Hi All,
I'm a bit of a newbie to this. I want to upgrade the ROM/ Extended ROM on my SPV M500 the current ROM version is:
Operator Version 6.06.1.175
ROM Version 1.06.00 WWE
ROM Date 01/06/2005
Radio Version 1.05.10
Extended ROM Version 1.06.175
I have found this on the Orange website: http://www.orange.ch/vrtmobilephones/offers/orangePhones/guidesLinks?ts=1137101642566
Is this the best one? I have seen on this forum some information about the Big Storage ROM. I hoped for a WM5 ROM but from what i have read this is not likely for the Magician.
If someone could give me guidance on what ROM to use and if there is an Idiots Guide/ How-To Guide on how to upgrade the ROM i would be very greatful.
Also, do i need to unlock my device? If so how do i do this and what tools do i need?
Regards
Barry
Idiot are your words, but a noob guide is here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=MagicianRomUpgrade
The latest rom available is a 1.13WWE from T-Mobile. You'll loose all the Orange branding when you take that one. Explore the wiki for more info on backing up an existing rom & available roms etc.
M
Thanks for the advice.
When updating the ROM do I need to update the Radio and the Extended ROM?
OLTP - What is the A2DP BT Patch?
Barry,
A shipped-rom will always update the CE image (OS part & specific HTC drivers), the EXT_ROM (branding from the provider) & the Radio (phone, BT & IR) in one go. In your case make a copy from all your Orange cab-files in your ext-rom before upgrading with a non-Orange shipped-rom. You'll loose all your Orange settings etc in the upgrade process! To prevent the ext-rom from executing perform a soft-reset just after the init process from a hard-reset is finished. You got a few seconds for this before the popup with 'customizing' starts. Now the ext-rom is visible (not writeable) & you can back it up.
The A2DP patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33532&highlight=magician+stock+bt
allows you to stream stereo music to a stereo BT headset.
Cheers, M
OLTP,
Thanks for that. This may be a silly question but updating to a T-Mobile ROM won't affect my Orange SIM Card will it?
I have taken a look at the how to guide that you pointed me at, can you only backup the ROM to an SD card or can you back it up direct to the desktop? Im thinking not.
Hi,
Backup is fairly simple:
- get ntrw.exe from the ftp
- get romupdate http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=7510- get a SD-card > 64MB
- make backup of everything you want to keep from your magician & SD-card. everything will be wiped!!
- fully charge your magician
- uncheck usb connection in Act.sync on your PC
- put your magician in Bootloader (camera & power & soft-reset at the same time for a few seconds) wait till screen fades & reads 'serial v1.0x'. Screen is very dark since backlight is of.
- connect usb, now the screen reads 'usb v1.0x'
- start romupgrade on your pc
- pick the magician connection in the listbox, wces something I belief
- now a screen pops up
- type d2s in this screen
- follow progress on pc & magician
- wait till checksum finishes
- get SD from the magician & put it into a cardreader. DON'T FORMAT!!!
- put ntrw in C:\
- start a command window
- type on commandline: ntrw read myrom.nb1 [sd driveletter]:
- follow progress
- error at the end is normal
- finished
- reset your device & restore backup
A TMO rom won't affect your sim, the lock is somewhere else. There's a strange tool on the ftp, run it on your device & the lock is gone, veeeery strange ;-) But your warrenty might be gone as well, doing that it's all up to you.

Thanks for that OLTP.
I have another couple of questions if that is ok. In the Orange branded ROM, there are various applications like. Pocket Word and Excel, GPRS Monitor and Clearview Sutie. Do these come in the T-Mob ROM?
Also one of my biggest bugbears with the Orange ROM is the use of the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack. Does the T-Mobile ROM also use this?
Another nice to have if any can help is would some one be able to post some screen dumps of the T-Mobile interface please.
Barry,
when you make a backup of your ext-rom, you can install those cab-files again after the update. Word&Excel are in the OS-rom, gprs & clearvue are from Orange! & not included by TMO in the rom, but on CD. TMO will give you some white background with PINK accents by default on your today & dialpad. That's about it.
BT? again the M$ version. No great differnce to be expected in that.
If you ever decide to go for BS then you need the ext-rom copy as well & in your case I advice you very strong to have one.
Regards, m
OLTP,
Sorry to be a pain but i'm having one of those days and my brain is not working very well today. Would you explain the below????

Thanks again for all you help
Barry
Barry,
It's very simple, as usual: the ext-rom on your magician contains all kind of Orange stuff. When you flash a T-Mobile rom you get an ext-rom with TMO stuff, including gprs settings you definitely don't want. All Orange stuff in the rom is lost. That's why you need to backup the ext-rom.
When you ever apply BIG Storage you append the ext-rom to your current internal storage folder, increasing it by around 19MB. The ext-rom then no longer exists & all Orange or whatever stuff is in there is lost. So if you want some of the Orange stuff preserved make a backup, before you perform any rom-flashing.
Btw @ the wiki there's also the magician rom lay-out interesting to read at least once.

Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a solution that can give me the possibility to upgrade my Polaris ROM without loosing all installed softs and parameters. Is it possible?
Thanks for your help.

This topic is a perennial. There are many definite opinions on the wisdom of doing this, with some people absolutely sure that it simply won't work ...
BUT
1) make sure you have HardSPL installed 1st, before any cooked ROM upgrade
2) backup your Registry with a Registry program (eg PHM Registry). This is purely a last line of defence if you have to revert to the original ROM
3) backup to your micro-SDHC card with either Spb Backup 2.0.1 or Sprite 6.2.2. I use both for "belt and braces" security
4) flash cooked ROM of choice
5) use backup from 3) to restore over ROM upgrade. Mostly I have found the Sprite restore with Merge Level 1 + database restore to work OK, but the Spb restore with Overwrite files unchecked will probably work just as well
If in the end, none work properly, then just revert to your original ROM and use 3) backups for a full restore ... no harm done !!
I have done this many times on both a Polaris and an X500. Sometimes it doesn't work (eg. the earlier swtos and pdaviet Polaris ROM's) but I eventually found ROM upgrades for both devices that did work. Occasionally for the Polaris I found some Registry entries repeated - eg. \HKLM\Control Panel\MyCtrl - but these are easily deleted.
Be adventurous - you can easily revert if it stuffs up.
Hi
I've read and read and read...but I'm still not sure how to upgrade my Polaris
1. If i upgrade, will I be able to use a swedish keyboard in the phone even if I use a WWE-version? I want to be able to use åäö (swedish chars)
2. I i understand it correctly, I should use hard spl? Is there a good guide?
3. Can I backup my current original HTC-rom?
4. After i install Hard-spl, I then install a ROM or do i install ROM at the same time as when I install Hard spl?
Thanks

1.- dont know i use standard keboard, never cared about it.
2.- yes you should, the best guide is : download, install, run on pc, follow onscreen instructions.
3.-dunno about the ROM but you can backup your stuff...
4.- install hardspl first, then the rom.
Thanks!
Anybody else know about swedish keyboard?

hi,
i don't know if you found your answer yet, its out there, just go through the treads and use the search option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381600&highlight=newbie
what i did was:
1. synchronise first with activesync.
2. start with the official htc update rom.
3. install Hard-spl
4. then hard flash. mail-button + explor button then reset with pen, hold mail and explore ,remove reset. then when asked press send ( green phone button ) do this , and when asked do it again .
5. install cooked rom
6. hard reset.
7. synchronise
p.s. putting the device in bootlader mode is fysicaly demanding ( power button +camera-button and reset with pen, two hands!! ) and seems not to be neccesary
tip:
1. there are a lot of good roms out there try which one you like best ( my favorite m-amine dutch )
2. look for a good backup program ( i like sprite backup, backups on computer and device .exe files ) and if you have a rom you like and synchronised and installed all you programs on and configuered the program- and contact tab etc and everything works fine then backup ! then you can flash all you want
and easely go back to the rom you liked .
3. sometimes if you have to many bugs etc. just start overagain
first hard reset, sync and then start clean with the official rom ( so 1 to 6 as described above )
problems i encounterd : no active sync
no wifi
start all over and they vanished.
have fun!
htc touch cruise
m-amine 2.0 rtm nld + sp2
radio polaris 1 59 42 23
icontact 7.6
tomtom 6
sprite backup
view commander
all working smooth !

FYI: You don't need to push the power button to go into bootloader. Simply hold the camera button and use the stylus to soft reset.
Pezmannen, if you are new the 1st place you should start reading (before attempting to install any cooked ROM) is here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Polaris
-all answers to flashing questions can be found there.
Best feature in this forum is the SEARCH
I don't know how you guys do it deciding which ROM to use. You need b_lls the size of rugby balls. Just reading all the suggestions: And I'm sure you mean well, but it scares me to try.
Good luck!
Brian
i have a mda vario II , its at wm6 now, with a basic rom, i want to update it to the schaps rom, because the things i hear about are really good, i want to try it, 3 questions
1 do i lose my data, (sms data, contacts enz)
2 can something happen so my phone wont work anymore?
3 where can i download the newest dutch schaps rom
my english is not that good, im dutch....
oh yea, another question, do you get your garantee if you send it back to tmobile?
1. yes
2. possible - install hard SPL V7 1st to reduce risk.
3. Do a search to find if its available.
No, you need to put the Stock rom and SPL back on.
thanks for your answers, but can i make a backup with spb backup for example?
and do my programs on the sd micro card still work?
Yes, just don't format the card. Leave it as is and everything should install as it was before. I know SPB backup has 5 trial backup/restores so you may be able to try it without purchase (I have a licenced copy so I don't know if any limitations have been imposed other than the 5 trial backups).
Cheers...
Not to discourage you at all but schapps roms are fairly old now, if you look in the WM06 part of the Hermes forum you'll find some newer roms. Read the description to find out if you like it, then the last few pages to see any problems with and fixes available.
i have schaps installed now, its really great, but it can be done better in my opinion, which custom rom do you recommend me?
I use PDAViet V27 at the moment but also like PDACorner. Roms are a personal choice though, depends what you want it for, how much extra stuff you want in it and how fast you want it to run.
The I said are WM6.1. They are pretty good for me but depending on the 3rd party apps, I found, can become unstable when the apps are installed together.
I use SPBbackup 2.0.1 so if something does go wrong I can re-install a lot of stuff without a great deal of time being spent.
Cheers...
i use spb backup too, but now my programs that i first installed arent in my programs tab, and on my phone by programmabestanden (dutch for programfiles) i can start it tough
If the apps are in you programs filke on the sd card, use Resco explorer or total commander to create shortcuts of the .exe in the windows directory. windows>start menu>programs. Then they'll appear in the programs director of your phone.
For Resco it says "startmenu as shortcut", I have to move the shortcut manually to the programs directory or soft reset will do the trick too.
Cheers...
thankzz
Hello,
how can I backup the original Rom of my I-mate jas jar ?
I am fairly new to this and I want to upgrade from WM 5 to WM 6.5.
Thanks
Regards,
Some one
Welcome to forums
Applications can be stored on your SD card with no problem, and as for your SMS and log calls search for PIM Backup.
WM6.5 is 100% working on Universal but its heavy to run unless you have a modified 128Mb RAM, if not I would recommend WM6.1 (Tomal 8.2, 8.5 and 8.9 ROM´s) as they will be fast and stable.
Instructions to upgrade on my signature link.
Good luck,
Thanks orb,
But I was asking if there was a way to backup my original Wm5 from my phone , I have already backed up the apps and contacts. Now (if there is such a way) I want to backup the actual WM which came with it.
Regards,
some one
If you mean to the ROM this will be wiped out but you can check on my signature link for WM5 ROM to have it.
Believe me once you test WM6 or above you won´t want to go back, unless video call is a must for you
Good luck,
Yes I saw the wm5 in the signature on your link but isn't there a way for me to backup wm5 from my own PPC??
Oh and from where can I get the java midlet manager for wm5 (till I have not flashed my phone ) , I want the cab file of the same one which comes pre-installed?
Backing up and reconstructing the ROM is hard work. There's usually no reason to do so unless you want to cook your own rom. If you can find the version of your rom (probably somewhere in start-settings-system, can't recall exactly where off-hand), you can download the same or a newer version if you want to return to it later. As orb3000 says though, you won't want to unless you really have to make video calls.
