ELI5 CANBUS android development - Android Head-Units

I am professional java developer, I did minor "regular" cellphone development, I am looking to implement a hobby piece of software exposing my vehicle CAN bus to the internet via 4G.
Q1: what is "external CAN bus decoder"? are there android units with CAN bus input which I can access from my won app?
Q2: I can put my own software on those head units just as I can put my own software into my android phone right?
Q3: any recommendations for a drama-free unit to play with custom apps with CANbus and 4G connectivity?
Q4: any open source java code with canbus more or less any subject just for inspiration?
Andrey, the rusEFI guy
Thank you

About Q4: you can ask Emil. He is the author of the app OBD2AA.

Poll: Android Head Units --- Subdivision and Moderator

Hello Android Head Units Junkies,
a very great and big Knowledge Base is it here around our Android Head Units.
Amazing Guys with many knowledge,
Programmer, Modder and ROM Builder...
What do you think about a little bit more overview in that Area?
Most of all is in the Big HuiFei - 2 DIN Pure Android 4.2.2/4.4.2/4.4.4 RK3066/RK3188 CarStereo Radio Head Unit Thread.
over 1942 Pages and over #19425 Threats.
Sometimes it is hart to find the right page with the Answer to the Question what who has one or the other people here.
Some questions are going down, in so many questions...
Some great Tips & Tricks for Hardware modding on different threads...
What do you think about, a little bit more structure here?
Create some Moderator's here, to take a look for it?

The NU3001/5002 should also have their own Forum below Android Head Units, as they also have their own custom roms and the source code is freely available.
"Android Head Units" generally have no connection with Google's "Android Auto" system, they are just automotive HUs that run Android (and so far are all Chinese, with no sign of that changing, IMO due to legal liability issues).
So a parent forum IMO should not be named "Android Auto". Name is something like "Android Automotive" or "Android in the Car" or similar to get that idea across.
If HU's, like Pioneer 4100NEX that run "Android Auto" are discussed in the "Android Auto General" subforum, as they seem to be at present, some confusion will arise. I'm not sure of best name to explain this. A long and unwieldy name might be something like "Google's Android Auto and compatible Headunits".
Yes, you are right.
But anybody (Admin or a Moderator) create this Part ANDROID HEAD UNITS under Android Auto.
What i mean to bring a little bit more Structure in the Area for ANDROID HEAD UNITS.
A lot of Interesting things and solutions going under in the Big 1945 Pages Thread.

PX5C S32FO Android 10 HeadUnit

Hi,
I am new here and I have a new headunit with Android 10.
The unit is a Xonrich PX5C S32FO (RK3368)
(I can't share a link because I am a new user)
The unit works fine. Fast boot time. The CanBus information is much better than the stock radio. But I am missing a few options (Subwoofer settings, decent Apple Carplay, some settings like volume setting at startup etc etc.)
I am a total Noob regarding Android. I am a Apple user and I don't know much of Android.
The one thing I do like is the opportunity to flash and customize everything.
I like the layouts I see here with alle the flashed en rooted roms.
Can you tell me which Rom I need for my unit. (and a small howto)
Cheers!
R-v-E
Any updates about this unit?

Carplay Android Siri

my 8227l android 8.1 unit has built in carplay. some way to add in android shortcut to voice command siri, or better yet assign steering wheel button to siri. thanks
Not an MTCx unit, have requested move to [Android Head units] forum.
Suggest spending a little time searching and reading. Your 8227 doesn't have carplay, it's a screen mirror app.

How to get key navigation information from Android navigation apps

We are a company focusing on developing and making Android-based head units. We want to get key navigation information from popular Android navigation apps, like Google maps, Waze, Here WeGo, to display on the home page of our head units and, if supported, on the gauge cluster of vehicles. Can someone shed some light on how to achieve this? Thanks.
Which type of head units? MTCD/E type or other type?
Knowing this might help get your query best visibility.

Thanks for your reply. I thought Android navigation apps have universal protocol to send out key navigation information. Anyway, currently we mainly use Rockchip PX6 and SC7862 two platforms to develop vertical screen head units.
Thanks, I will request a moderator move your question to the generic Android Head-units forum.
