So I bought the 4th gen HDX 8.9, aka "saturn", started looking around the forums, and to my surprise there is 0 development for this model. My guess is nobody was willing to upgrade to this device due to the fact there is very little difference from the previous model(couple of hardware upgrades). The only reason I purchased is Amazon gave me a no interest 5 month payment plan to buy. There are probably a lot of members(new members) looking on this forum and thinking their 8.9 is the same as what is being discussed here. There is not enough clear information to distinguish the two models. Now that Fire OS 4 is out there are no prefixes to the system version, ie: xx.4.5.2, it is just 4.5.2 across the board. As an example there is a thread in the QandA, here, where I see people calling the 4th gen "Apollo" and giving suggestions of downgrading or rooting using apollo software versions. NOT COOL. so as a warning:
BE VERY SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE A 4TH GEN 8.9 BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY MODIFICATION (ROOT/DOWNGRADE/SAFESTRAP) PROCEDURES POSTED ON THIS FORUM
Now to get to the real reason for my post. My 8.9 is currently on software version 22.4.5.2(SATURN) with wifi disabled. I would love to work with some other members to get this rooted and open the door for more development. I have tried the new method using the cve apk to no avail. I think it should work since it does on the older gens. And the only difference in the software versions would be hardware related tweaks. But, maybe I'm missing something. Any suggestions?

In terms of hardware only Chipset or to be precise CPU is changed rest all is same i believe...
For rooting try CVE Rooting apk for Apollo to my knowledge that should work & root device.
Due to locked bootloader and efuse your device future is limited to safe strap that needs to be built for your device yet.
There are some developments going on with APOLLO so that can be or should be implied to Saturn as well (atleast with little modifications)

The underlying exploits should still be viable on 4.5.2 for the saturn, the APK probably just needs some tweaking for other devices.
Anyone willing to test it? I just got my new HDX(got Best Buy to take it back and trade it out) and they gave me a Saturn.... urgh...
Same boat
I too purchased a new hdx 8.9 for the no interest payment system Amazon offers. I've been monitoring this forum for a couple of months, waiting for someone to crack into it. If there is any way I can help any devs working on the device/software, feel free to let me know. I have no development experience, but I don't mind testing and what not.
Whatever helps speed this process up.
I am of course running 4.5.3. Fun.

I'm waiting patiently also. tried every method under the sun on my 4th gen Saturn with no success. boy was I pissed when it updated on it's own. using saferoot installs the supersu app but it's not granting apps superuser permissions. tried downgrading etc. my next step is to open one of the rootable updates rename the binary etc. to see if I can trick it into accepting it.
I have a Saturn with "Fire OS 4.2"... Build Date of September 2014... Can I towelroot???
Scratch that, it updated as I was typing that
Anyone willing to tweak the apk? I'd test, but I have no warranty on this new one...

Rooted Saturn waiting for Safestrap
Hi all,
I have an HDX 8.9 4th Gen (Saturn) device that was updated to 4.5.5.1. Rooted with Kingroot following directions in other parts of the forums. I also had an HDX 7 (Thor) that was updated to 4.5.5.1 and also rooted with Kingroot. I installed Safestrap 4.01 on the 7" device no problem and loaded the Nexus 4.05 custom Rom. Buttery smooth works like a charm. I am waiting on the update to FireOS 5 for the 8.9 as Kingroot is supposed to work to 5.1. Real question here is, will any of the fine Devs here be working to update Safestrap to work on Saturn 4.5.5.1 or will they be waiting for the FireOS 5 update, or doing nothing at all? I truly appreciate all the work they've done in keeping these great devices relevant, even if Amazon has not.
Fire HDX 8.9 (4TH GEN) hacks/work arounds
I just purchased a used Fire HDX 8.9 4th gen. from eBay and although it could not be registered with Amazon for whatever reason (lost, stolen, or ?) I hacked it to work as a regular Android tablet with Google Play Store and Alexa access.
NO ROOT REQUIRED
First I upgraded the Amazon firmware to the latest build by downloading it, renaming the .bin extension to .zip and side loaded it with the native Fire recovery. It loaded and worked fine.
Next I installed the Google Play store and related apps and they work fine.
Next I installed Youtub and it works fine.
Next I installed an e book reader (I like eReader Prestigio) and it works fine.
Next I installed a second launcher (Nova Launcher) and deactivated the native Fire launcher using Launcher HiJacker app and it works fine. Boots to Nova fast.
Next I downloaded the the upgrade to the Alexa app for android and it works even without a registered tablet.
Finally I downloaded and installed the Windows 10 application "Debloater" and disabled many native Amazon Fire apps that will not be needed because I use this device to watch Youtube videos, movies, surf the net, and to read and play on-line chess. It is a great tablet when hacked out of the Amazon echo system.
You can do this also .
Goodluck!
Oh the stock camera didn't work but the "open camera app" works fine.

Could you detail which versions you used? I'm assuming you installed Google Play Services before the Play Store. Which versions did you use? Did you have to install anything else before you could proceed to the next step?
Thanks!
I used the Open GAPPS 7.1 Pico
In paper our Nexus player is much more capable than Remix mini and so i was wondering if there has been any work porting the remix os to our device?
When I found out about Remix OS this morning, I had the exact same thought. Sadly, google only turns up this thread, so I guess it hasn't gone anywhere yet.

It says here that it's available for x86 devices - like the Nexus player - but all i can find are some PC based installation instructions here. I'm wondering if it flashes the same way as other ROMS like Lollirock? I'm too much of a newbie to know any more. One good thing to note, however, is that you can purchase a whole 'Remix mini' for just $70!!
I was thinking the same thing but with only 1GB of RAM, the Nexus Player isn't going to like doing multitasking.
(I know they sell a model of their MiniPC with 1GB of RAM but I still think it's not enough to provide a decent experience)
I've been wondering the same for a while. Regardless of the 1GB RAM, I think it would run fairly good for light web browsing. The developers themselves have a device for sale with the same amount of RAM and running Remix OS, so i see no reason for this not to exist
I actually wrote to them and linked them to this page to show that there was an interest for this, bringing up how they've ported it to the Nexus 9 and 10, and they actually replied with
"Greetings from Jide!
Thank you for your Feedback. I have marked it as a feature request. Our engineering team will take care it. Please don't hesitate to let us know, if you need further assistance.
Best,

So there may actually be some hope for this!

Well I'm really hoping for this to materialize. This whole day I've been using the latest beta on my Mac, like for real this time, and this makes way more sense than Android TV in terms of usability and compatibility, is more open and way less limited than android tv.
I've seen a 2.5 mentioned elsewhere, but with 3.X out in the wild now (which our chipset doesn't support...thanks Nvidia) are they still actively working on bug-fixes for the 2.X series or have they moved on?
There are a number of issues that I have with this tablet that, to be honest, are starting to outweigh my love of it and seriously starting to damage my calm. No one glitch is catastrophic on it's own, but little annoyances that add up to a more frustrating experience than I think my money should have bought me. I can live with them if I have to; I can live with being annoyed and learning to work around it's "early adopter foibles" as I've started to call them, but I'm hoping it's still maintained and I don't HAVE to.
ETA - I should also edit it to add that most of my gliches seem to be caused by a less than strong wifi signal. This tablet seems to really really hate weak wifi and will start doing all kinds of funky stuff. Comparitively fewer glitches (though some) when connected to my wifi at home. But a truly frustrating experience as soon as I connect it to my terrible wifi at work)

Jide has your money and that's all about which they care. They have more resources working on free Remix for PCs than they do for the Ultra Tablet. They should rename it the Orphan Tablet.
Can you download the WIFI Analyzer app, please? And tell us what ur signal readings are.

Mouse Not working 100% with Jide Ultratablet
Hi Jide,
I have logged a few calls over the past year relating to my Bluetooth mouse that randomly disconnects from the Ultratablet from time to time and or when the mouse goes into power save mode. When this occurs, the only way to get the mouse to work again, is to un-pair the existing mouse on the tablet, then switch off Bluetooth, then switch Bluetooth back on and re-pair again from scratch. Obviously I do this 15 to 20 times a day because of the mouse going into sleep mode when I walk away from my device. From time to time, also while I am working, it randomly disconnects as well.
I have tested the mouse on my Samsung tablet, with no disconnects. Also have tested it on both a few Microsoft laptops and Apple Mac machines with no disconnects.
I have been told by your support, that they are aware of the issue and working on it. It is almost 1 year later and I still have not been given a resolution. I am on the latest official build.
My question is simple. When will this be fixed? (Can it be fixed?)
It's been the last update we have had in a long time... can anyone confirm? I'm 100% sure it's the last major update unless someone can figure out a way to let us install a different ROM on here.
As far major upgrades (ie. migration from Remix OS 1.0 > Remix OS 1.5 > Remix OS 2.0) we don't foresee one. However, as the below thread is trying to do, we're trying to figure out what bugs are affecting users out there so that we can work on an update that will improve your overall experiences.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/rem...ultratablet-issues-bugs-t3493596#post69679734
Thus far, we're working on:
1. @tomlogan1's issues he shared with us through private message
2. including Android's Nov 1 and Nov 6 security patches that has a fix for the Linux "DirtyCow" issue
3. an audio stuttering issue that is happening for certain audio apps
If you'd like to contribute to the list of issues we're working on, please list them (along with your Remix OS version number) in the thread I shared above. Thanks.

Abandonment implies that we won't even put out fixes, which we're working actively on now based on the feedback that has been given us.
However, again, there is no way for Ultratablet to be upgraded to Remix OS based on Android versions higher than 5.1 (Lolipop). The chip in the Ultratablet is only supported up to Lolipop. There is nothing we can do about that since this is a decision that NVIDIA made for the Tegra 4 chipset. This decision is not something we have control over.
If you do load other versions of Android over Remix OS, the biggest issues are how it responds to keyboard & mouse and how it orientates apps.

You mentioned that there will be no further upgrades to the OS due to hardware restrictions. You also mentioned that you would upgrade the V2.0 software and provide bug fixes, etc. The Mini keeps getting V2.0 upgrades and bug fixes. Please can you provide an estimated time frame when the next upgrade for V2.0 will be released for the UltraTablet?
Hello developers of XDA!
I'm Rox, a Razer Vanguard and i'm here to let you know that the Audio Source is now available for the Razer Phone 2! You can now find the complete source code on the Razer Developers website here
I'm glad you all now have access to the full open source material and we can finally see some movement on the custom development we all know from Android
I would also like to take this opportunity to ask the developers of XDA for some feedback. Is there anything stopping people in particular supporting the device in the community with custom ROM's and Kernels? And is there anything that Razer could do to help?
This is by no means any assurance but I will gather all your feedback and pass it on.
The community is the most important thing to a product and I will continue to raise the communities voice as much as possible.
Thank you so much for the time!

Thanks for the info, I'm waiting for my phone to arrive. I hope to start playing with the ROM very soon.
What's a Razer Vanguard?
It's like their tech support reps, except they're a little more involved. Already dealt with one on their site, and he was very helpful and responsive. Most replies were within just a couple hours. Seems like these guys actually use the hardware they support, and don't treat the users like idiots. Nice to see this, especially since they just laid off most of their phone division. Hopefully this is a sign of better things to come. This phone is a beast.

That is essentially it! Thank you for the kind words, I'll be sure to pass it on to the team. We definitely do use the hardware we help with and for me personally the Razer Phone is my specialty but we all have experience with most Razer products.
I think there are two main things I would like to see:
1. Earlier factory images and the release of ota updates. It would be nice for those who have yet to get pie, for example.
2. Though I realize it's unlikely, the release of the device tree would really be a big boost to rom and kennel development
I second earlier factory image and source releases.
On another note. The sources we have currently had a lot of header/build issues. As other Devs have pointed out(elsewhere) this was probably due to the sources being built out of the device tree but they still seemed weird as I've never seen that before and can't make out how a device tree would have changed that. Would it be too much to ask that some time be taken to scrub the sources better and maybe even have some basic build scripts or instructions? I realize this is contrary to my first point but it's the next best thing to a device tree.
It would be nice to get full android 9 images the same as android 8.1
I still do not understand - why there is no support for aptx, aptx hd, ldac?!!!
And you can't even install it like on most other phones, maby razer developers know how fix it?
Also, due to a strange signature system, most gsi roms do not work.
How about Razer Phone 1?
Now I'm not a gamer, just got a used RP1 from a moderator on the Swedroid forum quite by accident, as it were.
I really quite like it, the Sharp IGZO screen especially, same as on my Xiaomi Mi Mix1, which was the main reason I got it.
I have had zero problems with it so far.

I was informed this is how all new MSM kernels are - they don't build properly out of the AOSP tree (it looks like Android's build system supplies some additional flags to the kernel make system to make it use some prebuilts and AOSP headers over the kernel-provided ones). I don't think this is unique to Razer, since it's a Qualcomm thing.
I've got build instructions for the kernel in my thread too if you need them.
Of course, I could be relaying incorrect information but this does seem like it's typical of Google/Qualcomm to be changing Open Source projects to fit their internal needs...

Can you guys get in contact with CurtisMJ on this forum and see about implementing his amazing Chroma logo alternative app, integrating features of it with the current Chroma logo app, or otherwise allowing us non-root users to systemize it?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/razer-phone-2/themes/beta-logo-oss-implementation-lighting-t3893981
It has a lot of features I want from the Chroma app, but I'm weary of rooting, especially now that Android 9 Pie has come out and no factory images for 9 Pie are on the Razer dev site. If you even wanted to put it in the next update and give users the option of which Chroma app they wanted to use, I'm sure CurtisMJ would think that was pretty neat, though you'd have to ask him. I mean, I'd personally pay to use it if it meant I didn't have to root. Maybe integrate it with the stock Chroma app, and charge $5 to upgrade to CurtisMJ's features, and then split the cash with him. Idk.

I wonder lol.
Interestingly I did see some code in the Chroma app which can grant use of the service to unprivileged apps. I think it was used to whitelist some other Razer component. Just opening up that functionality to users so they can "grant" Chroma access to apps of their choosing might be enough. Otherwise, if I could get a signed stub in the next OTA that'd be cool (and ridiculously unlikely, just to be clear)
Great comments everyone keep them coming!

That's my goal atm to get the developers points of view and requests I'm proud of the community helping each other out so this is my next focus.
So far my feedback list has faster Factory images, and source code, device tree, more Audio Codec (APT-X AND LDAC) and a couple of other things I can't get into.
If anyone else thinks of anything lmk and I'll add it to my list to send on. I hope the right person sees it but again there is zero assurances that any of it will happen but this is where the voices matter.
Thanks again everyone!
Might be a little off topic, but since this is a gaming phone, why can't I pair my old ps3 controller? I even tried an old usb Xbox 360 controller, which a usb host test app successfully found the device. I would have hoped this would have been built in, being a gaming phone and all. I'm on pie and rooted, even when trying multiple previous methods of trying to get something the work, all the phone wants to do is charge the connected device.

Unfortunately the PS3 controller doesn't connect and act like a good Bluetooth or USB device. There is an app called sixaxis controller on the play store that allows you to connect a PS3 controller via Bluetooth, but it needs root and I don't believe it works anymore. There's also an app for wired PS3. It's not a Razer issue, it's a controller issue.

Right, I tested it all. That app gets to the part where it tries to pull the Mac of the phone's Bluetooth adapter and simply can't. I'm leaning more towards the an Oreo/Pie issue. Seems to be driver related.
We use the Fire HD 8 (2018) for our 5yo and after using LineageOS 12.1 for a while, I just checked options again today and found this link on installing 17.1. It even refers to user Kaijones23. I wanted to check what I can expect to work and what not, but I don't find any hint on 17.1 here. Is this legit? Where would I get infos on this? Until now, I always used this forum for infos on unofficial ROMs.
Lineage 17.1 would be great because of the extended Family Link possibilities, but we also need Bluetooth and Video Decoding working.

It isn't stable yet, I have tried it and it has a lot of issues. It is a pre-release beta. 14.1 is fairly stable. 16.0 has issues, and i think he is not fixing them and he is working on 17.1. He is the link to the thread post #338 he sent a link. I am wondering where did you get 12.1? the only 12.1 i have seen was the hd8 (2017) douglas. Just verify you are on Karnak or douglas...

Good catch. You are indeed right. I was right with the year, though, but not with the size. It is a Kindle HD 10, suez.
For that, I only see 14.1, but that lists issues with the camera (which would break talking to the grandparents) and with omx (which might be bad for one of the main puposes).
Looks like development vor the 10 is quite a lot less active

Honestly, 12.1 is fine for now. What he needs works (Kodi, Nextcloud Talk and most apps) and he has hardly any internet access yet, so patches are not that important.
I would only update to Android 10, because as far as I can see, then I could configure that e.g. playing education apps or talking to the grandparents does not deplete his limited time to watch Tom & Jerry
Thanks again.
