I am faced with entering a password upon turning on this Zenphone 5 - but I don't recall ever configuring one!
I'ts saying: "Warning: Your device will be wiped after 7 more failed attempts to be unlocked!"
Is there any way to reset this - without losing the data? I need to recover some photographs from WhatsApp. (which were never backed up to Google or any other service)
What about connecting it to a laptop via USB? Any possibilities there?
Thanks!

After following a process elsewhere on XDA to set up a pin lock, (here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848962&highlight=lock) I've been locked out of my device, with the response Too Many Pattern Attempts.
It says: "to unlock, sign in with your Google account." But I do that, and receive an invalid login response. (This is without active wi-fi, which I can't access for the settings!) I'm not certain that it's trying to connect online, but that's my only explanation for why my google credentials aren't working.
I was hoping I could use ADB to reset the PIN again, but ADB doesn't appear to recognize the Nook; maybe it's not opening up the device to USB until it gets unlocked. And ADB Wireless is something I can't even access until I get past this!
I'm currently on the road so I can't go back to my home wi-fi... and I'm not even sure that the nook would connect to the home wi-fi anyway.
At the very least, I'd love to find out how to boot it in recovery mode, maybe re-install and re-root everything. I've seen a few posts online about rebooting in recovery mode, but nothing consistent.
Any suggestions?
Hi all, the other night i went to be and my phone woke us up making a ticking noise. i looked at the screen to find it suddenly asking for a password/pin to decrypt. i have NEVER encrypted or even looked at the menu to encrypt my phone. the phone is also completely stock from verizon, although as i understand the vzw variant claims to be rooted. i do not have a pass or pin to unlock. it also says i have 0/10 attempts left to enter my pass/pin. if i enter one at random, the attempts remaining changesto 1/10. this seems backwards to me. if i enter any more false passwords the number does no go up or down anymore. i can access the hard factory reset screen by using the vol down +power key combo but when i confirm the device to wipe i get e cannot mount cahce and e cannot open cahce log. it also says unknown error 150. if i try to wipe cache it says the same thing. i tried to use the sideload from adb option and my computer recognizes an adb connection but it only allows me to run the adb sideload command, which fails due to the mounting errors as well. if i try to run any other adb commands it immediately says "closed" in my command prompt. i cannot load any images from sd card either since the phone has no sd card slot and i cannot access the internal storage in any way ive tried. i went to use the lg flash tool to try and just flash a new image and everything goes fine until the 15 or 16 second mark and then it tells me it fails because the erase command is unsuccessful.
im getting ready to send it in to lg or verizon but i just hate being beaten by such a mysterious problem. can it not mount or give me access to overwrite with the flash tool because of encryption? or is it "encrypted" due to a faulty chip causing an issue? its weird that it can still boot to this pass/pin screen, it has the standard soft keys on bottom of the screen, so it looks like th UI is actually still being recognized. also, i am/was connected to a corporate exchange server but we have never had a policy in place to require encryption and there is another android user in our office who has not had this happen. i am the tech guy and i have verified this. can anyone help me at least understand what the problem might be? i just hate not knowing, even if i still have to send it in. is it truly hardware? or is it just software gone crazy?
Hi. I had a pin unlock for my phone. I forgot it and entered it too many times. Now it wants me to unlock via my google account which is totally fine...but my phone wasn't connected to WiFi or mobile data wasn't enabled.
So even though I enter the correct details the phone cannot verify them!
I went unto Android device manager and tried to reset the lock screen but it failed to work.
I don't want to do a factory reset as I have not got some recent (and really quite important!) photos backed up! What do I do?
I tried to use a USB cord connected to my phone and PC but because the phone is locked only sleep and charge works.
Please help! Gracias
I tried to root the device, however the custom bootloader couldn't load at all, and no attempt worked at all (Kingroot failed multiple times).
Due to the expenses of the sim unlock and the relative age of the phone, my mother decided to buy me a new phone to replace my old Nokia Lumia. Forgetting that I should have taken precautions, I did a factory reset on this one, only to get stuck on the Huawei screen. The phone is undetected by both ADB and my PC.
Can I unbrick it some way?
EDIT:
The problem got solved somehow, however I still cannot do a factory reset on my phone, which would be necessary for selling it. I try to restore the default bootloader.

Install your default rom with twrp and do factory reset.
Ps: to root use Magisk.

Hi all. So I have a frustrating issue with my phone after having updated to the last official firmware from the Asus website. I noticed that the phone operation was very slow, so I decided to do a factory reset from recovery. Everything went well until I am somehow locked out of my phone via FRP. The weirdest thing is that instead of asking for google credentials, it's asking for a pattern, which I am correctly inputting but it refuses to recognize it. So now I'm stuck with a locked out phone. Am I SOL at this point or is there a way to get past this other than taking it to a service center?
Things I've tried that haven't worked:
1. tried to erase user config in fastboot (returned error FAILED)
2. wiped all data in recovery
3. tried to flash to an older version via asus flashtool but didn't work as the device isn't recognized
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok i had the exact problem the latest patch for the device , i manually updated to oreo 8.1, has some bug that sometimes it doesnt recognise pin or pattern after some reboots it recognized it but it's not persistent as it stopped working.
I was able to fix it by flashing an older version with sp flashtool. You need to download and properly install SPFlashtool and everything it needs then you have to search for an spflashable rom that it's compatible with the one you have.
