for unlocked bootloader
To install OTA
1- Restore original boot on magisk manager
2- Install OTA and reboot (Install magisk to inactive slot wont work and high risk boot-loop)
3- Once the update is finish, reboot to bootloader
4. Boot (Do NOT FLASH) magisk patched image (fastboot boot magistpatched)
5. Open Magisk Manager and do Magisk Install (Direct Install)
6. Reboot and you are done

Do you think I could use a custom recovery (LOS or pixel experience) and use the adb side load and do the ota that way then reflash magisk right after?

Just restore your boot image
and open system update and hit check update to download and install the ota.
and make sure you dont connect to some funky VPN that for some reason showing your location outside the USA

I would turn off all magisk modules first and then uninstall magisk through the magisk app then install the OTA.

Will OTA wipe data?

Phone services stop working...

Just wanted to say thanks for this! Definitely needed these

NVM

How do I flash these and return to stock? Currently in rooted, but on custom ROM. Thanks in advance.

Problems after rooting Mi A1 (using TWRP stable build reloeased today)

Okay, so I rooted my Mi A1 with the help of Dhananjay Bhosale's video uploaded today.
Everything worked fine until I discovered that I couldn't install OTA updates. Pretty common thing for rooted devices (although somewhat disappointing). But the weird thing is, I was on the September security patch while installing this update but then when I booted into the system after everything was done and dusted, a notification showed that the system was finishing up with installing the August update and that the September update was still to be downloaded and installed. So I did that but the system failed to install it.
Then I checked XDA and Dhananjay, in his XDA account, has suggested that OTA updates could be installed by switching partitions (new thing in Android N). So I did that, redownloaded the September patch and everything installed just fine but then I realized that there were no root privileges in this particular partition. After some effort, I somehow re-entered recovery and switched back to the other partition, hoping that the update would stick. But it didn't. As soon as I rebooted back into system, there was that notification again (finishing up the August update and telling me to download the September patch).
So basically, I am back to square one.
Anyone knows how to break out of this vicious circle?

mine also any sol to fix this?
Steps to fix any root mess-up that might happened and/or corrupt system from tampering with files.
1. Follow this guide, you can start from the flashing part
2. Download the mi flash app + a1 fastboot stock rom
3. Flash using the guide, make sure you select 'save user data'! or you will lose all your data!!
4. Once the flashing is complete you will reboot into the august patch, go to updates and install all the updates as usual
5. Root/Flash recovery using your favorite method.
I played around the system partition too much and had some issues with play services, also I couldn't update to october patch, after doing the above, everything works great. just use this guide anytime you want a clean slate.
Also always backup everything on twrp, always a useful thing to do.
Good luck
I didn't have any such problem. This is what I did: I was on Sep patch on 'b' rooted with magisk --> installed Oct ota update --> rebooted --> rebooted to twrp, flashed magisk 13.4. and rebooted to system --> everything works.
BTW how did you get root; CF-auto root or Magisk?

The AIO tool uses CF root. Normally you FlashFire would be able to capture the OTA update and flash it but some have reported that it's not happening for our device. IMO you can do one of the two things.
You can do what @sooti suggested till step 4 and then root using Magisk and TWRP. Refer here.
Or
You can find which partition has sep update installed; reboot to it and unroot SuperSU; flash stock sep boot.img and install oct OTA update. After that follow this to get root.
BTW you don't need to flash TWRP; just boot to it and flash Magisk to get root.

Hi. As I mentioned, I am not even on the September patch. I used to be but then I rooted it today (installed Magisk) and suddenly I'm back to the August patch. September patch only installs in 'a', which is not rooted. That doesn't really serve my purpose.

Hi. There seems to be a problem with what you suggest. The video I followed does almost the same thing. I even have TWRP, along with Magisk of course. The problem is, when I boot to 'a' (the partition that successfully installs the September update), I find that it isn't rooted. Magisk is inactive. And root checker says that root isn't properly installed. So obviously, the question of unrooting is rendered moot.
I want to be able to install the OTA update in my rooted partition and make it stick. People have installed OTA updates to rooted ROMs (mostly using FlashFire), but Flash Fire is giving me an unusual error, something about being unable to install OTA even though it has detected it due to being unable to find some files in boot/recovery folder or something like that.

I think I should update a little bit : I tried rooting both the partitions and what I saw was that I am on September patch on both of them now. However, the problem still persists albeit in a slightly different manner. Currently I am on partition 'a' because the WiFi is having some weird problems in partition 'b'. So now I have the update notification for the October security patch but after downloading, the system gets stuck on Step 1 of 2 of installing the update. I guess, side-effect of rooting. But this isn't the issue.
I found out that the real problem is the FlashFire app. Since I have downloaded the October patch and rooted both partitions, I had hoped that FlashFire would work now, but that same error persists (which is something like Update Engine binaries could not be found, so update cannot be handled - I have asked a separate question about that, if you would be so kind as to go to my profile and check it out).
I got bootloop when installing october security patch......
I have unlocked bootloader and also rooted my phone using CF-auto-root but when try to install october security update after reboot my phone got bootloop.....
So, what do i do now ?

Thanks for clarifying. It is interesting that you are on Sep patch on both the partitions. IMO the sure shot way of solving your problem would be to go back to stock and root using Magisk.
Follow the "Flashing Guide for Fastboot Update"guide. Download the Sep fastboot rom for Step 2; Select 'clean all' for Step 5 but do note that it will wipe all user data. Now you will be on stock sep rom on slot a. You'll get OTA notification for the Oct patch, go ahead and install. After rebooting you will be on stock oct rom on slot b.
After finishing, download TWRP and Magisk from here or you can download this package, I have included recovery and Magisk. Copy Magisk-v13.4.zip to your device.
Go to fastboot mode and verify that you're unlocked and all drivers are installed.
While in fastboot type
Code:
fastboot getvar all
You can see which slot is active.
I suggest you NOT to flash TWRP but boot to it instead.
To do so type
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
In a few secs you should be in TWRP. If you're not booting into TWRP disconnect the device and switch off; Press vol down button and connect the USB. You should now be in fastboot mode. Try typing the cmd again and it should work.
Flash Magisk-v13.4.zip via TWRP.
Reboot to system
Download the latest Magisk Manager and install. DO NOT update Magisk.
Download and install as usual when the next OTA update arrives. You will lose the root when you reboot. But no worries, just reflash Magisk-v13.4.zip via TWRP and you will be good to go.
P.S. @ topjohnwu is working to get official magisk on our device. When that arrives you will be able to patch Magisk to the OTA update without going to TWRP.

You've to use resetprop tool for that. You can modify an existing module or put a script at /magisk/.core/service.d (I think.... haven't done that in a long while). You can ask magisk related queries here (unofficial magisk 13.4) or here (official)

[GUIDE] Root using Magisk, keep stock recovery for OTA

This is a guide for people who want a rooted MIUI. It will keep stock recovery and system partitions untouched to allow MIUI OTAs to install without problems. It will also pass Google's safety net test so bank apps keep working. The best of both worlds really
Requirements:
- Unlocked bootloader
- Windows PC
- fastboot (present in the miunlock app folder)
- Latest TWRP (download here)
- Latest Magisk (download here)
Steps:
- Install latest Magisk app
- Put latest Magisk zip on your device storage (SD)
- Shut down device
- put latest twrp.img in miunlock folder
- Connect phone to PC
- Press volume down and power button to boot to fastboot mode
- Open "Command Prompt" on your PC
- Type: (without quotes)
----- "cd C:\Users\[your name]\Desktop\miflash_unlock-en-2.3.803.10" . (or wherever the folder is)
----- "fastboot devices"
----- "fastboot boot twrp.img"
- In a few seconds, TWRP will boot on your phone. DO NOT swipe to make changes to system.
- In TWRP, flash the Magisk zip
Enjoy root

Same as my question. Let say system partition won't touch by root, but twrp is installed over the Mi stock recovery. Will it install Eta?
This guide DOES NOT flash TWRP. Stock recovery remains so OTA updates work.
The only thing that is touched by this guide is the "Boot" partition to install magisk. You can restore stock "Boot" using magisk manager's uninstall option at any moment and be 100% stock again.
Ok, but is Xposed etc. possible?

Well... That's I mean, boot TWRP using adb
After have TWRP, how can i get update via OTA?
it successfully worked for Redmi Note 4 global beta/stable MIUI9.2
even installed camera api 2 using magisk module
Just a quick question. I've TWRP right now with SuperSU. So I'll remove SuperSU, flash Magisk in TWRP. All good till now, but I'd want the stock recovery, a flash-able zip maybe. How can I get it? From where?
**[EDIT]**
Okay. One can get it from fastboot ROMs available at MIUI website (here), extract the pack and get recovery.img.
Installed successfully on miui 9.2.1.0 stable
Now when a new update for magisk is released, how should i update it??
I have two questions:
1. Why does the bootloader need to be unlocked and how can I do that?
2. What happens to Magisk if I install an OTA?
I'd like to keep the phone untouched but I need to change emojis and with Xposed I can use Youtube in background.

When an OTA is available, please go to Magisk Manager → Uninstall → Restore Images. Do not reboot immediately or you will have Magisk uninstalled. This will restore your boot (or dtbo if available) back to 100% untouched stock images in order to pass verifications. This step is required before doing any of the following steps written below!

[GUIDE] How to get Magisk Root & Xposed on Oreo 8.0 (STOCK)

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR DEVICE BRICKS, SD CARD DAMAGES OR NUCLEAR WAR STARTS.
Rooting method described below will work on Oreo-running devices ONLY (confirmed on build OPN27.76-12-22 and on OPNS27.76-12-22-9).
Please follow all steps very carefully and make sure you downloaded correct versions of all .zip files mentioned in my instruction!
ROOT (SafetyNet test will PASS!)
1. Download all files listed below:
- twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img (CLICK)
- Magisk-v17.1.zip or newer if availabe (CLICK)
- f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip (CLICK)
2. Flash TWRP using Fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img
3. Flash Magisk-v17.1.zip (or newer if available).
4. Go to TWRP/Settings and open Terminal.
5. Run both of following commands:
Code:
echo KEEPVERITY=true>>/data/.magisk
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.magisk
6. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
7. Reboot (it is crucial in case of installing Xposed afterwards).
8. Optional but recommended: update your Magisk Manager to the latest version (CLICK).
9. Open Magisk -> Modules and update f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module to the newest version (can be done only via Magisk Manager only if new version of f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module is available).
10. Enjoy rooted Oreo.
UPDATE 03.10.2018
If you flashed everything as described in OP and noticed that you got stuck in boot, go to TWRP again and:
1. Uninstall Magisk using latest Magisk uninstaller.
2. Flash Magisk 17.1.zip AGAIN (yes.).
3. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
4. Enjoy rooted phone.
PS. I do not know why device does not start after first flashing to be honest, but these four steps above are confirmed by several users (and by me).
UPDATE 03.10.2018
XPOSED (be careful: Xposed for Oreo is still in BETA distribution and flashing it will break your SafetyNet!)
1. Open Magisk Manager -> Downloads.
2. Download Xposed Installer (the one from the screen below):
https://image.ibb.co/byLUuK/Xposed_Framework.png
3. Let Magisk install it.
4. Reboot.
5. Open Xposed Installer (you will see orange exclamation mark, don't worry).
6. Reboot once again.
7. Voila.
Hit THANKS if I helped!

@rafikowy ah, so basically the problem was with dm-verity and forced encryption? That makes sense. So it would basically also work if you'd not extract the boot.img from the OTA zip and mod it with Magisk manager with both enabled and flash that (might be easier than flashing normal Magisk and then make the changes), so you'd basically just flash the img and the module zip in TWRP.
Well, if no bigger bugs appear I might try the Oreo OTA and root tomorrow. Don't think it will be here on its own till then, even if it's already the official rollout (Indian and brasilian users seem to get it officially)
First magisk manager did not want to open, but a reboot solved. thanks
So, Lenovorola is still "undecided" in regards to patching F2FS.
I wonder why...
Where can I find the firmware or OTA to update Oreo on my 1635-02 with Android 7.1.1 Patch December? Is possible back to Stock Oreo or Nougat?

Only a Soak test is available, the link is in the thread in the ROM section. And yes, it doesn't seem to update your bootloader, it was already successfully testet to go back to 7.1.1

Unfortunately it does not work. : (TWRP prompts for a PIN to decrypt data.) How to select cancel and install Magisk on installation f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround-2018.1.31.zip displays an error that does not detect magisk or is incompatible. How do I format the date everything is installed but the phone does not turn on... Any idea?
Sorry but, if verity is enabled, that means you are unable to modify /system files?

I gone back to 7.1.1 Nov patch and everything is OK with my IMEI. Just flash 7.1.1 Plus ROM with TWRP. One issue what I have - In can't mount OEM partition in TWRP.
Could someone provide a TWRP backup of the 8.0 Soak? I've modified the system partition and this method stoped working. All the 8.1 roms have a so bugged camera, I don't wanna go back to them

Nope. It's impossible for now. You can`t go back to full stock, because you'll lose your IMEI with flashing full 7.1.1 FW with RSD or fastboot.

Uninstall Magisk with the .zip from their site. Github here
Instal stock recovery like you did to install custom recovery.
Next, download the C.27 update and run it from the file manager. Phone will reboot and start updating
After update, just do the whole process to root C.27 version like for Android 9.

I tried several thins to install Magisk succesfully with no luck.
I received my Global x2 Pro this thursday and i successfully unlocked the bootloader and flashed twrp recovery. But when I flask the magisk 20.4 zip and reboot my device, i get an error saying that my boot / recovery partition is corrupt. I have to install C27 again from twrp and it boots up.
Can anybody help me how to install Magisk succesfully? It's driving me nuts. Also, i cant download the vbmeta.img from the OP. So i tried to extract the vbmeta.img from the c27 image to flash, but also no lucck
Edit: Finally having it working with the Orangefox recovery with the vbmeta.img. I thought that the link in OneDrive wasnt working, but it was my home networks which was blocking OneDrive. Problem solved!

Isn't it possible to install ota update from twrp? (I use mauronofrio). Is it mandatory to unroot, install C27 and then re-root?

It's possible if someone makes a flashable zip, though I dont know of that can be done for every phone. Otherwise you need a stock recovery to install the OTA.

Like @adsubzero said. Unless you have a custom ozip file to flash on TWRP, you need to have stock recovery to install a standard ozip.

Are you using a custom recovery? TWRP does not work with A11 yet.
Extract the boot image from a factory ZIP and flash it in bootloader:
Code:
fastboot flash boot "boot.img"
Then, boot TWRP:
Code:
fastboot boot "twrp.img"
And install Magisk using the canary zip. Please note that you do not use the quotation marks.
Alternatively, you can boot to TWRP and sideload the OTA, then reboot to bootloader, boot TWRP again, and install Magisk.

Your bootloader must be unlocked to use this method.
Start fresh, use the OTA or the factory image. I did this coming from Android 10 without wiping.
Download the Magisk Manager Canary APK and installer ZIP here
Download the latest TWRP image here, put it in your platform tools folder and rename to twrp.img
Using platform tools, reboot your phone into bootloader:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Then, boot (DO NOT INSTALL) TWRP:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
Install the Magisk Canary ZIP, reboot to system.
Yes I am using canary latest, and did everything as you explaining, still getting bootloop. But I will get done sooner or later )

+1 on this method, worked for me, thank you for the instructions
I'm also bootlooping. Did you solve your problem?
I installed through the OTA button. Of course, I lost root, so I followed the above instructions, but am stuck at the G loading.
The canary zip is magisk-debug.zip, correct?
EDIT: I overlooked that I had EdXposed installed with active modules and I don't think it works with Android 11 yet, at least not the modules I use (Gravity box). I'll try rooting again tonight with EdXposed modules disabled.

Yes, both the apk and the zip are named "magisk_debug".
I am not sure why you are bootlooping. If you installed the OTA, it should have overwritten /boot with the stock image, and flashing Magisk Canary should work. It is possible that if you had modules enabled before and didn't disable them, you could have issues.

I disabled the edxposed modules and still got stuck at the G logo. I'm not sure what else I could be doing wrong, but it's obviously me or my setup. I'm going to downgrade to Android 10 because the modifications I rely on from GravityBox are more important to me than the new features of Android 11.
Thanks for the help.

Anyone have luck downgrading from 11 to 10? I've tried several different 10 builds and I get "Error: Slot Unbootable: Load Error" in bootloader.
I used the same commands I always use to upgrade builds:
fastboot flash radio radio-walleye-...img
fastboot reboot bootloader
fastboot update image-walleye-...zip
I can flash 11 again and all is fine, but I haven't been able to go back to 10.
