Flashing custom ROM "Operation not permitted" - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

Hello,
So basically, I got an OTA update today for my EvolutionX custom rom and I've installed it. Afterwards I got a boot loop.
Turns out, that for some reason, no matter what recovery I use, after the flash is done and recovery states "Updating partition details..."
I get a bunch of errors:
Error opening: '/sth/sth' (Operation not permitted)
Same thing happens if I try to wipe Cache or Dalvik through the recovery.
I've found some threads related to the issue, such as this one, but nothing helps.
I've tried several different versions of both TWRP and OrangeFox, no avail.
I can't roll back to previous ROM version because apparently it disappeared from EvoX website (it was EvolutionX 5.8, this one)
Any clue?

As far as i kniw newest evox is 7.3 and uses 4.19 kernel. It needs special recovery handle 4.19

Could you link me the aforementioned recovery handle? I can't seem to find anything
If you mean the one included in the EvoX zip then it doesn't work.

Update: Flashing the old ROM did not work.

Update2: I've managed to restore the OS by wiping data completely...does not fix the encryption issue in recovery however.

Rom.zip not installing on any twrp version

So i was swapping roms: i booted into twrp, cleared cache and data and flashed my rom ( ResurrectionRemix-M-v5.6.0-20151213-wt88047.zip ) and Gapps.
i noticed flashing RR took just a minute and returned this message:
"unmount of /system failed; no such volume
script succeeded: result was [0.200000]"
after that the Gapps package flashed with no problem, but my phone does not boot properly.
Edit: i also tried different twrp versions, but i got the same result with each of them
It does still boot to fastboot, but i wasn't able to get into android.
i read something about cf.lumen drivers causing this kind of error while swapping roms, but i don't know if they were there in the first place or how to uninstall them.

Good night, try to flash miui. Then install twrp 3-1 and ROM. But first go to the Lineageos tag and download the modem and flash. Then try ROM again.
I had MIUI installed before the Rom flash, and i was using fastboot ti boot into twrp without actually flashing it.
I eventually solved my issue by flashing a different rom, so i think the one i was using was corrupted or Just bugged.
Thanks for the support.

Stuck in bootloop trying to flash 7.1 custom rom

My phone is android 6.0 and I've been using "TruPureXMM 2.9" ever since it first came out. I have a February 1, 2016 android security patch level and my system version is 24.11.18 clark_retus.retus.en.US retus
I had an older version of twrp so I just updated it to the latest one before attempting this ofc...
I tried flashing the latest RR and AICP and both give me boot loops and I always get this one problem where it says
"mount: failed to mount /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name
/modem at /firmware: Device or resource busy"
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the bootloop though...
Going to recovery after seeing the bootloop I always get the "keep system read only?" prompt where i swipe to allow modification but i usually just restore back to my backup from there... i dont think allowing it and trying to boot again will get rid of the bootloop...
I followed the process of first doing a full wipe with twrp > flash rom > flash gapps > restart system
no idea what i'm doing wrong..

1st - you need twrp 3.x+,
2nd - full wipe - format data, adv.wipe - all without micro sd.
3rd - flash rom, flash gapps(opengapps.org, ≤mini, arm64, 7.1)
Last Rr is for Nougat modem - you are on MM modem.
Flash RR 21.11.2017.

The first 3 steps I've already done that since the beginning
Where can i get the nougat modem/is it possible to update to it? I guess that's the reason every single 7.1 custom rom I tried in the android development section gave me boot loops...
And could you link the 21.11.2017 version of RR? I'm looking at the download links for RR and I dont see one with that exact date
edit-just saw your edit
Custom roms for MM modem works better.
I fully wiped using TWRP, checked everything I possibly could except my micro SD card and I flashed RR-N-v5.8.5-20171121-clark-Final.zip then gapps arm64, 7.1 nano and it's still giving me boot loops. I'm using TWRP 3.2.1-0
im gonna try using gapps arm64 7.1 mini really quick since you said I should use that one and see if it boot loops... - Edit guess I was too optimistic thinking this would fix it
Bugs probably after flashing december RR.
Change twrp to 3.1.x, reboot twrp, change all partitions to ext4 - adv wipes - One by one - cache, system, data, reboot twrp.
Change back to f2fs - only cache & data, wipe all, flash what I wrote.

changed to 3.1.1-0 and did everything you said, still have boot loop...
when flashing this RR i still get this, not sure if it's a problem but thought I would just let you know

It doesn`t matter.
Try another custom - LOS f.e.
If bootloop still will be - you should flash full stock.
Last MM for RetUs

I tried crDroidAndroid-7.1.2-20171119-clark-v3.8.3.zip and it still boot loops :\ I also already tried LineageOS and AICP before we started talking
I went back to my backup and it put me in a bootloop which never happened before but changing cache back to ext4 instead of f2fs fixed it..

A little late to chime in and this does not help with your current situation, but here's a little advice. I flash a lot of ROMs (how else am I going to test builds right?). This error happens all the time, BUT if you flash a ROM twice it should not show on the 2nd flash.
So flash order goes:
Wipe/Factory reset
Format data x3 (yes I format my data 3 times for every ROM)
Reboot
Wipe/Factory reset
ROM
ROM again
GAPPS
Wipe caches
Reboot
Do the Initial setup
Reboot before use
OPTIONAL Kernel (if its not already build in)
OPTIONAL Magisk (I never flash Magisk on a clean build but heck I'm expecting a NON boot most of the time anyways)
At this point I would flash the stock Nougat image via fastboot to get the device operational again... Then look at TWRP, root, or custom ROM.

so should I just straight up flash the nougat image via fastboot from your thread here? https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/general/xt1575-moto-x-pure-edition-factory-t3704142
i dont need to go back to mm stock or something first? I don't really have much knowledge about this.

Correct... And verify everything is working properly before you flash TWRP, root, or take any OTA update.

Boot TWRP (don't flash it) and make a full back, and I would recommend not talking any OTAs either.
Then knock yourself out... You can always get back to this state if things go badly.

I'm not sure for others but RR - only 5.8.5-04.12 works with N modem.
Did you check/set access points properly?
All customs for N modem(I think) have problems with notification sound, so you can stay at stock.

I'm using t-mobile and I've checked the access points, clicking on the one im using and hitting save doesn't fix it. Always getting a notification telling me to sign in to network. Not sure what else I can do. I'll give it a day since I had this kind of problem before when I switched sim cards and data didn't work until the next day
Edit - just went back to stock and my data doesn't work now either... just going to stay at RR now and hope my data fixes itself because my access point settings for tmobile should be correct since I looked it up on the official website..

flashing firmware zip fails every time

I am currently using a OnePlus 5 which used to run on a stock based rom, xxxNoLimits v3.1
Since the dev ended the support I wanted to revert back to pure OOS, so I downlaoded the newest 5.1.5 zip and followed the instructions using the newest blu_spark twrp recovery but right after pressing the "flash" button I kept getting error 7, so I download the zip from a mirror link and I have also tried the newest version of codeworkx twrp, still error 7. Then I tried flashing the original stock recovery in order to flash the zip but it instantly threw me back to the zip selection menu, flashing the zip via adb sideload kept quitting at exactly 47%. At this point I was pretty frustrated, I flashed twrp codeworkx again and wiped EVERYTHING, which includes the system, data, cache, dalvik partitions and then I also did a format on the data partition, the point was that now I would have a clean phone only running twrp and I thought I could easily flash the newest zip now without any problems, NOPE, still error 7!!! Now I am stuck here, the stock recovery doesnt let me flash anything and I've tried 4 different versions of twrp recoverys and every single one gives me the same error, I even dug up an older version of OOS, I think it which I had running for a few weeks without any probles so I knew that the zip was not corrupted but same error
Now I had given up and wanted to restore the backup I did just in case anything goes wrong, well, restoring the backup fails when it tries to restore the data partition, so I unchecked everything except system, system image and recovery but it didnt work, now I am sitting here with my phone telling me that there's no OS installed. any advice?
Use Unbrick Tool and Restore
Hey,
You can Flash your Mobile using the Unbrick tool at - https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=204903
Use the Latest file which I guess comes with OOS 5.1.3 - https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=962339331458999196
If you try to Go to Open Beta ROM First Flash Open Beta 12--> Open Beta 13 --> Open Beta 17

I've tried like anything i've found and even more, but nothing did the job ...
The only way to have my OP5 working is downgrade to an old version running Android 7.1.1

I installed this recovery for bootleggers 8.1 rom,

then I've installed Orangefox recovery for try and I used for long time without any problem,
later I flashed this recovery for Pixel Experience rom

installed without a problem but a long time stuck in google logo, I rebooted three times a long press power button and the phone opened normally
No problem when using the phone but all times error on recovery.. such as 'vendor, invalid argument, mount error.
Always these errors during the rom installation and wiping..
Now is stock rom installed, I think there are some changes in the new rom because such problems did not happen before,
thank you for your answers and developers

Okay... I'd recommend one thing.
Install the custom ROM. Then follow flashing procedure and do read the new FAQ posted by the devs. And after that... Try to reflash the recovery.img by pressing install image option. After this... If the problem persists, try to follow the procedure again and check if your recovery image isn't corrupt. Plus don't use the recovery from TWRP.ME
I have a recovery that can solve this problem but you can't restore ROMs you backed up

If you want to install latest update roms then read this FAQ:https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77872447&postcount=2325:confused:
if you want to revert to old roms then you have to flash stock nougat rom using qfil and install twrp 3.2.1.0 and install old roms
don't do it wrongly otherwise you will get updater error 7 or can't mount vendor, etc,

The thing is with new twrp there is decryption support which was lacked in old. Vendor partition is present in both i think. All the new roms are encrypted by default

Problems updating from 5.1.7 to 9

Hi,
I have a rooted OP5, running 5.1.7 and TWRP. I used Oxygen Updater to download the new android 9 ROM. I tried to install via TWRP, but got an error about zip compatability & a treble problem. I found a thread stating that I needed a newer TWRP to fix the treble problem, so I installed TWRP_3.2.3-Pie_siankatabg_OP5 , which said it had Pie support, from here:
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=1322778262903996029
That worked fine, but when I tried to flash the 9 ROM, I got still got the same error. Another post said to remove compatibility.zip from the ROM zip. I did that, and it now installed, but it wouldn't boot. Re-flashing 5.1.7 booted fine. I tried another TWRP - twrp-3.2.3-0-20181227-codeworkx-nocompatcheck-cheeseburger from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...overy-twrp-3-2-1-0-oreo-oxygenos-5-0-t3725723
That installs, and boots to system, but won't boot to recovery, so I can't install the 9 ROM.
Any ideas where I go from here to upgrade to 9?
Thanks!

Hi, I got Pie to install with TWRP_3.2.3-Pie_siankatabg_OP5 on my device.
Go to this link:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78523940&postcount=13
And follow my post on the part where it says:
" Notes for the Pie update: "
Let us know if those steps work for you. The firmware is linked to on there, pre-modified. Try flashing that pre-modified zip and see if your device boots.

Thanks!

It sounds like you did not follow the detailed flashing instructions in the first post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/official-oxygenos-4-5-2-7-1-1-ota-t3627003
Is your device storage encrypted or decrypted? Have you flashed magisk? Have you used an older magisk(your end link leads to my post where I mention that)? Have you downloaded the rom file without compatibility.zip or did you removed it on your own?

Thanks for the links both, but still no go. I was on Magisck 17.1, uninstalled Magisk with the latest uninstaller, flashed the ROM with compatability.zip already removed. Same result as before - I get the oneplus logo, then it just reboots instead of starting the system. I've only wiped cache & dalvik, I don't really want to wipe more than that if I can help it - it is worth trying a system/vendor/data wipe? I recovered by flashing back to 5.1.7 (also updated to Magisk 18 while I was at it).
Any more ideas? One thing I find a little weird is that I'm on the @siankatabg TWRP, when I tried either the bluespark & codeworx TWPR, I couldn't get into recovery with either, I just got a blank screen with a LED staying on light blue. Only the siankatabg recovery works. Surely any of them should work? Does this point to a problem?
I'm not sure what you mean by encrypted or not - I get messages about unencrypting when going into recovery, which I assume means I am encrypted?
THanks!

Maybe try backing your device up, and then locking the bootloader. Try updating with stock recovery on a locked bootloader. If that works, you can then unlock the bootloader and copy your data back

Please use an older recovery like twrp-3.2.3-0-20181031-codeworkx-cheeseburger.img the actual pie recoveries require pie firmware(mentioned in last post of blue spark thread for example).

OK, I understand now - if I use an older TWRP, or the siankatabg version, it works fine. I can then flash the Pie ROM, however it still won't boot - I get the oneplus logo, then it just reboots. However having done the Pie flash, I can then flash the more recent TWRPs (codeworx or Bluespark), and can now get into recovery fine. However Pie still won't boot - I've even tried re-flashing the Pie ROM from within the newer TWRPs, but the result is the same - it gets to the oneplus logo, then reboots. At this stage I guess wiping system/vendor/data is the only way forwards?
*Edit* - OK, so wiping everything fixed the issue, I'm now on Pie. Flashing Magisk didn't work when flashing the ROM, but I'll try again once it's finished downloading all my apps etc.
