[PLEASE HELP] Warranty center bricked my N20U - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Guides, News, & Discu

Setup
I purchased my N986-U1 on 01/25/2021
My warranty expires 01/27/2022
Incident
On 10/24, I was forced to accept an OTA update and scheduled it to install while I was sleeping.
On 10/25, I woke to a fully charged and functioning phone (e.g. facial recognition, haptics, loaded to home screen, pulldown menu etc. worked normally) but from the top 1/8" down, the display showed white and green horizontal lines at max brightness (photo below).

I really need to get my media off this phone.
Given my phone is under warranty I took it to the authorized Samsung warranty center Samsung Support directed me to. Instead of telling me on 10/25 I just needed to hook up my still functioning phone (display aside) to a monitor via HDMI and pull off my data or trying the screen replacement first, this Samsung authorized technician did a dirty flash (N986U1UES2DUG1) without a working display. The flash did not fix the display. By the time he swapped the screens (new display renders properly), the phone was booting to recovery. Technician said he could not release a warranty serviced phone that doesnt boot. So he put my original screen back in and I picked it up.
So my went from being stuck on a phone that had a malfunctioning display to being stuck on a phone that the Samsung warranty technician got stuck in Android Recovery and my display still doesn't work.
Current status
At infrequent random times the original display does render but it reverts to lines again after an off/on cycle. When it randomly does render, it shows the Android Recovery menu of "Try again", "Factory data reset", and "View recovery logs". Selecting "Try again" restarts the phone, cycling the screen through an off/on cycle and it goes back to lines.
I have moved my SIM and reactivated my account on an old S8+ for now.
Options
Data recovery services will sideload third party software onto the phone and void the warranty. Best case is I would be out ~$2000 (quote I got from two places), have my media, have some stranger have access to all my other information, and a broken phone with voided warranty.
Pay for screen replacement out of pocket. I could pay for the screen replacement out of pocket to get a working display and try to flash a different firmware or sideload the stock or other ROM myself. This would cost $270 through Samsung directly, but I have no guarantee the sideload will work and I may be ultimately forced to perform a factory reset.
Factory reset. I have the warranty center replace the display and perform the factory reset and (with a working display) attempt file recovery using adb to acquire the userdata partition and put it through digital forensic software like Autopsy to look for media. But to acquire userdata I'm reading I need at least temporary root.
Questions
Can I get the userdata partition if this idiot flashed with bootloader 2? Recall that he flashed N986U1UES2DUG1 (bootloader 2, 09/2021) onto the phone. And from my reading here, I cannot get root with BL2.
Are there other options I'm not aware of?
Details
On 10/24, I was forced to accept an OTA update and scheduled it to install while I was sleeping.
On 10/25, I woke to a fully charged and functioning phone (e.g. facial recognition, haptics, loaded to home screen, pulldown menu etc. worked normally) but from the top 1/8" down, the display showed white and green horizontal lines at max brightness (photo below).
My primary objective is getting my photos and videos off the phone
I chatted with Samsung Support highlighting my first priority (photos and videos) and the Support Pro told me to register the phone and bring it into a uBreakiFix store for warranty service
I registered my phone, scheduled my appointment, and brought the phone into the store
I showed the technician that only the display is malfunctioning and explained again my first priority are getting my photos and videos off the phone
The technician dirty flashes the phone to see if the problem goes away, but the display is still showing lines
The technician swaps screens and the new screen renders, but into recovery with the "Can't load Android system" menu
The technician says he tried to dirty flash again (to preserve my photos and videos) but it boots into recovery again
The technician says he cannot release a warranty service phone with work done that does not boot
The technician puts my old screen back in and the screen renders the very first time, but into recovery
The technician selects "Try again" but display goes back to lines again
I pick up my phone
I leave it on to drain the battery
At infrequent random times (once every 1-2 days) the display renders properly (showing Android Recovery; see below) until it is cycled off/on, at which point it will go back to lines

Thanks for the help guys. </sarcasm>
In case this is useful to anyone else in the future, I recovered the phone with all data with the following.
Downloaded Odin 3.14.4 from https://technastic.com/odin-download-samsung-latest-all-versions/ that came with cpprest141_2_10.dll but that also loaded with a link pointing to "mobilerndhub.sec.samsung.net/hub/site/odin/" per this post:
Always check the bottom left corner of the odin3 window. There is a link and almost every site loves to change it to their site or some malware site. If its anything else than "http://mobilerndhub.sec.samsung.net/hub/site/odin/" than its fake by my count.

Downloaded the N986U1UES2DUJ7 (November 2021) firmware from here.
And flashed the half assembled phone myself at the warranty center using HOME_CSC.

[Q] brand new i9505g shutting down by itself and freezing

Hi all,
Just purchased a brand new Galaxy S4 Google Edition directly form Google's play store. Everything seemed perfect, but after a couple of hours of usage the phone simply rebooted itself, and after passing the startup google logo, it froze with a weird symbol in the middle and blue/red strikes on the screen. The blue led indicator remains on and the screen remains frozen. Shutting the phone on and off takes me back tyo the same issue. The only solution is a battery pull which makes it work perfectly well for a couple of hours until I get the same error back.
I did a complete factory reset, including data and cache wipe, and got the same error. It seems to happen randomly, with both the phone in
standby mode and while using it. It also happened with sim and without a sim card installed while connected only to a WI-FI network. About two or three times during the day.
As it is a brand new phone, I do not want to install any new firmware as I wouldn't like to void my warranty. I still don't want to believe this brand new phone is defective though.
As an additional note, the phone's temperature and performance seems perfectly fine. When working the phone's performance and condition seems perfectly fine with no other associated issues.
Anyone heard or experienced something similar?
Thanks,
Alberto

Take it back to where you bought it.
It looks like you have a dud.

[Q] Nexus 4 wont turn on with usual fixes

Hi guys Ive got a new problem with my nexus 4 (this time not user inflicted :angel on friday my phone was at 80% battery and i turned it off, it had been working fine these past few weeks but now it wont turn back on, i've tried the following things:
Charging overnight with original charger from the mains
holding the buttons in all combinations then putting the charge lead in and holding them for at least 30secs
The phone doesn't have a notification light of any kind
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
ps the bootloader is unlocked so i guess sending it back isn't an option
Some people have said they sent it back with unlocked bootloader without issues. I don't see the issue as long as you still have stock.
You can try removing the battery and reinserting it, then charge. Or replacing the battery.

Ok thanks i might try that
Ive called lg and im going to send the phone in under warranty, ill let you know how it goes:fingers-crossed:
I think I got the same problem -kinda. I clicked reboot and then went on to stare at my laptop screen for a while. The last thing I notice is that it's at the bootanimation. The next time I look at it again, it's dark. well, of course, since I naturally thought the screen is off but the problem is nothing happens no matter what I do -just like OP. oh, and there's no blinking red light or whatever.
One thing I notice is that the device is listed under adb. If the device is off shouldn't there be nothing listed there? So, is this damn device still turned on?

Your ADB is enabled but is not activated for your connected device, it is activate by the popup notification in the phone.
Do a factory reset.
sometimes for some whatever reason phones can get stuck in adb sideload mode(i saw only 2 phones do that, and one was GS3 with cm installer, the other was an old galaxy ace).get a rom zip and take a look and see if adb sideload Works.
fixed it. I've charged it the whole night before I posted that screenie. I've approved the rsa fingerprint or whatever before the phone dies so technically it should connect since I've even pushed some files around before that. What i'm trying to point out is that even though the phone is dead(?), why does it appear under adb? I could fathom fastboot but adb? So all the while I'm charging it overnight and frantically raping the power button pressing it like some nuts, the N4 is actually booted up? damn.
Anyway, I charged it for a couple more hours since my last post and then just now, I pressed the power button for about a minute (connected to pc) and suddenly the notification on my pc went nuts. It's saying the N4 is being connected and disconnected over and over again -goes on for about a minute and all the while the cursed red light appears though it goes off after a while. Hit the power button again after the light disappeared and voila -it booted up normally like nothing happened :curses: --talk about acting innocent.
Tried doing some reading on why it even happened but I don't get it at all. Oh well, whatever. I just hope it doesn't happen again.
Glad you got it sorted, lg sent me an email saying they are sending me the phone back, they haven't asked for any money so i assume they've fixed it under warranty
Got it back today, says the phone has had a new battery and flex. Could the damage have been caused by the wireless charger?

Brand new Axon 7 - screen problem / corruption (video card problem?)

I just got a new Axon 7 from Amazon. Not refurbished, not open box - brand new.
Charged it up, started it and I get this madness :

The artifacts jump around on their own a bit, but also when the screen is touched. I removed the screen protector but the issue remains. So, I went to recovery mode, formatted data/cleared cache/reset to factory. Still the same. Just to be sure, I re-flashed B25 stock image from EDL mode, but it still shows the same screen/graphics corruption. Thoughts?
@heliosol ... Don't mess about - send it back to Amazon.

That's hilarious... One of the weirdest things I've seen in a while
Probably something wrong with the GPU, since you said that you reflashed the system. Do an RMA, don't you dare touch the bootloader
It's Amazon. Send it back and demand a new one. Why are you messing with it and potentially screwing yourself out of being able to return it?
To clarify (and add to the hilarity?): I bought an Axon 7 about 4 days ago. It had no display issues, but my SIM card didn't work in it and it had a tendency to not wake up from sleep (i.e. I press the power button or let it time out and then the only thing that would get it going is holding the power button again). I figured maybe it's my SIM card, or micro SD, or maybe some bug in the OS. Pulled out SIM and micro SD, re-flashed stock a few times, no luck. Send it back to Amazon.
Got a replacement. This one, with the screen issue. I am not at all messing around with it, it's going back on Monday. I just wanted to see if someone else was having similar issues with it -- perhaps it was some common thing that did not require a return and exchange. Doesn't look like it!

The bad thing is that a bunch of phones have every kind of trouble you can get on a phone. The good thing is that ZTE replaces them. Hell you can even RMA your phone if you messed the software so much that you can't see the ZTE logo...

Hello, yesterday my phone started to show some green color on the screen, it started by once, I didn't drop it or something. Few seconds it's working good, but then it returns to all green or all mixed. And when i lock my phone, it starts to become green, even when it's locked?? Tried going to safe mode, soft and master reset, nothing is working. Any ideas? Thank u guys!

Open a ticket with Samsung and send it in for a screen replacement. if there is no water damage or physical damage they will fix it for free under warranty.
I have this green issue with flickering lines...
Warranty expired...

Green Screen of Death
Very sorry to hear about it
While my S8 was messed up, my sisters s7 Edge had the exact same problem...

Now slowly, the green screen would start to flicker at times and lo one day, it would turn into a pale green light. You wont be able to do anything with the phone.
My IMMEDIATE ADVICE ...
TAKE a COMPLETE BACKUP of your data as soon as you read this message.
Secondly
Try turning the Blue Light filter off, Change the saturation of the phone and see if you are still seeing the green shade,
Send this device to service center.
EDIT :- Just now noticed the OP's date is almost a year old.
I got a same issue too today ****sung!
Is there a fix ? i dont wanna pay 250$ to replace the screen.it works well in full brightness
i got the same green screen on galaxy s8+ today after using it for 2 years i had custom kernel with hari rom, the phone is usable in full brightness, it has green overlay with horizontal line flickering over it i think this a motherboard issue, have your issue resolved ? what you did? i am thinking to change board and see
I have fixed my phone twice with this problem. You need to heat up the screen. Full brightness then record video for an hour. You should see the greenness recede. If there are green lines st the bottom which don't disappear, use a hairdryer on the screen. You will see the green vanish in 30seconds. When the phone cools, it will come back. You need to keep regularly reheating your screen to get rid of it, like every 20 minutes for a day or, 2. Eventually it will clear up. It's a pixel what issue. Heating the screen repeatedly restores functionality, after least in my case.

It is correct that it works in full brightness. Turn off the adaptive brightness and voila you can continue to work with full brightness. However, you can also reduce your
pixel to full HD from QHD to continue in this mode. I have been working on this for last few days else the ****sung care only want's to replace the screen combo .
Will try the heating methodology. I have doubts about battery also and planning to change and see.
Same issue just popped up today for me. Rooted nougat ROM with safestrap. It's definitely not the screen itself, and it's behavior is Sunday strange, it'll show up on webpages or other screens that are mostly white, but not on the dark mode applications.
so it's green on this thread and it gets less green when I open Chrome's settings on the top right.
Reboot fixes it. Until it comes back again.
Started to face this green tint issue on my S8 recently, the phone worked well for the past two years until suddenly one day this green **** happened. Never dropped the phone and never rooted it. For now rebooting the phone solves the issue, until it comes back. Till now it happened 5-6 times in a week. Rebooting fixes it and then it runs normally for sometime (or somedays) then it happens again.
Any solution?
Apparently it is a software problem, something about some screens batch that does not received well those new patches. i took my s8 g950fd at a Samsung authorized store and is was what they told me, but they don't fix it for free if it is not on warranty even though it is a Samsung software problem. I have tried to root and change roms, but it seems my cellphone does not accept root or new roms. if some one know how to help me id be grateful.
my screen has green after unlock bootloader. i didn´t anything, so im tired :/
Sounds like a firmware bug* on at least some of these. Samsung tech support sucks elephant balls bad. Obviously Samsung is well aware of this issue by now.
*during a production run Samsung will substitute smaller chipsets and components as needed. This can cause erratic firmware/update behavior as the substituted components don't have the correct values and/or code. If so you're in a fubar because Samsung is unlikely to supply the needed patch at this late date.
You can try flashing the original firmware, be wary of updates. It could be a system apk update as well.
It could also be a hardware failure on a whole batch(es) of these phones.
started having this problem suddenly now, didn't drop it, didn't do any updates. wow!

SCREEN REPLACEMENT PROBLEM

hi there, I just replaced my screen for the umpteenth time but, on this occasion, it hasn't "taken". The old screen is totally obliterated, smashed display, but it still takes power and behaves as it should (lights up on disconnection of usb charger, for example). The new screen? Not so much. It does actually work, it shows the picture fine, but it only shows it for a fraction of a second then blinks off. When I press the power button again it does nothing, as it thinks I'm turning the phone off, then when I press it again the screen comes back on for a half a second or so and same issue. Have checked all connections, all fine, have swapped in the old screen to confirm it behaves as it should, all fine.
I'm wondering, could this be some kind of gpu/driver issue? Or has anyone experienced this before with a replacement screen and it's just a "dud"? Absolute downer as I've been waiting for it for a month or so and literally can't afford to buy another one at the moment, really bad year

I had a similar problem due to display incompatibility.
I have the phone marked FHD-D on the cable and the new display was FHD-A.
Or, the new display is not original...

Thanks for your reply and yeah, I'm figuring this is what is happening. However, the cable/screen are all one piece and were bought together, so is it possible they'd mismatch the cable to the screen themselves? idk, anyway, I've opened a dispute and have now been told that I'm stupid and that I have installed the screen incorrectly and not connected the battery (absolute gibberish).
I made a couple of videos for them, idk, have a look and see what you reckon but, indeed, to me this looks like straight up incompatibility as the screen isn't being driven properly by the phone (and, as you can see, the old busted screen behaves correctly)
Video of old/broken screen showing correct power response and on/off behaviour:
https://streamable.com/n16xo8
Here is the video of"new" screen which is clearly not correctly supported
https://streamable.com/28w8m2
Well hopefully I can get a refund for the part and get another. Can't even afford to order another at the moment until I get the refund :/ Lost my business last year due to covid and don't have access to state benefits or the like, so have just been trying to keep the head above water for the last year and a bit, so believe it or not something like this is a big expenditure for me these days :/

Yeah, it's a pain, I guess the display is just not going to work and I'll have to somehow get another - hopefully I can get the refund okay as those videos show it clearly doesn't work! The phone does actually start up, everything is going on fine aside from the screen. As I have to press on/off several times to get the screen to flicker, I don't have time to put in the unlock code and get into any menus, and then when it goes off I'm back to jockeying the button until it lights up again, at which point of course it's returning from a standby state so it's going back to the code input. BAH!
hello how are you 1 month ago I bought the second-hand mate 10 lite with the crashed but functional screen and I decided to buy a screen since the one I brought stopped working the touch screen everything was fine in the installation but the same thing happened to me as you understand normal but the screen does not work when the device is finished charging and putting the pattern turns on the screen and also that when I make a gesture it does not work I have to press a little hard and I realized that the screen came out a slight defect and I cannot request a refund since remove the security seals when installing it in your case if it came out with a major manufacturing defect
Note 2020 just look at the date of your post and still comment hehe greetings from Mexico
