Very timely thread. I've been wondering about battery. This is my first device (out of 6) that I even paid attention to battery drain.
Overnight unplugged not a problem. During the day, with admittedly heavy usage, the drain seems a lot more than what I'm used to with previous devices. I've run Better Battery Stats for several days and there is no specific app nor process that I can identify as the culprit.
I'll be watching this thread to see what develops.
My Rating Out of 10: 6
Coming from a Tab S3 I'm getting much better battery life. I use to have to charge the S3 at least once during the day and sometimes again in the evening. The S6 is making it all day on a single charge.
I've just come from a Pixel C and the battery life is very impressive, yes I know the Pixel C is from 2015 so the battery life has degraded somewhat but still, it's a lot better.

Don't care, the iPad could be 1% an hour and I still wouldn't be interested.
Personally I'm finding the battery on my LTE model to be very good - I used it on Sunday to watch sports pretty much non-stop for about 7-8 hours and still had 45% of battery life left - impressed me considering that was 7-8 hours running off LTE/4G.
I'm getting over 8 hours screen on time between charges which is excellent considering the size of the battery. I don't leave it on overnight though as I really don't see the point.
My old PIxel C with a larger (degraded) battery was only getting around 4-5 hours before I sold it, Tegra X1 was never the most effiecent SoC though.

I'm still on the Pixel C running 10.0 but was thinking about making the jump since the CPU is really starting to show it's age but GPU performance is still excellent. How satisfied are you with the switch?

Performance wise I have no complaints, most apps run great but compatibility is an issue, the Pixel C might actually be more compatible which is highly strange. The tab 6 is new but SD855 is not.
Battery life is much better of course, the device itself is much thinner, smaller bezels, much better audio quality, the speakers on the Pixel C were awful.
I'm satisfied but I will be getting a replacement, uneven black levels, general issue with oled displays sadly.

Who the hell plays candy crush, and for gawd sakes why for 22 hours?

i've never touched Candy Crush but I tend to play with a new phone a lot. Not that impressed with battery. I'm re-adjusting to how much worse android is on standby overnight, but it sips pretty hard in general. A new phone is about my heaviest usage though, I'm not considering that any kind of real review.
Extremely impressed with the battery. I am coming from a Note 4 and the battery is much better on the 8. I was concerned that the battery was going to be a weak spot and now I think it is one of the strengths of the Note 8.
Battery life is the best I've ever experienced on a smartphone in my life
I agree that I am getting amazing battery results also. Coming from the note 4 I am concerned about the life of the battery with the possibility of me having to charge it during the day and night since I use it for work. It is not. Replaceable like the note 4 and if it only has 500 charge cycles that would not last me a year...

Yea on further use I find it mediocre. Certainly compared to the iPhone I was using. I don't feel sore about it because the phone is doing so much and charges fast, it should have a larger battery. Wireless at home, car charger, charger at work. I'll survive.

Really holds up well for being ran wide open. No gaming so I can't tell how long it would last under the most intense use, but I don't turn my phones down or conserve and it gets used a lot. Outlasts my iPhone 7 plus by hours.
6 months later and I am still pushing 8-10 hours SoT running in high performance mode only.
right now I'm on 68% with 3.44 on battery, 3.01 SoT but have also been streaming music for over 2 hours

Thats seems not possible on a Note 8. I had a note 8 had nothing installed besides the basics. Mostly used for browsing and YouTube. The battery life was shocking so i returned the device. Instead i bought a Pixel 2 XL and couldn't be happier. Battery life on the Pixel 2 XL is much better than any samsung phone i have had. Out of all samsung phones I have had the S7 Edge had the best battery life and that even gets about 2 hrs less SOT compared to my Pixel 2 XL
Considering a note device is aimed at heavy end users battery life would be the first thing you would want to get right. However this is not the case which is disappointing. I won't buy another samsung device untill they fit 4000mah batteries as samsungs are not efficient at all

Agreed.
I have been using my note 8 exynos 128 GB for 4 months, and It runs more or less as expected, 5-6 hours SOT, I use it in entertaining mode, If you pay a high price for a high end device, it would be pointless to use it under restrains, lower resolution, lower brightness etc, all those things that make this phone a beast, but all these nice features are power hungry

Coming from a Z3 compact, I can't help but feel this is a huge step back in terms of battery performance. I am really, really disappointed.
Woke up today at 7:00 with a full charge, watched about 40 minutes of YouTube which took me down to 68%; now it's 3:30 PM, the phone has barely seen any use and the battery is at 52%. On the Z3c when the battery was brand new, with this kind of use I would still be around 80%.
I really don't know what to say This is now a one-day-lasting phone like any other.

That's disappointing. I've got a Z3C that I use very lightly, mostly just 10 minutes of web browsing, 20 mins on WhatsApp and a bit more general screen on time. Maybe 45 to 60 mins total per day. I still get 3 days of battery life from my 3 and a half year old phone.
I'm considering either a XZ2C or Google Pixel (2016), but not really sold on either of them, both for being larger and the battery life being poorer
xz2c upgraded to 5" full hd screen, that's why battery life isn't as good as z3c. you can't have everything unfortunately.
still, I'm very happy with battery life of this phone, i get easily through 2 full days with one charge, and 6 hours sot, average usage.
it depends from your usage pattern of course, btw with same usage i used to get half the battery life with my previous S7.
not to mention size of this phone is perfect for me! very happy
ps. pixel 2016 is bigger than xz2c and battery lasts shorter.. and it is 2 years old phone.. wouldn't suggest it

Yeah, I know the Pixel is bigger and older, but I'm not too concerned with the performance difference and the both have 4GB of RAM, which is more important for me. also wonder if my light usage could stretch the Pixel out to 2 days too.
For the Z3C, community support for ROMs was OK, but I expect the Pixel will have a larger community and will continue to get updates for a longer time.
I think the sensible thing is for me to stick with the Z3C until it breaks, but we don't always make the sensible choice...
light use endurance is pretty good of this phone. if you just bought the phone, don't forget that the battery might need some time to adjust itself. and in my case it needed to drain the battery with some unknown usage after a system update.
My light use endurance is great. After 1 & 1/2 days being off the charger & 1 hr of SOT, I still had 70% left. Blows my Unlocked Galaxy S9+ (965U1) away in terms of both standby & in-use battery performance.
To be fair on the GS9+, however, that phone is connected to a Gear S3 Classic 24/7.

Ya... it's a pity that the market apparently wants Full HD also on small screens. To me, dpi>300 doesn't make sense apart from VR (which I never use), but the market wants 430dpi+ apparently. Yes, there is a tiny difference between my Mi5S (428dpi) and my previous Moto G 2014 (294dpi) in terms of sharpnes - but I'd always take the longer battery life instead.

Hi,
I recently bought this phone and it's awesome but I noticed that when I unplug the phone from the charger, it drains quickly battery even in stand by. Right now it has 18 min SOT and it's 89% (most whatsapp). Not quite like yours. Since I did just 2-3 cycles, do I need to calibrate it? If so, how should I do it exactly?
Thanks a lot!

I have been with google phones for the last 5 years.
With the pixel line, I have never been so happy with my battery, specially pixel 2 xl. Battery would last 1.5 to 2 days...
However, with the 3, at the end of the day I had 39%, on a day I did not use the phone except for 10 sms, quick stocks check, 2 emails, no phone calls, 15 minutes of music with bt headphones in the metro.
Last night, I put it in safe mode, charged it. Took away from the charger at 6am, checked emails. At 8am, I had 90%.
Removed from safe mode at 8. Checked some messages, spoke for 10 minutes over the phone, checked emails and stocks. It is now 9:20am and my battery is at 80%
Not good. I am really disappointed.
If you have yours, please let me know how you feel about it.
I did see one youtuber complaining about his battery, I am afraid mine is defective. If not, I want to go back to the pixel 2 xl.
The battery is supposed to be adaptive, so it learns your usage. Most have said it needs a few days/a week before you get the full optimised life for it
Pixel 3 XL Battery Size: 3450 mAh
Pixel 2 XL Battery Size: 3,520 mAh
The Pixel 3 XL Battery is smaller no way around it
I have the XL and I charged it on the first day and let it drain to 1%. It lasted 27 hours and 5 hours and 40 minutes of screen time. I'll take it.
Battery life has been overall excellent. I havent been watching it like a hawk but it lasts all day with heavy usage. A- overall

There is really a misunderstanding about Adaptive Battery mode. All it really does is make sure that poorly written apps can't drain battery in the background if you rarely use them. If you don't have any apps like that Adaptive Battery doesn't really do anything. In my case I have no apps like that so Adaptive Battery on my Pixel 2 XL has made no difference.

I'm curious what kind of use got you that kind of battery life.
If you were using mobile data, had the screen really bright, played games, used navigation, etc that's pretty good.
If you were on wifi most of the time, lower screen brightness and doing non battery intensive tasks that's pretty disappointing.
I would say half and half wifi and mobile data. Screen was at 75%. Lots of web surfing, Netflix and YouTube. 45 minutes of navigation. Light email, texts, calls and photos. No games

I agree with you on that, but...
4 hours and 30 minutes off the charger, 6 days of using the phone:
2 XL: 96%
3 XL: 73%
The percentage here is MUCH larger than the battery size...
I am so disappointed and waiting for my replacement phone. If this continues... welcome 2 XL again...
what %/h (percent per hour) screen on?
i have 11%/h and 2.1%/h for screen on and off, combined 2.9%/h. over night it went from 23 to 17 i think. i charged to 80% this morning and at 39% from 9A to 10P.
The top of the screenshot is the battery life I'm getting at that moment, and the bottom is the average. This is mainly on wifi, with screen about 75% bright, using a VPN(idk if that drains it but seems like it). Anyway, I'm really happy with the battry life of this phone.

What you said was that it only helps with poorly written apps. That is totally, completely wrong- and I don't believe you bothered to read the article- you would know that.
https://venturebeat.com/2018/08/28/how-android-pies-adaptive-battery-and-adaptive-brightness-work/
See the section labeled "Adaptive Battery: 5 percent reduction in overall CPU". There is a noticable difference with the battery management on the Pixel 2 &3. It takes 2-3 weeks from my experience & it DOES in fact learn and adjust to a users usage. That's why they are calling it AI. You can't just look at one of those battery apps and judge the phone over a 24 hour period, nothing quantitative there. Use the phone as you normally would for a period of time and then and ONLY then can you fairly judge it.
This ties into Google's position on the camera as well, "bigger/more" isn't ALWAYS better. Machine learning can do a lot, and you need look no further than the performance of the camera to see that.
That being said- could the battery be bigger? Sure. It's actually 100ma less than the 2XL this year. But why? If you can get the same performance with "less"- it would be pointless to spend more money on "bigger."

Noticable battery improvement on the Pixel 2 XL? If you had poorly behaving apps then yes. I don't have any apps that hog battery in the background when they shouldn't. My battery life on my Pixel 2 XL running Pie is no different than it was on Oreo. I actually had a huge battery life decrease after I updated to Pie but a factory reset got me back to Oreo battery life.
And a 5% reduction of CPU means nothing. That's so tiny it isn't noticable. It's not the CPU or software that has the biggest impact on battery life. It's the screen and the size of the battery. Software optimizations help a little bit but not enough to even be worth mentioning.
The Pixel 3 XL doesn't get the same battery as the Pixel 2 XL. Not even close. I can do anything with my Pixel 2 XL other than GPS navigation and games and get 7-7.5 hours screen on time over 24 hours off the charger. That's down from 9 hours screen on time over 40 hours when it was new. The Pixel 3 XL isn't getting close to that. A combination of a bigger screen, higher resolution and smaller battery is the reason.
I don't know why people keep making a thing about the XL 3 battery being smaller than the XL 2 battery as though there has been some major downgrade, It is 2% smaller.
That isn't going to make any significant or noticeable difference. If you take a 6 hour SOT that would make 7 minutes difference! If there is a significant difference in the battery life of the XL 3 v XL 2 then it is nothing to do with the difference in battery size.
I too would have preferred a significantly bigger battery but most phone manufacturers continue to ignore this. I know some phones do have larger batteries, like any phone choice, you balance all the features offered and make your choice.
I'm getting 2.5% drain per hour regardless of whether the ambient display is on or not. It also doesn't change if I turn adaptive battery on or off.
I don't get it..

Yeah, this is one decision that Google made that I truly don't understand. Why would you downgrade the battery when you're adding more horsepower to the device?! I can maybe see doing this for the Pixel 3 but absolutely not for the Pixel 3 XL! My only complaint is the battery life, that being said, I know it's supposed to be adaptive, so it may improve over time. I'm hoping that proves to be the case!
UPDATE: I tend to agree with the point another person made that it's a 7% difference, though, I for sure would have preferred it was a 7% gain vs. a loss.

The problem all comes down to wireless charging: the wireless charging coil steals a couple mm of space....that's the only reason why the battery is smaller.
What I don't really get instead is why everyone is so freaking happy about wireless charging...I mean, for a marginal gain in charging behavior, we loose in battery capacity!
The pixel 3 xl drains much faster than the pixel 2 xl. It might be the new screen from Samsung consumes more energy but I'm not entirely sure.

First of all, GSM Arena's unit was faulty and didn't do well in their test. Battery life on this phone is superb even though it has "only" a 3000 mah battery. I got 5 hours and still 15 percent left. I have to go to bed now so I'm gonna put it on charge but it lasted me all day and more.
I'm using a Huawei Watch 2 connected all day through Bluetooth (that drains a lot), 2 SIM cards, WhatsApp and WhatsApp business and loads of social networking.
Motorola does some really high quality batteries. It's probably better than other phones with 3500 - 4000 mAh.
I'm also satisfied with the SOT.
I was also positive surprised about battery life, I get between 5 and 6 h sot, much better than my LG G6 who has a bigger battery on paper but only gets around 5 h sot in real life.
Can anybody confirm that battery is long lasting for people who don't have screen turned on all the time? I'm giving screenshots for my good old g5s plus.

I am Not very Happy with my screen on time, but it is ok.
The Phone is awesome,i Like it very much.
Another example: this time a little better at almost 7 hrs SOT at 15%.
And another for over 8 hrs at 15%.
Do you guys use your phones? You seem good candidates for flip phones. Just teasing.
Glad to see the Plus is doing so well. I opted for the dual sim Power. I'm gettin 12-14 hours screen time and have no problems breaking 40 hours. I backpack a lot and wanted the longer battery life for mapping and music while out in the back country for a few days. I have to say I am impressed. the 720 display on the Power is pretty nice for a 720 but it does have a flipping big notch.
I'm getting over 5 and a half hours of SOT. :good: (Right after a factory reset)
What's up?
I'm getting this:
I was using mostly Chrome and about 20 minutes playing Asphalt 8 and using camera for about 3 minutes. Brightness is at about 50% usually.
If I have brightness on 100% (outdoor in sunny days) I'm getting about an hour less SoT during the same time frame (22 hours).

I'm waiting for users feedbacks about its SOT. I think that it will beat some records...
I'm expecting this phone to thrive in this category. The screen isn't some crazy 4K resolution and combine that with the 5000 mAh battery and we should have great SOT.
I have a bad itch to get a new phone and am tempted to get the OnePlus 7 Pro but I hear the 90hz refresh rate and fancy new screen are killing SOT
Whoever is going to post SOT, do not forget to mention screen resolution used, "tweaks" and "measures" taken in settings etc. Also show full screenshots. Thanks.
7 nm SoC coupled with a mostrous battery, it is expected to deliver great, great battyerylife.
As long as its well optimized. Other phones with big batteries have been awful due to power wastage.

There is a good review on youtube user name "Geekyranjit" He talks about the cons but says SOT is average gettting 4.5-6, he felt dropping the panel down to 60hz did not boost it enough. His biggest con he felt is that it is just really big, not balanced real well and it is heavy at over 200g. The Asus is a little smaller at 6.4 vs 6.67. I am just dying to order a new phone and replace the G7 ThinQ I am using that I got dirt cheap because of a cracked back glass corner but I have it in a Spigen so who cares.
I feel I should wait to see the Asus release and price in US as it may be what i go for. My concern is Asus updates but it will have an active ROM community I imagine

I saw an other reviewer on youtube with 75% battery remaining and around 3 hours of screen-on-time.
I come from an LG G6, our phones are great (it's the phone I've kept for longer, at 1.5 years), but the battery, AY the battery... Can't wait to see the results of the ultraWide camera pics... If they look just as decent as LG's, if not better, I'll get it too...

I found the LG G6 was just horrible overall and its battery life was garbage. I now have a G7 ThinQ and I have to say I will not buy another LG phone again. Prior to the G7 I tried HTC U11, P10 Plus and Essential PH1, that is the phone I regret selling , it was excellent , even the camera w the google cam port was decent but the overall aspects of the phone were very good
I wish Asus would release in US sooner

Whoever is going to post SOT, do not forget to mention screen resolution used, "tweaks" and "measures" taken in settings etc. Also show full screenshots. Thanks.
7 nm SoC coupled with a mostrous battery, it is expected to deliver great, great battyerylife.

Chigztech on YouTube posted 9hrs 12mins sot with 6% remaining. I don't know if it was wifi or mobile but the Nex S exceeds those numbers with 1,000mah less. My best so far, mostly on wifi, has been 9hrs 4mins with 14% remaining and a new update a few days ago looks like it can approach 11 hours sot.
Battery life is very good according to gsmarena review.

Wow not a lot of good to be said for the display.
This is a bit of a let down and is now making me re-consider this as a purchase, I watch a lot of YouTube so a decent display is kinda required.
Ah well...
SOT is about 11h which is insane for me. my phone now averaging 4.30 hours - 5 hours.
Asus says the screen is IPS with 600 nits and 100% DCI-P3 which should be plenty bright and color corrected. GSMarena for sure loves AMOLED but for my usage it looks like good enough.
Not sure if this has already been posted.

That Pixel 3a time was a surprise. Goes to show those who don't need a top-end chipset may be better saving the cash and enjoying the efficiency of mid-tier chips like the SD 6xx. Zenfone 6 does look fantastic for battery time, but not getting quite the 20% extra time from the 20% bigger battery, even against the 90hz OnePlus 7 Pro. Hope some software adjustments can be made to further improve it, because it's great, but not as good as expected when compared to others.

It lasts 30% longer than the 7 pro. And 20% more than the regular 7. Seems pretty good to me for an lcd display against oleds in a test that includes a bunch of video playback.

Indeed. GSMarena confirmed that in the browsing test and or in the talktime test, the ZenFone outlasted the others by a huge margin.
But how did you get 30% more? It was almost exactly 20% more than the 7 pro.
As a quick info: during setup of the phone, I lost around 25% over 10 hours with around 4 hours SOT. let's see how this settles during normal usage.
Edit: after day 1 and my regular usage pattern, I lost about 20%. This is about on par with the Lenovo P2. I will still have to see if a longer screen usage drains more (I suspect this due to the LCD instead of the AMOLED). Will report this later...
