Hi everyone.
I've recently found a new use for my 2012 wifi Nexus 7 as a secondary monitor on Windows. I have it standing below my main monitor running streams or videos while gaming or browsing. Right now I'm using spacedesk over wifi. It does work but often times isn't very smooth. Supposedly, running spacedesk via usb-tethering should improve performance and it wouldn't tax my shared apartment's wifi. I don't care about any other functions besides usb-tethering and the ability to run spacedesk.
I've tried teaching myself about modding but I just remained absolutely clueless. I can flash ROMs but that's about it. Even for ADB stuff i would need foolproof instructions.
I'm currently using AOSP 7.x (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...2-wifi-3g-f2fs-ext4-android-7-x-aosp.3467514/). It shows a usb-tethering option which has no effect on Windows or spacedesk. I've also tried a reverse tethering app on it which gave the Nexus 7 internet over usb but still no connection over spacedesk.
I've also tried cm 10.1 provided by skyline159 in https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...er-on-jelly-bean.1879660/page-3#post-36986587 without success. Wired tether 1.4 responded with an unsupported Kernel if I remember correctly.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...er-on-jelly-bean.1879660/page-3#post-47949482 sounds promising but I don't know about the root shell or whether his method works for windows aswell.
Any help would be appreciated.
On a side note:
I also tried doing it the other way around. Running youtube or twitch on the Nexus while sending the sound to my computer via AirAudio. That gave me an annoying 1.5 second delay that ruined the whole experience. It's also less convenient than PC->Nexus.
I also can't use the Nexus' audio port because it has an awful quality due to its age I suppose.

Hi xda users,
since the display of the Nexus 10 will be awesome I'm contemplating getting it because I'd really like to use it as a (second) screen for my computer. Does anyone know if this will be possible? Probably not without, but maybe *with* a mod? Can we use this Miracast Screen Share the other way round possibly?
It'd be really cool to play games on it as well, with the power of my desktop. I wouldn't be able to tell the pixels apart/ wouldn't see any pixelisation. Also this will get rid of the need for antialiasing which will boost performance
Woohoooo
There's an app for that
iDisplay or Splashtop 2
I personally haven't tried them out but they might be what your looking for.
Thanks! Well Splashtop2 is only over Wireless, so it's probably going to be to slow at least for gaming. iDevices with USB support looks better. Does anyone know how bad the latency is (with both)?
Anyway to make the tablet as a video monitor? i/e hdmi IN?
Splashtop2 is pretty good and there is hardly any delay so depending on what you are using it for it might be okay, but it doesn't give you an extra screen just mirrors an existing one. If you want an additional screen you could try airdisplay, haven't tried it for gaming but it might be okay.
Also I have played D3 using Splashtop and besides not being a very good game it worked fine.
OMG that's awesome sauce
OMG that's an awesome idea, the Nexus 10 has resolution comparable to my 30 inch monitor... crazy.
please post to tell us if it worked.
Yeah I'm very interested in this. I tried out Air Display and it worked well, but it had low framerates and some lag.
How can I use the Nexus 10 to replace the cracked screen on my Lenovo E420 laptop?
I will not always have access to a wireless network, so I need to find a solution that is either wired or bluetooth.
I assume a wired connection would be best, followed by bluetooth.
Thanks.

I don't think it's possible to do it wired, because the Nexus 10 has no input port for its display.
Bluetooth as far as I know does not have a protocoll for video transfer, so that's not possible either afaik.
However you might be able to connect them per WiFi Direct oder WiFi Ad-Hoc, meaning you don't need WiFi network on it's own because they connect directly or the Nexus 10 to the Ad-Hoc network, respectively. If your laptop supports WiFi Direct (you can look it up on the WiFi Alliance Website, every product is listed there) you might be able to use Miracast. But you need software for it on your laptop for windows or whatever you use. If you got Android 4.2 on it, then you don't need new software ;P (that's probably not easily achieved, but may be soon when there's an official x86 AndroidOSP Version).
If not, try DLNA. I don't know if Windows or Linux supports it, but I think support is achievable through software.
Good luck and report back if it works!
Do you know about proper app that would support gestures in Windows 8?
I only found ones that are working as simple touchpad - working with mouse.
No support for swipes from edges of the screen....
Any ideas???
Nothing?
Note 1, II and S33 looks like they would be perfect for Windows 8 and old PC (desktop) to help with gestures...

how would you propose to transmit the information?
TCP is notoriously crap for such things, Bluetooth is better but the last i heard (and i haven't checked recently so forgive me if im wrong) Android doesn't support the full BT profile set
ive tried various TCP solutions for similar problems and all have been very unsatisfactory. Touch is very fluid, TCP just isn't designed for that level of finesse
its a good idea, and one ive been trying to get with various devices over the years but relying on TCP isn't going to be good, proprietary is obviously too expensive to develop and deploy, leaving BT, which would be a interesting cross platform experiment from a device that doesn't (didn't?) support it
At this point even USB would be fine with me - I could charge device and use it as touch pad at the same time
Not to mention that form what I understand (from what you wrote) other ways of Android 2 PC connection are "no go".
It would be (screen of a smartphone that supports all W8 gestures) great add-on to all of us with W8 and "old" PC without touch screen.
I saw a logitech device (big touch pad - http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/touchpad-t650?crid=1153 ) if screen could work like this - awesome.
It would not even have to show any picture... just be touch sensitive...
Of course in this mode Android notification bar would have to be disabled...
If your only concern is the network connection, there are tons of options. UDP is the obvious one; I don't know why you thought of TCP first.. However, TCP with the Nagle algorithm disabled (NODELAY flag) would probably be fine. Hell, raw serial (which should be supported over Bluetooth just fine) would be sufficient.
If you seriously think of making such an app (AWESOME), please take under consideration that it has to be easy to setup for average public.
I have tried yesterday this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tnksoft.winmultitouchfree&feature=search_result
And I did not manage to get it to work and connect to Windows. Way to difficult and description of what to do, why, where to get info (numbers for the app/ addresses) non existent. No one (unless you are member of XDA ) will wan to spend time just to set it up.
Serial over BT would absolutely be fine, assuming you can hold a reliable connection but does android support that now though? UDP/TCP especially over wireless coms just isn't good if you want a fluid response, it does work and for basic tasks would be fine but if your looking for a true touch like interface its no good, from what I've seen anyway

I use splashtop on my tab to connect to my 47inch windows 8 computer running splashtop in my livingroom. All settings on splashtop like graphics and sound are off or at their minimum setting. Works excellent as a touchpad with full support for swiping in windows 8.

Got splashtop on s3 and iPad - will try it in the moment

Remember to set the extras like sharing clipboard and sound to off so they don't clog the communication channel between android and windows.

Thanks, I indeed forgot about it
So my YoCam camera arrived, and excited to receive my new kickstarter toy, I tried to connect it to my phone following the basic instructions.
Phone sees and connects to the device via wireless, but the app refuses to connect. However using other android phones will allow me to connect to the camera, using exactly the same process., so it does not appear at least at a basic level, an android or an app issue.
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, or can suggest some troubleshooting tools so i can get a better view of what is going on.
Thanks
Hi, Not that this helps: I have exactly the same but on a Samsung Note 3 running cyanogenmod 6.0.1. When connecting to my Samsung tab S2 with standard Android no problem.
Are you running a alternative rom on your phone or standard?

I am looking at buying the Axon 7 but after reading the review referenced below I'm uncertain about USB connectivity to any PC. I don't want to be constantly fiddling with driver installs etc just to do basic connectivity things like transferring photos, music, etc.
The review is here:

Here's what the review said:
Another annoyance is transferring files to a computer. Rather than plugging it in and it working, drivers need to be installed and even that failed in the first few attempts. It’s minor, but was something else to add to a list of irritations.

I use a mixture of linux and Windows OSs. Can anyone please tell me if the Axon 7 can be connected to a PC without the need for ZTE specific/custom drivers first being installed?
(sorry about the link to the review - this is my first post so I'm not allowed to post the full link).
I've had some issues when enabling debugging. If I needed debugging I would have to turn it on and off till it worked. For general connectivity for charging and data transfer I've had no issues. I haven't had to install any 3rd party drivers. I use my phone with OS X, Linux and Windows with no problems on any of these operating systems.
For normal operations, no 3rd party drivers are needed for the MTP protocol (which is why this protocol is used btw.)
Transferring files / media should be as simple as plugging in your phone and letting your computer figure the rest out automatically.
My phone works perfectly on my Windows machine and my Macbook (via Googles MTP program).
Thanks for the feedback. I bought the Axon 7 and love it. Great phone and no connectivity issues whatsoever.
Not sure yet if I should mod it. It's not pure android (like my nexus is) but it doesn't seem so bloated either.
Any suggested ROMs to try if I do mod it?

Bad Boyz is stock-based. They also have an AROMA installer so you can control what apps you want to debloat.
If you're a tweak freak like me though, you'll thoroughly enjoy ResurrectionRemix. Very stable, and great battery life. Flash AX7 Kernel and Viper4Android and you're good to go.

This is basically what I was about to say. I have no issues at home, at work (3 different PC's), or on my laptop and have never installed any 3rd party drivers. All Windows 10 machines, except one Windows 7 machine.

I'd wait for DrakenFX to release his ZAD Mix 7.1.1 ROM.... It should be any day now. It's a stock, de-bloated ROM so there are no audio issues. Any of the LOS or other custom ROMs, not based on stock, all have audio issues.
For a closer "Nexus" experience/look, I'd recommend a different launcher?? Like the Google Pixel launcher or Nova Prime (I've attached a pic of mine using Nova Prime). All my long-press shortcut actions work on Nova too (also attached).
I am rooted, so I've changed my font.
I am trying to turn my shield tablet into basically an android TV box. I am trying to get Prime, Netflix, and Cinema apk to play on tablet and cast to Roku box. I used to be able to do it no problem. I do not know what changed. I am running Triodexe 15.1 Lineage. I am trying to cast to my Roku Ultra. I know your devices have to be on the same wireless network which they are. If it isn't the tablet doing it the only thing I can think of that possibly changed is ROM and now my wireless network just has one network name for both 2.4 and 5. This new router just sets up one network and prioritizes devices automatically for which network the device will use. As far as ROM I cannot remember which one I had it working on. Is anyone else able to confirm casting is working on this app?
Update - When using Lineage I could not get my PS4 to connect via Bluetooth. This was in addition to not being able to use the cast button. I ended up finding a solution to the casting problem. I downloaded Cast to TV-Xcast from the Google play store once it was setup I was able to detect my wifi connection and get it setup. I decided to experiment trying get the PS4 controller working. I seen Magisk actually has a module to add support for the PS4. I installed it and it did not work. Therefore, I decided to try another custom ROM. I am now running ASOP 6.7 with Pie Android 9. I still have the cast problem on it but my controller now pairs. So, it took some monkeying around but I solved those issues.
It seams like we have a couple good ROMs for this device which are close to working perfectly and then the people building them stop. I know Lineage had official builds of 14.1 and 15.1. Somewhere there has to be on o hei builds floated around that is stable. Then, the proper patches can be applied to it. I have tried looking into building images myself but that is over my head. I have a PC I just built that is more than fast enough. I have a Ryzen 7 3600, 32gb of RAM, and more than enough SSD space. I wish someone could connect to my PC and remotely build images, or they could remotely help setup my PC and show me how to do it. Then, I would keep the forum updated with new builds. If I could figure it out I would help out building images for other devices as well.
