Hi everyone,
up to today, I was totally happy with my HTC Hero (unbranded).
However, the LED's (both on top and the trackball) do not show any sign of function any more.
The phone has not dropped and was not exposed to heat or anything.
First I thought this might be a software bug, but even after a hard reset, the LED's don't come up at all any more (even not if charging the phone).
Anyone else here with a problem like that? Any solution yet?
I almost can't imagine this is a hardware fault but on the other hand if the hard reset doesn't fix it, what could?
Thanks for your help,
Chris
Hi.
I can ask the very same question too... I have had the HTC Hero since the friday before yesterday and after a couple of days the LED's simply stopped working. I had thoughts about trying a factory reset but with your posting it seems it would be in vain... :-(
So yeah... count me up on this one...
UPDATE:
Today it is Sunday and the time here in Sweden is 22:05 and I had to do my very first hardcore hardware reset (HOME+BACK+POWER) since every radio in the phone simply stopped working. After the reset was done the led's still won't light up when charging...
The LED at the top doesn't light up for missed calls/texts/emails anymore (the trackball still glows)... although it does still flash for batt.low/charging it doesn't for anything else... I'm pretty sure it used to... or am I mistaken??
mine died 2 days ago, also did a hard reset and still nothing....today my headphone jack stopped working, just plays the music through speakers and ignores the headphones totally :/ not amused :/

My headfone jack stopped working some 3-4 days ago too... what is going on??? And the 7 days grace period is over for me...
lol, i bought it in Netherlands, live in Croatia, my fall from grace is beyond yours

write to HTC, i did
i'm hoping it's a software thing, can't be that so many people have hardware issues at the same time :/

You just made me realize it's the same with mine
- LED's don't work (top and trackball)
- Button lights don't work
- headphone jack doesn't work any more either
So all these things seem to belong together...

What software have you got installed? Is this a similar thing like TasKiller that killed the clock so Alarms didn't work?
Then again, you said you did hard resets... But if you did a hard reset, it shouldn't be the software of the phone as thats back to normal.
Try taking the memory card out, only thing I can think of!

This happens when a bluetooth connection has been made. It ignores the headphone jack. Close the connection in bluetooth settings and it ill be fine.
Don't quote me on this, but I think I remember seeing an option in the phone setting section that controls the track ball and what not. It may be worth having a look.

Well... no :-/.
BT isn't switched on, 3,5mm headphones aren't even recognized after a hard reset any more.
This is not a software thing as it seems, at least not one the user can repair on his own.

Yeah, you're right, there is an option for that. I've switched that back off and on a thousand times before and after hard resetting the device, that doesn't help unfortunately.

Yeah... I only got standard soft like shazam and streamfurious installed. Then after the hard reset, only stock software was on it of course...
Seems like it's a hardware defect or something the user cannot influence software-wise. May hard-resetting doesn't reset everything in the phone, who knows. I even took out SIM and SD card, no luck.
However this is a bug HTC should look at closely, people are complaining in several forums and it seems like I'm not the only one with this issue...
i don't use BT, never turned it on and just checked, it's obviously off :/ don't remember coming across a trackball option in settings, but Notification option is on :/
let's just assume that it's not our doing since so many people have same 2 problems
Mine packed up last night must be a tech issue I think heat
sorry for asking a silly question though. is the led supposed to flash on missed calls or messages? cause the only time mine works is when charging.
I have the same problem. after a few days the headphone simply wasn't recognized. And at the same time the LED's and trackball lights were broken.
Hard reset didn't work.
It was after I rooted the phone.
How was that with you?
For the headphone problem I found a workaround. This switch-widget turns the headphone back on and the speaker off.

same here, check topic Q&A but here also the alarm doesnt work correctly...djeezes;..
same here!
well i have the same problem whit the LED's.... just stop working aften 3-4 days of use
maybe we should all write to HTC to complain as a group, this definitley looks like a manufacturing fault to me , esp as it is happening so soon after buying and using
My phone has been acting very strangely for the past hour. I've been making dinner in the kitchen for awhile while the phone sat on my office desk, screen side up with the screen turned off.
I heard the phone ringing so I ran upstairs to answer. A client of mine was calling to ask me why I had just called him. I hadn't even touched the phone for atleast a couple hours so I just apologized and hung up. I start making my way back downstairs when the phone rings again. This time it's a friend of mine asking the same thing. After apologizing again and hanging up, I check the call log only to find there's 15 outgoing calls in the past 40 minutes or so.
What the hell is going on? I soft reset the phone and so far it hasn't called anyone. Most of the people it called were my clients or business associates who I can well imagine don't appreciate being called on a sunday evening. Has any other HD2 owner had a similar thing happen to them? I'm running a stock 1.66 ROM, if that matters.
Hi, I bought a cradle for my HD2 and it started to call various numbers in the wee small hours (when in the cradle)- much to my friends' annoyance. I put it down to a poor power supply for the cradle (it was a european 2 plug transformer so I had to use an adapter). Since changing the power supply, the phone has behaved itself.
Was your phone on charge - if so, maybe check the quality of the charger, if not, then sorry but I have no suggestions.
Good luck!
Jesus, that's a nasty fault. Keep us updated...
same here
I had the same, some days ago. I was listening music on my hd2 with the earphones. Suddenly the phone interrupted the music, to make a call. Some minutes later my colleague called me to ask me why I needed him.
Soft reset, and it seems stable. but such jokes are expensive, since am mostly abroad.
I sort of had the same thing my hd2 was sending txts to ppl for 1 day till Idid a softreset. but it dished out 20 txts before I found out.
i think the reason of this is the big touchscreen sensitivity bug. sometimes my touchscreen has also his own life and dials numbers or changes tabs.
maybe it appears more often in cradle because the phone is not locked while it is docked to it! for me it mostly happens when the device is connected by usb to my notebook - because it is unlocked... i hope you understand what i mean.
maybe the reduction of sensitivity will be a solution for you!
I'm getting this! my mate played me a 4 minute voicemail of me telling the kids off today!
My mrs has also said i've rung her (and she stayed on and listened in!!! NOT GOOD lol) it's happened a few times with her
Now, this could be that i forgot to lock the phone before i put it in pocket, but it's happening a bit too much now, i will monitor it from now on making damn sure i lock it before pocketing it
Ha! Had the same happen this morning - driving to work, plugged my headphones in as the cd player in the car isn't working, 20 mins down the road it decided to ring a friend - 3 times in quick succession. As it was in front of me in my car phone holder I saw it happen and cancelled the call as it was very early!
Restarted the phone and it didn't do it again.... until driving home from work, same thing, same person... he was the last person that I had called previously, but even so... a bit odd!!
I pulled the headphones out and it didn't happen again....
Weird, eh?

i got the same problem once.. it happened only with the earplugs pluged in Oo
well doesnt matter, it did it never again.
but i noticed that the phone called only the last number i called.. only the last one, i even called my home number, and tried it again.. it called automatically the last number then -> my home
but yea, like i said, it never happened again, and its like 2 months since then
The exactly same thing happened to me too. I was listeing to music with my earplugs and it suddenly started calling my girlfriend (I guess it was lonely) but the interesting thing is that It never finished the call. It started dialing and after 1sec it automaticly disconected. SR did the trick.
The funny thing is that this happened to me when I was just having the worst morning ever (With cold I went to school for final exam and I forget my jacket (suit) in train and even that I woke up 1hour early I still came late because the bus i was supposed to be in crashed before my bus station, well but thats offtopic)
I've since spotted other forums with people saying the same thing when headphones are plugged in - my experience was with non Htc headphones - not sure if that's relevant? Also - just before it happened I had the audio skipping problem - again, not sure if that's related either - I've seen a thread on here somewhere regarding music player skipping issues, so will check that out....
Cheers folks!
steve
same thing here, phone calls last dialed number, while listening to music with non htc headpones...
has noone found a solution by now?
eh just found out, its not relevant, that one is listening to music, its just the connected headphones ;/
Correct. It has got something to do with the connector of the headphone.
the connection-plugs are too narrow. It doesn't matter if you have a 'real' or immitation headset..
It is an htc disfunction which also was caused with the HTC Diamond and other htc phones.
Seems that htc aren't able to fix this!
btw The best thing to do is to call a fake number first; like 0000001 or so because the htc (when touching the wire / connector wrongly) will only call the last number used, which is very annoying when it calls your wife in the middle of the night going to work...
Cheers

I no it doesn't help, but I have never had this problem, with using any headphones I have I got 3 different sets and non of them do this ,
you dont have a dodgy program installed like that crazy game that was making international calls do you

no not at all, just flashed a new rom (miri+dinik) and task 29 inbefore.
@qs2010: so buying a stock headphone, doesn't solve ?
urgh too bad i just ordered one :/
i am pretty sure, it was behaving normally, the time i used the stock ones (lost them)
Weirdly, since formatting my memory card using the onboard function on the phone (to try to cure the music stuttering problem) my phone hasn't called anyone randomly when using either of the two sets of headphones or audio out cables! It also cured the music stutter issue!
I have the same problem when I plug in/out earbuds or headphones, but it's intermittent; basically the jack plug messes with the buttons wire and cause the Call button to be sent multiple times, which should (depends on your ROM) cause the phone to call the last contact on your history.
To quickly check if you have it, try plugging in/out your headphones, maybe with a video playing, or turning the jack plug while they're connected.
Doesn't happen with me right now. Not sure if it's because of the ROM or the humidity.
+1
Absolutely the same thing is happening to me. I watch films on my HD2 very often(using non-HTC headphones) and sometimes it starts dialing the last dialled number from the call history list.
What I am doing now to fix it is calling myself after all phone conversations (
I hope there will be a hotfix or something because that is really annoying.
I've had this problem occur with headphones and without. I walk regularly and use the HD2 to listen to music. Over the last 6 months it's dialed people randomly on maybe a dozen occasions. Once it starts doing it it will continue to attempt redialing until a reset.
Today however I had no headphones on, the phone was in my back pocket, and it dialed my nephew who happened to be standing right beside me. He said it was me who had phoned him, so I checked my phone and it was in the process of dialing another person entirely.
Extraordinarily annoying.
These occurred on stock rom, and more recently Energy.
From what I've read in this thread, people are describing two problems, both of which I've experienced.
Firstly, I have a non-htc charger that I have discovered causes random points of the touchscreen to act as though they have been touched. Basically, if I plug in to this charger with the phone on I can watch the screen go crazy as though someone is randomly touching and swiping it. I think this is the kind of problem people would be having if the phone calls randomly when on a charger or cradle.
Secondly, I have found that when headphones get plugged in they sometimes trigger hardware button presses. The most common problem here being that it calls the last dialled number when I plug in headphones. I've had the problem intermittently with anything I plug into the headphone jack, but some things are more likely to trigger it than others. For example, a battery-operated FM transmitter I use causes lots of problems, unpowered headphones cause only a few. My suspicion is that small voltages shorting across contacts in the headphone port as the plug is inserted mimic the functions of the HTC headphone control buttons. This might make problems more likely when there are sources of static electricity around your headphone wires, or when you plug in something powered.
Hi. I moved from a DInc on Verizon to the Vibrant because I hated the sunlight on an AMOLED, and because Verizon was stealing my money. Although honestly verizon just lowered prices, and Tmo's network is still crap in my town.
Anyways down to business: My phone is rooted, and I applied one click lag fix. I am assuming that was when problems started but then again not for sure. I've gone from stock to Vibrant5 to Vibrant6 roms, no change.
The first problem here is this: my phone always thinks it's plugged in to USB. It cycles on an off, but never just stops and stays normal. I'm talking several times a minute ''usb connected'' or whatever on, off, on, off... annoying but no big deal. Except that freaking battery meter that pops up when your phone is off but plugged in via USB starts popping up when it's not plugged in and my phone is turning on... but since there isnt really usb in, it just hangs and resets. The second I plug in a real usb, meter pops up and i just turn it on and all good.
Second problem, which makes it so bad: my phone does this things that I've seen on XDA several times where when the processor bogs down, or GPS is on, or whatever taxes the phone, it will randomly reset once or twice a day.
Put those together and what you get is me, in public away from a charger, with a phone that won't turn on. WTF. So I repeatedly take the battery out and jam the power button till once in a while I'm able to start it before the stupid usb thinks its plugged in. Other times I'm screwed till I find my car charger.
Now, what can I do? Before anyone says warranty, yes I unrooted, did my best to unlagfix, and went to the Tmo store. They ordered me a new phone. However I have to send mine in when it gets and here and would like to insure there is no root related crap for them to find, plus I'm stuck with this phone freaking out on me for another week.
I was having the same problem , but it started since.my dougther put the usb canle in her mouth xD , I just cleaned the contacts and waited a few hours but now is fine , running

If people keep messing up their phones by rooting and flashing roms and then, rather than trying to fix the problem, send them into tmobile, I bet future firmwares and android phones will be more like the iPhone and iOS.
First I would try to flash it back to stock and leave t factory. Then if problem persist, its probably hardware. I mean you are returning it anyways so flash it back to the stock rom and do a factory reset

Only had mine 3 weeks and its broken already. I have been using a desktop charger and have not been forcing it in at all, not once, I have always been very gentle inserting it it, anyway it no longer charges, it looks like the connectors have pushed themselves back so they are not flush anymore and thus no longer connecting to charge or sync.
Not happy about this at all, I had my desktop charger for my HD2 for 18 months with no problems at all, this suggest a very weak connector.
!!! BE CAREFUL !!!
Going to call in at Phones4you and see if they will swap it, I don't hold out much hope though.
Wow bad luck man, but really you don't need the F word to express your frustration.

was it an official desktop charger or 3rd party?
DO a factory reset using code *2767*3855#
(please not this will wipe everything including built in memory, so do backup before you proceed. Backup possible by moving content of internal memory to SD card by copy paste in file manager)
I had a problem when my phone stopped charging after I upgraded firmware, It would also launch Connected to computer screen when it wasnt . Thought its dead.
Did factory reset using this code and its working flawlessly ever since. Seems to be some kind of bug which happens out of nowhere as 2 people I know have experienced this after upgrading to KE2.

I was going to ask exactly the same thing...
I think the OP means that the micro usb receptacle has come away from the board and has been pushed back into the body of the phone. I hope this is not going to turn out to be a common problem as it's something that seemed plague to the Nokia N900 and it took ages for Nokia to acknowledge a design/production fault.
great advice, now it wont boot at all, just goes round in circles....
F**cked.....
anyone got any ideas?
Hi, the charger isnt really the issue, i haven't had any problems inserting the phone into the charger, ie no resistance which suggests to me it was week or loose and has gradually pushed it self back over the last 2 weeks since I have had the charger. If thats the case it would have done this with any charger or cable.
Just spoke to phones4you, they are going to exchange it for me, they didnt even grumble after I told them what happened which I thought was odd, heading off now to pick it up.
Will be interesting to see if your wifi is any better on the new phone stoolzo. Maybe you could let us know. Thanks.

remove and reinsert battery
i had this issue when running custom kernels. somehow doesnt happen with stock.
issue happens like this:
u go to bed while charging
u wake up and the phoneis off or very hot with battery and temperature warning
u reboot and it doesnt reboot, doesn't boot, just goes in circle battery display/reboot cause it doesnt seem to charge neither have enough power to boot.
removing battery + cable then putting both back = it boots again and charge normally

Yeah, did all the usual things, I have bricked phones before and always managed to turn them around but we have no CMR to flash anything from ROOT/SD so when it wouldn't boot after a factory reset I knew I was in trouble
The MHL port being loose was the tell tale sign of a fault as I hadn't misused it at all. When I compared it to my new phone I got today it was defo a little further back, just enough to prevent it connecting.
Good old phones4you, fault report to phone exchange in under an hour, impressive.
Just in case the charger had anything to do with this I am going to get rid, dont think it did but I don't want to risk it.

Ok so maybe I spoke too soon. Yesterday I was telling my brother that the Note is the most reliable phone I've ever owned.....then....
I started having issues with charging. My Note would not charge, then it would change after several resets. It would charge, then stop, then start again etc etc....making a lot of beeping noises.
Now, it seems to be charging, but Voice talk keeps loading, and I've turned off the home key activation option. I also get the notification icon saying to disable car mode.
I really hope someone can help, thanks in advance.
kris
Great, now it's not charging, again!
Actually when I get the notification issue from Voice talk, the battery starts charging for a second until the notification disappears and stops charging....
Now factory reset my phone again and charging worked while restarting and restoring but when loaded the voice talk app keeps coming up and going off, so I have a black flashing screen constantly....gonna try restarting/reset without restoring...
Hi leicashot, this shouldn't happen. Which firmware version are you currently running? I recommend installing the latest LB1 stock, unless you have AT&T Note.
Some users have reported similar symptoms when there was dust in the mini usb port. Try cleaning the device, and if all else fails, you should send it back to Samsung for repair.

No charging issues for me but my Note started doing the driving mode thing at about 3am today and has been doing it on and off all day!
Exceedingly annoying!
are you trying to charge from a PC or a wall outlet?
I usually charge via mains but it wasn't charging or even plugged in at the time this started happening. It was just sitting on the table by my bed. I even powered it off but it switched itself back on!
Here is how to fix it.
Take out the battery and take a plastic edge like credit card or even a regular tiny small screwdriver and push the pins (strip) inside the phone. I mean, to take the screw driver and push in the pins back inside the phone, in inside the usb charging port. your problem will disappear. make sure your plastic flexible after-market phone cover has a big enough hole at the bottom to allow you to connect a usb cable easily to the phone, or else, cut open a bigger hole on the cover.
Good luck
so here it is again: you have to push in the usb port pins back inside the phone, straight in without bending them. you can also buy a usb charging port from ebay for 22 bucks and change it yourself in 10 minutes. its a hardware problem so stop resetting your phone.
Nop bro i dont think so, cuz it happened same with me sometime after i bought galaxy note same thing happened with me too. I mean exactly same. Indeed. I remain convinced this is not hardware and is software related. The main reason for my thoughts there are that as well as the driving mode thing it seems that some piece of software is trying to load up as it asks me if I want to run whatever it is in either Clock or TuneIn Radio. Bizarre. Also, the first time it happened it was bang on 3am. Everytime I turned the phone off it would come back on exactly two minutes later.
The second night it started doing it bang on 1am.
I'm waiting to see what time it starts tonight.
It doesn't (so far) do it at all during the day.
Going to give it a couple of days to see what happens then go figure out how to go back to a factory ROM rather than the the Rocket 22 I have on here now.

I've been having the same problem for a few days now.
I've just pushed the pins in with the corner of my charging cables connector and the problem stopped.
There was also a notification that flashed up saying something like: USB connector or device removed.
Voice talk is still managing to launch itself, even after pushing the pins in. I'm on stock LB2 so maybe I've finally found a reason to flash a GB rom?
Happened to me yesterday. Got a toothbrush and cleaned usb port on phone. Now seems ok
