Samsung Galaxy 4 SM-T237 - similar to anything? - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm testing and getting a couple donated tablets ready for a group, and one came in that was a SM-T237 (which is pre-KRACK-patches ). So far I have tracked down that it is an Exynos 3470 powered system, different from the Marvell SM-T230, and the Qualcomm Matisse, but I can't find even a code name for this particular device, and I want more information before I try to flash "TWRP for Galaxy Tab 4 Degas" or anything else that may or may not break it. Is it similar to any other tablet for a starting point at least?

Looks like nothing simple anyway. Thinking I'll probably slap a "be careful... vulnerabilities" sticker on this one and send it back with Lollipop, and focus my attention on the probably equally difficult ZenPads, but they have 3GB RAM and I have two of them to spread the justification for the effort over.

I guess by "some people" you meant yourself
The Preview SDK includes:
An early Android 3.0 system image for use in the Android emulator <------- *********
An Android 3.0 library with non-final APIs
A new WXGA emulator skin for an extra large Android Virtual Device
New documentation for Android 3.0, including a complete API reference, new developer guides, and an API differences report between Android 3.0 and 2.3.
From here : http://developer.android.com/sdk/preview/index.html

Yeap, there is a system image and I already pulled some apps ^^
Edit: The AVD is extremely slow... meeeh..
could someone at least get the browser working on the tab http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930352
Source still needs to drop!
Same case with gingerbread. It was **** but ran. Once source dropped the magic began.
The launcher won't run with anything but the standard Xoom resolution

SIR!!
YES SIR!!
How about a please? Or wait until there's at least some semi-useful AOSP source available, the SDK build is not complete enough to be very useful. If you need to have a play with it, try using the VM in the SDK install.
From the 3.0 Platform highlights taken 'Android 3.0 is the first version of the platform designed to run on either single or multicore processor architectures.'
So I guess no need to leave the Tab behind !!! So I hope samsung will go ahead and deliver us this update!
Just one small story about Samsung, Tab, and Honeycomb...
About Samsung:
I hope that Samsung will port it for me so. Usually this is not normal in the real world, but Samsung will drop 2.3 for Galaxy S what is nowadays and old device, Galaxy Tab is newer and almost the first real, high quality Android tablet. This is clearly a tablet, what Honeycomb made for. The most sold Android phone is the Galaxy S and the most sold Android tablet the Galaxy Tab (with the totally agreements of problems about Samsung made this device before Google made the correct platform for it...), so nowadays the Samsung brand itself is very very strong and not just about the last years productions but these 2 products (real!)! So I think Samsung could make a 'small suicide' step if they forgot this device and forgot their users. They promised nothing, but could be a very negative echo about Samsung if they leave this device in the past, without any development.
About Honeycomb:
That is really not need hardcore hardware. The only real hw requirement is the strong video performance, but this is almost just for the new stock homescreen application. The lot full OpenGL handled screens and effects really need strong graphic performance, but Galaxy Tab in this case is not weak! For such situations the GFX performane is enought I think. The dual core CPU is just one very good addon, to make faster everything and make the device as one real device from the future, but for normal works the current hardware is enought. If Samsung dont want to overload the Tab then just need to leave out the new 'home'. For tabbed browsing the current RAM capacity is need to be enought. The device will not as fast as Xoom, but who care? Just leave out the needless plus features and give to the user the Honeycomb base with new browser, new gmail client, new settings, etc, etc... these are not power hungry things. One brand new device will better that Tab, but anyway we could use almost enything, and Samsung could make their brand more strong with hype and satisfied users of Tab as they do with Galaxy S.
Conclusions:
New Samsung devices? no problem, they will better, people will buy them, cause the new OLED screen, some new features, faster and harder hardware... but Tab could use Honeycomb as from this aspect it need nothing extra, and as a real tablet it need the OS what handle it in such way without any over glitches.
I hope Samsung will make a right decision, because there is no any real problem (nor technical nor business like) behind it!

And please Samsung! Read my previous post!!!

You are completely true about this Samsung will push out the Tab2 in 16 days at the MWC2011 press event. If the tab is going to get the 3.0 its going to be the last update for the device. Also the Galaxy S is going to get its killing blow in 16days since the Galaxy S 2 is also comming out there.
Yes as you wrote, Samsung will drop the 2 new device to make new strong apperiance in the global market with the new devices, developments, etc... new user will buy them of course, some old user will sell the old products, and buy a new one but far from all. 2.3 for SGS will the latest as your wrote, and I hope that 3.0 will also the latest for SGT, its not bad, this is the only needed. With it Samsung will get strong user satisfactions, old users could boost the global brand loyality. I dont want Android 7.0 on these devices... theses versions is more then enought for this products, and this not sign that I will never buy a new Android device... more over... I will buy just not now (if Samsung leave me alone, I will never buy Samsung 'mobile' again, and this is true for lot of people), and if Samsung will go on this way I will buy one Samsung again... 6 month ago I hate Samsung with their software developments for SGS, now, currently, I like them, because they have enought power on software development to make themself one of the best. There are problems? where not? If Samsung could reach user satisfactions, with the current sw, hw developments they could be the largest company in this busines. The target is it, I think.
Just drop the new devices what will shine, if I were in situatuions to buy a new device, without hesitate I could buy them. There are lot of people in the word who just wait to these products... and there are some others as me, who bought the first device to simply satisfy, and we were those user who make stronger the reputation of Samsung. Is it problem to make me available Honeycomb? Don't thing so. But of course Samsung could use a wrong receipt, hope that will not!
YES I can taste the honeycomb anytime soon...

Thinking about getting TPT. Few basic questions.

Hey all,
I'm sick of waiting around for the Samsung Note 10.1" and I really want a device with great stylus support. I have owned ThinkPads in the past (when they were IBM) and from the reviews it seems like most peoples problems with this device were software, not hardware related. I've owned 3 other android devices, always rooted and loaded custom ROMs on them but I am seeing a lot less development activity and choice here. So some questions:
1) I will probably order from Amazon, 32GB w/ stylus. Not sure if it will come with ICS aka 4.0.3 aka OTA3 (I think?). If it does there is currently no way to root it correct?
2) I see there are a few rooting methods, packages, apps, etc. I am getting really confused about which ones are for which device & image (K1, TPT, ROW, JP, etc). Is there a "go to" guide for this specific device?
3) Are there any AOSP ROMs available? If not, how much junk/bloat comes with Lenovo's images?
4) I am looking to use this for business, mostly note taking and diagramming. The stylus input is the *biggest* factor for me and I want it to be smoooooooth. Am I making the right purchase?
I have experience rooting and loading custom roms via CWR on the Nexus One and SGS2-Tmo. I'm just trying to do my homework and see if this device is going to meet my needs before dropping a few hundred on it.
Thanks
I think from what you've read on the forum YOU know you are making the wrong purchase but you're sick of waiting. Then Of course by all means pls get a tpt. That impatience of yours will be tested when you have to send the tablet for a few weeks to repair the broken usb/power button/volume button. The pen is NOT smooth-it develops a mind of its own after writing for a few mins. I'm also sorry to say that development on this tablet is DEAD. There were gallant efforts by koshu and Co but lenovo has proved that they are against development of any kind. Even updates from lenovo are a pain in the backside especially if u somehow had root or Cwm recovery. It's very difficult to learn from other people's mistakes until you make yours then you'd wish you been patient and saved a few hundred dollars

1) Correct, as of now.
2) Not applicable for a device you purchase that has ICS already loaded - which it will.
3) See 2 above.
4) You really have no option to the TPT if you're looking for a primarily business-oriented tablet, or one with an active digitizer pen. There aren't really any other tablets around that are designed to be anything other than entertainment toys.

I guess I was basing my impressions of the pen from this video: http://youtu.be/prqFXRFHbPE It looks like it has some quirks but for the most part these are software issues. I know I am running a risk buying something that is already out-dated, but I feel like the device still has potential with the right software and a price tag under $400.
I appreciate both of your replies but I guess I am no closer to figuring this out and should put off my purchase for another few months to see what else is in the pipeline. I wish there was more video and coverage of the stylus input on the new windows tablets.
I have been waiting *years* for the right tablet with pen input to come along. I do not understand how people deny that a market exists for these devices. I'm not even in school anymore (been hoping for this type of device since my first year of university) but if I was, as a science major the ability to draw and sketch ideas and diagrams, not to mention annotate PDFs/reading material, and have digital copies of my textbooks... it just all seems so obvious. As a web developer I am still constantly sketching out ideas and concepts and *cannot* take notes with a keyboard. I am a visual and tactile learner and the subtle underlines and annotations of my notes make all the difference.
Ok sorry for venting. Thanks for the replies.

Welcome to the TPT forums!
First of all, this tablet has a very low dev support hence you might have to wait for a long time to be able to root your device and load custom roms. As for now, there is a user who has compiled AOSP jelly bean on his TPT which is partially working. So my point is that things are happening in the dev center but at a very slow pace.
If you are buying this tablet to make diagrams and sketches then I would highly recommend it. The plus points of the TPT is that the hardware is really solid. I unfortunately dropped it a couple of times (well my friends dropped it) from a considerable height and there are no scratches or dents and the tablet works just great hence its pretty well built. Having a full sized USB is a great deal maker for me, being a university student, helps me rally data to old systems real quick.
As far as pen capabilities are concerned, there are quite a few apps that will make great use of it. Like the apps named quill, lecture notes etc will definitely be great for the device. I personally take notes on quill and i must say that the tablet lives upto my expectations. I have virtually replaced pen and paper with it. After the ICS update, the device is pretty snappy and the general UI experience has improved great folds from the honeycomb times.
I never rooted my tablet and never felt the need of doing so, cause like I said, after the ICS update the device is much faster thanks to custom launchers and disabling certain vendor apps. The main reason why i bought this tablet was to take notes and it has surpassed my expectations.
So if sketching is the main use instead of multimedia experience, then go for it. It is a practical device.
Hope that helped, let me know if i can assist you any further.
Cheers
Vito
Hey there, just a quick summary of what the different versions mean:
US,ROW,WE etc is the region of the device.
TPT is the thinkpad tablet
K1 is an entirely different Lenovo tablet, with no pen support. As far as I can tell, the two are not compatible (ROMs etc.) I'm pretty sure that K1 activity is routed here because there is no dedicated forum for it.
I hope to write a guide for the device shortly. There is not much development going on but that does not mean it is dead. Devs are working on various (very alpha) ports of CM9 and AOSP JB, and the official lenovo update is apparently very nice (including making the pen even better to use )
In terms of bloat, lenovo does add quite a few annoying apps, but luckily most can be uninstalled without root.
I bought a 32GB ROW (because I'm in canada). I have been using NVflash and am able to flash roms without the use of CWM, which could turn out to be our salvation. It looks like US tablets have NVflash disabled. I don't know if this means all ROW tablets are unlocked, but I haven't heard of anyone with an ROW tablet not having NVflash access. ( I also haven't looked very hard)
Stay tuned, I have a feeling there will some nice breakthroughs on this tablet eventually

1) Probably you will get Honeycomb version. I do not believe there is anyone upgrading the stock. And probably no ICS loaded devices were made (seems like production stopped some time ago).
2) Hard to tell, as it is unclear which version Amazon is selling. But generally if you have some basic experience, you will make it.
3) There is no working aftermarket ROM. But after upgrade to ICS the situation is a lot better. Using alternative launcher ignoring the Lenovo SW can make the job.
4) I bought it for the same reason. More than HW you fight the SW looking for the best app to make your notes. The Lenovo SW is not usable. And every alternative I tried has some issues.
I clearly understand your dilemma. I doubt that waiting for Samy Note tablet will satisfy you, as this will be the first Samy experience with pen ... I expect a lot of problems, which Lenovo somehow solved till now with ICS release.
I was buying it as replacement for old Lenovo Windows tablet with pen. Especially in combination with OneNote it was great tool ... but it was old, heavy and broken by years of use.
After some time, I got used to this tablet, and I do not use notebook going to client. There TPT can make the job. For other more demanding work I have standard "big" PC.
Of course ... if you buy TPT you will have to accept some "features" like slow charging without full power off (and cold boot after charge), or sometimes frozen unlocking touch till you do not pull the pen of. I don't know how you, but I can live with these problems .
Generally. There is NO device with ANY operating system, which can satisfy needs of me and probably you. Having electronic alternative for paper and pen.
Anyway I'm more satisfied with current status than with lot of papers, where I usually I was not able to find the note I needed
If you need such device, go for TPT a use to live with it. Not perfect, but probably the best available.
Galaxy Note 10.1
Woohoo, the galaxy note 10.1 has been officially announced for release later this month. If you have waited this long, a couple of weeks shouldn't bee too much. As for me, I'm simply salivating at the specs - Quad core processor, wifi+3g versions, 7000mAh battery, 1200 x 800 display; weighing in at approx 600g (way lighter than the ipad). Oh and you can bet that samsung's pen will be far better than the horrific stylus on the thinkpad (just ask galaxy note users). Having had a galaxy s2/s3, I know that samsung products are extremely easy to root, mod update, etc; unlike the thinkpad where even updating is a pain. All in all, I'm elated that I can finally toss out this piece of garbage that lenovo put out. Infact, if someone offers me 100pounds for my thinkpad, I'll toss it to them with some change.

how do you like it
Not very impressive resolution for the price.

Omni for SM-P605 (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition LTE)

I'm a long-time Omni user on my Nexus devices. My wife recently got a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition (LTE) as part of her contract, and I cannot begin to explain how frustrating it is to be back in "Samsung's world". The hardware is incredible (Snapgragon 800, 3GB RAM, 2560x1600 display) but it is loaded with bloat on an outdated 4.3 ROM (only the wifi-only model (Samsung Octa) has Kitkat so far).
Now I know that for a device to be supported, it needs a maintainer. This is a very expensive, niche device, and I presume that there are not many users out there that will be suitable. So my question is, what does the job of a maintainer entail exactly? I've built CM for a couple of devices from source before, but that's about the extent of my knowledge with regards to custom ROM development. Is that sufficient?
I'm thinking that this device should be a fairly easy bring-up, being based on the same SOC as the Nexus 5 (amongst others).
How can I make this happen?

Being a maintainer takes a LOT of reverse engineering skills. Integrating the OEM's blobs with "normal" AOSP or CAF sources can be a royal pain.
The best bet is to try and start your bringup by using a similar device as a starting point. Same platform is OK, same platform AND OEM is better.
For example, all of the Exynos 4210 devices (except the Tab 7 Plus/7.7) share a common device tree and kernel nowadays (the 7Plus/7.7 were too different from others in the family)
All of the Exynos 4412 devices have a common device tree that's inherited, and a common kernel.
Unfortunately, unlike the Note and Note 2, the Note 3 is significantly different from the GS4. However, your device might be similar to a Note 3, so you MIGHT be able to get started by adding Note 10.1 2014-specific parts to the Note3 kernel and modifying the device tree in a similar fashion.
The best way to learn maintainer skills is to find a device that is semi-supported and start working on figuring out how to fix its features that aren't quite working right. (In my case, I worked with atinm on resolving I777-specific issues to get that device lit up, then started working on remaining I9100/I777-common issues in CM back in the ICS days, then started on the Note which was similar to I777/I9100)
Expect to spend a LOT of time Googling stuff and searching through code. "grep", "strings" and "readelf -d" are your friends. (grep is for searching anything, strings is for looking at the strings in a blob, readelf -d shows you what libraries a blob depends on)
Even an experienced maintainer spends ****-tons of time searching for things and digging through data.
Patience is the most critical thing for a maintainer to have.

Yeah, no one has done an Omni bringup yet. IbrahimA was considering doing one based on the CM bringup but he hasn't had the time.

Difference between 2016 Tab A and current version?

Hey guys, hope this is the right place to post this. Is there a difference between the 2016 Tab A 10.1 Wifi and the current version? One seems to be 16GB and one is 32GB - is that the only difference? Thanks very much in advance
You're right, that's the only difference. It's the same device, they just added an extra storage option and changed the model number. Even the firmware is the same, though the build number might not be. If you get the 580 (old model) off Amazon instead of getting a 585 (new model), you'd save about $40 after accounting for the bigger SD card you'd have to buy to deal with only having 16GB of internal storage. The different model number could prove to be more significant than it might appear, though: since Samsung uses a different model number for the new ones, this could make it possible to end software updates and give the 585 Oreo, but not the 580, despite them being almost exactly the same. Basically they might be planning to sell the same device for 4 years, but force people to buy a new one 2 years in if they want to get Oreo, by making a tiny token change (the storage) that they can use to change up the model number. Like mattress companies do to keep you from price-comparing between stores. Only time will tell, but I'm not sure the savings are big enough to be worth taking that risk for. Keep in mind, this is pure conspiracy theory territory, so take it how you will.
If you're looking to root or customize, that's a bit more uncertain. I'm not sure how you'd fare in trying to use a T580/P580 ROM and recovery on a T585/P585 device, because despite their being identical, some of the drivers and proprietary apps might have model numbers and firmware build numbers (which are probably also different) hardcoded in. Even though there are zero actual changes in the hardware or software other than more storage, tiny things like that could still make trouble. Not that there are any non-Touchwiz-based ROMs for these anyway, so if you're looking to root and install Xposed and an ad blocker, you should always do it yourself step-by-step rather than take the security risk of flashing what is effectively someone else's post-root Nandroid backup, even if you know it would work. You have to go through 90% of that process before flashing a ROM anyway. As far as I know, there's a 585 TWRP.

The T580 and T585 were released at the same time.
The T580 is a wifi only model and the T585 is the LTE model.
There seems to be 16gb and 32gb models available.
Samsung have not yet released the new Tab A.

Does anyone here own a Samsung Galaxy Tab A (8.4) (SM-T307U)?

Seems like a simple enough question but I've been having a really difficult time trying to gain traction about information on this tablet or any tablet.
Yes. i've owned one since is was released last year but there is NOTHING on xda. Even though it's new and fairly speedy, no one has worked on an ROM for this. I wanted to unlock and root it so I can use it on another ISP/Mobile.

It's very very frustrating, there seems to be very little support for it. Do you know if you can charge while having a thumb drive hooked up? Like OTG style? I have purchased 2 tablets so far and neither have this capabilities. I don't want to be purchasing a third with the same result

I just ordered o e and it showed up today and it also does not charge while a thumb drive is hooked up. Have you found any information or help on this product anywhere. Do you know of any other forums where people actually answer problems? I am so impossibly frustrated

No need to root to switch to another isp. get unlock code from current isp, install odin 3.14.1 and install any isp firmware you want from https://galaxyfirmware.com/model/SM-T307U/ I had an at&t branded with android9, and now i am running wind/freedom android11 firmware.

Hi, thnx for the useful info. Did you have trouble getting the unlock code from at&t? Where did you enter that code? A specific app on the at&t rom I'm guessing?
Getting a sprint version of this device, but want to use it t-mobile. Have read that just factory reset device and use odin to flash other firmware would work, does that sound feasible to you? I'm kind of doubting that but have no idea really.
It used to be flashing diff rom would sim unlock, but not anymore I don't think.
thnx for taking the time, so little info for this available.
cheers
No problem with at&t, although i had to impersonate a US location. Start here: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/unlockstep1
Like I said, vendor unlock, install odin on your pc, use odin to install the desired firmware you downloaded.
The firmware should boot up, but maybe the radio bands are different between the two isp's? and therefore the LTE part of the tablet may not work. i don't care since I don't install a sim card, just use it on wifi.
Thanks a lot for the info guys. For anyone else reading, I used 'T307UVLS6CUH1' (BMC) - and it is unbranded and doesn't have a ton of bloatware.
Also, since there are so few users on this thing, will also drop that I made a stand for it here:
Galaxy Tab A Stand by xnappo
This is a horizontal stand for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020). Admittedly it is a bit specific because of the not-so-popular tablet and the use of a NetDot Gen10 magnetic USB cable. One could use this with USB-C directly - but I do really recommend that (likely stress on USB port). You...

Hello,
I got unlocked ATT SM-T307UZNAATT from eBay.
My provider is Red Pocket, and I have ATT-compatible SIM.
When I try to place a call - ATT window appears and askes to log in to ATT account or create one.
How could I place calls?
Would appreciate any help!

How is the speed/lag? This tablet is mega slow, but I was wondering if I loaded different firmware (currently on AT&T) that it might help, since it can't be rooted.
My 8-yr old rooted Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is better than this thing, but alas a few apps won't run on 32-bit architecture. I think I will relegate this AT&T "brick" to my exercise bike for an entertainment interface.

Meh - no better. It is pretty ridiculous - I was very happy with my 2015 Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 - but it started crashing all the time. This one is slower, thicker, lower resolution, and heavier! 32 GB really isn't enough storage either.
It is super annoying there are not any good 8 inch Android tablets. The Huawei M6 8.4 looks okay, but being in the US it is a bit of a pain to get.

The only great 8" tablet is the Lenovo Legion Y700, running SD870 with 12gb ram. 2560x1600, but IPS and not OLED.
I own the Tab S 8.4 (2014), the Tab A 8.4 (2020) and the Y700 (2021, 8.8").
Tab A is terrible.
It's painfully slow.
It needs root.
It has the same RAM as a tablet 6 YEARS older than it, with LOWER resolution and ! much worse performance. I wish it could be fixed.... Android 10 Lineage is out for Tab S 8.4.

I have done quite a few mods/tweaks to system/Global/Secure settings and also disabled Gaming Optimization Service (GOS) via Alliance Sheild X, it has made a MASSIVE difference. This device's (SM-T307U) performance is being HEAVILY limited by software-based restrictions. Most of which can be disabled without root. I can go into more detail as to how ive sped up this device if anyone is interested.
NOTE - If someone has the ATT version and can drop the .IMG or Firmware .zip that'd be awesome.
Ill keep trying to find a way to root this device until i get a new one, if anyone else has any success, DM me.

I've already deleted, turned-off and disabled everything I can. It's a good bit snappier, but still a dog.
I actually have 2, so I may play around with deleting/disabling apps via ADB. But it's not battery drain, which with some securetask special permissions I've gotten it to SIP power while the screen is off (varies, as low as 2% per day up to about 6-7%).
I checked the usual sources and couldn't find any AT&T image files.

Yeah this this is good on power, it is just severely limited. Judging from similar devices with the same exynos processor, there's got to be something holding it back. I again recommend using SetEdit or something similar to modify some params in the settings tables. The line I highlighted is in both this tablet and my Galaxy S22 & S21. I also found a param in there called "Enhanced CPU responsiveness" which was set to off, after turning that on, I noticed a massive gain in my tablet.
Also worth noting is I added the line "Allow_more_heat_value" with a value of "30" and it allows all cores to boot to max.

I'll have to give this a shot. I wouldn't think AT&T throttled the CPU, which means Sammie did it for some reason. Probably to hit some sort of battery life benchmark. Or maybe it caused instability in some devices. But being a mid-tier processor you wouldn't expect that it needed to be throttled.
I believe Sammie is giving up on the Exynos processors. I bet they had issues on this tablet, said "screw it" and just **** this out with a throttled cpu.

It's 100% a Samsung related throttle. From my understanding, it's done because they use many of the same parts/processors in various devices, so as a way to control device specific performances, they set limitations. For example, this tablet has the same processor as some of their other "Higher-end" models (if I'm not mistaken), so to keep this tablet from outperforming the others, it's limited. I'm sure there are other reasons, like the battery benchmark bit that you mentioned too.
But yeah. This is 100% a Samsung based throttling.

I’d be interested in how you tweaked this tablet to function better.

Can you please share the mods/tweaks you've done?
I have one of these purely for its size, I travel over Europe and as the seating space is limited the smaller the better. I am running the Canadian Wind software but if anyone can give me a run through on disabling apps/services to speed up a bit that would be helpful.
I am going to buy the Lenovo Legion Y700 but only when a global version with LTE is available.
Cheers
Nick
