Weird lockups during ActiveSync ? - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

I am a T-Mobile user in the USA and I loaded the new firmware today, and it loaded flawlessly. I could dial, I could surf the 'net, etc. However, after several "weird" lockups, especially during sync, I was forced to go back to my regular firmware. Have any other T-Mobile USA users experienced lockups? I am anxious to try the firmware again, because I really liked the features while it was running -- but I'm going to wait until other T-Mobile USA users have ironed out all the bugs, especially in conjunction with ActiveSync. (Version 3.7, btw.)

I haven't heard of this. My device is more reliable than ever on this version of the ROM, and others using it have told me the same thing.

Yeap the same thing happened to me the first time I installed it but it worked much better after the second install. So try reinstalling it!

Everything works great, until I try to use ActiveSync. After sync'ing it locks up everytime. Only a battery reset will do. I've tried both ActiveSync 3.5 and 3.7, no difference. Any ideas?!

So it locks when you pull it from the cradle? And what do you mean by a battery reset?
Very odd. It started this right after you upgraded the ROM?

Ah, I have a gut feeling here. Do you use ActiveSync via a serial cable or serial cradle?

Problem solved! This was an ActiveSync problem, and not a SE ROM problem! I discovered this by flashing my XDA back to the old ROM, that I had wisely saved on SD before embarking on this journey, and it locked up in ActiveSync also! I realized I haven't done a full sync with my XDA in a very long time, and I had 800+ contacts that seemed to be "choking" the XDA when I dumped it all at once. I deleted several hundred old contacts that I didn't need anymore (from old company), and then incrementally synced them to the XDA and it worked fine. I'm now happily back on the SE ROM and it is working beautifully.

Ah, I didn't think it could be the ROM.
Yesterday I learned a new lesson at a client's office... AS can lock up if a not-so-bright user has put mail items inside the contacts folder.

T-Mobile Vario II official update online

I know it's already been reported before that T-Mobile UK have a new ROM for the Vario II, but T-Mobile have updated their phone downloads site, which now includes updates for the Vario II.
http://tm-phonedownloads.com/
I've downloaded the WM6 ROM and will hopefully give it a try tomorrow. Has any tried it yet? The upgrade notes said something about re-registering Co-Pilot, I wondered if I may have to register my Tomtom software too?
i have tried it but i found iot be a lot slower then the cooked roms. its not to bad for a official upgrade mind.
TRied the update today. Couldn't get it to work. Every time I ran the update, it would cause Activesync to crash and left the device in a mode displaying red, green, blue & white bars. Had to reset each time.
This was on an XP Pro PC using active sync 4.5.
Also tried it on a Vista PC. Same problems.
Afterthe rom updater program crashed activesync, i could restart activesync, and the updater would then get as far as telling me what the old rom level was (1.21.110.3) and what the new level would be (3.60.110.4) and then it would crash activesync again.
I set the USB connection to not used 'advanced network functionality' but made no difference.
Is there some trick to getting the updater to run without crashing activesync?
Thanks for any advice.

You should have the red, green and blue bars but Activesync shouldn't crash. I'd recommend removing Activesync completely, then restart your computer, and install it again. Hopefully that will sort it.
The upgrade went OK without a problem for me. No crashes, etc.
Good luck!

Thats for that tip, it worked a treat! I was running Activesync 4.5. I removed it and installed 4.2, then tried again, this time with no problems. I noted that this time it installed a driver called HTC USB Sync which was unsigned and required a 'continue' in order to install it. That didn't happen before.
Cheers

Questions Regarding BlackBerry Connect

Hey guys,
I've been using SEVEN on my HD since I got it and to be honest it's wonderful, hardly any problems which is great. However I was wondering how it goes up against BlackBerry connect, which is better?
Also do I need any network packages to use it? I currently have T-Mobile web'n'walk basic so I hope it can work with that.
Thanks
Hi O and O,
Well it's good that you like and are happy using Seven as it is indeed a great service IMO, but you can't get BlackBerry Connect for the Touch HD anyway many have tried and none have succeeded so far.
Marc
oh yes you can. i'm using bb connect with my hd since 11.02.2009
It works which is good but which is better for battery and general service? Also do I need anything other than a normal data plan?

Hi there Savagemari. I know the BB connect works since i've gotten it working once. The only configuration this has worked on is Dutty's Rom 1.9b with new radio 1.12.25.56. Now i've flashed various ROMs including Davide's and i'm finally on Dutty's 2.1. No luck.
Could you please tell me what your configuration is?
Savagemari what's your setup? What data plan and ROM version?
Shameless bump!
hi
can you let me know where i can download and install BB connect and how to configure it, i used on my bold but i bought HD and am missing BB connect.
can you please guide me asap.
Im using BBConnect on my HD and it is working perfectly.
Using it for 1 month no issues. Even the BB security locking screen can be swithced off with Memmaid.
(Never used the other program -- BB connect is perfect for my needs to access my company servers)
Using the following versions:
HTC_Touch_HD_BBConnect_WM6_Professional_BB_4_1_.0.0.1062.exe
with BB_desktop_4.0.0.22
Rom is standard:1.14.479.3 WWE

At Last!!!!! I have now have bbconnect 4.1.0.0.106 loaded - It would appear from the file name (exactly as it came from HTC) that this version is specifically for the Touch HD???
I've got an IP address and I've got a PIN and my device has sucessfully registered!!!! I'm fully synced and receiving email in "live" time and my contacts and calendar are also synced!!!! BB Browser is working well as is BB contacts look-up!
I pulled the installation file from HTC South East Asia Website: HTC Touch HD_BBConnect_WM6_Professional_BB_4[1].0.0.106.exe
I've loaded it here on RapidShare for the rest of you that have been waiting for so long to finally add to your HD to make it THE PERFECT PHONE:

PS - for those of you that said that you would pay for this solution can I suggest that you keep your word and donate to charity - I would suggest maybe one of the funds to raise cash to help the victims of the fires in Australia or a Cancer Support Charity if you can? Dear all,
I am having a small problem with blackberry connect on my HD:
I have installed the ...106 client, and I am facing a problem: The phone doesn't wake up when press the power button. Before the installation and activation of the BB client, the power button works normal. After soft/hard reset the power button works again, normal. I have tried with the latest official ROM and some custom ROMs, but the problem is unchanged.

Microsoft My Phone Not Logging In

Hey guys, wonder if anyone could help me out here.
Just recently, my Myphone program on my HD2 won't connect to the microsoft servers. When i try to connect, it says theres no connection or there's a connection problem, even though my wifi or 3g connection is fine.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the cab, and now its stuck on the screen saying 'signing onto the myphone service.
Would just like to get this working again before i reflash my phone to the new 1.66 rom so i can retain the messages i have on this computer.
Any help would be appreciated.
David.
Oh yeah, if anyone was wondering, i'm currently running the 1.48 wwe europe rom.
same here my phone does not log in. is there a registry tweak or a patch?

Personally, I've never had an issue with MyPhone, apart from the occassional service down type issues, but I've been using it for about 8 months now, and that's only happened a few times.
Since you said you can use it over wifi, can you not just do that so you've at least got an up-to-date backup before you flash?
I had this issue the other day. Turns out my clock was set to the wrong date/time. Once I set the correct time, I could log in fine.

So what do you mean by the date /time was set wrong? If itsin regards to what day it is and the right date, mine is currently set to the right times at the moment.
Time/Data stamping is very important to a lot of things to function correctly. MyPhone is one of them.
Just sync your time via the internet sync and try it again. I have used this service for some time now as a few others and I have not had more than an occasional server is down messages.
Don't set your time manually do it via internet/air.

Tried everything that has been suggested but still no good.
Upon closer inspection, it seems when u try to logon, the program does not even seem to even access the data connection, whether it is through WiFi or with an active 3g data connection running. it usually jumps straight onto the error screen or just gets stuck on the logging in screen without any result.
So does anyone think it might be caused due to some registry setting preventing the program from using the connection ?
Getting really fustrated with all this at the moment.
sorry to dig up this old post, but i am having the same situation, did you get it solved? how?
Edit: Found on another forum that connecting thought activesync the first fixes this, it worked.

Hd2 Telstra ROM 1.72.841.0 (82124)

Hi All
I need some help with my HD2.
Today I upgraded from stock rom to latest as version as on HTC website
I can't recall old version, anyway I am having an issue with this radio version which is 2.07.51.22_2
My exchange activesync keeps disconnecting, so my emails are arriving 3-4 minutes later.
I guess my question is?
Can i go back to older radio version without flashing, or worse case scenario could i downgrade to older rom?
I need some help guys.
Thanks
I am downloading now... Will try when down.
I cannot help you there, but have you tried sending a SMS? did you get a stupid notification of message being sent? I am trying to figure out a way to deactive.... No luck yet, waiting for HTC response
As for the Data sync I have had no issue as yet. I have found it a tad more reliable than 1.49. But I have only done a whole 2 hrs of testing

What a pain, so yours work ok, do you use activesync with an exchange server?
That's where my problem is.
It disconnects every few minutes, which obviouslyconsumes more battery power.
As for the sms sent notification I dont mid it.
I may downgrade to original rom, is it safe?
Thanks

Sorry I should have clarified. I link mine with my Exchange 2010 Server. I am getting emails as wanted.
That said I still can't sync SMS. Which is soemthing HTC is looking at and I haven't heard back in a while. I should email them to chase them up.
Hmm, I may try a hard reset tomorrow then.
Thanks

Hi there, having exactly the same issue, did you find a solution to this other than changing out the ROM? Greatly appreciate your posts.
Telstra ROMS on HD2 are stuffed!
I've heard from a mate who works in Telstra ROM development that the HD2 images are not fully tested.. and therefore go to market with communications flaws.. eg every time you try and sync your mail or use as a shared internet device it struggles as the radio version is substandard to the rest of the Image.
Do yourselves a favour.. HSPL it... Find one of the wonderful roms that the guys/gals on here do.. and you will love using the hardware you have purchased. The HD2 is so powerful and should not be ruined by Telstra's lame attempt at a ROM.
Seems they have put way more effort into the Android ( desire ) but its still no HD2.

Yep fixed it, apologies forgot to post solution for my issue.
After trying reflashing with new ROM, downgrading to old ROM and still having same issue, that's right after downgrading...
It clicked, see I bought device and started using activesync after about 2 months.
Before that, I had an issue with my 3G internet connection not working at all.
Weather updates, internet access, hotmail emails etc.
To fix that other issue I had to create a new internet connection.
By the time I got to use activesync I had a new internet connection, I was not using stock telstra connection.
Therefore to fix on new ROM version I created a new connection, and magically started working up to now with no issues.
And it is true telstra are bloody hopeless at testing pre-releasing ROMs.
If you need more information let me know.
Thanks
Would greatly appreciate any help in two areas:
- firstly my HD2 internet stuff is nor working at present. Clicking many of the BigPond links just brings up IE with wap.telstra.com/wap?..... and ends up just sitting there until timeout. Can you post details for setting up new internet connection that fixed this.
- which ROM did you go to. Hw did you load this. I cannot get my HD2 to connetc to Win7 x64 WMDC. Can't even see any mention of the device in the device mgr, though it did say it saw it at ones stage. Reading numerous posts - seems to be a lot of people having issues in this space..

Ok.. have to say, the wap.telstra addresses are all old and many are discontinued. All those apps are simply web shortcuts that should point to a m.bigpond address.
Firstly.. you need to do a few things..
1) You will need to HSPL your phone- ( like flashing a bios ) I just used the hspl.zip.. Instructions are easy and straight forward, make sure you follow them perfectly.
2) Flash your radio to something better i did the 2.10 ( Again.. instructions need to be followed.)
3) I then had a look and found a rom on the forum ( energy GTX ) which seems to have all i want and is fast.. after you flash it.. reboot it.. and it will autoconfigure to the Telstra network.. and BINGO.. FAST Phone!!

Hey there, thanks for this. With the new 1.72 ROM the Telstra inbuild connection set ups seem to work, can browse internet and activesync will connect when I prompt it OK (with 1.49 I had to setup a new connection with Phone line (GPRS) and telstra.wap manually (via the Telstra tech's)). I have two HD2's one running 1.49 (with this manual config) and the other 1.72 with inbuilt Telstra config's - the delay problem u described with email arriving 3 or 4mins later is still happening on 1.72 despite it appearing to connect fine, almost like the message from the exchange server is being ignored. Watching Activesync on the 1.72 when I know there is new email and there is this odd sequence, seems to check and recheck emails 2 or 3 times when just one new email has arrived but doesn't seem to pick up the trigger from the Exchange Server that new email has arrived? Does this delay still happen for you, what connection configuration did you select? Thanks v.much.
I want to know what are the real benefits or improvements on upgrading the ROM on Telstra branded HD2? Because I bought an new, unlocked HD2 from a clearance shop in Melbourne and had been into it for just 2 days. Bening a long time WM user, I got used to it and it really seems to work without any problems at the moment, so does the new ROM brings some dramatic improvements, new and fanastic functions or what? I am not after cosmetic things at all, need to know real benefits comared to old ROM.

Thanks, almost sold on this path at this point given the headaches, was reluctant to head down this HSPL path, is there a good reference for setting up a custom ROM specifically for Telstra's network?
Activesync usually never works with the standard Telstra connection in the HD2 Telstra ROM.
As far as im aware, it is set up to go through a Telstra proxy server, which doesn't allow the Activesync traffic.
You must set up your own stock standard connection to telstra.internet APN. Which bypasses the proxy that they have on their preloaded connection. You will however not be able to use the Telstra internet shortcuts to My Account, BigPond etc, as they require authentication with their proxy server.
So as far as I have found, with the stock Telstra HD2 ROM its a case of either one or the other: your activesync working, or your Telstra links working.

I'd like a response to this too as I'm looking at HD2 Android and need a radio upgrade from for it to run, but don't want to lose Telstra Rural coverage. The HD2 is a great device, but few Winmo6.5 app developments compared to Android or iphone.

Is Usb tethering still working in 2.1?

Hi
Just tried to use usb tethering for the 1st time since 2.1 update.
All still looks like its working but no internet access. Tried under Linux on the same pc that always worked under 1.5
Also tried it on xp although I have never used it on there before I got the same kind of symptoms. Itooks like its all working but no internet, no pings, no nslookup.
So..... can someone try it and let me know if its working for you.
I am on T-Mobile UK. Ota 2.1 update, non rooted, stock Rom.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem. I have spoken to TMob UK support who have not yet managed to solve it.
I'm wondering if they've not set up the phone right in the 2.1 update.
Glad its not just me. I will report it tomorrow as well.
I have a mate with a desire on tmob - will do a side by side with him tomorrow (and confirm his is working) and see if it is just settings - although it feels like a deeper problem to me.
I'll post findings.
Same here - tethering works fine on my Desire, but the missus Hero doesn't work - hoping for some resolution soon
Just moved house so am without internet for the next week, so tethering is bloody useful right about now!
Have put a 2.2 rom onto my Desire and am using WiFi tethering for now, but doesn't help when I'm not in...
If you are rooted, there is an app that works fine.
But custom roms don't have this issue afaik. VillainROM 12 works fine with tether, as I had to use it at work to test external connectivity to a system.
It's an option and one I will look into.
It worked fine under 1.5 and so far its the only thing that us causing me an issue.
T mobile tech support were able to reproduce, and in their testing they found a factory reset fixed the problem - I have confirmed (as has another user over on the tmobile forums).
Gave me an excuse to clear up the rubbish that had accumulated on phone.
All working now.
its working fine for me :/

and me, just done the Orange OTA 2.1 update and tethering works fine on the phone right after the update... if you need to factory reset to get it working it must be something you have installed on the phone.
Or maybe tmobile did something different to orange. Or maybe the radio roms are different.
Was quite a few tmob users and tmob support so if it was a rogue app then it was a fairly common one
Either way. It's working now.
Wish all problems were resolved as.simply.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I certainly think it has something to do with the installed apps on the phone after the update else why would a factory reset solve it, its not the Rom that is the problem... I take it you had heavily customized your phone.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Actually no- 5 apps, lastfm, xda, facebook, ambling audio book reader and handcent sms - restore took less than 5 minutes after factory reset, all contacts and calendar info on google.
Given that the functions like handing out dhcp address worked, it was fundamentally was "all there" I can easily imagine a startup routine that says something like
if file exists "some config file" then leave it alone
else make a new one
When you reboot, config file exists so leave it alone in, when factory reset - file doesn't exist, make a new one.
Perhaps the key thing is I was a heavy user of tethering before the update, perhaps when I did the upgrade I forgot to "stop" tethering and just pulled the cable - can't remember, so maybe I had a config file/param that the newer kernel, ip stack etc. didn't expect to see and didn't handle well.
The key thing about factory reset isn't the rom I agree, the code is the code - but it's the wiping of the configuration and volatile data - something got broken for me, and the guys at tmobile, and about 5 other users who reported the same problem - so whilst it obviously works for some without a reset, equally it didn't for others - for at least 3 of us (2 end users and 1 at tmobile) a reset was needed.
If it was a one off, absolutely agree, it must have just been me/my setup - but it wasn't an isolated case.
Personally, I was surprised when the 2.1 update didn't wipe the phone, I was expecting it - so in my case no real problem once suggested to me - others might have more dependency on the installed apps and config but for me this was an easy fix.
Either way, it's back working now - so if it works without a reset - great, and if it doesn't work, a reset looks to fix it - so great as well.
