocked ie non o2 sims
i have telefonica movistar sim - not sure whether 32k or 16k or what
is the radio drop problem solely related to o2 users or does it affect other sims??
ie answer for all users is a 32+k capacity sim?
perhaps non o2 users could comment on this problem
i think i had this problem once and a hard reset seems to have fixed it for the time being : running 3.14.13 and 4.16 although may goto 3.15.15 4.16
interesting post talking of revised UK upgrade to improve what appears to have been a rushed UK o2 release in march
seems i have the no radio under startup problem again - softreset not fix it. i have read above thread and understand that a 32mb sim seems to fix the problem for o2 users but... i am a non o2 user running on movitar sim in spain and unsure whether i have a 16mb or 32mb sim.
based on this cna anyone advise what is best.
1. continued hard resets which seem to fix the problem for x days/weeks until it becomes a problem again
2. move from 3.14.13 radio 4.16 to 3.15 eng ( unsure if this has higher radio upgrade )
3. upgrade when freelt available to new uk ram/radio mentioned in other threads ie radio 4.20
to summarize this radio not loading general problem is SIM based or radio s/w based primarily???
Can someone tell me what the Qtek V1640 is?
I have been looking on the web and can't really find any information about it in English.
I've been looking to upgrade my O2 XDA II to an HTC Universal and have found that Vodafone are able to supply the V1640 which they believe to be the same as the Qtek 9000 which I can see from trawling through loads of info is the same as the XDA Exec (or almost).
Does this mean the V1640 is the same device?
Is it the same spec or is it a cut down version?
Does someone have a comparison sheet available for all the different versions of the HTC Universal?
Hi there,
I left Vodafone recently to get an O2 Exec. Their retentions team promised me they could get me a Qtek 1640V which they repeatedly promised was their name for a Qtek 9000, ie an HTC Universal. I spoke to loads of different people and they all promised the same thing.
So, I waited (lots of mistakes over delivery) and waited and eventually I received a Qtek 16*20* V... which is an HTC Blue Angel. Furious, I called up... everyone now insistent that the 1640 is unavailable from Vodafone.
Got my Exec now and it's beautiful, just beautiful.
My advice? Avoid vodafone if you want to ever get your hands on a Universal.
Matt S.
Hi Matt
Yeah I read your post before posting this one.
I orginally was with O2 but there service was appalling so I moved across to Vodafone I've had some serious difficulties with Vodafone in the past but persistence paid off and they are now very VERY helpful... In fact much more so than O2 every were so doubt I will ever go back to O2.
I know Vodafone are preparing the full launch of the product so they are likely to be suffering supply problems just now before they do.
Before they do and before I spend my free upgrade on the VP1640 I want to make sure it is up to spec.
Do you or does anyone else have any more information that can shed light on the VP1640 please?
Anyone can help out on this?
Received the V1640. Nice looking device.
Photo's to follow shortly.
In fact received 2 One for myself and another for my partner.
I can confirm I have a V1640, took me telling me they did them before i got one, but it is definatelty a Universal!

The latest version is! just download the trial you can use it 3 times before it expires!
I have O2 Exec which I flashed months ago with the i-mate Jasjar rom.
I hope i-mate won't forget JJ users like they always do forget their customers after about two rom upgrades. They did that with the i-mate PDA2K which I was one of the first to purchase only to leave us with numerous bugs and only one or two rom updates.
I am wondering if there's a newer ROM than what I have
ROM version: 1.30.76 WWE
ROM date: 02/20/06
Radio version: 1.09.00
Protocol version: 42.42.P8
Still got pretty annoying issues with the machine (same i did with the PDA2k).
Sometimes won't connect to UMTS/GPRS - soft reset needed.
Sometimes won't dial phone numbers i always dial - says 'can't complete the command' or some similar ****.
Sometimes will look for the network endlessly. at times I see i don't get calls and check only to see that the machine was 'searching' for network for hours.
Sometimes machine won't wake up to alerts. It's only when I get a phone call that it awakes it and then i hear all the alarms.
These are all stuff making the machine a nice game, but not something sturdy and reliable you can count on. I new each ROM is usually better and was wondering if there's anything better that I already have.
Thanks guys.
go get Dopod 1.30 or Qtek 1.30 that will be better for you
The latest one is T-Mobile NL ROM 130.115. the second latest is T-Mobile UK Rom 130.114... Third Latest is Dopod WWE Rom 130.111. Forth is Xda Exec Rom 130.107... Fifth Latest is VodaPhone WWE 130.97... Qtek is 6th with 130.77 and I-mate is 7th with 130.76
Has anyone heard if I-mate is going to release a new ROM with A2DP?
I know we can hack/install other ROMs with A2DP, but before I go through the hassle of an update (re-entering all of my data service & e-mail settings, and then re-installing software), I was wondering if a new official I-mate ROM is immanent???
Dear Group, got my new Wizard for Xmas and very nice it is too, i've spent a lot of time getting to know it.
But a question or two.
How long should it take to start up? Mine takes just over 2 mins, is that longer than usual guys?
I should say here that it's an unlocked 02 model with a Vodafone sim. I have noticed that theres several 0s programs installed, none of which i need, but i can't see any way to remove them.
I wonder also whether loading a o2 screen doesn't slow it down a bit, i know from my PC experience that the more strt up items you have the slower it is?
Is there any way i can speed up things, or am i fretting about nothing?
Best Wishes
Please post the Rom version for us. The early roms for all wizard types were REALLY slow to boot. The later ones sped up the boot process immensely.
the Rom version is on the 1st splash screen after a soft Reset. It'll be 4 sets of numbers.
For Example Mine is:
IPL 2.25
SPL 2.25
GSM 02.25
OS 2.25.11.1
My XDA was originally from O2 (April 2006) I then updated to a new QTEK ROM and the change in speed was great.
Since then, O2 have updated their own ROM (www.my-xda.com). This is faster loading and better on the battery.
I am now running a Vodafone SIM on a generic ROM. Just gotta remember the GPRS and MMS settings.
Ah yes, how foolish of me not to give details, and i wrote them all down meaning to. Here they are,,,,
ROM 2.21.4 WNE
Rom Date 3/9/06
Radio Version 02.07.10
Protocal Version 413.1.03
ExtRom Version 2.21.4.101.
I should also mention that i have SPB Pocket Plus and Diary installed, also Wisbar and Phone Alarm.
Many Thanks
Hi,
I am having an absolute nightmare trying to get my brand new 838 to recognise GSM with a Telstra SIM.
It doesn't even ask for a pin, which leads me to think it's not even recognising there's a SIM in there. I can't get into phone setup options and on a very rare occasion (2 out of about 50) it goes to the pin entry on the phone screen and says it's an unrecognised SIM error. So I call telstra because the dopod customer service guys is apparently on hols until the 7th Jan.
First, they told me my old 2G SIM wouldn't work, so off I pop and get a NextG one. No dice..
Then I finally (after15 hours) got an activation for the aussie member's area at dopod and found out you have to put this netwiz.dat in the my documents folder of the device, so I do. No dice..
So I download the ROM update, even though it says the phone is already that version. No dice..
Then, another telstra tecchie says that even though my phone contract is with them, they don't support the handset so they basically don't want a bar of it, but they did tell me that as far as they know, all dopod are locked to 3. I have used the add/remove option to delete the 3 smartphone program from the device but, you guessed it. No dice..
Has anyone else had this problem, or is anyone able to offer some advice? I'm about to throw the damn thing against a wall in frustration.
Thanks
Not much help I know but you are not alone:
Might be something in these?

Thanks.
I've tried flashing the older ROM to bring the bootloader back to 1.04, but I get a vendor error.
Here's a readout of the checkimage command:
USB>checkimage
IPL CRC checksum = 0x14F034AA
SPL CRC checksum = 0x9382C208
CE CRC checksum = 0xA08CDD91
ExtROM CRC checksum = 0xB5A1BAF9
Radio Image CRC checksum = Checksum: Wait interpreter timeout

Dopod 838pro's bought from 3 stores in australia are locked (via the radio) to the 3 network. removing the '3' apps wont do the trick. therefore it wont recognise any other sim, e.g. telstra, vodafone or optus.
the only Hermes device sold in Australia that is not locked to any network is the Imate JASJAM.
to unlock your dopod 838pro to use with Telstra you will have to (at your own risk) unlock it (see the wiki for info) - but this may void your waranty.
I have tried flashing the ROM with version 23 and also 30 of dopod and also with a jasjam ROM. I keep getting a vendor error, even with the dopod ones.
The phone was purchased from a company called corporate express, not from 3, so I can't see why it should be locked.
Can anyone offer some advice on the flashing issue?

from what I know, dopod 838pro are sold exclusively by 3 Australia (and other licensed resellers in collaboration with 3)
Imate jasjams are sold by telstra (and other licenses resellers such as computer world)
Have you got a friend with a 3 USIM? If so, best is to try to see if your dopod recognises the sim first.
if it doesnt, then there is something else wrong with the device.
In regards to flashing, it all depends on the bootloader you have. if you have 1.04 then you can flash any of the roms. but if you flash a rom with a bootloader 1.06 or higher, then you cannot flash to a rom with a different CID. you might want to CID unlock your device. Please viist the wiki and also visit the STICKY thread in the upgrading section of thes forum which presents a tutorial.
Cheers,
Ronny
Considering you haven't got any sim to work in your phone, perhaps it's faulty?
I know some older GSM sim's wont work in 3g phones. Mine is 2 years old and works fine however. If it's not recognising the sim and giving you a clear error about being locked, I'd suggest you send it back for repair.
I was also told by 3 that the phones are not locked but you must buy them with some kind of contract due to their low price.

This is untrue
I have the Dopod 838 Pro bought from a 3 store and Optus/Virgin Mobile/Vodafone SIMs work perfectly fine
you learn something new everyday.
I have the jasjam that i got throgh telstra, they will always tell you you need a next G sim card even when you dont. i am using a 3 year old sim in it and it works fine
however i dont get UTMS at all (not so bad considering how much it costs)
if i remeber correcttly it had to do with them chaninging voltages about 5 years ago that meant you could fry your sim
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'm going to try unlocking it with IMEI-check and see how I go. If it still doesn't work, I'm sending it back.
Dunno why you're bothering paying to unlock; you can unlock the DoPod 838 Pro free with pofs tool (as you can downgrade - you're having problems, but you have not tried to fix them?).
The first batch of DoPods delivered to Three were not simlocked, later batches are.

Do you have any information that the later batch are simlocked, or just your assumption? Because my Dopod 838Pro is from the latest batch (with latest firmware) and is unlocked...
It's more likely that all the Dopods, irrespective of which batch they're from, are all not locked to any telco.

HEHE
I'd be mighty upset if I bought a phone outright from a non three (or any other telco) dealer and it was locked!
I think the reference was to Dopods sold through three...but the point still stands as they seem to be unlocked.

Its my information from someone who owns and runs a Three shop, and is very much in with the developments (i.e. not just a bum who owns a shop, he works with them in a higher level too). Apparently it was a problem with the distro, and they were meant to be locked, and it would be rectified in the second batch shipped to Three.
I too have a dopod 838 from three and it works with all other carriers sims. Maybe the problem is that the dodpod has its band set to umts exclusively and unless you use the registry hack mentioned in the wiki (or by secureGSM) the band tab will not appear to allow changing to other bands. This is a problem for all user's of three because their network is limited and the phone can't go into roaming mode without the band setting modifications.
OdeeanRDeathshead is correct.
the latest Aus 1.30 firmware hides the network bands.
use the reg hack to unhide it and set it to auto and auto.
Thanks for all the feedback folks.
The helpful gents at IMEI-Check inform me that the radio is buggered, which is why nothing will flash and I can't sort the phone out. I'm sending it back to the store for a new one which will hopefully work as designed out of the box.
Will keep you posted.
