I want to buy a tablet and I'm hesitant between the 10.1 and the iPad 2. I'm no expert and they both seem somehow identical to me, in your opinion what are the main differences and your recommendations. Thanks in advance!
Asus Transformer Prime
I'm just a junior member here, too, so I'm hoping not to get flamed on this one, but...
the biggest difference between the SG Tab 10.1 and the iPad2 is going to be the OS. Android vs iOS, the age-old debate.
I personally prefer Android, due to the possibility to delve into the innermost workings make adjustments, tweaks and change stuff to the way I like it. iOS is a bit cleaner, and faster, but without some serious hacking you can't change very much of the inner workings. Its like buying a Lambo or an old muscle car (a GTO for example), they're both going to be fast...but chances are, if you want to modify or adjust something, its going to be a hell of a lot easier on the muscle car (Android). Whereas when you open the Lambo's (iOS) hood, you only see plastic housing which hides all of the real machinery.
Sure, the hardware specs are also going to vary a bit, but that's misleading because Apple products can do a lot with a lot less. But they're both going to be fast tablets, that basically have the computing power of an average notebook (excluding enterprise or gaming laptop).
But the reason I wanted to reply, is to suggest that you wait a month (or a couple of weeks) and check out the Asus Transformer Prime. The hardware specs are sic, and (again, on paper) dwarf the SGTab and the iPad. Don't get me wrong, I wanted a SGTab until about 2 weeks ago, too. But the Asus will beat them both, if my assumptions are correct.
The biggest advantage of the Asus...quad-core processing (with an alternate 5th) and the latest version of the Android OS. Ice Cream Sandwich. (disclaimer: you could probably load ICS onto the SGTab, but in doing so you might void a warranty)
My advice, hold out a few more weeks and investigate all options (read: Asus Transformer Prime).
Not sure why you would come to a Samsumg Tab forum to see if people would recommend the iPad... But seriously, there may be other places on the web where you would get a balanced view. I love the Samsung.
Jim
When people ask me for a recommendation the first questions I ask are, "Do you have a Smartphone and what OS is it, iOS or Android? How invested (paid apps) in your OS are you?" and, "Exactly what are you planning to use the tablet for?"
Once they answer those questions then I can give them an honest opinion.
Me? I was looking for something to replace my 11.6" netbook for travel and general email/internet use. My 10.1 is perfect for my needs. Spent a week in NYC with my Tab and didn't miss the netbook once. (plus getting it for $100 off at Staples didn't hurt either)
Please google the following, it might give you some help on your research:
Tech supremacy blogspot (Why Android)
It just talk about Android OS and Apple's iOS and it applies on both Phones and Tablets.

I have checked the Asus on GSM Arena and the specs are great but does not make much difference to me compared to the SG Tab 10.1 and the iPad 2.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace phone with Gingerbread. I have very few paid apps on my phone. I plan to use the tablet for entertainment and simply being online; emailing, Facebook... etc
So, what do you recommend?
tommydorsey
I just trust the forum here, and I thought many who had already purchased the SG Tab 10.1 and considered the iPad 2 as well, and would have some good pointers.

I read the article, it's helpful, thanks man!
So you will basically just buy the tabled and use it as is.. you dont care about modding or anything like that.
I would recommend the ipad then.

The big question is what does that quad core get you. It is no easy task coding a thread efficient app. gods it took like 6 years before any core advantaged apps came out for the pc and those are still far n few to this day. Reality is most of your android apps in the next 2 years will be single threaded which means all things being equal frequency not core count is your performance driver. You might get some advantage in multitasking but that remains to be seen how the os takes advantage of the cores

I used to have an iPhone 3GS and a iPod Touch 3G 64GB. After moving to an Android device (phone), and later on getting the Samsung Galaxy 10.1" wifi model, I am extremely happy that I switched to Android. It's so much less locked down, and the flexibility is there to do just about anything.
* Manage the filesystem
* Live wallpapers
* Widgets
* Arbitrary device <--> device bluetooth transfers
* CPU overclocking
* Install custom ROMs with root access
* Custom recovery ROM (make full system images)
* etc.?
The only major complaint I have is User Interface (UI) performance, however I am confident that Ice Cream Sandwich will be solving much of that with GPU UI rendering. I really can't wait to get a solid build of ICS on my Galaxy 10.1 ... it's going to be incredible! The hardware is *perfect* except for the lack of a SD card slot -- either way, that doesn't bother me too much. I can store a full season of TV shows on the smaller 16GB size.
tl;dr Get the Samsung Galaxy 10.1"!

Thats why I got the gtab 10.1
But from what M_Shaaban said he doesn't want to do any of that with his device. He just wants to read email.. facebook and browse the internet.
Dont you think the ipad will be a smoother experience for him ?

For right now, probably yes. If you think longer term, once he gets a tablet, he may end up wanting to do more with it, once he realizes what it's capable of.
IMO, the iPad is nice and easy because Apple just blew up an iPod. With the same restrictions, the biggest is still having to rely on outside sources provided by apple. So if your on a plane you wont have access to documents and other such files that an iPod would not support.
Galaxy Tab using Android can run completely independant. And I think that's how people get confused. Trying to make it work like an old palm or apple device. ”How do I make it work with my computer”. My answer is always , I don't! Except to transfer large volumes of media or documents. Free music downloads? Yup. Torrenting? sure. Document viewing, editing and creation and stored locally? Done. If you want a cloud service you can choose from a variety of sources for that. And the best part for me? Using Gmail syncing, my tab, RAZR, and even my BlackBerry and N8 are in sync OTA (meaning cross platform abilities). My computer is literally for storage these days. Or flashing Odin or other hacker style stuff.
iPad vs SGTab
I didn't mean say that the quad core will make all the difference. Point well made, to multi-threaded apps. I've only been coding for about 3 years, and have only been recently introduced to multi-threading. I say 'introduced' because I've basically only seen it in a classroom environment as basically a proof of concept. We never got into the useful aspects of it. But I would think that multi-cores could dramatically improve multi-tasking. But again, I'm a layperson in these respects and not ashamed to admit that I'm in this conversation over my head.
I think the biggest advantage (aside from weight, dimensions, and aforementioned computing power) of the Asus over the SGTab is ICS. ICS does have some pretty cool features and although the Asus is being shipped with Honeycomb, its upgrade ready. This could be better for a novice user in that he could receive the upgrade without having to root brand new hardware.
For your requirements of facebook, email and internet, I recommended an iPad 2. It's simple, easy to use, and pretty much works out of the box. No tinkering required (or allowed). It has a better GPU, too, if you decide to do a little mobile gaming.
If eventually, you decide you want more out of tablet than what iOS can offer, you can always sell it and get an android tablet. Apple products are easy to sell and have, generally, a higher resale value compared to android devices.
As for me, I'm immensely enjoying my Galaxy Tab 10.1. I thought about waiting for the Transformer Prime, but I realized that for my needs, the Galaxy tab is more than capable. Email, internet, books, comics, movies and the occasional wind-up knight.

To help you understand more about two tablets I would suggest that you give the community a bit more information on what you gonna do with the tablet?
Is it just for basic stuff? (Internet,Email,Videos)
Or are you going to use it more for gaming?
Pretty sure that once you clarified that, people would start helping you properly.
I needed a tablet, to write, surf, multimedia device, etc. As I also needed a new phone I wanted them to link easily.
I purchased the GT 10.1 3G 16GB for about USD 650/- and added to it Samsung Galaxy Y for about USD 125. The screen resolution of the phone is not the greatest, but I don't care as I carry normally in any case the tablet.
For less then USD 800, I got an in my opinion excellent phone and a great tablet, which do everything I need. Had no problems with Norton rings, or any light leakage worth mentioning. Market is great. Even Adobe Touch applications came earlier on Android market then the Apple App store. This maybe tells something about what the future holds.
Apple is known for selling outdated tech for outrageous prices. So, if you are not a diehard apple fan, I would think thrice, before I dump my money into something which is not only expensive for the tech offered, but also limits my choice for the simple reason, that the former CEO of Apple, believed that all customers are complete idiots who can not make a choice for themselves.
Ipad is so limited, no Widgets, no flash support, even email is limited to attach photos only unless you use a third party application to send a document file for example, if you received a wmv file by email for example you cannot play it because it's not supported by apple...
Android is simple to use and you can do everything you need.

I appreciate all the valuable input. I need to ask about gaming, how about the graphics and available games? Does the Galaxy Tab 10.1 offer a good gaming experience and HD games?
If you like being told what to do, go for the iPad.
If you like being in control of what your device does, go for the GT10.1.
Did anyone see this?
My understand is the Windows RT Slate comes with a full version of MS Office. How can anyone compare this to a Kindle Fire? Why is it that any time MSFT introduces something people say all sorts of bizarre things about it but with Apple they will pay any price for subpar hardware?
In my opinion, the RT version shouldn't cost more than the iPad. It's a new product and there aren't as many apps as there are on iPad.

I disagree with you, any windows rt tablets should cost about as much as android tablets fall into while the Intel tablets should cost about the same as some of the higher end ipads
right now windows 8 has about as many apps as android tablets do when it comes to metro apps but if you're running an Intel based tablets you have desktop apps and games along side of metro apps and games
good price, lets see if they include office.
The competition is ON but please le's not get ahead of ourselves. Microsoft already has their pricing range set. The Kindle or iPad have different hardware set Compairing different things here. It's all about what you prefer and can afford!
Happy buying!
Who needs a bunch of apps if the OS is built correctly?

What would you rather have Words With Friends or a full blown version of Office on your tablet? Furthermore I believe IE10 will have flash support built in. I notice a lot of Apps are there because tablets and phones can't use a lot of websites correctly. What would you rather have a full blown working browser or a clutter of apps?
I can't leave my laptop at home and travel with any of the major tablets. I need Office, Photoshop, and a full blown browser. I hate it when I get on the reservation page of a hotel and the tablet can't pull it up correctly. I can't book or cancel rooms half the time on that thing. You've got to get an app for that. So annoying. Seriously I just looked at the start menu of my desktop and besides the built in stuff that comes with Windows 7 I have Office, Photoshop, Adobe reader, VLC, Firefox, and pretty much nothing else.

you cant rely on office so heavily, that's why windows mobile failed but i do agree with you, this will be one of the first productive tablets instead of the play ones, but they need to make IE faster, after using IE10 on my tab i have to say it sucks just as much as all the other IE versions did, now im just playing the waiting game for google to fix their touch support in the chrome browser before i make the switch to using chrome

I'm not "relying on office so heavily." Plus office on any small phone screen has limited utility. Office on a Surface is a whole different matter. You have a full keyboard and trackpad. You even have a USB port so you can use a mouse. On the Pro Surface you can even run photoshop. My point is I can leave everything at home and just take a Surface and my Windows Phone on a trip and I am set. Office, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Firefox cover 95% of my computing needs. I don't need a million and one apps. If I need to check weather, stock quotes, news, etc I can just go online. I have a full keyboard and mouse if I wish.
I could never go on a trip with just an ipad and a phone. No way. I've been burned too many times. Comparing a Surface which is a fully functional machine to an ipad which is an expensive glorified toy is ridiculous.
I'm into music production, I can have the full version of my music software on the 86 version that's gonna change things alot. My friend who is a producer he has two iPads and is getting a third one, that are loaded with every music app you get but the still has to use his desktop or laptop to get any work done, I'll be able to do it with one device.

Plus people are forgetting that there's gonna be many more windows slates out other than ms some may have even better specs the ms surface has, hp,Dell, etc. This is gonna be the death of the desktop year, no one is gonna get a desktop because the surface devices can work as full computer the 86 version has a mini port , an the rt has a HD video port, plus all the other stuff

The surface RT will NEVER be as low or lower than $199. You'd be lucky to see it under $599. Remember, it will out spec the other Tablet/Slates in the market and surely outdo the iPad. Microsoft is sick of being screwed and laughed at, they're now going to show the MFG's what the mean when they said you need to do this and that (spec wise).
Pricing
I wrote a comment about this earlier posting why it will be around that price range.

Google will lunch Nexus 7 which will costs under 200$ in the base version.
I think if Microsoft wants to be competitive in the tablet market needs to sell its Surface under 199$.
599$ is very expensive.
Price seems too good to be true

for 599 i can buy a windows 32bit tablet and an android tablet, microsoft isnt stupid so i know it wont be priced that high for the rt tablet, they need to compete with ipads remember, and just cause it out specs and out does the ipad doesnt mean people will buy it, android tabs are already cheaper and faster than the ipad but the ipad still out sells android tablets(not including ereaders)

i dont think microsoft is going after android as much as they are going after the ipad
android tablets are cost effective because android is a free OS while windows is licensed to manufactures, if its anything i think the cheapest windows rt tablet will cost around 250-290 depending on specs which tbh isnt outrageous

This
People who think it needs to cost LESS than $199 are smoking crack. It needs no such thing.
What it DOES need to do is be priced competitively with entry level iPad, which means around $399-499 for the ARM version. The Intel version can get away with ultrabook pricing because, well, it's basically an ultrabook--just with a badass design .
Now that we've seen the Nexus 7 Android tablet at $199 with similar guts to the RT version (as long as we assume the RT version will be Tegra 3) but with a smaller screen, but with more features, it's fair and safe to say that we should expect reasonable pricing for Surface on Windows RT.
But with that said, I don't expect Surface, even in ARM version, to be the cheapest Windows 8 tablet. I believe we'll see third parties offering less expensive--probably more cheaply built, too--Windows RT tablets. How low will they go?
Well, I guess only time will tell. On the bright side, MS has been very smart with the development of both Windows 8 and Surface--they won't fall into the lawsuit trap that Android makers have with Apple.

I think Microsoft should 'cheapen' the RT to compete with Nexus 7, The more competition, the better.
guys u need to remmember that u pay some cash for the windows OS.When u buy a laptop with installed windows in it it u pay around 200$ (in Bulgaria) for the licence more compared to a laptop or pc without OS.So im 100% sure that the cost of the RT version will be will be included in the tablet so lets hope that the OS is around 70% so the tablet can be priced around 250 300$.I think that the RT version starting from 250 300$ is a pretty good price.About the win8 pro i gues 700/800$ +
After having the asus transformer prime for about the last 4 months or so, I can gladly say I would rather pay extra for RT. If they update it like they do other windows then it's worth it. Remember with a free OS YOU GET EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
New Galaxy Tab uses an Intel processor
Combined Galaxy and Ativ unveiling
Here's what I'm seeing with this news:
A. Samsung makes Galaxy/Ativ devices which are strikingly similar, possibly use same accessories
B. Samsung makes one device which runs both platforms, but can be purchased as each platform separately, each with slightly different hardware to match a price point (E.G. Galaxy tab $400 with 2GB RAM, Galaxy/Ativ $600 with 4GB RAM, keyboard dock):fingers-crossed: :good:
C. Samsung simply unveils separate devices, but the Galaxy is jailbroken, and since it runs on an Intel chip, Windows 8 can be installed via OEM license.:victory:
What do you think? Will any of it happen? I sure hope! This would be the ultimate device... even better than the Surface!
PLEASE SAMSUNG??? :fingers-crossed:
UPDATE: GGGGAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!! SAMSUNG DID IT! The Samsung Ativ Q!
I know this might be a long shot but I am kind of hoping that they release one device that integrates both OS's into one, that would be very awesome and something i might buy

AAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! ASUS HAS DONE IT! This is the most amazing thing ever, hopefully it's not phantomware (it sure doesn't look like it!). Asus today unveiled the Transformer Book Trio, which runs full Windows 8 on the keyboard dock, and Android on the tablet itself. It actually has two entirely separate systems, but they switch seamlessly. Unfortunately it's not two systems on one processor, meaning if this comes to market, it's gonna cost a small fortune! Anyway, here's the link!
I think the trio is the exact opposite of seamless in my opinion.
It is pretty much a windows laptop with a dock for an android tablet which then becomes the screen.
I couldn't work on that. Working on an office document, pull the screen off for some portability at some point, windows and my document are now gone. Thanks for that Asus. That particular scenario could be alleviated with Google docs or similar but there are others problems like it that wouldnt be so easily fixable.
In my opinion. If you want to put two operating systems on the same device then just frigging dual boot. Plenty of atom netbooks used to dual boot between windows 7 starter and android, sisters one does.
Asus Trio
Well, as excited as I am for this - I have to say, if the tablet is undocked, and wont run Windows 8, it is a deal breaker for me. If they made it so that I could dual boot Android / Windows 8 off the tablet, plus dock it into the keyboard for WIndows 8 + dedicated GPU, I would be sold, but to only run Android on the tablet is just plain stupid. Ill wait until I can have a true hybrid device that is not compromised. I feel that they are coming, they just need a bit more work by the OEM's
Well yes this stuff is coming but I honestly think being able to dual boot OS is a silly feature for a consumer release product, who wants to be switching operating system just to run [other] apps on another OS? If you want android and windows in one tablet use bluestacks, if that isn't good enough stop fooling around and either get one or the other or pick one that will allow you to configure dual boot yourself.
Samsung just announced their hybrid tablet!!!
Samsung is the largest tablet vendor outside of Apple, so it's noteworthy to see what it brings on the Windows side. Ignoring the AIO/laptop varieties, Sammy's sole Windows tablet, the Ativ Tab 3, disappoints at $699 (w/ keyboard cover) and only a Z2760 Clovertrail instead of Bay Trail.
Unless Samsung has more announcements in store, I don't see a Haswell tablet (or even hybrid) model. In fact, there isn't a hybrid except for the Franken-Q slider, which isn't a mainstream model.
If these are all of Samsung's entries for Windows this year, it's a fairly anemic line-up.
Hi,guys
Do you have a multi touch tablet PC? Or are you now considering of buying one? Here, I will talk something with it for you. As we all know, in these recent years, the change made by these devices on our Tech World is really a dominating one as the number of brands and products have been increased in a high amount.
The most famous and recent example is Windows 8 whereas the existing Android and iOS are seamlessly continuing their superb journey along with new features and implementation with daily life's needs.
All these activities by major technology companies are showing that multi touch (www。multi-touching。com/) tablet PCs are about to dominate the contemporary laptops and desktops in a few years.
A tablet PC is unlike from your touchscreen Laptop or touchscreen Desktop just because of its features like comfort, lightweight design, both business and personal use, features to work as an entertainment device etc. So, it's certain that you won't ever wrong to buy a multi touch tablet PC according to your techy/geeky needs.
Moreover, a big quarrel is taking place (as public says) between tablet PC manufacturers including Apple. Samsung, and Microsoft by releasing their products simultaneously with tremendous features to compete with rivals. But for a normal buyer is not concerned about these quarrels and bets since he/she just wants a tablet PC for their own use.
Since the market is filled with hundreds of touchscreen (www。multi-touching。com/touchscreen/) brands and products, most probably it'll hard for you to choose a best tablet PC for your use. And, if you're choosing the wrong touchscreen one for you, needless to say that your money will be gone worst. Therefore, there are a bunch of details you should concern about before buying a tablet PC for business/personal use. Now, stop here, do you how to choose a best multi touch tablet PC for yourself?
Nice essay bro. So, what does this got to do with the Galaxy Tab 10.1?

Do you think that we'll see Note 8.0 S-note integration in the near future ?
I would most certainly think so. Seems to me that Evernote will (sort of) replace (or enhance) functionalities of S-Note and I couldn't see why this shouldn't work on other S-Pen-devices.
Probably we might have to wait somewhat longer though.

I don't think it would be wise of Samsung to not include the feature for other S-Pen-devices. There are lots of people who use a note II (and soon note 3) as their phone AND the Note 8 or 10 as their tablet. Not being able to sync between those just wouldn't make sense.
Sent from my brain using neural networks.
Manual sync of my Note 2 and 10.1 has screwed up all my notes. Some are even locked and I can't figure out how to unlock these. Hopefully Sammy has fixed this cross sync issues.

After repeated loss of notes to samsung sync, I can guarantee you dropsync is a way to go.

:good: Agreed. I started using Dropsync after losing some notes on Samsung Sync. I tried Evernote Sync but it was flaky, as was Google Docs.
Dropsync works perfectly.

dropsync is one of the most essential apps i have ever used...i love it
I don't know about you guys but when I use dropSync it didn't work properly it constantly cause my snote to say syncing notes which took about a minute to finish
I was using it to sync my nose between my Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy note 10.1 but found it way too sluggish to work properly and use it as my daily driver for syncing notes between the two devices
this is why I really like the the evernote integration because not only will it sync between devices but I can sync it with my desktop as well
but curiously I haven't been able to find a single video or a tutorial on how this is supposed to work can somebody like one
I just bought the Note 3, and am a huge Evernote user so the new integration on the new version of S-Note has been awesome for me. The downside of having the Note 8.0 now is what is mentioned above. I used to use Dropsync to sync my S-Notes folders between my Note 2 and my Note 8.0. Now that the file types are different, .spd files rather than the older S-Note's .snb files, I can no longer do that. I even tried syncing S-Notes using my Samsung account hoping they would have some kind of conversion happen behind the scenes-no dice. I can view Notes created on my Note 3 (.spd) on my Note 8.0 via Evernote, or using this app I found on the Samsung App Store http://www.samsungapps.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.spdviewer , but I can no longer edit those new notes on my 8.0 due to the new file type. I'm really hoping Samsung hurries up with an update so I can have the new version of S-Note on my 8.0 and get back to my old syncing ways. If you want to know more about how Evernote is working with the Note 3, which will be the same on the new 10.1 2014 Edition, feel free to ask whatever questions you'd like. I've tested that a bunch now as well and have been happy with the results.

Hi Nate, I hope you are well and happy.
I currently use an original N7000 and in March 2014 (when my contract is up) I'll be looking to upgrade. I'll probably buy a new Galaxy note 3 as a handset (I'm in need of a new watch as well and the Galaxy Gear is a possibility) also air command looks sweet and I'm keen to try it.
I'm also hoping to buy my first tablet PC before January as I'm a motorcycling Computer Science under-grad and looking to reduce the weight I need to carry to university by leaving my 11.6 inch Acer Aspire 1825ptz touchscreen netbook at home and taking a thinner lighter tablet to lectures. I've been using Evernote for over 7 months now and love it, although I miss S-Note functionality a bit (running cyanogen 10.2-20131107-nightly-n7000 mod.) I was considering buying the 8 inch Galaxy Note but having read this thread I'm more inclined to get the 10.1 inch 2014 Note now.
I'll mostly be reading papers (.pdf) on it in the Kindle app (see attached) which I'll want to annotate as I'm reading, view powerpoint presentations in it (I use kingston office for this on my N7000 so I for see no problems with the 10.1 inch) again that I'll want to take notes onto.
I guess what I'd like to know please:
1. How exactly do the 2 apps integrate? Is it you open SNote and it's got a share to ever note option? Or vica versa? Or are they completely integrated into one app?
2. Do you think a Galaxy 3 / Gear / 10.1 inch 2014 Note is the optimal solution for the remainder of my studies and then more importantly do you think it'd be a good solution for a trainee teacher? (yrs 11 - 18)
3. Did I read somewhere that the 10.1 inch or the Galaxy 3 is going to have an IR blaster? (I could use a decent remote control)
Thanks in advance for any help / youtube review / links to relevant posts / URL's you can give.
All I want is Inking support in Evernote. The only reason I use S-Note at all is because of its default support for inking notes, but if I could use the stylus in Evernote on both my Windows 8 and Android devices, I'd be set.
