Carrier for after the 3g shutdown? - Moto G7 Questions & Answers

Apparently mint mobile is dropping band 2 support which will degrade my already crappy reception further. I also don't get volte with them either despite the phone being capable of this. Any alternatives, or is this just a paperweight after the shutdown?
edit: I think I have the xt1962-5 model since I have dual sim. https://www.phonemore.com/models/motorola/moto-g7/

If you can switch to AT&T that might solve the problem depending on your specific model.
This is the AT&T whitelist from April, more may have been added, check for the updated list if not on here:

If you have an AT&T phone you can 611 and ask for advanced tech support.
There may be a work around like flashing different firmware but that's as much as I know.
3G is KIA... 4G LTE/VoLTE should be good till at least the end of this decade.

Thanks. This is the most tech savvy place for the moto g7 so hopefully someone here knows. I don't have a lot of spare time to experiment with different firmwares, but I currently have lineageOS 18.1 for anyone wondering if that's a solution (it's not). One could only hope these carriers get sued for rolling out proprietary volte provisioning like this. Totally uncalled for, and shame on motorola for not being upfront about this before I bought the phone.

It's a matter of limited resources. AT&T supports most of their variants and certain unlocked ones.
It caught me off guard too, but I lucked out.
It wasn't until both my phones worked that I was sure it would work. The transition was seamless.

You can use the Moto G on a MVNO if you buy it at full price

Just finished talking to Verizon and they said that if I buy the phone in store at $199, full retail price for the Moto G, you can use it on a different CDMA carrier! So for all you people wanting to activate the G on Net10/Tracfone/Page Plus, there you go.

THANKS!
The problem is where else can we get a CDMA version of moto-g besides BB/Verizon; it is not (yet) available from motorola.com. I just called them and the sale people said they have not info as to when/where/whether or not the CDMA version will be available beside BB/Verizon. And in my case, I'm interested in the tracfone BYOP (as opposed to net10/ST), and it's not at all clear if tracfone BYOP would allow moto-g (although it might be more of a tracfone issue as opposed to a MNVO issue).
I am excited to hear about this possibility. Please keep us informed if you (or anyone) managed to score a full-priced CDMA moto-g (esp the 16G one) and get activated.

I talked to Motorola on their chat and they said that they are planning on selling the CDMA version on motorola.com, presumably without any restrictions. No date yet though. If I had to guess, I would say before the end of the month, but don't quote me on that. As another wanting to activate on Tracfone BYOP, I hope it gets here soon.
This might be a stupid question, but what are the advantages of CDMA? Clearly anything I know wont apply since the last CDMA network over here was shut down in the late 90's.
I've always wondered about the CDMA/GSM war that you lot have in the US. Clearly there must be some upside or GSM would've won already.

There's really no advantage, especially since more and more carriers are moving to LTE. LTE kind of unifies GSM and CDMA with SIM cards. However, carriers that don't support LTE yet or ones that reserve LTE for their postpaid devices (Verizon and others) require CDMA devices.

Yup, I know. I'd love to use the CDMA Moto G w/ tracfone, so I spent some time interacting with their user support. They would not commit to saying it would work, so I'm assuming it won't. I don't think Verizon will allow it.

According to posts on the howards forum, except for a couple of "accidental cases" no one has been able to activative a NEW, Droid X2/Droid 3 (which are still on 2.3) CDMA 3g phone on tracfone BYOP. Now, tracfone's BYOP program is still very new and there are lots of quirks to be ironed out, and personally I really look forward to getting one myself, but for now I'm not holding my breath.
Please prove me wrong.

I was able to activate a used Samsung Fascinate with this phone number 1-800-876-5753. Don't know if it makes a difference whether it's used or not. You can plug your MEID in this website tracfonewireless.com/byop and it will supposedly tell you if it's compatible or not. Don't trust it though, as their website has never worked right for me.

I'm not aware of a $199 CDMA Moto G. I know they sell the GSM version at that price, which could be used w/ other carriers, but tracfone's byop program is for CDMA only.
I'd want some evidence that it will actually work before I buy the phone, and I haven't seen it yet.

If there is no advantage, why did it survive past 3G in the US when it didn't in most other parts of the the world? Here in Sweden it was abandoned in 1996, I believe. Which puts in on par with 2G GSM. I think there is still one minor carrier that operates mobile broadband on CDMA450, but that's the closest we come to CDMA. No phones. Clearly there was a reason you didn't abandon it when we did. There must've been a reason to continue to develop the infrastructure. However as far as I know, there is no advantage in speed, call quality or coverage.
Admittedly, I have limited experience with CDMA. I've use CDMA phones three times in my life and I've owned exactly one CDMA phone. And not by choice. It was pre-installed in my work truck. Part of some fancy police crap that was useless outside the US.

I can't speak for the technical aspects, but the largest CDMA carrier here (Verizon), while really evil, does have very good nation-wide coverage, especially outside of major cities. So if you live outside of major cities and/or travel a lot, then CDMA becomes a very attractive (and sometimes, the only) option.
(disclaimer: of course "very good nation-wide coverage" is subjective and there are certainly plenty of holes in the coverage map, so hold your flame please )
Has anyone tried to buy one at full retail price from Verizon? It is my understanding from talking to a verizon sales rep. they are not allowed to and have no means to do so.

What carriers will this be compatible with?

I cannot find any carrier info on either this phone or the OnePlus One. Also, is this going to be some insider invite only thing?
Thanks.
I'm almost sure that the OP2 will work on all carriers like the one
and as for the "invite only thing" - yes, you will be able to buy it only with an invite (source)
I think they're unlocked for any carrier. Until last week I saw you could buy the oneplus one without an invite only on tuesdays. And now it says no invite needed, but that's just because the 2 is going out soon. I dont know think it will be the same for the 2 at least for a few months..
Like the OPO and Nexuses, the 1+2 will work on any carrier. If anything it will have even more support for worldwide LTE.
I'd be willing to bet it won't be in CDMA carriers.

No. The SD 801 is compatible with CDMA though, so I don't know why it never was, at least for Sprint. Verizon will never allow any dev friendly phones.
Don't think you will be able to have this on VZW or Sprint, they don't like to have phones that they themselves are not selling you. You'd have to get the ESN added, and they don't do that.

Maybe OnePlus 2 will be unlocked as OnePlus One.
The OP2 will be unlocked as it is not sold with a particular carrier. Don't expect CDMA though, that requires a different chipset (and a small company like OnePlus are going to make a few variations as possible).
Hopefully it will have the 800MHz band that the OP1 so severely lacked - it is one of the more common and the only widespread LTE band in the UK

FINALLY! A single hardware variant for all US carriers.

Looking at the FCC docs for what appears to be the S7, it seems like Samsung will finally make just a single hardware variant for the US, FCC ID A3LSMG935US, with the different carrier models' features and bands being enabled/disabled solely in software or firmware.
Assuming this observation is correct, this will mark a sea change in Samsung's approach which in the past meant creating a plethora of hardware variants for the US market.
This may also mean that at some point we might see an unlocked model with broad support for multiple US carriers.

Probably true but since most of us will have to buy the phone outright now due to no carrier subsidies, couldn't we just buy a T-Mobile version and active whatever bands are needed for lets say Verizon? I have always heard that T-Mobile phones are easier to deal with as far as a Sammy BL goes. I may be way off on my thinking but it was my thought as this was a way around Verizon and AT&T locking down the equipment that we own.

correct both US and canadian users already do this, you can either hex edit the modem or just flash a modem that carries the support already as many users have done.

Been using TMOBILE Phones on ATT Network for 5 years. S4- S5-Note 3, 4 and 5, S6 - etc.
Perhaps this coincides with the rumored Samsung leasing program and one unlocked phone for all carriers.
Only recently has Verizon started activating unlocked phones ie Nexus.
My 2 cents

I know in the past you could always take a Verizon S7 and use it on T-Mobile or AT&T, but the problem has been a lack of band support since Verizon only seems to include at most bands 2, 4, 5, and 13. Here's hoping the S7 changes this.

I really hope so. In the past only the Verizon model could work on Verizon, but I think it's about time Samsung changes this and follows the route of the Nexus, iPhone, and Moto direction of one phone that works on all carriers.
I have a Verizon S5 and I can easily activate any band I need by changing settings in the IOT Hidden Menu and/or Service Mode. It's been a minute since I last played around with my phone in that capacity but I know I can do it. Obviously root access is a must to do any of this so I guess we will see if Sammy bastardizes the S7 like they did the S6 Edge and Edge+ with no options at all for root. That really is a deal breaker for me. I'll keep my S5 and see what the 2016 versions of the Nexus phones are like.

No, you can't activate any band you need. You may be able to activate certain unlocked bands, but it still lacks many of the bands that are in use today by other carriers.
It has come to my attention that the Straight Talk version of the Galaxy S5 comes with an unlocked bootloader and is practically identical to the Verizon version. Cyanogenmod and TWRP can be loaded on to it. You would treat it as a developer model S5.

That seems to be what OP is implying, though I'm not as optimistic. If that's confirmed true then I'll be getting an S7 on day one.

Very interesting. But...
No VoLTE on that model means no simultaneous voice and data on Verizon, as voice will always be CDMA (assuming they don't try and pitch a hissy fit about activating on their network in the first place). Also no wifi calling on that model.

So the T-Mobile site says it supports LTE band 13. I wonder if it could be used on Verizon, even if only in LTE mode?

What bands for each of the big 4 providers?

Anyone know for sure what bands each will have? I know the unlocked will have them all. Will every US version have all of the bands as well? Researching online for some reason right now is not giving me any info. The FCC filling for the unlocked U version is all I've found so far after a day of searching online.

I think I may have finally figured it out. Samsung hopefully did what moto and apple and nexus has done for years and made them all universal. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this all before but here is what info I'm going off.

So the carrier versions are all the same just a different bloat package on all 4.
When an unlocked one arrives again the only difference might be less bloat.
This could be really good news for people who don't like contacts like myself.
Maybe faster updates from Samsung? I mean they can't possibly get slower than they already are can they?
They didn't. I have inside info from Samsung that it's the same as the GS7. They just changed the model numbering scheme to be more universally discernible. I was hoping for one phone with carrier customization but nope... they again made it impossible to get all features and bands on a different carrier.
The good news is the Verizon model doesn't have carrier branding any longer. I confirmed that today by unboxing an actual retail model.

So when do they finally release what bands each carrier model supports? Seems odd that no info exists on the phones releasing in 3 weeks. The unlocked model has all its bands published online but no official release date.
I'm curious to know if the Verizon model is the same as the unlocked one.

If you get it unlocked, insert a different carrier's sim, factory reset and it will boot with the splash screen and preinstalled apps of the carrier. I've seen the Att to Tmobile and verizon to att swap
That's interesting . I will try that when I get it. But I'm not sure that would effect the boot logo? I'm imagining it would stay the same, no?

I was hoping for one phone with carrier customization but nope... they again made it impossible to get all features and bands on a different carrier.
The good news is the Verizon model doesn't have carrier branding any longer. I confirmed that today by unboxing an actual retail model.

I think your wrong. If you go check tmobiles website the software version is G950USQU1AQC9. There is nothing mentioning tmobile specifically there. I think that they will all come with carrier animation BUT be uninstallable.
I would hope so but I received this info from a Samsung Knox Development Manager who is an internal employee. I am crossing my fingers he is full of it.
I've got the bands for the AT&T and Verizon phones. Those companies had the decency to post the info online. Samsung chat was useless and told me some BS as usual about not knowing until the phone was released. Is it possible the T-Mobile bands listed on the website are the only bands it supports? 2,4,5,12?
If the websites are accurate and just considering bands alone it looks like the AT&T one has the best support.
I'm really Curious about exynos working on Verizon and can't find any info. I'm in Korea for another 8 months and was hoping to get the Korea model S8 and take it back to the states and use it on my Verizon network. I have a feeling it won't work just like the S7 did not.
The s8 Will be just like the note 7 was.... Internals are EXACTLY the same, just different SW, and can be flashed with any carrier SW to "make" them that carriers phone.

Thats what I was thinking based on the 1 and only FCC filing with just the 'U' and no other carrier letters.
Bad news all 4 carriers support slightly different bands just like always

It's bs...Trust me. Note 7 on Samsung website showed the same. A simple flash of carrier FW makes it whatever FW is on it.

Does that mean that if say I pre-order the AT&T S8+ from Best Buy because I have in store credit and place a T-Mobile sim, it can possibly work?

Flash it with TMO SW, and it will be a "TMO" phone.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I think the best course of action for me would be to wait for the Unlocked version of the S8 to arrive in May, hopefully.

Mobile Networks Are Currently Blocked..?

Hey everyone, I could really use some help. (Sorry if this is in the wrong place)
I'm in the USA, on Verizon. I got a note FE the other day (SM-N935L) and went to put in the sim card but it keeps telling me the mobile networks are currently blocked and to contact customer service but I can't do that because I can't currently make calls or have data. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more info to possibly help, just let me know.
Thank you
This device doesn't work for Verizon or sprint it's GSM only.

Probably not,AT&T & T-Mobile are your best bets for using international phones on their networks & associated MVNOs.
Not trying to sound like a jerk, but,Google is your friend on the subject.
Here's a fairly recent write up giving a Readers Digest summary:

Also, try these sites for specific device compatibility:

@Jedibkj :
Here's another older article attempting to clear the air on the subject of Verizon & phones from elsewhere/not branded/specific to their network:

Also,here's Verizon's BYOD Compatibility page:

Yeah as stated above google helps you out tons when you are in the market for a new device. I never looked for international devices or non-carrier branded phones while I was with Verizon and Sprint they are CDMA and most unlocked devices are GSM. For me I just knew for most functions to work on my phone they had to have the sprint or verizon logo on them some where.
I have not looked back since I left both of the above companies because I feel I have so many more options now. There are others who have made the same mistake and I have seen their listings on ebay. There are lots of people looking for this device so at least you can get your money back by selling it if you need to. (swappa is a good option for selling as well)
Thank you for all the info! I thought it was CDMA compatible but I guess I was wrong.. :/ I need to check more before buying! Live and learn I guess... I'll probably end up reselling it.
Thank you for all the help!
My K model gets full LTE signal and bars on Cricket. I'm in Phoenix.
