Coming from a Z3 compact, I can't help but feel this is a huge step back in terms of battery performance. I am really, really disappointed.
Woke up today at 7:00 with a full charge, watched about 40 minutes of YouTube which took me down to 68%; now it's 3:30 PM, the phone has barely seen any use and the battery is at 52%. On the Z3c when the battery was brand new, with this kind of use I would still be around 80%.
I really don't know what to say This is now a one-day-lasting phone like any other.

That's disappointing. I've got a Z3C that I use very lightly, mostly just 10 minutes of web browsing, 20 mins on WhatsApp and a bit more general screen on time. Maybe 45 to 60 mins total per day. I still get 3 days of battery life from my 3 and a half year old phone.
I'm considering either a XZ2C or Google Pixel (2016), but not really sold on either of them, both for being larger and the battery life being poorer
xz2c upgraded to 5" full hd screen, that's why battery life isn't as good as z3c. you can't have everything unfortunately.
still, I'm very happy with battery life of this phone, i get easily through 2 full days with one charge, and 6 hours sot, average usage.
it depends from your usage pattern of course, btw with same usage i used to get half the battery life with my previous S7.
not to mention size of this phone is perfect for me! very happy
ps. pixel 2016 is bigger than xz2c and battery lasts shorter.. and it is 2 years old phone.. wouldn't suggest it

Yeah, I know the Pixel is bigger and older, but I'm not too concerned with the performance difference and the both have 4GB of RAM, which is more important for me. also wonder if my light usage could stretch the Pixel out to 2 days too.
For the Z3C, community support for ROMs was OK, but I expect the Pixel will have a larger community and will continue to get updates for a longer time.
I think the sensible thing is for me to stick with the Z3C until it breaks, but we don't always make the sensible choice...
light use endurance is pretty good of this phone. if you just bought the phone, don't forget that the battery might need some time to adjust itself. and in my case it needed to drain the battery with some unknown usage after a system update.
My light use endurance is great. After 1 & 1/2 days being off the charger & 1 hr of SOT, I still had 70% left. Blows my Unlocked Galaxy S9+ (965U1) away in terms of both standby & in-use battery performance.
To be fair on the GS9+, however, that phone is connected to a Gear S3 Classic 24/7.

loving it, it's one week of use and i end everyday with battery at 50-60%
i use it for browsing, instant messagging, share and take photoes, waste time on 9gag and various networking configurations.
if you have battery drains check for installed applications. Disable facebook!
I still have over a day left, aiming for 3 days at the moment.

Ya... it's a pity that the market apparently wants Full HD also on small screens. To me, dpi>300 doesn't make sense apart from VR (which I never use), but the market wants 430dpi+ apparently. Yes, there is a tiny difference between my Mi5S (428dpi) and my previous Moto G 2014 (294dpi) in terms of sharpnes - but I'd always take the longer battery life instead.

Hi,
I recently bought this phone and it's awesome but I noticed that when I unplug the phone from the charger, it drains quickly battery even in stand by. Right now it has 18 min SOT and it's 89% (most whatsapp). Not quite like yours. Since I did just 2-3 cycles, do I need to calibrate it? If so, how should I do it exactly?
Thanks a lot!

I've received my Mate 20 pro in Twilight colour. Got it yesterday, but I'm holding off on it until the weekend to play with it. Here in Norway in does not come with the clear case unfortunatly, but I've ordered a few to come soon hopefully.
it's so quiet in here...mate 20 is under-rated
It's not underated but few people of xda would buy because of lock bl.. anyway expecting mine on friday..

Where did you get yours? Same situation here also from Norway. I find some on various websites but its only the 4GB model. Is yours too or did you get the 6GB one?
I got it a few days ago and I am seriously impressed overall, especially with the hardware.
Previously I had a HTC 10 which I loved dearly, but was betrayed by a fast degrading battery (see HTC 10 forum, 90% of threads are about it). It got to the point where i had to permanently dock the phone to a bank because it could no longer hold a charge.
This thing though, oh boy. The fact that I don't have to charge it for 2 days is enough of a reason for me to love it. I need to get used to how big phones are these days, I've already dropped it once trying to lock the phone with one hand starting with a grip on the upper half of the phone (I know, real awkward, had doritos grease on the other hand). I can barely toss a ball in pokemon go now because it's so weird moving my finger the extra distance. I've also had to scale down all the UI elements so my eyes can read everything more easily like my last phone.
It's a ton of fun though. I will be sure to look after this thing's health more than my HTC, with greenify and a native Android Oreo OS, I hope I don't have to change phones for a long time.
Best phone ever
Have been using it for 24 hrs now. Comming from a OnePlus 6 the battery is amazing and I love the camera! Great phone overall.
Yep, got one last weekend also (Midnight Blue) and coming from a 2 year old Galaxy S7 Edge I'm blown away by the battery life! I'm at 9h of SOT after 1 day and 19h off the charger and I'm still at 28% LOL! It's almost indecent, that's what it is! And this is just my first charge... I happily give up wireless charging for this kind of battery performance. The S7 Edge barely gets 4h of SOT and something like 30h before dying. And it's not just the battery capacity, it's also about the OS optimization which the Samsung messed up about 1 year ago.
Although still not a perfect device, it does some things so well (impressive battery, remarkable screen - I'm looking at it next to my S7 Edge and I can't believe it's an LCD!, tiny notch, superb - I'd say flawless - construction) that in my opinion brings it closer to 5 stars than to 4 stars

I agree, battery life is insane on this phone. I tracked my battery consumption for one month using AccuBattery. On average I had a 4% drop in battery life for every screen on hour. The corresponding number for OnePlus 6T was 7%. Everything on this phone is top notch except EMUI.

Yes, that's more or less what GSam Battery Monitor shows me, around 4-5% battery usage during screen on. At the same time I get around 4% battery drain per 48h due to wakelocks, mostly Play Store Services localisation (GPS always on).
Useful information about the 6T by the way. I almost got that one for the OS and the in-screen fingerprint scanner, but I couldn't get pass the much higher than average SAR value. I expected the Mate 20 to have better battery life than the 6T (even with its LCD screen), but I didn't expect it to be this good.

I actually think Mate 20 is superior OP6T in almost every way except the user interface. I bought a used OP6T since I was dissatisfied with EMUI on Mate 20. However, after using OP6T a couple of days I sold it and went back to Mate 20 for the following reasons.
- As already mentioned, the battery life is clearly better on Mate 20.
- Mate 20 is the prettier phone, smaller bezels and overall nicer looking compared to OP6T.
- Speed is more or less the same but I felt that Mate 20 was slightly faster when opening apps.
- The rear camera is slightly better on Mate 20. Probably due to the large 1.55um pixels on the main rear sensor on Mate 20. I also missed the ultra wide angle sensor on OP6T.
- I like the screen quality better on Mate 20. Blacks are deeper on OP6T due to AMOLED but bright backgrounds look better on Mate 20 and I also felt that the screen on Mate 20 was more crisp and vibrant.
- The screen size is clearly larger on Mate 20 due to 6,53 inch and 18:7 aspect ratio. The screen on OP6T is too narrow and do not feel that much larger than a regular 6 inch 18:9 screen.
The hardware design of Mate 20 with the UI of OP6T would more or less be the perfect smartphone.

I'm waiting for users feedbacks about its SOT. I think that it will beat some records...
I'm expecting this phone to thrive in this category. The screen isn't some crazy 4K resolution and combine that with the 5000 mAh battery and we should have great SOT.
I have a bad itch to get a new phone and am tempted to get the OnePlus 7 Pro but I hear the 90hz refresh rate and fancy new screen are killing SOT
Whoever is going to post SOT, do not forget to mention screen resolution used, "tweaks" and "measures" taken in settings etc. Also show full screenshots. Thanks.
7 nm SoC coupled with a mostrous battery, it is expected to deliver great, great battyerylife.
As long as its well optimized. Other phones with big batteries have been awful due to power wastage.

There is a good review on youtube user name "Geekyranjit" He talks about the cons but says SOT is average gettting 4.5-6, he felt dropping the panel down to 60hz did not boost it enough. His biggest con he felt is that it is just really big, not balanced real well and it is heavy at over 200g. The Asus is a little smaller at 6.4 vs 6.67. I am just dying to order a new phone and replace the G7 ThinQ I am using that I got dirt cheap because of a cracked back glass corner but I have it in a Spigen so who cares.
I feel I should wait to see the Asus release and price in US as it may be what i go for. My concern is Asus updates but it will have an active ROM community I imagine

I saw an other reviewer on youtube with 75% battery remaining and around 3 hours of screen-on-time.
I come from an LG G6, our phones are great (it's the phone I've kept for longer, at 1.5 years), but the battery, AY the battery... Can't wait to see the results of the ultraWide camera pics... If they look just as decent as LG's, if not better, I'll get it too...

I found the LG G6 was just horrible overall and its battery life was garbage. I now have a G7 ThinQ and I have to say I will not buy another LG phone again. Prior to the G7 I tried HTC U11, P10 Plus and Essential PH1, that is the phone I regret selling , it was excellent , even the camera w the google cam port was decent but the overall aspects of the phone were very good
I wish Asus would release in US sooner

Chigztech on YouTube posted 9hrs 12mins sot with 6% remaining. I don't know if it was wifi or mobile but the Nex S exceeds those numbers with 1,000mah less. My best so far, mostly on wifi, has been 9hrs 4mins with 14% remaining and a new update a few days ago looks like it can approach 11 hours sot.
Battery life is very good according to gsmarena review.
https://m.gsmarena.com/asus_zenfone_6-review-1937.php
Wow not a lot of good to be said for the display.
This is a bit of a let down and is now making me re-consider this as a purchase, I watch a lot of YouTube so a decent display is kinda required.
Ah well...
SOT is about 11h which is insane for me. my phone now averaging 4.30 hours - 5 hours.
Asus says the screen is IPS with 600 nits and 100% DCI-P3 which should be plenty bright and color corrected. GSMarena for sure loves AMOLED but for my usage it looks like good enough.

That Pixel 3a time was a surprise. Goes to show those who don't need a top-end chipset may be better saving the cash and enjoying the efficiency of mid-tier chips like the SD 6xx. Zenfone 6 does look fantastic for battery time, but not getting quite the 20% extra time from the 20% bigger battery, even against the 90hz OnePlus 7 Pro. Hope some software adjustments can be made to further improve it, because it's great, but not as good as expected when compared to others.

It lasts 30% longer than the 7 pro. And 20% more than the regular 7. Seems pretty good to me for an lcd display against oleds in a test that includes a bunch of video playback.

Indeed. GSMarena confirmed that in the browsing test and or in the talktime test, the ZenFone outlasted the others by a huge margin.
But how did you get 30% more? It was almost exactly 20% more than the 7 pro.
As a quick info: during setup of the phone, I lost around 25% over 10 hours with around 4 hours SOT. let's see how this settles during normal usage.
Edit: after day 1 and my regular usage pattern, I lost about 20%. This is about on par with the Lenovo P2. I will still have to see if a longer screen usage drains more (I suspect this due to the LCD instead of the AMOLED). Will report this later...

Very timely thread. I've been wondering about battery. This is my first device (out of 6) that I even paid attention to battery drain.
Overnight unplugged not a problem. During the day, with admittedly heavy usage, the drain seems a lot more than what I'm used to with previous devices. I've run Better Battery Stats for several days and there is no specific app nor process that I can identify as the culprit.
I'll be watching this thread to see what develops.
My Rating Out of 10: 6
Coming from a Tab S3 I'm getting much better battery life. I use to have to charge the S3 at least once during the day and sometimes again in the evening. The S6 is making it all day on a single charge.
I've just come from a Pixel C and the battery life is very impressive, yes I know the Pixel C is from 2015 so the battery life has degraded somewhat but still, it's a lot better.

Don't care, the iPad could be 1% an hour and I still wouldn't be interested.
Personally I'm finding the battery on my LTE model to be very good - I used it on Sunday to watch sports pretty much non-stop for about 7-8 hours and still had 45% of battery life left - impressed me considering that was 7-8 hours running off LTE/4G.
I'm getting over 8 hours screen on time between charges which is excellent considering the size of the battery. I don't leave it on overnight though as I really don't see the point.
My old PIxel C with a larger (degraded) battery was only getting around 4-5 hours before I sold it, Tegra X1 was never the most effiecent SoC though.

Performance wise I have no complaints, most apps run great but compatibility is an issue, the Pixel C might actually be more compatible which is highly strange. The tab 6 is new but SD855 is not.
Battery life is much better of course, the device itself is much thinner, smaller bezels, much better audio quality, the speakers on the Pixel C were awful.
I'm satisfied but I will be getting a replacement, uneven black levels, general issue with oled displays sadly.

Thanks for the information I appreciate it! Hopefully, you have better oled panel lottery this time around. I'll probably end up picking one up with the keyboard attachment.
I loved my X3 Pro but I am with EE and under the contract I found I could upgrade to the X5 Pro for zero cost, and in fact my monthly payment would go DOWN by £4. So it seemed like a no brainer.
Overall I am loving the X5 just like the X3. For me though, it's barely any different. Marginally better in some ways, worse in others.
Something that does disappoint, and which surprised me greatly, is that the screen not as bright as on the X3 Pro. for any given brightness level.
It's not just about the Auto brightness level (which is much darker) sadly. In fact the screen is just plain darker. I maxed out the brightness on both phones and measured to output with my i1 Display Pro colorimeter, and it confirmed what my eyes tell me, it's about 5% to 10% darker at maximum brightness.
Whether this is down to the screen itself or a design choice by Oppo to improve battery life, who knows. But it's disappointing.
And on the subject of battery life, something remarkable about the X5 is the overnight battery drain. The other night, I went to bed with my new phone charged to 100%. I woke in the morning and was interested to see how much battery it had used overnight. To my astonishment, it was still on 100%, and that's after sleeping for 7 hours!
Really no idea how it manages that but I did think it was amazing.
