Need to update from KitKat 4.4.4 - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've got a developers edition Galaxy Note 4 that I bought directly from Samsung 7ish years ago and it's still my daily driver. I rooted it immediately upon getting it and have never updated it past the KitKat version of Android that it came with. I rely on Google Voice and just got a message saying that Voice would soon stop running on KitKat so I need to upgrade my version of Android.
I've been out of the scene for a long time (as evidenced by my still using a 7 year old phone) so I'm looking for advice on a ROM to move to. My requirements are:
Must have root.
Must support Google Voice
Battery life is very important to me. This is one of the main reasons I stayed with KitKat. When later versions came out people were reporting much worse battery life. Not sure if this is still the case.
Must support s-pen. I use this quite frequently.
I prefer to stay with something close to stock. I don't need flashy 3D launcher effects of anything. I've got a Galaxy Tab S7+ and I'm familiar with (and like) recent versions of Samsung's UI.
GPS must be functional. I use Maps and Waze for navigation same need to continue. This probably won't be an issue, but I mention it because I remember some ROMS having trouble with this years ago.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It's been so long since I've done this stuff I don't remember where to start. In addition to being rooted, I've got what is probably a very old version (2.8.1.1) of TWRP installed. Not sure if it would matter, but I'm also still on one of Verizon's old truly unlimited plans.
I've been doing some research and unless anyone here has a better idea I'm guessing the best move for me would be to upgrade to one of the official Android 6 builds that Samsung released for this phone. From what I gather, custom ROMs do not fully support the S-pen. Is that correct?
Do any pre-rooted versions of the Samsung 6.0.1 release exist that I could flash with my existing version of TWRP? I've seen some discussion of updating bootloaders but I'm not really sure what that's all about. Like I said, it's been many years since I've done this stuff.
Any and all advice and instruction and links appreciated.

I'd leave it be and ditch Gookill Voice... enjoy the better battery life.

I would, but I've used Google Voice for everything. In all these years I've never given anyone my actual carrier phone number. They've all gotten my Google Voice number.
I'm glad you left your comment though. It reminded me that battery life getting worse was one of the reasons I never did the update.
Not real sure what I'm going to do. I might just limp along as it is for a month and maybe buy the Galaxy Fold 3 when it comes out.

I use the a Custom ROM which is Android 6.0.1 for my SM-N910P called Q15_Plus_TidBits_VB3.0.1. So far I get about 14 hours on the battery with average use, and that is without using the battery saving modes. It is stable, and quite honestly runs everything (including Google Voice which I rely on). The only complaint I can think of is that I don't have a 'power button flashlight' feature installed.

That sounds great! Does this rom maintain support for the s-pen?

Where the hell are those AOSP ROMs?!

I'm starting to be really pissed off, what's problem with N3? I don't get it, i saw kondik's photo on twitter like 2 months ago and yet there is no even nighty nighty build or ultranighty, nothing. Other devices like G2, Z1 got AOSP long time ago.

Developers have lives. plus if you read CMs site and blogs and posts you'll see that schoolwork comes first for a couple of them, plus they probably won't bother with the Note 3 until KitKat is released... If you are that desperately craving AOSP why did you buy a Samsung device? A company that is notoriously slow with updates/ROM stuff etc.... - Just sell it and go buy a Nexus.
Aosp stands for android open source project. Aka stock android.

That's the answer. Samdung has an absolutely horrible history in the Open Source community, and it's not getting better anytime soon. Anybody who wants AOSP/CM ROMS should NEVER buy a Samdung device.
They do make great devices, but they have the worst attitude toward the dev community, routinely providing incomplete and/or outdated sources and/or the absolutely bare minimum required for a questionable level of GPL compliance, and they'll never provide userspace drivers, which is where 90% of the problems are in supporting their devices.
It's just a reality, and anyone hoping for full compliance and an open and friendly attitude toward AOSP/CM community is delusional.

Give me an SD Card option or at least 64GB option and I will do it asap, that's all i ask, i don't even need removable battery and 5.7 inch screen, just SDCard or bigger storage option and powerful processor(Snap 800 is fine!). Please don't tell me about "mighty cloud services" i want normal storage for my music.
But guys tell me one thing, there is no such thing like Galaxy Note 2 google edition and there is a CM rom, there is no LG G2. Sony Z1 and others Google edition roms, and they have CM or any other stock android variations literally DAYS after release, note has none, totally, literally, NOTHING. Why no love for note ? I really don't get it. :crying:
Few people are ready to give up the support for S-Pen and adopt AOSP based roms. Besides the S-Pen is the main reason people buy the note series.
I actually bought the phone because it makes an awesome reading device. I only used s pen to try it out. i yet have to find the killer feature I would use it more often for.
I'm rooted, added a different launcher and some widgets and it comes now pretty close to what I wanted. If you want other roms, be patient. It took long for the razr HD but I finally put pacman rom on it. So I'd say it comes down to what you really want. If the latest FW is top priority you have to live with small onboard memory. I prefer the big screen and have all my apps and music right on the phone on a 64gb sd card including navigation and maps. I can't stand all this cloud stuff for different reasons, the biggest one being privacy. But these are just my 2 cent.

Pretty same as me, i just need storage for all my music and i was really tired because my iphone 4 32GB was almost always fullfiled to the max, I hate deleting and need to choose between tracks. The S-Pen is working, i don't know what's about that, note 2 has tons of AOSP ROMs and many peoples are fine with that.

Same reasons here. But big screen in a small frame was what sold it. Almost got the oppo, but besel and weight made note3 the best hardware. Figured the snapdragon would make this device fully aosp supported, but so far no love.
SPen..? I've got gmd pen gestures, papyrus, better screenshot, etc. I can easily have all the "tw functions" i need on an aosp rom. Samsung has nothing that I can't get better versions of through play
Imagine this hardware and omnirom.. I can't wait, and as soon as an alfa is out I'm on it..

Where did you download the pacman rom form i can find it for the s3, but not the Note3?
The dev community seems to be struggling at the moment (at least with this and the Motorola moto g).
It's a sad time when you have to buy a phone with the possibility of never being able to leave stock firmware (luckily moto g is almost vanilla)

Pacman is not for the Note 3 yet. I wrote that it took a while until it came to my Motorola Razr HD.
I would absolutely LOVE an AOSP stock rom for my Note 3. Something like the google play edition of the S4 would be perfect... really surprised this has not been done yet, especially with the hardcore specs of the Note 3, hopefully OmniROM will provide our needs!

Has Samsung promised 5.1.1 official update for Note 3?

Has Samsung announced publicly that they will upgrade Note 3 to 5.1.1 or that they will NOT do it?
Or is it all still up in the air and we have to guess what they'll do with the rest of the official Note firmware updates?
I'm aware of AOSP/CM 5.1.1 builds for Note 3, but I'm interested in the 5.1.1 Samsung official Touchwiz ROM future.
Anybody found any info / roadmap on this?
No word yet. It's been confirmed for the Note 4, Note Edge and S5, but nothing yet on the Note 3 and S4.
Samsung knows the 5.0 firmware for the Note 3 is severely broken, so they might choose to update the Note 3 to 5.1, but they might also stick to Google's 18 months/2 major updates contract and drop support for the device.
Given that they don't seem to give a **** about Note users anymore, the latter seems the most likely. They want to force us all onto the S6 Edge +.
LOL! How is 5.0 "severely broken" for Note 3?
Anyway, to OP, no, Samsung hasn't officially announced anything yet, but I believe 5.1 will come for our phones, probably in couple of months time.

Aside from the memory leaks, errors, bluetooth connectivity issues, wifi issues and battery drains?
Oh no, it's absolutely perfect. Everyone is just lying about it, that's all.
I mean, we totally don't get about 8 people a day asking us to revert their devices back to 4.4, we're just making those figures up. That's what providers and tech support people do, right?
Or did anyone really think the several months delay for the larger versions (BTU, DBT, XEF) were because Samsung forgot? No, it's because 5.0 had a lot of bugs Google left in that Samsung couldn't get fixed.
(Okay, okay, I'll stop. I should probably just go to sleep, my sarcasm seems to be overloading. I've been up for 72 hours straight, I think my brain has simply dropped all functions besides its basic survival instinct, which in my case appears to be comprised almost entirely of sarcasm. No offense meant, I am merely quite severely sleep deprived   (Also, I just noticed, on Tapatalk that emoticon is just hilarious. It's pink! Hihihihiihihihihi... )
5.0 is the Vista of the Android world. Hopefully 5.1 will be better, though I doubt it.

Android 5.0 for the NOTE 3 is rubbish. Since the update i have multiple lag problems with my note 3 but the most severe is the bluetooth connectivity problems. I can`t use my smartwatches (Moto 360 and Pebble Time) anymore. They drop connection all day long, unable to reconnect, android wear saying connecting .... or displays that my Moto 360 is connected but it is not !
Android 5.0 made my life hell. My phone still thinks that is connected to my car stereo when is not, in a prone call i have to manually disable bluetooth when i leave my car so i can speak.
On Android 4.4.4 bluetooth was working perfectly. Now i`m searching a way to downgrade to Android 4.4.4 ...

Are you sure you are using 5.0 for Samsung on your Note 3, or probably on something else?
Anyway, jokes aside, really?
Memory leaks? What's that? I am dumb. Please enlighten me.
Errors? What errors?
Bluetooth connectivity? I use BT for around 6-8 hours a day, and not once my BT got disconnected!
WiFi issues? I download 3-4 GB from my phone, EVERY DAY. WiFi doesn't disconnect, not once. I however manually power off my router once every 3 or 4 days so that my ISP doesn't start to monitor my otherwise high usage at a stretch.
Battery drains? As I have said a hundred times before, battery life is much better in LP than it was on KK!
Are you sure you are not trolling?
is not just not working. I have never rooted my phone, only installed OTA updates. Android 5.0 is the worst. Tried everything, including wipe data/full reset, wipe cache, format SD card, the same bluetooth issues. Can`t use my Pebble Time .....
While it's not as bad as ShadowLea described, I do get occasional battery drains, a dreaded Camera and Gallery lag and heating up/throttling while playing intensive games (Such problems were not present in Kitkat). While the Lollipop update brought some interesting features and new much needed visual improvements the phone for me performs worse than Kitkat (but it's not that bad). Now will I downgrade? Of course not (add the fact that I don't know how xD). Let's hope that we get the 5.1.1 update or even Marshmallow (Though knowing Samsung that's a bit far fetched =P)
Just downgraded my Note 3 to Android 4.4.2 this morning. So far my Pebble Time works like a dream, no more dropped connection, no more unable cu connect, all bluetooth issues are gone.
Because i never rooted my Note 3 and downgraded to stock firmware, the downgrade process was pretty simple using ODIN.
Let's not make this "is 5.0.x" good/bad - thread. Some are having issues. Some are not. Some would like to have 5.1.1 with stagefright and other patches, regardless.
The question is: will Samsung deliver 5.1.1 (or later) for Note 3 or or will they not honour their "2 years of updates" or not. If they will. I think I'm done with Samsung for a while (esp. with Note 5 being what it is).
Yeah, Samsung made a special 5.0 ROM for me only, which doesn't give anywhere near as problems as mentioned above!
Some people just like bashing TouchWiz, however I thought those were kidzzzz only, but until now. Then they switch to some other third class OEM, get tired and come back to Samsung, and then they keep their mouth shut. That's how it generally goes.
There's no need to be so arrogant. If you're satisfied with how your phone works, doesn't mean that software works flawlessly, especially on other devices that you couldn't see. There may be some failed upgrades, software conflicts, or rare race conditions that prevent some users from enjoying their Note 3 devices.
Fortunately my experience with 5.0 on Note 3 is much better than with 5.0 on Nexus 10.
Still I couldn't see any mention of >5.0 upgrade for Note 3, which is a bit sad, especially when there are exploits out there, and it'll soon be 2 years old.
I found this post claiming 5.1.1 is coming to Note 3 according to Samsung UK. However, I'd take it with a grain of salt, as August is almost gone, still no 5.1.1 not even news about release and often the local offices in Europe do not know the final details about what the Korean giant had decided.
Galaxy Note 3 receives the Android 5.1.1 update soon

I do not troll. I have never understood what the point of trolling is. What do people find so appealing about it?
I'm simply speaking from the experience of getting far, far too many reports of problems with 5.0. That, and the fact that Samsung themselves have, repeatedly, admitted that 5.0 is extremely flawed. If the lads at Samsung's dev department tell you 5.0 is broken, it's broken.
Have I updated? Hell no. Absolutely bloody not. 5.0 has white menus, that's a no-go for me. Besides, NB7 works perfectly for me (7+ hours screen-on time!). I'm a great fan of the "If it ain't broken, don't fix it" principle.
Memory leaks are when apps use more memory than they should. So when an app that normaly uses only 50MB RAM is suddenly using 900MB RAM, when there's nothing it actually needs it for.
Wait, your ISP has a problem with 4GB a day? That's... wow. I average about 700GB a month on my laptop alone.
Not every Bluetooth connection has problems. Older Bluetooth protocols have problems, some newer ones work fine. (This is a problem from Google, not Touchwiz. Unless Nexus devices run TW these days )

Unfortunatelly, the experience of one does not equal the experience of all. If you don't have issues doesn't mean nobody else does. (Although I am very glad for you that yours works flawlessly! )
I do not bash TW. Hello, I'm on pure 100% stock. That'd be a bit hypocritical. TW works fine, it's Android 5.0 itself that is broken.
It doesn't just affect Samsung, 5.0 is malfunctioning on all devices.

LOL! All the articles are more than three four months old! Maybe there was some memory management issues on early LP releases, but that doesn't count. I don't see much problem (if any at all!) with apps closing/ restarting upon going back into them. I use a six year old Sony GV435 BT headset, LOL!
And as I said, Samsung didn't make a special ROM for me, nor I am the person who just runs a dull device without any kind of modifications! I talk half an hour a day, more mostly, with BT connected, I keep at least a dozen apps open in background, the phone is running for 18 straight days now! So as long as Samsung didn't make a special ROM me those mentioned problems/ bugs are terribly exaggerated. 50 MB app is taking 900 MB in LP. Nah, I sure don't know what trolling is, my DNA lacks that, but I am getting a sense of what trolling is, because when you are around trolls, some effects will be unknowingly pushed into oneself.

Yeah, then you report those problems in Google's community, not here. If there any problems with Lollipop then it is Google's problem, not Samsung's.
Google fixed problems in 5.1.1 this is why we wait news from Samsung. If lollipop is latest update for note 3, they should fix all the bugs.

Updating possibilities for Samsung Galaxy Note 2

My note 2 is updated to 4.4.2. It is rooted. I have Xposed framework installed. I use the phone -as phone, for messaging (WhatsApp), browsing, note taking (Handwritten) - mostly using "Write" APP, and some illustrations using "Write" or sketching Apps. I use Google Handwriting Input as keyboard for English and Marathi (Indian Language).
The software is showing the age and phone has become slow. Cleaning provides some temporary relief. To address this "problem" and to experience the latest version of Android, I'm looking to update it to whatever is possible. I scanned through many threads and found out following:
1. There are quite a few Marshmallow ROMs for Note 2. CM 13 and Resurrection ROMS seem to be most used/discussed. There are few more (like Bliss), based on CM.
2. These ROMs, though provide latest Android version, do not provide the access to S pen.
3. For accessing S - pen DN4 seems to be the most preferred choice. As I understand, It is android version 4.4.4 - not the latest.
4. S-Pen accessibility/functionality is also available through SPenCommand APP (Paid). It's available for CyanogenMod, AOSP and MIUI ROMs.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions on choice of choice of ROM and any experiences on using SPenCommand with any Marshmallow ROM. Any pointers on what could be pitfalls, or, nasty surprises, in the process are most welcome.
Thanks and Regards
Vikas Garud, Pune, India.
I've tried most of roms available for note 2
Miui/RR Rom/Rubbaband and much more :|
it looks like Eclipse Rom by Ac is the best out there, its based on 4.4.4 but heavily themed like s7/N5 MM .
go for it
Thanks Iskander_mal for sharing your experience!
Eclipse V8
Let me tell you my opinion as a heavy flasher on Note 2, S3 and some other phones that I own.
So we're talking about Note 2 now.
If you need new stuff, very high android experience gor for Unofficial CM13 builds by Trafalgar Square: what's not working now on he's latest build: gps, youtube in Chrome, SD Card as internal storage.
If you want something stable and fast but you don't really need the newest android go for the Official CM 11. You get OTA updates almost every 1-2 weeks and new security updates. Everything I tested so far works there.
In my opinion OCM11 and UCM13 are the best ROMs for you.
Eclipse ROM is themed and optimized with Agni Kernel. I'm not using it. I'm more into stock android because stock is faster.

Thanks once again Iskander_mal. Just one question: Does this support S-Pen? Anything specific (APP?) required for getting the S-Pen functionality for scribbling?
Thanks,

Thanks "andrewKode" for detailed response. I am looking for something stable and fast. I'm not looking for cutting edge android features. Official CM11 seems to be the way to go for these requirements. Just one doubt: How do you get the S-Pen functionality? I don't need anything fancy - scribbling on some APP like "Write", or sketching on some APP would be sufficient for me. Off course, anything extra is welcome!
Thanks and regards

I remember when I first flashed CM10 on my galaxy note II back in early 2013, there was an app on Playstore called Papyrus. It almost had same features as the stock note taking app provided by Samsung. You can check it out.

Thanks. I was under impression that the stylus itself may not be supported. I've played around with Papyrus and it's good. I'm not particular about Samsung apps. All that I'm looking for is ability of the styles (S-Pen) to scribble something. Your response has relieved me.
Vikas Garud.
All custom roms support Stylus. Some touchwiz based custom roms also support Air Command features.
Note II was released with android jelly bean 4.1.1 which had a strange bug called Sudden Death Syndrome. That bug prompted me to root my phone and install custom ROM in it. But after flashing CM10 I missed Samsung's note taking app as I was by that time so much used to it. I was also looking for note taking app and came across papyrus.
Can someone help me root my Sprint (boost mobile) note 2? I know nothing about rooting or roms or any of that. Just letting everyone know. I'm not very tech friendly when it comes to rooting, roms, flashing or any of that. Thanks in advance! Oh and what would the benefits of rooting and installing those roms be? I have noticed my note 2 hasn't received any updates from Samsung like the person said it would when I bought it from them??

Marshmallow 5Gghz hotspot / Fast Charging
Im still looking for an appropriate upgrade for my CM 10.1 (4.2.2) install on my n7100.
I'm stuck on it since I've had quite the charging issues over time.
I use NEAK kernel to ensure fast charging (2100 mA) adjustable up to 2900 mA (but I don't know how realistic that is to achieve.
Any ideas on fast charging Kernels/ROMs?
Anyway I'm hoping that a new Marshmallow ROM gives access to establishing a 5Ghz wifi hotspot on the device.
In theory the API from Android 6.0 allows this.
Has anyone tried this OR if using a MM based ROM could you have a look?
I have that feeling though I'm not going to be able to get both
DN4 v2.1 makes you feel that you've got a touchwizz for note 4, seems to works great but I've flashed my efs also after flashing adblock host, wifi is stuck 15mins after boot... otherwise of you like samsung stuuf it's fun. btw I'm a total nub!
Then I've tried CM12.1 lollipop by Ivan, everything works, flashing host file with moab seems to introduce latency... Sometimes it did freeze. at this time VR was broken.
Now I stick with CM13 still by Ivan, even though it's not the latest, everything works flawlessly so far! As usual adding a few MB size file host is not perfect for latency flashed batch cm13, gapps nano, moab after being fully wiped.
Even if VR didn't work, it's no longer an issue.
By the way you may need the latest Bootloader, mine is PC1. There is a cap in BL, once reached a special version, you may not be able the remove it easily. I havent tried to remove that, because I'm a total nub and I've got only my daily device to play with
Globally, I was expecting much more trouble! Just try to fly everthing in a row, otherwise it did added extra freezes and latency in my case
hey i went through same problem as you are now.
i have note 2 and i am running resurrection remix marshmallow and to be honest i think its a better option to run this rom on our ageing device than going for stock 4.4.4 roms.
as for spen functionality ,look at my signature, there is a link that provides alternatives to touchwiz/spen functionality.
Honestly RR-MM is the best rom there for our phone<<<<personal preference of course
just try roms and see what fits your needs.
here is a link, which may help you for spen cynogen or aosp by fizzingbees

will there ever be android 6 on note 2?

Thanks "andrewKode" for detailed response. I am looking for something stable and fast. I'm not looking for cutting edge android features. Official CM11 seems to be the way to go for these requirements. Just one doubt: How do you get the S-Pen functionality? I don't need anything fancy - scribbling on some APP like "Write", or sketching on some APP would be sufficient for me. Off course, anything extra is welcome!
Thanks and regards

My friend, listen to me. Do not listen to anyone else here. If it wasn't for Cyanogenmod 13 and Android 6.0 I would have thrown my phone into trash by now. It was so bad and crappy and laggy (and all Androids before Lollipop were). You know people at google work hard to issue out new versions of android to improve performance and everything. Lollipop was a huge jump! They (samsung) didn't give us update to Lollipop or newer because you are expected to buy new Note 4 or something.
Recently I had to revert to stock rom (4.4) for a while and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was the same hardware, the same phone! How could just software make such a huge difference?
Now I see you use s-pen and that may be a problem (i lost my s-pen a while ago so I don't know how it goes).
Anyway, install any rom with android 6.0 and you'll see yorself what I'm talking about. If you don't like it you can always go back, but who in the world would do that?

regarding your battery charging,i just cant begin to understand why you want to charge your battery at such high mah, given that samsung stock kernel charges it around 1800-1900mah. I hope its not a phony kernel feature otherwise its a miracle that your battery hasnt exploded yet.
i am using agni kernel and you can max charge at 2000mah which is pretty fast given my phone charges from dead to 100% in 1 hr 30min.
for 5gh wifi api,i hope you know what you are talking about. i am in no way expert but having a api and actually having a hardware that support and make use of that api are two different concepts.
i have MM ,so if you want me to,i can check it((if you tell me how to))

I've tried most of roms available for note 2
Miui/RR Rom/Rubbaband and much more :|
it looks like Eclipse Rom by Ac is the best out there, its based on 4.4.4 but heavily themed like s7/N5 MM .
go for it

dont you feel that eclipse rom is somewhat heavy and slow when compared to RR-MM rom.

New stock A2017U best way from here?

Picked up the $330 deal from Newegg Ebay. The phone is charged and unmodded / not updated. The software it came with is A2017UV1.0.0B27. There is an update pending but I've not applied it yet. I'm well versed with ADB and fastboot coming from a long line of Nexus phones that I always root...
There seems to be lots of ways forward from here but I'd like to see what people recommend. It appears that an unlocked bootloader will make it so future updates cannot be applied. I've always unlocked in the past but I hope to get wifi calling (T-Mobile) in future updates (from what I understand that's on the way but not out yet?). If a non-stock rom allows wifi calling I'd be game for that as I typically am not a fan of how companies bloat the standard android rom.
Main things I want:
TWRP
(seamless?) root (primarily for AdAway and TiBackup)
Band 12
Wifi calling
Remove any potential ZTE spyware
What do you think? Unlock the bootloader and forget future ZTE updates? Keep it locked?
Thanks!
OTA updates work just fine with an unlocked bootloader. They do not however work if the system or recovery has been modified.
I ran stock for a few weeks. Recently switched to resurrection remix. It adds a lot of additional configuration ability. Most of the settings that were/are available in gravity box. GB is no longer possible until xposed is redeveloped for 7.
I'd say unlock the bootloader first, then either try stock or one of the aosp roms. Been on RR for just two days now, first impressions include bettery battery life and faster UI interaction.

Ahh... understood. Seamless is the way to go for future updates then. I'll unlock and take that route. Thanks much!

My personal experience with Lineage (never tried RR, but I guess it's close to lineage) is overall disappointment. Half of the apps I tried didn't work, especially some 3D games. The stock camera app is unbearably bad IMO, from comparisons I decided to make I hate the overall quality of the photos... ZTE's system is not even close to full of bloatware. The only added out of the box apps are WPS Office which comes in handy, AccuWeather which is kinda questionable, true; ZTE Cares which mostly tells you to reboot your phone if you have a problem (1.14 mb, never open), this WeShare thing that you can ignore completely, and the stock music, browser, etc and Gapps. Even the calculator and some kinda useful apps are all packed on one app, and you can add shortcuts... Can't really say I've seen less bloated phones in the market...
TWRP and root are completely fine on Stock
no idea about band 12
ZTE spyware... The only thing I heard about was the location provider on A2017G which is being changed on the next update. We had Qualcomm IZat (Korea) and we got changed to Tencent (China) so that's kind of a spyware. but you can uninstall that with root
and I understand people who say that the stock ROM is ugly. Just use a launcher.
the only real advantage that I can see is the possibility to use Substratum with a pitch black theme. I could get near to 2 days battery with that stuff.
^^How recently have you tried it?
I'll be out and about tomorrow so will get a chance to play with the camera to see how well it does in RR. I got both the google camera and aosp camera apps installed. We'll see how good/bad the pics come out. I don't expect dslr results out of a cell phone camera anyway so camera quality isn't at the top of the list for me.
Same with games. Can't remember the last one I played on a phone. Most of my use is email/web/navi/voip. Long battery life is at the top of my list. With typical usage, I could go 2 days between charges and still have ~40% remaining. If I get 3 days now with RR with similar usage/sot, I'll be happy camper. Not to mention, the phone is more responsive.
Stock isn't bad until you've tried something else, then you get a feel for how heavy the ui is.
Band 12 is supported on both tmo and att as far as i know. I know i've seen it a few times on att.
Does anyone have an alternative link to the files in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204
Dev-Host either throws out a ton of spam links or just stalls on the download.
Alright!
I'm on 7.1.1 with backed up stock bootloader and recovery. Rooted with a modified version of Magisk and passing the safetynet check.
So far, signal strength seems good and the addition of wifi calling is fantastic....
I don't have T-Mobile, but I believe the latest update, v. 7.1.1 B19 includes WiFi calling.
ETA: Oops. I guess that's what I get for getting distracted and posting a response an hour after I started it.

Best Upgrade for my Note 4

So I have an old Note 4, the SM-N910T. It's worked great for years, but after recent updates it just keeps getting worse and worse. It constantly errors out, telling me System UI is not responding. It loses GPS every time I try to use google maps for directions. And several times a week (if not a day) I'll get the x over my bars and can't even make phone calls with it.
I thought about just resetting it to see if that would help. But if I'm going to do that I thought I might as well try a whole upgrade to whatever the best is currently out there for it. I currently use Cricket as my carrier.
Any advice?
Ps. recently things like my Bank App (USAA) stopped working for my phone. The current version is no longer supported. Would the roms out there let me use it again?

Would grabbing the official APK file from an APK mirror make a diff? I am on Android Pie, Rusurrection Rom. It's amazing. There is a battery glitch tho that can be addressed while charging it to 100 percent in recovery. After that it appears to go away.
Why not go with a Pocophone F1 or the Redmi Note 7? Both of them are "flagship killers" and both of them are able to use the Gcam mod which greatly improves on the stock cam in every regard. Simply amazing to be honest.
I'm not that familiar with what my options are. I'd like to keep using the Note 4 that I have. I just don't know if there are packages out there that would work better then the default stuff that is one it now. It seems like the latest updates really made it run like crap.
I think I'm on Android 6 Marshmallow right now. Is there a way to get a newer Android version on my phone, perhaps one that runs better then what it came with?
why not root and flash the last rom marshmallow 6.0.1, and see if your problems go away.

I could do that I guess. I was just wondering what the best rom out there for my phone is? What do people recommend. I guess I was under the impression that there were more options now. The standard T-Mobile software that's on there now has just gotten worse and worse with each update.
I didn't know if there was a way to put a newer version of Android on an older phone like that. Or if I'm stuck with Marshmallow?
