A few weeks ago I started using official LOS 17.1 on my Redmi Note 7 (Lavender).
Everything works flawlessly, it is smooth, fast, great multitasking & gestures.
The only real problem I'm facing is the video recording quality is utter garbage. It looks 10 years older, blurry, lack of detail, weird arctifacts. Not only that, the focus is really slow, I can't record in 60fps, it doesn't look as smooth as it should and it does a flickering thing when focusing. I tried many versions of gcam, the stock Lineage Snap camera, Open Camera.
But even on 1080p30 it looks awful, here I give you a real world example between stock miui and los video. It's a frame capture taken by video editing software, so no quality loss from screenshot, etc. I know it's not the best example but you get the idea by trying to read the text on the box.

I haven't had the time to test another custom rom yet, but from what little I could find googling I'm not sure if it would help.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Fixed. It's indeed a problem with LineageOS. It doesn't include camera blobs so videos look bad. I am now using Pixel Experience without problems. See last post for comparison
Use anxcamera or a gcam mod.

as I already explained in the post the problem is present on any gcam version, only when recording video. It seems to be a problem with LineageOS not including blobs specific to the device and camera. I fixed it by installing Pixel Experience.
Here's an overall comparison:

Hi,
Have you taken pictures with another camera app than stock?

Stock camera
Seems the quality of the pics taken by the stock app is not as good as the other.
I've found that in the market they all have their pros and cons and that the differences are variable depending upon the circumstance, but the camera certainly isn't the feature to be bragged about on this phone. I've found that one of the ports of the Nexus 4 camera produces the best results most consistantly on my handset. I've also often wondered if my handset got the short end of the stick with the camera it has since a lot of other people are happy with the quality they get out of their RAZR HD, though I'm coming from a Galaxy S 2 which takes wonderful shots in comparison to some of the phones out now despite it now being an old phone model. Its the one thing I really miss about the S2.
On a tangent, I played around with a Galaxy S 4 today and did a bit of camera testing. Single shot stuff. I didn't find that it was all that much better than the S3 or S2 for taking single snapshots. The anti-shake setting worked but not quite as well as on the previous devices, for example. That was really all I could test though, since they always have great lighting when you're looking at phones. Quality is quality, but I'm not convinced 13 megapixels is better than 8 the way Samsung implemented 8 on the previous devices. To be fair though, I had it at 9.5 megapixels. 13 restricts you to a 4:3 shot.
I'll have to try out Camera MX now
thanks for the heads up, just tested it out and it does seem a little sharper, plus the FX options are pretty cool too

Are there any "hacks" for the stock cam in the build prop or media xml where one might tune a little parameters of e.g. jpg quality?
I now read about this app in a Phonearena article. Does anyone with a Nexus 5 want to try it ?
Just wanted to let you all know about this app.

Just tried it. It's alright. Not a lot of options in the camera itself. You have to go into the apps gallery to edit the photos, as well as export them into the main gallery of the device. Images look decent and capture seems quicker than stock.
Love it so far. A good amount of filters and plenty of tweaks. Played with it for a couple minutes at the bar last night and was satisfied with what I got: http://imgur.com/ml4deJx
It's a pretty nice app. The design has a slight learning curve as it's not quite holo and the back button behavior needs to be fixed. But the filters are excellent. They are much less destructive than the ones you see in instragram et al. VSCO has a very good reputation making pro level Lightroom presets which emulate specific film types.
Where is the zoom??? I didn't play w/ it much before I uninstalled, but I'll be damned if I could figure out how to zoom. I've tried a few cam apps so far, but still like stock better than this one........JMO.

Just crop the photo after shooting. That is all digital zoom does anyway.
Anybody else have the problem where after you export an image to the gallery, the gallery crashes until you delete the image via a file browser?
I dont get similar quality as with stock cam. Its worse compared to it. Am i doing something wrong?

Nice... Could you do the same test but with night shots?
Thanksss!!

Thanks , can you add XCam too.
woow! Google camera is well optimized, camera fv5 is good too...but to have a better comparison of course need to have the LG Camera of stock firmware, i know you dont have it but for people who are in stock with stock camera app isnt fair to do this comparison!
one last question, im on stock, as everyone know the original camera dont have advanced controls like ISO, brightness, ambient light, so, which of this 4 cameras have those functions? because i didnt install them, and i feel my stock camera is taking photos with so much noise i dont know why!
thanks

Hey guys I Just moved back to cloudy 1.2 (Personal favorite) and I have been busy this couple of days, so maybe this weekend I will take the pictures with those cameras stock and xcam again and maybe with an object that has more color so we can check the saturation and low light pictures too.
You should use this mod, V1 to be exact, located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/themes-apps/optimized-lg-g3-camera-mod-lollipop-t3009111 and then install this camera, lenovo super camera, located here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665714 and try a comparison image. I am anxious to see, because just from my use and viewing I see a major increase in quality with this mod anc camera. I have been using it from the beginning on LG G3 with CM or AOSP based ROMs.

A list of Gcam mods, so far I have been testing the latest Arnova release and it doesn't work most reliably, sometimes camera has stopped, UHD video is jerky, slow mo 120fps works but lags and 240fps slow mo doesn't work at all.
This is all on latest Lineage 15.1 build and universal bootstack with A2017U.
Be interested if anyone has tried any other versions and has a good working combination? especially with v5.2 or v5.1 of Gcam.

Works best for me. Slow motion crashes, other than that everything works perfectly

Is there a gcam that works with stock Android 7.1?
2019
It seems like it's been a while since this thread has gotten updated, so I was wondering has anyone found newer versions or workarounds for any of the problems (like jerky slow-mo) on gcam?

Unfortunately, newer gcam 6.2.024 and 6.2.030 only work on android pie. (Not sure for pie custom rom)
Only gcam 6.1.021 is working on oreo firmware and front camera has green tint.

Wasn't there a fix for the green tint? Or was that for 5.x versions only?

There is an option in the gcam's settings:
"Remove green tint from front camera"
