Hard resetting an unlocked xda - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

HI
I have read it in some threads somewhere but I couldn't find it. I have some bugs with my sms system and would probably need to hard reset my xda. Will I need to unlock the xda again with the xda manipulator after hard reset? What are the ways not having to manually reinstall programs one by one after hard reset?
Cheers
Vic

Once unlocked, it stays unlocked even after a hard reset.
To avoid reinstalling and reconfiguring, do a backup with something like Sprite's PocketBackup (highly recommended). When you restore, just don't restore the problem databases.

Thanks Carlos,
Will do that . Does SD backup work the same way? Does it backup the old settings and hence defeat the purpose of my resetting of the xda?
Cheers
Vic

I only used it once, it's horribly slow. In ever tried a restore, so I don't know if you can exclude specific files. Use the Sprite product; you can do it in the eval period. But it is worth buying and using regularly.

Backup Software Found!

I bought Spb Backup a couple of days ago and have just had a major problem with no option but to hard reset.
Spb Backup... wow!
It put me right back to where I was before, applications, Registry hacks all my vga settings.. the lot! its like I never even did a hard reset!
The backup file was stored on the SD card and its an excutable, you just run it, correct the clock and hey presto jobs a goodun! 8)
oh and activesync didnt see any difference!
Did you notice any duplication of application icons, something I notice in another backup application?
That's true. Nice program and cheaper than Sprite backup......

Ya, also Spb seems to have much better compression than Sprite.. AND Spb leaves you with an exe thats self installable
One more question please. Can I store and run SPB Backup application from my SD Card?

Haven't tried that, I don't see why not. The only problem that you might have is if you have scheduled backups setup.. because the app needs to wake the system and the SD card may not be ready quick enough. I have mine installed in the extended ROM.
Download the trial and give it a shot
How do you install it to extended ROM?
One problem I found with SPB Backup, whilst backing up, it hangs at midpoint and then finally finishes but with an error message stating that file 'history.txt' wasnt backed up. Happens everytime. Any idea why?
Thanks. Cheers
I have been trialling this in Beta for a month or so. Even the beta's were good.
However, I do recommend anybody that is considering using it after a failure or error, to hard reset the device prior to the restore, otherwise it overrides and adds to what is already there, so if there are extra files and extra registry entries, they will remain.
The originals will all be restored correctly though, so you are unlikely to detect a problem.
I have restored, and hard reset on many occassions throughout the beta, and it works a dream.
Is it possible to backup, upgrade to a new complete ROM and then restore?
Or when you upgrade to a new rom you cannot use older ROMs backup?
Thank you.
I dont believe you can restore over an upgraded rom.
primarily cause the rom files are not copied. my entire backup, compressed 11mb.
you probably could, and when we were fiddling with WM2003SE for the himalaya model, we used this peculiar feature to do that.
YOu might try it and see, but some of the system files, dlls and hidden files may get modified some how, dont know enough about it. depends on the size and extent of the upgrade, it will probably work, but maybe a little unstable.
Either way, its not recommended. What I do is a fresh rebuild without syncing, with all my registrations, connections, and website usernames and all customisations done, and then call it a "virgin" backup, so that it can always be a perfect starting point for a base machine on a new ROM. This is then kept for te life of that ROM incase I want to go back to a nice clean environment without to much effort.

You shouldnt, bacause you need to restore the registry to make your apps working again but in the new ROM the registry structure or data may (and normally do) change, so you would corrupt the new rom

Problems on my JASJAR
First of all it duplicates Alarm notifications on my JASJAR. Secondly if you hard reset the device and then restore the backup, it always hangs at almost 100%. Had to cancel the restore and restart the device. But once restarted, it looks like everything is restored despite that restore hangup. But i am not certain, might be some problem in restoring with i come across later in future.
Can't depend on it.

hi,
i'm having an odd problem. i am unable to do many things
1) sync with activesync. i can explore and transfer files to and from the device, but only as a guest, i cannot truly sync.
2) remove programs - the list is empty and i cannot remove anything
3) nothing new will install. when i send a cab over, and i try to install it, it will tell me that the installation was unsuccessful.
i belive this all started when an installation over activesync (tomtom) failed, though i am not sure.
i have rebooted my computer, uninstalled and reinstalled activesync, soft-resetted my 8125, tried serial/rndis. nothing seems to work.
the pda is usable right now, from what i can tell. the programs that are already on there work fine. its syncing that is all messed up.
thanks for any help you can give.
and i have managed to fix it, in a fashion
1) make a full backup (except for the sd card) with sprite backup. (i made this backup while i was having these problems)
2) hard reset, let ext rom run
3) restore from backup
everything seems to work, so i can say that i'm happy with it
norelidd, I had your exact same problem last night. Active sync was uploading a CAB file onto the device and I pressed cancelled. No big deal I thought because it cancelled during the uploading process. When I tried to sync it later, nothing worked except for the "explore" files option. I wasn't able to sync, remove, install or even change my today theme. The device itself still functioned normally, made calls normally and got on Cingular's EDGE fine. Just wouldn't sync or install/remove or change the today theme.
I performed several soft resets, deleted any files files on the device created within the last hour of my previous sync incase anything was corrupted, nothing worked. Only solution, I finally bit the bullet and did a hard reset. :x Reinstalled everything and it works fine after the hard reset.
my mini s wont install cab files from the file explorer. you see, ive recently been admitted to hospital (dislocated hip from a rugby tackle, 4 weeks on traction ) and thought i'd download some games to play. but ive tryed downloading loads of different cab files, as obviously i dont have access to my pc, but when i click on them, nothing happens. any ideas??
This has happened to me twice
I am having the same problem. I thought it was an activesync problem but the first time it happened I was installing .cab files and there was a problem with the install. I had to fix the problem with a hard reset.
My problem now is that I just loaded a whole bunch of programs and I was looking for a good back up program but I do NOT have one on my 8125 yet. How can I back up my programs (or can I) if I must do a hard reset. Is there any way of fixing this problem without doing a hard reset?
Please help!
Thanks.
Still looking for help...
I am really trying to avoid a hard reset. Can anyone help us with this problem? I am thinking it may have been caused by installing programs designed for PPC 2003 and not WM5. But who really knows with microsoft.
Thanks!
Hi!
I'm having the same problem!

Hi again!
Just did the hard reset, but I found out a way to backup my PIM data.
Just copied the PIM.vol file that is on the root of the PDA and then, after the hard reset, restored the file. Done!
Best regards,
Deiota
I'll try it - thanks!
I did the hard reset and everything (except syncing through the exchange server is working). I will copy the file over. I am going to install the backup program first. It seems that my problems came from installing third party programs to the minisd card.
ARrrrrrrrrrrrr I have the same problem, canceled an install from activesync during the file upload...
I still don't see why this would cause an issue because the file had not started the install yet but obviously it has done somthing that I don't know how to fix... does any one know what the device does on a WM5 system when an app tries to get installed? is there a way to reset what ever it has changed?
Many thanks
JFC
This is the exact same problem, as I described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=57461
It is a problem with policies getting screwed up all by themselves.
I just had to do a hard reset and as I didn't have enough permissions neither a backup app, I've lost ALL my data.
I hope I won't have the same problem in the future.
Same problem for me last week. I obviously had to hard reset...

Get yourself a registry editor and make sure that your Policies (on HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies\ ) are exactly like these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=13422
This is probably the only thing that can prevent us from a hard reset.
I had the same problem on my HTC Mogul (Titan, Sprint PPC-6800).
1.) Before I started, I made a backup with SPB Backup, after I had my problems, but before importing a clean policies registry from another Mogul.
2.) I imported the file, but that didn't seem to help, so I thought maybe there might be some new policies that weren't there before, so I was going to rename the old policies tree, and then re-import the file. BAD IDEA. As soon as I renamed the tree, Windows Mobile kicked me out and required me to set a device password. It wouldn't run any applications or communicate with Activesync saying I didn't have enough permission. Nor could I re-run Resco Registry Editor.
3.) Someone else here said that he made a Sprite backup after the problems, did a hardware reset then restored, and it solved his problems. That didn't make sense to me, but I did have that newly created SPB Backup image, and my PDA at this point was pretty useless. So I hard reset and restored the image of my device and all the problems are now gone! I don't understand why, but I'm glad it's working.
Conclusion:
If I didn't have backup software already preloaded I would have been screwed, because when my PDA got initially messed up one of the symptoms was that I couldn't install any new applications. I should do backups more often, but the fact that it takes 20+ minutes makes it a unfun process.

How do I re-ROM without loosing settings?

O2 support have suggested I hardreset my Xda Atom Exec, but I have som much stuff installed, navigator, games, settings etc, it'll take me days to get it right again. Is it somhow possible to clone/copy all settings so my phone will be exectly the same after the hard reset?
You can use backup sofware to backup your phone to your SD card and restore it over. However, that would defeat the purpose of the hardreset in some cases. Why are you planning to hardreset?
one more thing - in backup preference choose save only programs. not system.
I need to do the hard reset and test if the phone has feedback problems without any 3rd party software installed, and report this to O2
can u tell me any backup programs for this purpose

You can use Spb Backup
Maybe , some software you setuped in your devices can't backup , because of some registion infomations..
you can backup your documents , reset your software from CAB files.

Text messages are not erased after soft reset.

Hi, I'm new here. Sorry as this is my first post.
But lately, I've encountered a problem with my XDA exec.
I always get text messages all the time, so I delete them. After a soft reset, the deleted messages come back.
All of my messages recieved and sent between the soft reset and that are gone.
I already tried waiting for an hour then soft reset, it still comes back.
Deleted the messages at the 'deleted messages' folder, still there.
I used Jeyo Mobile Companion to delete individual text messages, and it would still come back!
Also, my phone has a tendency to reboot by itself. As much as I dont want to turn off my phone or anything, I dont want to
I dont know what causes it, can you please tell me why?
The xda is my brother's but I'm using it. I dont want to ask him to fix or anything.
I also want to consider hard resetting but I dont know on which way it will erase everything. How much it will reset, and all of that.
Can you also tell me how much a hard reset will erase?
I really need help.
Thanks!
Welcome to forums
A hard reset will wipe all information sotred on your device, your SD card info will be intact (of course if you remove it before hard reset).
it will also help to clean all unnecessary files and apps you have installed so your device will perform much better.
It returns the device to it´s original state of the ROM.
All can be backed up before a hard reset, for example you can use PIM backup to save all your messages sent , recieved, etc.
Here how to hard reset:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_Resets
Good luck,
Thing is, though. I also dont know how to install programs into the xda. I know I know, I should have used search..but I'm a busy student so I dont have time for that
I think the xda is in Windows 6.1, as well.
Won't it get any conflicts or problems with the phone if I hard reset it... as far as I can tell, my brother put and used a different software or ROM different from the 'original' one.
If I choose to hard reset, is there any way to back up the apps and the stuff my brother put? I will be in grave trouble if he founds out that I hard reset the phone and asking him for help when I'm just 'borrowing' his phone :]
No probelm doing hard reset with wm6.1
as I told you use the soft I recommended to back up your messages, for the apps check in start-settings-system-uninstall programs thelist of your installed apps, then let us know and we can point you to the right place to reinstall them.
it wont be any problem if you follow instructions, and your Bro will thank you when he notices better performance
It´s up to you mate,

What is Soft Reset?
soft reset is by far the most common type of reset every PDA users will find, and often useful in solving small problems and strange behavior. When you perform a soft reset your PDA, you're basically causing the device to stop all things that are running, and restart - like rebooting a PC.
If you have programs open and enter data into the time you do a soft reset, you may lose the information you enter, but other than a soft reset does not affect any information you have stored on the PDA at all, and can be done quite safely.
Before performing a soft reset, I usually recommend backing up your data quickly, just to be on the safe side!
Instructions to do a soft reset usually can be found in the user manual that came with your PDA. In general, all you need to do is find the "reset hole" (which may be labeled), and press gently tip of a stylus or a bent paper clip into it. Doing push a small button on the device that triggers a soft reset, so you do not need a lot of pressure. If you are unsure, check with the manufacturer of your PDA!
What is a Hard Reset?
Sometimes also referred to as the "factory reset", a hard reset is the process very seriously, because it always do a hard reset will erase all data from your PDA and restore it to factory when it was originally purchased.
In general, only device manufacturer will suggest you ever do a hard reset, and even then only in the most dreadful circumstances! Even before considering a hard reset, you should always take a thorough backup of your data, and make sure you have a copy of it in a safe place.
Instructions to do a hard reset again usually found in the user guide for your PDA, but if not, you should contact the manufacturer of your PDA and they will be able to help ... but a hard reset should only be used as a last resort!
