Fast USB C thumb drive for TWRP backup - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

This is my first phone without an sd card. Whereas I could previously make TWRP backups to the SD card, and it would survive when I format the data partition, but as that does not appear possible with this device, I need to back it up to an external USB thumb drive.
I am finding that this is significantly slower than backing up to the internal drive.
What is the fastest I can expect using a USB drive? Any recommendations?

I had 30 gigs and to do a full backup it was like 20 mins it was very slow vs a usb cable

The oneplus 6t's USB C port runs on USB 2 but has the type c connector So you will only get usb 2 speeds no matter the speed of the drive you connect it to.

Ok. Thank you.

You could try to install ftp server on your mobile then connect to it, speed depeds on your router wifi speed, i got around 50MB/s transfer.

Very slow transferring files to storage card

Transferring a 350mb avi to the storage card with the phone connected by mini usb takes about 14-15 minutes. This seems excessive. Is there any way to speed things up?
Shame that the sd micro card wasn't supplied with an adapter so I could just plug it in to my PC card reader.

Are you using ActiveSync connection? You should change the setting from that to making it a Disk Drive type connection.

[Q] Tab 10.1 with USB hub via USB adapter?

Hey,
Does anyone here have the USB adapter for their Samsung Tab 10.1? Can you connect a USB hub to it (maybe a powered USB hub)?
I take lots of full resolution photos, and would like to use the Tab to transfer data from SD card to portable USB hard drive.
What I want to avoid is having to first copy the SD card contents to the Tablet, then connect the tablet to the portable HD to unload the photos. That seems like unnecessary wear/tear on the flash memory.
If the USB host on the Tab 10.1 can handle a hub, then I can connect both the SD card and portable HD at the same time...hopefully the Tab would make use of it's RAM (the 1GB spec) to transfer chunks of data at a time, without resorting to using the internal Flash memory.
Am I right about that? The Android OS doesn't use the flash memory as a page file for working memory the way desktop computers do with drives?
bump - hoping someone can answer. Thanks.
There is a thread in development about a homemade usb adapter, and it works successfully with a hub. The samsung adapter isn't available yet, but should work the same

pokey9000 figured out how to force the unit in host mode. All you need to do is put 20ohms of resistance (easiest way with two 10Ohm resisters in series) between pins 13 and 15.
He also tested using a powered hub and was able to connect to multiple items at once. A regular hub might work for a few thing that are low powered but if you plan to have two hard drives, it better be powered.
has anyone found a usb to sd card adapter for multiple sd cards?
Did you ever figure this out? I want to do the same thing.

USB OTG Output current

Can anybody test the Note 3 with a USB OTG cable and external hard drives?
If you are rooted and using the app "Stickmount" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount, one should be able to mount a FAT32 partition to their phone.
If you don't want to format your hard drive to FAT32, then using the app "Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter would allow to mount another partition type.
It would be very interesting to find whether the Note 3 can provide enough power to external hard drives (portable hard drives with no included power supply) during the read and write processes.
Even though a USB 2.0 OTG cable is all that is available (to my knowledge), it would still be very useful to have the full 500mA available on the USB 2.0 portion of the Note 3 USB port.
Most smartphones have much less than 500mA on tap for the OTG connections.
I was able to connect a 500 mA (2.5" 5400 RPB SATA) from ADATA hard drive to the Note III!
Really unexpected. Connected the OTG connector first, then connected the drive to the female USB A port on the connector.
On my Note II it would try to spin up, squeal and spin down.

Awesome, good to hear. Have you tried large file writes and reads to and from the drive in order to see if it is able to complete a write operation? If it can handle writing a bunch of data without corruption, then it very well may have full 500mA output capability.
thanks for the report!
I was able to delete a file from a FAT32 formatted drive. No need to install anything extra. Even though there is a 4GB file size limit, FAT32 is unfortunately the only format everything can read without additional software.
Even windows can't read Ext3/4 without additional software - and the software isn't just click and install good to go.

Just wondering if anybody has any more info on the Note 3 output current? I hope it can power a Western Digital My Passport 2TB 3.0 as well as some DACs, such as the Musicstreamer II without providing insufficient power to those devices.
I went into a store and found that it will power a Western Digital 2tb my passport drive. It wouldn't read NTFS, so either root or exFAT may be required.
I confirm works well on my OTG usb 2.0 from S 2

[Q] Slow transfer speed

I thought the note 3 was going to be fast since it has usb 3.0 and all that?
I connected it to my front usb 3.0 port and it takes 8 and a half minutes to transfer a 2GB movie onto the sdcard which is a sandisk sdxc class 10 64GB stick while it takes 1-2 minutes when i connect it to my usb 3.0 card reader... how come it's so darn slow through the phone?
The motherboard im using is a Asus maximus VI hero
Is the phone in USB 3.0 MTP mode?
Also, the data is directed through phone motherboard, longer route means longer time (data transfer speed is also affected by the read/write capability of the SD slot on the phone).

Copy it onto the internal and you will notice how much faster it is. With usb 3 mode selected.

There should be some issue, either with your SD card or phone. Test copying same file into internal memory and then into card by usb 3.
I don’t have USB 3 in my PC and I always use 2.0 but transferring a 2GB video file by usb 2.0 never took over 2-3 minutes. By OTG cable from flash drive to sd card, same time. Even over wifi it doesn’t take that much time.
So try formatting the SD card and then input all data and test. I don’t think this will resolve, and you much check with Samsung service center.

After connecting the phone, did you set the phone to USB 3.0 mode?
MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) is the mode to transfer data between PC and phone.
When you connect the phone to USB, the phone is in USB 2.0 MTP mode. You have to pull down notification bar, open the USB notification and switch to USB 3.0.

[Q] OTG transfer speed very slow

Hi.
I bought a SATA to USB adapter in order to connect an internal HDD to my phone (I also have an OTG cable).
when using the adapter with my computer, I get around 40MB/s of transfer speed. It's very sufficient.
But using the same adapter with my phone, it takes 2 minutes to transfer a 150MB file to the phone, so the speed is a bit more than 1MB/s
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
I am using stock lollipop. I tried to mount the drive with both the internal mounting system and using the SlickMount app, with the same results.
The drive is a 160GB Samsung drive formatted to exFAT.
