How to clean completely a second hand phone? - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

I have bought a second hand OnePlus 8 Pro.
What should I do to reset it and avoid any risk of spy programs?
A common "Factory Reset" would be enough?

As long as it's a stock rom and Android 9 or higher a factory reset should be all that's needed.

Thanks. Not sure if it could be a modified Rom. If I were a malicious seller I would use something not affected by factory reset, but I don't know if that is possible

Using avast! Hard Reset Protection

If I somehow brick my custom ROM and need to back up to a previous state, will this security app cause problems and not allow me to fix my phone?
Just wondering! Thanks.

I always used that, and never had a problem flashing roms (didnt turn it off before flashing)
i think it only stops say if you lost your phone, and somebody found it, and they did the hard reset option in storage (factory reset)
doesnt think it stops it at all at the custom recovery/ODIN level

Ah, that makes me feel a lot better. Thanks man.
But does that mean they could instead flash a backup or something onto the phone to bypass that "hard" reset?

yes, if a computer geek finds it you're done
but with sprint you can have them blacklist the EMEI
on GSM they could still use your phone

If you updated and didn't do a factory reset, then do a factory reset and your battery will be just as good or better.
Make a backup just in case. :good:
How can I know if I did a factory reset? Is that something I would have needed to manually do or after installing lollipop it automatically does a factory reset? Also, why does doing a factory reset somehow make the battery last longer? Sorry for so many questions but how do I create a backup?

Also, If I want the phone to work better how do I do what you did with yours and have a custom ROM? Will that make the phone work a lot faster & better?

You need to do it manually. When updating a rom there might occur issues because of cache/dalvik and b/c of differences between the old and the new version of the firmware. If you do a factory reset (aka wipe) the app cache will be cleared. Sometimes not wiping when upgrading can result in low battery life, app crashes etc.
Here's a step by step guide http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/factory-reset-galaxy-s5/
To flash a custom rom you need to have a custom recovery, for more on that go here and read all of it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699648
"Lite" (XstresoLite rom for example) versions of roms usually make the phone faster, as does cyanogenmod. Take a look in "S5 android development" and "S5 unified android development" for roms.

Preparing Nexus 6p for sale, how to wipe data?

I have read that the most secure way to wipe data permanently on android devices and preparing them for sale is to do two things:
1- encrypt the device
2- factory restore
Since Nexus 6p comes already with mandatory encryption, then the only thing I have to do is to just reset the device to factory setting, is that true?

Yes, right. You will just need to flash the factory image, and your device will be encrypted, all by itself. This will completely wipe the storage, so make sure that you do a backup first.

Thanks DJBhardwaj, but why do I need to flash the factory image? the device is already encrypted?

That's correct. Encrypt the device first via the settings menu (Settings/Security/Encrypt Phone), then flash the factory images to return to stock. See my guide for detailed instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
Look at section 10 specifically, this instructs you how to return the device to the state it was in when it left the factory, including removing all of your personal data.

Sorry, my bad. Just do a factory reset via stock recovery, or from within the Settings itself.

To ensure that it's in a completely stock state for the buyer. Or has it never been modified?

My mistake! I'm so used to people having modified devices that I automatically assume every device is. As DJ already said a factory reset should suffice.

Don't use recovery unless you have already deleted all accounts. The new user will end up needing your Google login to be able to get into the phone.

This happened to me when I sold a Moto X on Swappa. I ended up giving the buyer my credentials over the phone then changing them 5 minutes later.

Yes, I also tried by factory reset. I cant explain exact issue, some virus/malware exist on my phone which makes my phone slow.
I tried many antiviruses but no luck so far.
So I want to format/repair/restructure folder/system files of phone so that infected files gets deleted from phone.
Factory reset and installing stock firmware is not replacing/deleting all folders/files of my phone.
Best Regards...

How do you know your phone is infected though? Factory reset + flashing already overwrites all your system files.....

Last update problem

There was a software update a couple of days ago. Am i the only one who is facing a problem with it? Scrolling has a pretty bad lag everywhere and multitasking has a problem as well. Is this common?

No it is not common, and please stop multiple posting the same vague issue. Wipe your phone, do a fresh install of the stock ROM and test it before adding apps and/or mods.

If you did restore your phone to it's blank factory state (properly) then you wouldn't be experiencing this problem, because it doesn't exist on a stock ROM. Start by fastboot formatting System, Cache and Userdata. Then use the flash-all.bat script that comes with a full stock image. Please note I did not say "factory reset". Is your phone encrypted or un-uncrypted?

It is unencrypted.. and i think that i misunderstood u at that beginning. What i did was a factory reset. I will do what u have been saying however i remembered a while ago that i an in beta and this might be the reason so i unenrolled my phone and i am waiting for the downgrade.. if the same problem continued i will restore it to its blank factory. Thank ?

I wouldn't hold my breath, and I certainly wouldn't take a downgrade... if it that ever comes. Thinking that "Oreo has caused some sort of problem so I must downgrade to N or MM" is just plain wrong. Why anyone with a Nexus or Pixel would want to be on N or MM is beyond me. It's your phone, so knock yourself out.
