SM-G950W Update Problems - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have a Samsung Galaxy SM-G950W device and I have been trying to update it since 2018 but no luck. It’s still running Android 8. And the patch update from 2018.
It won’t let me update within the settings, and have tried to flash the firmware multiple times, but I always get the Device Info error (with multiple different files)
Does anyone know maybe what I am doing wrong or what I can do to update the device to a newer version (9.0)

Try to download firmware from https://samfw.com/firmware/SM-G950W and flash with odin

I have tried but it fails each time

you must download one that is superior to binary 5 you have 4. it may be that

What I had to do Was Turn On USB Debugging because it turned of, then put the PIT file in which I got from the CSC extract, run it with the new BT and the PIT file and then do the whole package and it worked

[Q] Odin failed flash N910FXXU1BOC3 Volume size too big

I have tried to flash the Android 5.0.1 stock firmware N910FXXU1BOC3 on my Note 4 N910F and I'm getting some error in Odin when it's writing the hidden.img.ext4 and failing. On the device, in Download Mode i see the error message volume size is too big.
Right now i'm on Android 4.4.4 N910FXXU1ANK4.
First thought was that i left Reactivation Lock on and saw a bunch of other threads where it says that this might be the main issue as I am flash a different CSC Region ROM. I managed to get back to N910FXXU1ANK4 after the failed flash of N910FXXU1BOC3 with Kies3 and Emergency re-initialization (thank you Samsung for finally doing something useful with Kies). I disabled the reactivation lock and attempted again to flash N910FXXU1BOC3 but failed with the same error.
After some searching, i found that the issue might be because i have to re-partition the device in order to fit the new partiton sizes for Android 5.0.1.
This should be done with the Odin option to Re-partition but that requires a PIT file in order to have the re-partition information.
I have looked into the md5 archive for the N910FXXU1BOC3 ROM and initial 5.0.1 release for N910F N910FXXU1BOB4 ROM but I could not find a PIT file in order to re-partition.
Now my question is, when going from Android 4.4.4 N910FXXU1ANK4 to Android 5.0.1 N910FXXU1BOC3, do I have to re-partition with Odin, and if so, where do I get the correct PIT file ?
Thanks.

hi,
i have a N910F.. When i went from stock Android v 4.4.4 to Lollipop .. German Rom.. BOB4 and after that again to BOC3 I did not repartion anything. in fact repartion must be untick , I only made sure that auto reboot was ticked and F. Reset Time ticked then, place the tar/(md5 )file in AP section of Odin. Switch phone off, boot into download mode, connect phone via usb and wait for blue color to light up ID:COM box (above auto reboot) check if everything is connected and correct boxes ticked and then flash.( see screenshot ) After flash your phone will "try" to boot up but will optimise apps first. This can take some time (my case about 10 min? or so)
Plse take note that i am referring from stock Rom v4.4.4 to stock Lollipop
v 5.0.1 Also you only flash the one file....... "tar"/(md5 ) thats all.
good luck

hi ,
i personally , don't think it will make any difference or matters,
if you flash the one or the other ..but hey ..who knows ..?
Only reason ,i flashed BOB4 as it was the first Lollipop available and BOC3 was a later date ( March 2015 )
good luck
I have the similar issue. KK and BOB4 roms work and install perfectly. however I am having the same issues while installing BOC3 rom be it Stock or Custom.
So I finally managed to solve the issue. Seems that the image I was downloading from Sammobile was not that good.
I was trying to install N910FXXU1BOC3_N910FVFG1BOC2_CNX - Romania Vodafone. I was unable to install it no matter what I tried.
I was able to install N910FXXU1BOC3_N910FTPD1BOC1_TPD - Netherlands unknown, without any issues.
Something that i noticed is that when loading the tar with issues in Odin, total binary size was shown as 0 mb, while on the Netherlands tar file it was showing 3.3gb.
Also the tar sizes where a bit strange : RO CNX 3.6gb - NL TDP 3.4gb. So I would imagine that extra 200mb might be an issue for the partition size (suspecting bloatware maybe?).
Long story short, the tar file I was trying was the issue and downloading a different CSC file solved this for me.
Also, I tried an advice from the forum, where you extract the recovery.img and convert to tar and first flash that tar before the ROM, but that did not work in this case.
Thank you for the replies and support.
Does it void the warranty ? I am also on 4.4.4 ANK version and want to update fo 5.0.1 BOC3.
Sent from my SM-N910F using XDA Free mobile app
I installed the BOB4 like said willcor and do an antutu and, I know that it are subjective information, but I was exhausted of see the Meizu above our fairy note 4 (including with the last 4.4.4), but now, I will sleep much more well than yesterday...

If you're talking about knox (hehe of course, what else) knox still 0x0 after installation...
Doing this kept my knox counter at 0x0, but I did not root or install any custom recovery.
Slightly off topic but I would stay away from BOC3. Many people I know have had problems with BOC3 Firmware.
I am going to be re-flashing BOC3 when I get back home... I must admit when I flashed BOC3 I didn't do a fresh wipe before flashing it so might have been my problem.
Have you wiped your phone before flashing the firmware?

Yes, I wiped from the recovery before and after the BOC3 upgrade and I must say that I like how BOC3 feels.
Battery life feels about the same for me - 50% when I get home (9-5), considering i have BT on all day as i have a smartwatch paired, exchange account, 3 gmails, skype push and a few others.
Love the new Smart Lock features with Trusted Places an On Body Detection.
One thing I noticed, manual check for updates on Security Policy Updates does not give any results, not sure if that is working correctly.
I tried rooting my galaxy j7 with Odin and the feedback I get Is binary size too large
Kindly help me out

new to odin & flashing. some info needed

Hi,
I have an S7 edge olympic edition straight from the games in Brasil.
It hasn't received any updates since September whereas ZTO Brasil has released multiple updates since then, as well as my provider (Proximus - Belgium).
The CSC code is G935FYTO1BPIF (notice the Y instead of the standard Z).
I'd like to flash the latest 6.0.1 firmware for Belgium - Proximus, but am afraid to brick my phone.
Can anyone tell me which steps I should follow? I found on this forum for example to not use the repartition option in Odin. But in another tutorial they indicated to activate it. Do I need to change some files or not (CSC_Home),...?
Also the multi csc firmware stuff only adds to my confusion.
Bumping the thread. I'm not flashing anything on my phone until I have a decent answer from you guys

1)You can flash stock firmware for you specific device and country using sammobile.com as a free member registration* Remember to download latest stock firmware for your specific model number and country, you can find your model number printed below on back panel of your phone*
2)Go there in firmware section and enter your device model no and country..( Save it to pc and extract it on your pc in particular firmware folder, you will now find tar.md5 file in that folder)..Now download latest versions of odin and Samsung usb drivers for your device( Extract those files as you did with firmware, install latest usb drivers on pc)
3)From your phone's setting>about device>software info>press build version for 7-8 times continuesly to enable developers option
4)You can find developers option below setting>about device..From developers option select oem unlocking and usb debugging enabled
5)Now connect your phone to pc in download mode( Press volume down+home+power button simultaneously, you are now in download mode..press volume up button to continue)
6) Run odin as device administrator on your pc from odin extracted folder, let pc to install device drivers and your device will be highlighted in odin..
7)Add previously extracted tar.md5 file of stock firmware in AP tab of odin, give it some time to be ready..In odin options let auto reset and reboot options checked..*Dont check repatriation option*
8) Now click start button in odin, flashing process have been started..Sit back and relax untill firmware is being flashed..After that your device will be automatically rebooted and you will have latest stock firmware on your device..
*DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK NOR I NEITHER ANYONE FROM XDA FORUM WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OR BRICK OF YOUR DEVICE*
You can use SamFirm for free and high-speed download of Nougat (Model: SM-G935F, Region: PRO). Since you do want to change CSC for best experience in Belgium you can just use the set you downloaded and flash with Odin (a factory reset will be performed, use the standard CSC not the HOME one). There's no need to flash as admin or set OEM unlock. Keep in mind all olympic specific goodies won't be available afterwards anymore.
Just to put things clear: it doesn't matter which firmware I download as long as it's for an SM-G935F with exynos processor.
I do not use CSC_Home but the normal csc file and afterwards I have a standard s7 edge, correct?
And the chances of bricking it are quite low using Samfirm?

Yes, as long as you use a firmware for the Exynos S7 edge and flash it with Odin chances are towards zero to brick something.
The HOME_CSC is only relevant if you flash something with same CSC as already installed as you do not have to perform the mandatory reset then. This is, however, not your case.
Where you get the firmware is up to you, there's fw.updato.com where you can download from Google Drive (you need to use a trick if Google thinks there's too much traffic), there's sammobile.com (fast download costs money) or SamFirm (still works despite being deprecated). However, all three options are basically maintained by the same team.
Thx for the answer.
As samfirm is deprecated and there seems to be a problem with the fw.updato.com I'll go for the sammobile option.
Leaves me with the question: which options to use when flashing via odin?
I suppose droidhacker's guide is the one to follow: In odin options let auto reset and reboot options checked..*Dont check repatriation option* And with repatriation I guess repartition is meant Can you confirm this?
EDIT: if you're saying 'same CSC', that means from the same carrier? Does this mean in theory that I can flash any other Brasil (ZTO) firmware - which would then be a default s7 edge firmware, but without having to reset my phone? The CSC codes that sammobile mentions are each time different per fw version
Code:
Date Country Version PDA CSC
2016-12-29 Brazil 6.0.1 G935FXXU1BPLB G935FXTO1BPK3

You click BL, AP, CP and CSC and select the appropriate file (for AP ist may be that it seems Odin hangs but just be patient as this is the biggest file to be read). If device drivers are not installed you need to install them, too. Put the phone in download mode (Switch off, then Vol down+Home+Power together and confirm with Vol-Up). Connect your device and click "Start".
I do not adjust any other settings (Options Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time is ticked by standard, Pit tab is not used). The Re-Partition does not matter in case you plan a reset or need to do so it just should NOT be ticked if you want to keep your settings (along with matching HOME_CSC). This is based on Odin 3.12.5 from odindownloader.com.

Thank you for the clear answers and the help provided. I'll give it a try tonight.
It's basically fairly easy... if any questions just post here. (-:
I'm on UAE firmware can I flash just another county's CSC? I'm in India. Or do I need to flash the whole firmware? Is there a way to flash CSC without a factory reset?
*have been asking all these for a long time in different threads and not getting a reply please help me out *

Can't Update or Flash Firmware to Galaxy S8

I have a Galaxy S8 SM-G950U on Verizon.
In March I flashed my phone with the following ROM so I could get the S9 messanger,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/rom-pixelish-s9-rom-custom-snapdragon-s8-t3766891
Everything worked for a few months, including system updates. But as of roughly two months ago I am unable to install any system updates, they always fail. The rest of the phone works fine, its just the updates.
I have tried to use Smart Switch to install the update through my PC, but the process would freeze after downloading the update. The same happened when I tried emergency software recovery through Smart Switch.
I also tried using Verizon's software update utility to both update and recover the phone, but the program would freeze just like Smart Switch.
I have also tried flashing both stock firmware and re-flashing the ROM to the phone with no success. I have tried flashing with the following 4 versions of Odin:
- Odin3-v3.12-PrinceComsy-
- Modded Odin v3.13.1 Raymonf
- Odin3 v3.13.1_3B_PatcheD
- Odin3_v3.12.3
No matter what version I tried, Odin would either outright fail or freeze at either "SetupConnection" or "Intializing". I tried plugging my phone into both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports. I was very careful to get the correct stock firmware for my phone. I downloaded the stock firmware from both sammobile.com and samsung-firmware.org
I also tried simply restting the phone to factory setting both from inside Android and from Recovery Mode.
Does anybody have any clue what might be causing this and what I can do to fix it?
I really dont want to be stuck with a phone that can't get updates.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 System software not authorized by ATT has been found

Got a huge problem with a AT&T phone Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Got it from an ebay handler. It was supposed to be rooted. However, after installing Magisk software (https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445) I got the message "System software not authorized by ATT has been found on your phone". Whenever I turn it on, I see it and the phone doesn't start. Since more than 6 months have passed, the ebay handler declined to help. I called AT&T, but since the phone is rooted, they declined to repair it even after I offered to pay. There are some solutions I found online for other samsung galaxy models, but none which works for note 4.
Tried to restore the system to the factory version, it said that restoration has been successful, but I still see the AT&T message.
I followed the instructions to unbrick the phone by reinstalling the firmware - the method that should work for all phones (not just note 3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv_NCfYemEs with the firmware for SM-N910A , however no matter how long I waited, the download process never completed.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Grab latest firmware for N910A from here
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=745425885120746376
Make sure samsung usb drivers are properly installed on your pc before you begin.
STEPS
1 Download odin and Firmware and Extract it.
2 open odin tool and upload firmware in AP slot.
Odin can take up to 5 minutes to upload firmware so be patient
3 put phone into download mode
4 connect phone via usb cable and hit start.
5 After FLASH once odin shows pass boot into stock recovery by pressing 3 button combo volume up+ home+ power.
6 in recovery do wipe cache+ wipe data factory reset.
7 reboot system and wait 10 to 5 minutes.
DONE
Trex888 method should be good, however you may need to find the pit file and flash it before odin back to stock. I bought my note 4 already rooted, but the person that did it used the wrong files to flash. Mine was good but buggy. The rom flashed was not verizon, and it locked out some partitions including the one where the imei was held. I had to fix the partitions with the pit file then reflash to a different rom and i was good to go after that.
Thanks
Thanks for the reply! Great! I will try that - very hopeful

You dont need dedicated pit file unless your device has errors such as "dm verity verification failed" or failed to mount cache/efs etc etc.
If stock rom flashing by odin went smoothly no require for repartition or pit file.
Playing with pit file and repartition is extremely dangerous and can cause device to hard brick so i would not recommend unless some serious issues with device.
Fyi every samsung stock firmware has pit file in the system image by default and odin take advantage of it by it self during flashing.
Have a nice day.

in my case, whoever flashed my phone flashed an f file instead of the v file. It lost the imei and would not recognize a sim card. I tried flashing original firmware but the imei was still gone. The ONLY thing that saved mine was to find the correct pit file and flash it before firmware. It fixed my issue and got me back up and running. every original fw flash for me failed until I flashed just the pit. I cannot explain why the original fw included in the odin package would NOT work. Hence the statement of "you may need to" instead of "you will have to".

an error occured during software update!!! HELP

i boot up phone and see an error occured during software update!!! now smart switch doesnt recognizing, i connected to odin, in AP i put file G903FXXU.md5.tar but failed! can someone give me 4 files? BL PDA PHONE CSC? imei not random gone when i flashed with 4 files??
I bet you have corrupted system files. There are many websites that provide the recovery files (including .pit file) for free. I suggest you to flash one of your choice with first four options turned on (reboot, nand erase, repartition, and reset time). It has nothing to do with your imei. This will solve your problem and you'll be able to flash any newer firmware you want. PM me with your storage if you can't find the files. I can upload either Austria or Germany one for your g903f.

Your stock .tar.md5 is not meant to be used when you're downgrading. You may want to consider using twrp. Follow my guide above as a last resort. Basically it'll wipe out everything and roll back from BRH2 to the old version you choose so that you can start fresh. You repartition only when .pit file is used.

i put old version security patch but same 6.0.1 android version which i had on previuosly version when i did not install from ota update when i got the phone, but cm fail because binary number is lower. i had G903FXXU1BQL1 this version before update via ota. but from odin . why re-partiton automatic marked??? i saw when i flashed succesfully to bhr2 . i dont know why is ticked automatically... my phone not bricked up?? everythings would be ok?? phone booted up, but two times was in recovery screen entered and restarted two times samsung s5 logo and recovery mode, after that screen shows s5 neo and booting without the problem. i cant install previuosly android version which was be on phone when not uptated to security patch 2018 04 01 , i had 2017 december, after that when failed odin i installed the same version like what i had installed via ota. i dont know the same music apk was on preinstalled previuosly version on security patch 2017 december 1 th was . on the software was music stock apk like in photo which i more like it because on lockscreen was green backround not the white and rounded play ant back buttons, and from status bar same as looks like lockscreen. i dont know maybe the same app version was when i uptaded to the latest android version via ota when i got the update when was be on patch 2017 . but in my imagine was music stock 1.5 version but not 6.0.1 when i did reinstall fw via odin!! now changed to 6.0.1 apk music version. i found on internet the picture how should icon was on december 2017 patch without update samsung music, just stock music app. and maybe after ota update still the previuosly 1.5 version on april 2018 security patch.. i dont have any screenshots where music app was be without updated samsung music app when i had via ota uptaded version to bhr2 as same version as a flashed via odin.. how can i install lower security patch? is required pit file or twrp ? i dont do that to lower version security, because binary number is not the same. i try in a5 2016 to security patch when not changed binary number to 7. was 6 . when 6 was i can installed to february month via ota and roll back as the same file to october security because the same binary number , when i got updated and month changed to may i cant installed that version which i had until may updated security patch because binary changed to 7 with update. maybe you understand what can i say in my opinion about a5 2016 from october 1 update to every month until may i have same version binary so i can install update via ota , but when i dont like update security patch i successfull go back to the previuosly october security patch 1th because same version binary number was 6 not 7. but build number letter and number changed every month when update released ;D
and i will put photo which i found on internet music app was same as in photo when i had security patch 2017 december , and maybe was be same when i flashed update via ota when i got , but when i reflashed via odin to same android version and security patch now changed music app icon and style in the app :/ no round buttons, just buttons black. or maybe not the same when i got the phone :/ i really dont remember ://
now not looks like in 2 photo no bigger play button , not rounded and not green screen on playback line which in photo i see :/
in my music stock app playback line white not green which in photo green.. and from lockscreen white background and from status bar, before installed via odin, was version bhr 2 security patch the same as i installed firmware via odin, and music app was green and paybacks buttons all 3 rounded and green three buttons and in the lockscreen and status bar background music app was GREEN WHICH COLOR I LOVE IT MORE THAN NOW WHITE!!! not lovely looks :/ i see i can installed samsung music apk latest update but i hate that because animation effect used when song played... so name ,,Music" changed to "Samsung Music" when i installed update from gplay, when i unninstall update it shows Music. and back to stock version , but not when i was in security patch 2017 not the same icon....... maybe the ota uptade changed version but i dont believe it!!! because before reflash i listened to music with stock apk music but i dont remember what icon was . but not newer samsung music really i remember this!!! because i hate samsung music update so i unninstalled and i got stock green music backround in the music app, lockscreen, and status bar, and playbacks buttons rounded and green <3.... now after reinstalled via odin same version and same security patch and same region SEB changed samsung app to 6.0.1 apk. ... there is no way roll back to music 1.5 version apk which i had on ota update before odin reflashed as the same version !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in the first picture android 5.1 not 6.0.1
G903FXX U2 BRH2
G903FXX U1 BQL1
The U# is the bootloader version which is inflexible and unforgiving. Simply put, you can't go back.
If it's just .apk file you wish to downgrade, you can extract it from G903FXXU1BQL1 and replace /system/priv-app/smusic/ or repack BRH2. That's more complicated. When downgrading is worth putting your time, as I suggested, you roll back to Lollipop or similar using the repair firmware and then odin flash G903FXXU1BQL1 after a successful boot.
how possible to downgrade to lollipop???? i wanna that! i like lollipop, but i wprried could be a problem with phone or firmware which i installed lollipop, can crashing apps or forced closed? i dont like 6.0.1 on s5 neo
yeah i wanna flash apk music, but i dont really remember the app music was 1.5 version or same like now 6.0.1. maybe lower version, but you say i can go back to LOLLIPOP . HOW BACK???? i dont wanna loose imei or phone doesnt boot after that procedure!!!
now my bootloader on 6.0.1 android and i cant flash 5.0 version lollipop...
maybe possible downgrade to 6.0.1 xxu1 because i cant install because my bootloader newer xxu2 binary number was this so i cant flash lower binary which has G903FXXU1BQL1 marshmallow, maybe than i flashed succesfully, and i saw 5.1.1 android the same xxu1 not xxu4 , so when i downgraded i dont know how but maybe try and successfull installed xxu1BQL1 marshmallow. so i can through odin installed 5.1.1??? because xxu1 5.1.1 lollipo so maybe allow to downgrade from marshamallow xxu1 version to 5.1,1 xxu1? this software lollipop : G903FXXU1AOGG. how to roll back to G903FXXU1BQL1 marshmallow?? because i wanna installed 5.1.1 which have the same XXU1 number in 5.1.1 lollipop ;D
Like I said you put the files to flash in Odin. Note that the Samsung Music app you want was released in 2015. There are some .apk ported from s6. *See the attached screenshots
