I posted a lengthy thread a couple days ago, seeking help with my Samsung Tab A.
To simplify, has anyone used the "Erase App Data" option in Recovery? (Running stock Android 9)
This option is different than the "Wipe data/factory reset" in the bootloader.
I need to know what all it will actually erase, before I attempt to use it to boot the tablet.
Many thanks to anyone who can help!!
All critical data should already be backed up redundantly. Apps that allow for backup import/export files as well.
If the load is goofed up bad enough to need a factory reset, do so and get a clean start.
It's always best to find the root cause of an issue than to do a factory reset if possible... to prevent it from reoccurring. Malware, rootkits, boot loops and hidden user settings misconfiguration or corruption are the possible exceptions.

Thanks for your reply! I appreciate you taking the time!!
Unfortunately, that's my problem.
(I posted the entirety of the issue in another thread, but have yet to get any replies about it)
The problem is that the storage was full when it tried to do a system update. The update failed and started cycling between a boot loop and the recovery page. With "perform lacking storage booting" error.
I've been able to backup my data on the SD card I use in it. But have no way to access the internal storage so that I can pull important schoolwork for my daughter (she's homeschooled, so most of her stuff is on here).
I can post pictures of the screen if that helps, but when it takes me to the recovery page it gives me instructions to try, number 2 being "Erase App Data" (says deleting app configuration settings/data, may make it possible to enter Safe Mode to backup my files).
But I don't want to try it, before seeing if anyone else has used this option.
I'm exhausting all my options to try and save the data first, before it gets wiped.
Hopefully that made sense?
Here's the link to my original thread, with more detailed info and screen pics.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A- Need to backup but stuck in boot loop after update
Hello all, Hopefully I'm posting this in the correct section and someone can help me with my dilemma.. 😳🥺 I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A, Model #T510, running stock Android 9 Pie (I believe). I was trying to clear up space in the file system...

Try it as it's your only option, I believe. Maybe someone here has a better plan so waiting won't hurt.
Either way you and your daughter got some indelible crash course lessons from the school of hard knocks.
Backup all critical data, here today, gone tomorrow... if not!
Disable upgrades and updates, destroyer of worlds... in more ways than one.
Always keep a healthy amount of headroom on internal memory. The more, the better. I want at least 20gb.
The best lessons are learned the hard way. I have one lost database to my name that had 30 years of contact data on it

Yes, unfortunately life lessons are not easy. But then, nothing worth something ever is.
I worked for Dell, and it's subsidiaries for years... So I fully understand the value in backing things up. Just wasn't fast enough this time.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply!

You're welcome. Erase app data may apply to their settings only. Files in the Documents may be unaffected but no guarantees.
An unstable Android is an unpredictable critter.

Hello.
I faced the same issue.
Tell me please, have you tried to do "Erase app data"?
Were you able to enter safe mode?
Did you manage to recover data from the internal memory?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

I was using the XDArit utility to write to the SD card and selected Disk0:Memory Card Adapter.. got a message stating it was my boot disk but I ignored it since it listed as the memory card adapter... guess what.. now my PC won't boot, says no operating system found.. I tried booting the win XP disc and doing a repair but it doesn't see anything on C:
anyway to recover my drive? I am sure the stuff is there somewhere right? Sh*t.. I wish I had done this on my home PC and not the office PC.
any help appreciated
Haha!
you overwrote your harddrive!
Since I don't have any idea what the tool you used does, I will (randomly) suggest http://www.partition-recovery.com and their program PR.exe. If the tool does a lazy format or bootsector write (just rewrites the 1st few sectors) PR may work. You can download a test version which won't operate fully but which will say if it finds anything to recover. If the XDA tool actually writes substantial amounts then this won't help.
There are quite a few tools which will scan the disk for anything that looks like data and recover what they can. Of course, if the tool you used actually overwrote the whole disk then you'd have to go a specialist company - and data receovery might still be possible - but this is likely to cost.
Good luck.
PS
I don't think "Haha" was a very kind comment. Not my idea of a "solutions provider" to go to - no matter how expert they might think they are.
Still, it did make me decide to sign up to the forum to post this in case it helps.
I downloaded the demo of PR.EXE and after scanning my drive, it appears that all data is still there... so I have purchased the full version of PR.EXE and it appears promising that I will be able to recover the most important stuff and simply restore my system (needed a restore anyway).
Thanks for the tip!

thx mate ... I appreciate such attitude ... hope others will learn someday! ... welcome on board
After a ridiculous snafu on Sprint's part involving upgrading my wife's HTC Hero to a Nexus S, which has resulted in a long winded complaint to the BBB concerning Sprint's idiocy, I encountered a problem with my phone. In the upgrade process, the dumbass as the Sprint store decided he needed to deactivate my phone for a few mins to do some voodoo magic (?) and then accidentally reactivated it to the old Hero, rather than my Epic (I was not at the store when this all went down). Needless to say I was unable to reactivate my my phone by updating the profile even, so I spent an hour on the phone with Customer Care trying to get my Epic working again, and SOMEWHERE in that whole process the CWM backup files and the CWM folder the resided in on my SD card were erase. I had done a factory reset right after a backup this morning since the EF02 ROM I was running, which was just the basic deodexed with the screen off animation and overscroll flashed in, would force close every time I tried to go to Settings > About Phone > System Updates. So back on factory EF02 I was and though the System Updates worked I couldn't get the profile to update since the MSID got all messed up. The Customer Care rep had me perform a RTN reset from the dialer, but that is about it, and now all my data is just gone... I'm trying in earnest to recover the back .img files, but am having little success so far (trying TestDisk on my Ubuntu laptop). I took a raw image of the SD card immediately, before trying any sort of recovery efforts, so if anyone has ANY advice, tips, trick, or ideas for me to get my CWM .img files back, I would love you for forever.

Not directly related to solving your problem but will prevent it in the future... Make a backup and/or remove SD card prior to giving to tech (same applies w/ the hard drive in your laptop, ps3, toaster, etc.).

I had the phone and was walking through this with the Sprint Customer Care rep on the phone, and there was nothing I did that should have had any effect on specifically the CWM directory on the SD card... just doesn't make sense.
Check your LOST.dir folder? perhaps they got corrupted and ended up there?

I'm a little new to the acer iconia a500 and just rooted it using the 3.2.1 rooting method on xda. Well the first thing i did was make a backup on mybackup to /mnt/sdcard. And i forgot that was still a system partition.... So when I followede the rooting pdf and rooted it, everything, and i mean EVERYTHING was gone, as if it was factory reset. My question is if i can get any data back?

Double Nope. It's been formatted.
I find if its that important to you to transfer to PC.... The chances of having the info I need on the wrong partition and my main PC dying are pretty thin, I think....

this happened to me when i used the downgrade to get the 4.0.3 leak off my tablet. i made a big stink about there being ZERO warning that its a format and not a re-flash like the 3.0 downgrade method, judging by your experience you can see how little the guy who came up with that method cares about what he does to someone else's tablet without warning.
First rule of flashing, backup to a known SAFE location. Don't go blaming other people for your own stupidity.
Thats what i thought....
Would have been nice to have put that in bold red letters on the post.... roots at least still worth it.
Formatting storage will always wipe stored data. It's been that way since, like, forever.
I intentionally formatted my Iconia using the rotation lock toggle, then just for kicks, I tried out a few data recovery programs on it. I was able to recover almost everything from the tablet that I wanted using Recuva, even apks from my download folders.
Here's a link, http://www.piriform.com/recuva.
While this won't help to restore your tablet, you can at least salvage your pics and stuff.
Hope that helps.

How do you map the iconia as a drive letter? Recuva seems to need it mapped as a letter to work.
not sure if its what your looking for. as i do not know that recovery program
but to map a network drive .. From a windows computer go to Network then at the top click tools then map network drive. Follow the instructions. You may need to go into my computer . providing you have full path shown in folder options. You can highlight the iconia partitions . then copy the location an the bar at top of page. Past it into the correct location back in the map network drive tool.
hope this is not to complicated or steps missing . typed in a hurry and from memory . its easy to do something then miss a step explaining it.
by the way NEVER EVER EVER FLASH NOTHING Without DATA BACKED up someplace off the device. i backup to ftp site and to my notebook as well as on my sd card.
If this is helpful smile .
Sadly that's the first thing I tried. It didn't work....
Either way having plasma active port on my iconia is worth it.

Yeah, we got nixxed on using a remote Sat Taser to give warnings when you're about to mess with installing Roms and such.
There's no substitute for redundancy
yep external backups if you need to keep all the info , thumb drives , I dont personally care myself if I lose it all on the acer , I can always find a way back to where I was , just will take longer, i back up in Ra before switching roms ,but thats about it!
how to install a custom rom on acer a500!!
Hey I rooted my acer a500 two days ago useing xda v4 root (for acer iconia a500) it was very user friendly
now I want to install a custom romm so I can overclock or underclock it how do I do that need help!!! Thank u
i was trying to get my backups off my nexus 4, and i used the root browser, navigated to Data/media/ and found the backup folder where they were kept, i highlighted, copied, and transfered it to where the "SD" is , but in trying to remove it/send it back to its original place, i cant do it, it'll fail , or if i highlight the folder (i somehow made duplicates) and try to delete it, it says it has, but its still there ,and if i go into the folder it'll all still be there, and from my 8GB N4 which has about 5GB usable, i know have about 600kb , if i manually delete each part i kinda get the space abck (now im at 1.9GB) but i should have atleast 2.5GB or so ,as thats how much i had after i made the back up in the first place.
Now my actual question was going to be, if i go into CWM and go mounts and storage, which ones do i have to format to get EVERYTHING back to normal, i dont give a **** about losing all my stuff because i have it all on my computer and in the cloud, so yeah, who can help, i am screwed otherwise

I dont suppose anyone has a complete image of a uk nook simple touch glowlight by any chance, or even just a copy of the rom partition that I can copy back into place using minitool partition wizard?

Will do. Just having trouble now creating a fat32 partition. The various programs ive tried only let me make a 16mb fat16 partition and after putting the rom data on it, the nook still doesnt want to boot. There may be other problems with the rest of the software. Ah well. I'll either get there or buy another e-reader )) But the challenge is more entertaining.

If it was logical, I'd totally give you a full image, but the problem is that each device has its own serial number - if I give you an image of my device, then your device will have mine's serial number, which won't work out so well!
I'd love to keep trying to help you, though - Nook Touch related things are really my forte.
Let's start at the beginning - in your first post, you said that "you managed to mess up your GlowLight". What did you do to mess it up?
Is/was your Nook rooted?
Will your device boot and be used properly, but the GlowLight itself just doesn't work?

Hi again, sorry for not getting back sooner - that damned thing called life always gets in the way
Yeah, it was rooted. I had used cwm and had adw running as a front end and had installed the screen lock bypass, but the bypass didnt work out so well - quite a bit of battery drain - even when left on a table(so no accidental waking up) - i tried to return it to stock - cant remember what i did tho - and now it just starts with the read forever screen and gets no further - it also seems that it doesnt power off and stays on till the battery is flattened. Trying to boot from the sd card using either nook manager or noogie works just fine tho.
I can see the partitions though minitool partition wizard and the Rom partition is "unallocated" there is also an unallocated space of 56mb at the end of the partitions.
I have tried recreating a fat32 rom partition and then copying the rom backup info from the factory partition, but no joy. For some reason, no partition software I have could create a fat32 partition directly on the nook, so I had to create one on the pc and then copy it over :-/
Thanks for the continued help btw

Are you interested in getting back the B&N functions? Because if not, then what I can do is back up my rooted GlowLight, factory wipe it back to 1.1.5, bypass Oobe (B&N registration), update to 1.2.1, and then make an image of that for you.
Beware, though, you won't be able to use any of the B&N functions if you want me to do that, because your device will have mine's serial number. But don't worry, it won't share anything except for that, so your device will be plenty usable.

How would I transfer the complete image? I presume fire up noogie and partition wizard, wipe(err backup) all the partitions on my nook and then copy your partitions over?

EDIT - See OverByter's post below, it has shown me that this wouldn't work out.
Try his method. I'll only give you an image of my device as a last resort.
Your image will also have your mac address besides the serial number, don't think that this is the way to go, basically he'll have an unworkable clone of your device. Why doesn't he use cwm to wipe the partition and then either adb push the rom or use a flashable image?

Okay, I may actually have solved your problem! Try the following steps - it's called the "eight interrupted boot" method.
1. I am expecting your Nook is still stuck at the "Read Forever" screen. If it's not, go ahead and turn your Nook all the way off.
2. Now, press the power button to take it to the "Read Forever" screen.
3. After it's there, press and hold the power button again to make the screen flash black and go back to the "Read Forever" screen.
4. Perform step 3 seven more times.
5. After the 8th interrupted boot, your Nook will restore itself to the factory image that it came with right out of the box.
6. Done!
Hope this works! :good:
