Hi All,
I'm new to this board and nowhere near the level of knowledge and expertise as most of the others here, so I apologize ahead of time for the possibly ignorant question I'm about to ask...
I'd like to use my Siemens S56 as a modem w/ my PC without using my AT&T Wireless service. I'm using an IrDA connection which works pefectly. My ISP is Earthlink. I would like to dial in to Earthlink using the S56. I have followed the directions at this link:
http://support.attwireless.com/awsw...ns/s56/setup_guides/winxp_dialup_infrared.jsp
and it works perfectly. I then replaced AT&T's recommendation of dialing "*99#" and entered an Earthlink dial up number.
Problem: When dialing in, there is no pick up at the other end. I have dialed the Earthlink access number directly with a land line AND the S56, (and other Earthlink numbers as well...they all work) and can hear the "handshake" perfectly, but when dialing with the PC, it goes through the process, dials the number (it shows up on the S56 as dialing) but there is no pick-up.
I'd like to avoid AT&T Wireless for S56 modem use and simply use my current ISP. Is this possible?
Thanks for any help.

I 'm experimenting problems to setup a GPRS connection with my local cellualr provider, because it seems that here in MEXICO, you need to configure +52 55 *99# intead of +0..... (tmobile default configuration) I own a TMOBILE XDA PW10B1 ROM: 3.08.10 ENG, Radio Version: 6.02
Can anybody help me to do this configuration?
Sounds like your GPRS operator needs to go on a course
A GPRS handset doesn't actually dial a number. The *99# is used as a code to tell the phone to connect to GPRS it is not sent to the network.
There are actually 3 ways for a GPRS phone to connect to a GPRS network
ATD*99# (or ATD*99***1# on some handsets)
AT+CGACT=1
AT+CGDATA=1
The last two don't work in practice as once you are connected you need a PPP link to do anything useful.
You do need to tell the phone what Access Point you wish to connect to (the bit after the +0~ on the display, which can be removed by tweaking the Dialing Locations section). This is done by the AT+CGDCONT command, but as all AT commands are 'hidden' by Pocket PC the Connection Manager sets this before it connects.
The customer care person in Mexico simply doesn't understand how GPRS works. Unfortunatly few customer care staff do elsewhere in the world either.
Thanks for your replay.
how can I tweak the Dialing Locations section?
I'm new in this kind of tech.
Start\Settings\Connections\Connections\Dialing Locations\Dialing Patterns
Replace everything (or just International Calls) with g.
Mind you it will make no diference to the GPRS operation of the device, only the display of the "dial string" in the message window.
I works!!!! very well. It fells a litte bit slow, but it works... Thanks.
Is that possible to somehow see what AT commands have been used by the connection manager/pocketpc?
I have GPRS working on pocketpc, but I couldn't get it working using AT commands magic and with pppd (under linux, not on the XDA, but the same SIM/network.).
I'm wanting to set up dial up access to my work's internet provider (telstra). My phone is an O2 XDA IIs connected thru Optus, but that's not really that relevant to my problem...
I set up the connection properly but when I tried to connect it says 'no modem at above number'.
I know there are other causes for this message, but mine is simple:
Optus want me to pay extra money to be able to use a 'data line'. And because it would seem SO much more expensive to do things that way, well hey, I might as well just use GPRS, yes? NO! I've got a cap at $79 for $500 worth of calls, and this dialup number is a local call... so I could theoretically be on the internet for hours on my PDA, but Optus don't want me to do that.
Now I tried calling the number normally using the mobile and I heard beeps etc.
So my question is: What software can I use to translate that into a dialup connection? Surely there must be *some* way around this problem...
Has anyone else overcome this?
Same problem here
Sorry I don't have a solution, but I have the exact same problem. I get the same error, but I can dial the modem number using the phone and it connects.
I'm on Rogers in Canada with an XDA IIs
Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Hello everyone. I am having a problem and I hope that someone can help. I have recently purchased a htc x7501 and I would like to tether my nokia n95 to use the nokia as a bluetooth modem. I have used the n95 as a modem for a n800 so I know that I have the capability.
I have tried the *99# and also *99***1# and neither seems to work. I have searched the net and have seen that some have had success with entering a modem string in wm5 on other devices. I can't find this string in wm6 so im kinda stumped. Please help or point me in the right direction. Thanks!
new bluetooth stack does not support dial up networking...
bluetooth modem
hmm, works for me with a motorola v720 on veizon
3g connection gets about 375kbs per dslreports.com
Tether
When you entered your settings, did you have to simply enter the dial string and that's it? I called T-mobile USA last night and they were no help. I may try calling HTC and see if they have any info about this...
dial up
on the phone, had to enable dial up networking (DUN), then on the advantage, pair the 2, then detup a bluetooth modem (under communications), set dial string.
lots of info at http://www.howardforums.com/ - lookup your phone/carrier first, regadless of what pda they're talking about pairing, and try those settings
Bluetooth tether
I will continue to search howardforums and see if I can come up with something there. I called HTC USA today and spoke with a guy there. First, he told me it was not possible. When I told him that it was clearly stated on pg 120 in the manual, he asked me where did I find the manual. After walking him through the HTC website to locate the manual (remember, he is the tech), he just read the info straight out the manual and said that they can't support it because the phone runs WM6! I just hung up on the idiot and realized that i'm gonna have to find the answer on my own!

Actually, he's trying to use his N95 as the modem. It's certainly possible; see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282780
hi all. i have followed numerous guides online, but cannot get my phone on Cricket's network. my ESN is activated, and i can get *611 and *228 to work. all other calls forward to "American Roaming". the current setup is:
Radio 3.42.50
dcd 3.3.4 flash
nue2.47 SPL
1039/1050 PRL
i can access my EPST with a non 000000 code (stupid Qwest) but *228 doesn't work. it will only spit an error after "15 failed attempts" and reboot. i do not have access to a Windows machine running QPST as the drivers are fudged and i would have to reinstall to get the 6700 drivers to work (not my favourite O/S)
i think my issue is in the PRL. Cricket gave me a 5 number MSID last time i called so i think i will be calling them again :/
thanks for any help!
Found this on another forum...hope it helps..

First and most important is the SID number Cricket uses for your area. In Phoenix it is 4923. Every market has a different SID, I had a link to a website that listed all the SID's used by all the carriers in all the US markets but I had to format and reinstall Win XP and lost a great deal of my info. I found the link on Howard Forums, a person whose name was 3 letters starting with X__. Anyway go into that programming menu and in the NAM 1 setup you need to enter the SID, and enter your 10 digit phone number where it asks for MIN and MDN. They may be called other things, (mobile id number, phone number, directory number, MSID) but usually it's just your number you need to enter. The rest of the stuff in the programming menu just leave as it is or set to default value. Now if you are lucky when you dial 611 you will get Cricket's automated system and you only need to give the rep your ESN for them to activate your phone on the network. If you still get VM's CS when dialing 611 then you will need a data cable, free software called BITPIM and a copy of Cricket's current PRL file. That file is automaticly downloaded to your phone when dialing *228 but like I said if your not getting Cricket with 611 then the data cable is needed to manually load the file. Post back here if you have any problems and I will try to help. I have sucessfully done this for two phones (only voice and text msging, don't have parameters to make MMS and BREW work yet)so it is possible. Good luck.

never mind guys. they changed my phone number! $#%#[email protected]!
oh well. anyway, this forum has been great, and i thank you for all the help!
thanks crobs808
i am up and running. it seem that the MSID number is a phone number different from mine, however, if i enter my original phone number as the Mobile Directory number, all is well!
so they can be different on Cricket, though the MDN is the one that calls, texts respond to
Ok... where do I start...
A few weeks ago, I remember seeing something on a thread (I am 99% sure it was XDA) that was talking about using a US CDMA/GSM phone overseas. You would purchase a SIM card which would in turn allow you to make calls/text etc with a LOCAL Foreign number.
The thread was a "hack" that somehow would let you do the above... but it would display your US Local number (i think so that you could call back home to US and have it show your number- or google voice number).
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
I could be completely nuts.... but i swear I saw something like this.
To clarify- this is NOT VOIP calling (like groove IP which uses google voice and your WIFI to make/recieve calls with your GV number)... this was using a foreign GSM SIM but somehow having it show a differeny number.
Thanks in advance.
nudge nudge
Not sure if this will help... but It's worth a mention

I know how to change the number associated with the phone. I just did it with my US Sprint locked S4. I live in Canada - have a Toronto SIM card in, but everytime I called voice mail it would still call the Florida cell number that used to be associated with the old owner of the phone. First you need your MSL number. (Instructions to get your MSL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271618) Then you go to the phone keypad and type ##111111# (The 1's represent the 6 digit MSL number you got) Hit edit - and it will allow you to change the phone number associated with the phone. Like I said - not sure if this would resolve your problem - but I thought I'd give it a try.
