How to keep app running on "sif" version? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I developed an app for Android TV devices that runs as a foreground service.
I have noticed that the app keeps running well on many different devices, except the "sif" version of Nvideo Shield TV devices - it seems my app gets killed often.
My app runs well on the "mdarcy" versions.
Is there some modification I need to make to my app to keep it running on thie "sif" version?

25% of Installed apps crash?

It seem that 25% of all the apps I try on the wifi zoom crash and force close. Pandora, slacker, just to mention two.
Is it a Honeycomb issue or xoom issue?
Will it ever get better or are some of the older apps never going to work?
I also have trouble with web sites that have flash video using either the standard browser or firefox.

Everything will work soon - XOOM has been out a month now only and it's the first device with Honeycomb. Samsung, LG and others have announced their own Honeycomb devices and Google has their dev conference (Google I/O) coming up soon which will also help. Like previous years people think they'll be giving out free XOOMs to devs so that will help.
Look at Android - when 1.5 came out you could have said the same thing but now look we're at 2.3 and the apps are plenty. You just have to have some patience and enjoy the ride!
I'll say is more like 45%
Since geting the wifi version on Sunday I been having a lot of fc on apps I use daily. I'm begining to regret selling my archos 101 to get this
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Other than the chrome browser being sluggish and closing when it feels like it, all the apps I have work as intended. This includes pandora. I don't use slacker.
Agree. There still needs to be time given to get the devs up to speed on honey.
Search for the nook version of pandora it works great
Fwiw : the only app that FC on my Wifi Xoom was the XDA app. Solved that by dl'ing tapatalk. All other apps work fine for me. And my browser works fine. Not laggy at all. Only one FC in 4 days of heavy use. Don't know if its hardware, firmware, or the apps and web pages that are different.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I'm getting a lot of FCs too.
what I did is downloaded spare parts and put compatibility mode and it seemed to make apps that fc'ed work make sure and reboot though
Have 117 apps in my drawer, and uninstalled numerous others for random reasons. Only FCs I've had are Facebook.
Only difference I can think of is using ROM Manager to fix filesystem permissions. Always fixed FCs on my phone after ROM switches.
I keep seeing mentions of XDA, but the app has worked perfectly for me from day 1 on my Xoom. Same with Pandora.
All of that aside though, it has been in CONSTANT use, almost every waking moment, since a few days after release.
EDIT: Different critter though, that WiFi thing? I can't say that is true, because these have popped up about 3G as well. Try running the permission fix, if you're rooted.
I get a lot of FC's and it seems like a lot of apps crash.. Def not a good feeling, but the fact that I can do a lot that the iPad can not, i am going to stick with it. I know it will get better.
But in my world, I have gone from old Windows Phones (pocket PC's) Palm OS's to iPhone, to Android, and a lot of other I think.. I mess with all of them, hack them in some way of ROM's outside software or whatever.
I seem to make them ALL unstable, and with that being said, FC's are not new to me. BUT I will say that the Xoom seems like the most buggy, but it's also the newest at time of purchace. witch makes me think that it will just get better, as 3.0.x and 3.1.x etc come out. I am almost sure that Moto will upgrade it.
X fingers!
but no matter what, I hope you and everyone else, keeps supporting the openness of the Android platform!
Other than Facebook and a Bible app, I have had 0 FCs among my 41 apps. ??
Xoom certainly has its issues. They seem more severe than the nexus s issues as far as software stability is concerned. Some legacy apps work flawlessly, others are horrible and crash or generally misbehave. I haven't had any os instability though, just individual app crashes.
This os is a big jump. The devs need to take notice and start building compatibility. A good thing to start with would be adding that one line of code to enable hardware acceleration. Some apps are laggier here than on older android devices. You can tell when that's been added to an application when it's as smooth as butter.
I'm pretty happy with it though. Currently just need to find a good news reader that's not pulse (ie need 2 way Google reader sync). Currently I'm using Newsrob, but it's not optimised for tablets. But at least it runs!

Check out 'NewsR'. It's awesome and the dev is working with me on iterating it pretty fast so it'll get better fast.
I know it's $3 so maybe try it quick since you have 15 mins for refund but you won't be dissapointed. Just keep in mind this is only a second release but he's got an aggressive roadmap ahead.

Facebook replacements?

Hi,
heard that the official app doesn't work that well, so curious to hear if there are any alternatives out there that work properly.
Facobook Touch is working really good in WP7.8. 0.99€ on marketplace.
Generally speaking alternative Facebook-Apps regularly have problems because people's privacy settings affect what data is available to them unlike the official App which is treated the same as the Homepage.
Facebook touch is just a wrapper for http://touch.facebook.com , as far as I know

The official app on WP8 looks similar, but works much better. Its much faster, more stable, and definitely provides a wide variety of features (not all features), and reliable push notifications.
Why the hell Microsoft develop the Facebook app? Facebook develop Android's and iOS. Why not WP? Microsoft is doing an awful job with this app.

Split screen multitasking - how?

Hi,
How to get Nexus 10 to have split screen multitasking like Note2?
Is it possible at all?
Also, can you run apps in windowed mode in Android?
At the moment, I can have browser in a window and video player in a window (super video, but no sound for some reason...), and it would be good if i could have more options like this.
Thanks
That that is a touch-wiz thing. If you want that you might as well get the galaxy note 10.1
Any chance this could be coded into custom roms though?
There's a floating browser app that works quite well. Try searching for that.

It's doable if not very elegant.
LilyPad Chat
BS player

I've tried out a couple floating video apps, and I like Popcorn player the most. Also Floating Browser Flux is an okay free browser.
Multi window support is possible. I suppose it could be built into cyanogenmod. But I bet it would most likely come as a flashable zip, not a built-in feature. It would probably be really difficult to code though. It's not really what most XDA members would be able to do. Maybe we could get the Paranoid Android devs to work on it? They seem like the most qualified to me.
The Nexus 10 is a powerful device. One of the major downfalls with Android is the lack of mulit-window support. The Nexus 10 could become a super functional powerhouse for productivity if we could just get it to display more than one screen at a time.

CM actually tried to implement something very similar Multiwindow in CM9 (look up Cornerstone). Google went Maffia on them and dropped hints that they would blacklist CM roms from accessing the market if they went through with it since there's potential for apps to not work right. They were worried that any issues that arose from such a setup would be blamed on the devs of the apps.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ne-and-bring-true-tablet-multitasking-to-cm9/
Its doable, but its also understandable why devs dont want to touch it anymore. Before that happened, you'd see plenty of unofficial CM builds with cornerstone integrated.
Actually, there's a brand that is developing an app... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOqBAfMwCAc

[Q] Why is my Nexus 7 randomly restarting?

I have a non-rooted Nexus 7 16GB that I just got last month for Christmas. I've realized that from time to time it would just randomly shut off on me and reboot itself showing me that Nexus boot logo. Recently it has been shutting off mostly when I play games. When I played Modern Combat 4 for a good 15 minutes it randomly restarted, making me have to restart a whole entire mission. Now when I try to use Gameboid,(a GBA emulator) and play a few games on it would do the same thing and restart itself again. I have avast! antivirus always running in the background, could this be messing things up? or do I have another issue here?

Turn off Google location services. Worked for me

Odds are that it happening during games is merely coincidental. Random reboots are a known issue with 4.2 and 4.2.1. As has been started before me, turning off location services is workaround until Google comes up with a bugfix update.

Alas, not with the frequency and relative consistency that's been seen with 4.2. The only workarounds for the bug that el Goog inadvertently introduced is to either revert back to 4.1.x or to disable a core functionality of the operating system.
The bug gives the os the overall feeling of beta software, although it is indeed plausible that it did not rear its head during internal testing. It was only after HD Widgets received widespread blame for the reboots that it was looked into and confirmed to be a problem caused by the os itself.

Oh Lord I need to take a deep breath before typing...
So, I never had such problems since froyo until now, with 4.2...
And I do not understand people that say, "oh well, unlock, root, install this ROM, that kernel, download 50 apps to improve your system and to decrease a few problems".
My point is, an OS should be solid. Without having to do a lot of hacking to get it working properly. And it was, until 4.2 ..
I threw Google more than 900€ into their throat.
And all I want is to have a solid system, with at least less flaws that it has now. Everything was fine, and I do understand when apps cause problems, or if android has a few flaws, that's totally okay and understandable. But this? This is pure sh*t.
And it's screwed from Google to let us wait so long for a fix.
I mean we'll see a fix maybe in may, that's it.
And yes, I know this is a hacking forum. And yes I do know that these are nexus devices. But I never heard of a "oh well, you found bugs? Then gtfo and search fixes in xda and other forums" OS.
I don't want to be rude, I may sound so, but I feel like no one understands me. I think people are happy to be abused.
Yes, I don't have 0 problems with rooting etc. I'm pretty familiar with this since 3 years. But I honestly, especially the nexus 7, which is for entertaining purpose, shouldn't require to let xda devs erase the problems.
And yes, Google wants to create normal phones and tablets. Not for devs only anymore. So I don't understand them.
I'm pissed with 4.2, and disappointed.
But I'll stay with android, and just hope that Google doesn't screw up the next update, with a size of 1mb which fixes just the Bluetooth bug...

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I will try turning off my "location services" and see if that will work. I hope Google fixes this bluetooth bug soon I really want to start using my wii-mote for my games.
After buying a new Nexus 7 32GB tablet and experiencing the random reboots I too was feeling let down. I had begun searching and researching for answers and fixes but Google seems to be hiding and remaining mum to the public on this. It seems to be kept low key and not advertised in the media much compared to so many actual users reporting the rebooting issues on all nexus devices.
Anyway, in my analysis thus far of the cause of the reboots (from viewing my own devices debug crash logs) it seems that the random resets and rebooting issues are caused by incompatible apps. That is apps that were developed and designed under older previous versions of Android OS that are not quite 100% running correctly on the latest Android OS' v4.2.x. When the app happens to reach a point where it passes an argument (variable) in the wrong way or wrong place, then the OS errors out, crashes and reboots itself to clear things up. This in itself is a flaw in the Android OS design where it should have caught the error condition and handled it gracefully instead of crashing the entire OS and rebooting. Thus, Google developers must fix the spots in the OS where these error conditions are occurring and wrap them in a java try{} catch{} block to catch the error and terminate the offending app cleanly rather than passing the error all the way up the chain to the critical OS error handlers that will reboot the system,.
I have noticed that a hacked winamp pro app was causing random reboots on my Nexus 7 tablet. I have removed that app now and will see what other apps might show up in the error logs if I still get random reboots. My advise based on what I found out so far, is to try removing apps until you find out which apps were causing your reboots. It can be any old app, so we all have to isolate which old apps are not behaving well on new v4.2.x OS.
Update: I also posted more updated info of my findings in the Nexus 10 forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998496&page=23
Where I suggest an idea to Google dev team how to fix this random reboots issue.

This is another thing.. In the play store, there's like 10 apps which actually are really build for and updated to 4.2.. I even think a lot of devs still build on gingerbread ^^

The format of "The Beast" looks weird

Has anyone else noticed the formatting of the beast looks very weird and words are cut off/not aligned properly on the shield tv? The home bar with all the tabs is in the middle of the screen rather than the bottom like on other devices. I spoke to my buddy who uses beast on multiple devices and he is having the same issue on his shield tv but not any other devices. I will upload a pic to show how mine looks. Are we installing something incorrectly?
