So basically, I got a S10+ SM-G975U Snapdragon in March and had it until October, when it cracked and the screen broke. However, the phone still functioned but didn't respond to touch, so with the help of a USB-C dongle, an HDMI cable and some screen display apps, I got the phone to work while being displayed on apps like Vysor through enabled debugging. Unfortunately, instead of seeing the information I would transfer to the new phone, I saw a phone that was factory-reset, devastated by the loss of all of my photos, apps, contacts and other materials of mine. This was likely due to my early attempts of trying to get into the phone and enabling USB Debugging. I then tried restoring backups, but apparently there were none. No Verizon Cloud, Drive, or System backups yielded any of my information. However, I did find out that information could be recovered through certain software, but to do so would require a root. But my search fell short, yielding limited results on what to do, so I came here to ask which resources, or just anything in general could I use to root and/or restore materials when backups proved futile. I have to return this phone to Asurion soon, so answers would be best as soon as possible. Thanks for reading.

Can't discus it on here. The only way is a single paid solution that xda does not endorse. They won't let any of us give links or anything to the group that does the bootloader unlock. So you need to ask them how to do it since they are blocking the only way
Also when rooting the device is wiped the information will more than likely be overwritten. And lost forever. The methods that say they need root. Normally require to be rooted beforehand as the only root method is to unlock the bootloader which again wipes the device

the only way to root this device is to unlock the bootloader. Starting with the s10 series and up the us model bootloader's can be unlocked. But the only people that can unlock the bootloader mist charge for it as it's not free to them either. Unlocking the bootloader is the only way to gain root access now there is no other known exploits
I mean like is there a thread/specific software I can use? Something I could be linked to?

Read the first part real well. You should find the direction you need
People keep asking for this. I have seen a number of threads with questions on it. Why won't XDA at least allow us to discuss it? I know promoting a paid service is against rules or something, but why can't we talk about it?
Well I found this:
I rooted my US Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and here's what I'm doing with it
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has every feature you can think of already and costs $1,299, but I bootloader unlocked and rooted it anyway.

Not only that, but most of these ROM's come with ZERO instructions on how to install them properly. If you have a verizon S5, (SM-G900V) then you can only flash a rom, made by the devs here, for the 900V. If you try to flash a variants S5 rom, your phone will brick.
I always recommend that before somone flashes anything to their phone or tablet to do research on the subject. Read, and reread everything. Double check. Make sure you have everything you need.
Also, pretty much all of the devs have install instructions for their work in our phones dev section.

As of now, you can only use safestrap. Any of the current ROMs can be flashed by our current safestrap

No offense meant, but based on the questions you've asked I suggest you do more research before flashing anything on your phone.
The ROMs listed in this forum have pretty good install instruction for anyone who has a basic knowledge of what they are doing (err go the comment about doing more research).
Did you make a backup before you flashed the ROM you can't even remember the name of? What slot did you flash the ROM to?
It would be helpful if you could tell us what ROM you tried to flash and where you found it.
Always make a backup of your stock rom before flashing anything.
Thanks

I guess what i meant to say is that some information is just hard to locate. They keep the fancy art easy to see but the installation instructions you actually have to search for. I love the DEV's for there work, TRUST ME. Android wouldn't be Android without you guys.
I would like to get more involved in the XDA and AndroidForums to make a one stop shop for ALL of the popular devices. Basically, just gather up all pertinent information (after receiving permission from the dev) and put it in one nice and easy spot to read.

Yes. That is an excellent example of what i am wanting to do and I actually used it when i started reading up on my S5.The only thing is that it does not specify the Verizon 900V. So someone with any model phone could read that and brick their phone.
But i will want to go in to more detail such as exactly what the "NE9" is.. Is it an update? Firmware? What?
Regardless, i just want to add another page that has information that one that already exists, such as that one, may be missing.
There is WAY too much information about our phones to say that one page covers every single aspect of it.
I'm just wanting to help clearly state the information thats already out there. Alot of these people are already busy and cannot give 110% towards there pages.

I think we both know that one carriers phone could have compatible root/roms for others carrier's phones. Specifying the model name i would think would be the most appropriate way. You have to realize not everyone has been doing this for as long as you and does not necessarily have a keen eye for such things..
There is absolutely nothing wrong with over explaining things.
With that being said, i do believe that post is an extremely helpful page.
But discussing whether or not the page has enough information is not worth debating over.
When i find time to do my own then we can have this discussion.
I mentioned i wasn't exactly sure how i boot looped my. Still don't because I can't remember for the life of me which ROM it was! I thought i book marked it... Whichever one it was, it wanted me to flash 3-4 different zips once in SafeStrap. First ZIP is when the boot loop occuured.
ANYWAY...
I installed SafeStrap using the instructions found HERE.
I wanted to install THIS ONE because it had the KTweaker which is totally awesome toplay with but i dont think my 900-V allows sit.\\
BUT:
I want as many people's opinion as possible on this (I will create a separate thread). I have T-Mobile but was old a Verizon Phone. I have issues with dropped calls, slow speeds, among others. I want to know if this is legal.
Any and all are welcome to respond as i feel they should pay for making me pay $60 fora cab (Oneway) and then selling me a crap phone. Plus the wall charger didn't work. The data cable did so at least i had another wall charger.
In Case your Wondering... yes i do have the receipt.
THE BEST PART IS: T-Mobile said they've never heard of them when i called and gave them the address off of the receipt.
Honestly, i would like to go in there and walk out with another S5, maybe even with this one paid off, lol. But PLEASE ALL OPINIONS ARE WELCOME.

You need to seriously stop and do a lot more reading before you try anything else with your phone. The ROM you linked above that you said you want to flash is for the International version of the Galaxy S5 and will hard brick your phone. The forum where that ROM is posted (Samsung Galaxy S5) is for the International version. The US variants of the S5 are broken down by carrier. Hence this is the Verizon Galaxy S5 forum. You bought your phone from some fly-by-night place, and it turned out to be a Verizon variant when you needed a T-Mobile variant.
If you are going to keep the Verizon variant you bought and use it on T-Mobile, you will only get Edge speeds through T-Mobile and never get 4G speeds. It is legal to use a Verizon phone on T-Mobile's network, it just won't work as well as you have already experienced. You need to change the APNs on your phone to get the best performance you can on T-Mobile. But it's still not going to be as good as using the T-Mobile variant on the T-Mobile network. If you went into that store and specifically asked for a T-Mobile Galaxy S5 and they sold you a Verizon variant, they would have a problem. If you went into the store and simply bought the cheapest S5 they had without telling them you needed a T-Mobile variant, then that is completely legal on their part. You don't need to create a separate thread to get everyone's opinions on the legality of your purchase. What I said above pretty much sums it up.
Also, if you are planning on keeping the Verizon variant and want to flash a ROM through safestrap, the ROM you want to flash has to be of the same build as the current build on your phone. So if your S5 is on NHA, you should only flash an NHA based ROM in safestrap. Or if you phone is on NI2, an NI2 based ROM. So letting everyone know which build your phone currently has will help us let you know which ROMs are safe to flash on your phone.
Sorry if all of this comes across as harsh, but I'm trying to help prevent you from turning your phone into a useless paperweight. You seem very confused by a lot of the information found here in the forums, and that is a very good time to slow down, take your time, and make sure you understand what you are doing at every step.

ALL of this information can be confusing and I doubt anyway one will deny that fact. The MAIN point is that i know how to fix it, right? This is why I eventually want to make a straight-forward thread about how to do things to which phone properly.
People learn from their mistakes.
I have been learning more and more as i go along but the fact i have T-Mobile service but a Verizon phone just added to the confusion.
Secondly i went in to a T-Mobile Store, so of course i wanted a T-Mobile phone, not a Verizon one. See, everyone makes stupid mistakes and misinterprets things

I didn't make a stupid mistake and misinterpret anything. Please show me where in your previous posts you wrote you went to a T-Mobile store. OK Your right, i didn't meantion it. You feel like your testosterone levels have increase now? Jesus.
From the moment you've replied to my posts you've had an attitude that is barely detectable.
Thanks for your help but you need to get out more and learn some people skills, dude. ****.
Look dude, we get it. You went and bought a new toy and couldnt wait to play with it. We're all guilty of that at some point. But blaming your mistakes on someone else, like when you blame the devs for not being straight forward with their roms, although with every example you have given here they really have been, all you need to do is read their posts, you'll get what your getting now. The only one you have to blame here is yourself. For not researching what you have first and just jumping into flashing a rom that was not developed for the phone you actually have. We tried to help you out and point you in the right direction but you decided to be the one with the attitude. Not landshark or my self. I think before you shell out advice on leaening people skills to someone else, you might want to practice what you preach first.

Hi figured we could use our own separate thread to discuss the killswitch Nvidia supposedly put in place on our old Shield tablets and see what has worked for those who have received their replacement units. If you've gotten a replacement please share if your old unit has been destroyed or not...if not please let others know what the old tablet has on it or what you did to attempt to prevent the brick! Thanks for helping us all out here!
As I said in the other thread, I received my new one, and my old one is still usable on rooted latest stock, unlocked bootloader, with the only app missing being Chrome for some reason. Nothing else disabled or uninstalled. Maybe they haven't turned on the server that sends the kill signal yet.
If the company wants the other device back (dunno if that is true), why keep it? You are breaking a deal while making it less appeling for companies to do this type of thing...+its a saftey risk for you and others around you.
Nvidia said they do not need it back
ManualG on the Nvidia forum said they are not requiring you send it back
"We don't require you to send it back to us to receive the replacement and are collecting them only to make it less of a burden on everyone else who dont have drop off locations like that close by." So you can keep it if you want ?
16 gig tablet, got it this morning. My original is still functional, it was stock rom, rooted with xposed on it. That's as much modding as I've done with mine.
does anyone have more informations about this killswitch?
Is it a service that needs to be deactivated or deleted or a kernel feature?
I just want to make sure it doesn't kill my old tablet when I set up the new one.
Alternatively, I could just flash an older factory image or custom firmware.
From what I've read on other forums (i.e. reddit) most have indicated that the killswitch is embedded in the bootloader and will activated on the defective tablet once the replacement tablet is registered on the nvidia side. I of course cannot confirm for this to be the case but just sharing what others have reported.
yea but it must communicate with the server then and that only works when Android is booted up and all communication drivers loaded.
So there must be another service running in Android that gives this information to the bootloader to kill itself.
If it's bootloader based, flash a bootloader from one of the older recovery images.
Will try that. BL from Update 2.2.2 should be fine?
actually if I flash it back to 2.2.2 it should be fine too since the changes to 3.X aren't that big
That should work just fine.
big time noob question but where are you getting the old bootloaders from to flash?
Until somebody's tablet gets deactivated and a log is captured during the deactivation process, everything said here or anywhere else is just speculation.
bluegizmo83 is right, however the discussion has to start somewhere so kudos to the OP for getting this thread started.

Oh I completely agree. I'm all for conversion. But I don't want people to get the wrong impression, like trying to flash an older bootloader. That may stop the deactivation, but it also may not. Its only speculation at this point.

Well said. I apologize if my post came through as a solution. I was only mentioning that as folks had mentioned a possible bootloader lock.
Any thoughts on whether flashing CM would serve as a way to circumvent the killswitch? I see that release for this tablet is already available http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...-cyanogenmod-12-shield-tablet-lte-na-t3055043. Thoughts?

No problem. As I said, I'm all for the discussion, I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that its all just speculation at this point.
I think the old bootloaders are in the old full OTA's someone correct me if I'm wrong. You can also extract them from the full OTA

To me, this is the most logical place to start at this point! Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing a custom rom seem like a good starting place. If the stock devices are definitely getting wiped anyways, any changes we make now can't hurt the chances of keeping it alive!
I have a Galaxy S7 (non edge) on AT&T. I enabled developer options. I notice in developer options, I have an option for OEM unlock. When I goggle what that option is for, it is to allow to unlock the bootloader. I found a command "fastboot oem unlock" I am trying to unlock the bootloader. But when running the command, I just get <waiting for device.> I am not 100% sure I am in the right mode to accept the command. If I type fastboot devices, I get nothing. I just found the command to do "adb reboot bootloader." It just reboots to the downloading screen. But typing fastboot devices still shows nothing. Any clue what I'm doing wrong here?
AT&T has a locked Bootloader and no root method as of now. It may never. Read around some and you can get more information about it.
I've read many articles say it has a locked bootloader and may never be unlocked. But, then I found this option for oem unlock and Googled it and figure if the option is there, there must be a way to unlock it
None of the carrier variants of the s7 and s7 edge will ever be rooted IMO. I've had the note edge, s6 edge+, and now S7 edge all on At&t none of them ever seen permanent root for as far as I know. I believe my last AT&T phone to get root was my G3
I am figuring out ways around the features I would like root for. It would be nice to have root, but I'll admit with root I tinker with my phone more and it would probably be better if I'm forced to not have it.
What is the oem unlock option for if it's not to unlock the bootloader?

It does absolutely nothing.
No troll. It really does nothing.
Is it possible to give a temporary root so that phone stays rooted until rebooted? I wouldn't mind rooting it after each reboot.

I've never had an android that I didn't root since the HTC Eris back in the day. But frankly, I'm enjoying this S7 without root, I can theme, I can use Package Disabler Pro, All in one gestures, etc, etc,. So , I'm quite happy without root this time.
Probably won't get one if you have an AT&T model. Starting with my G4 and G5 however I've found that the custom ROM's aren't nearly as necessary for an excellent overall experience. I'm assuming when we get our S7E it will be about the same. Disable the bloat, add a preferred launcher and a patched google dailer and really they perform quite well. The only thing that's a big bummer is not being able to remove the bloatware. I just don't understand duplicate applications especially when those said applications are almost always inferior.
I'm not interested in custom ROMs. I tried a few Cynogenmod ROMs on my last phone and all of them were buggy. I am perfectly happy with the stock ROM on the S7. I am fully aware I can change launchers to many different ones without any root. There are a few root apps I wouldn't mind having. One, I don't pay for a lot of data. So, I had a toggle switch right on my home screen where I could enable/disable mobile data without going into menus to dig down to it. Without root, there is no way to do that. Second, I liked using Juice Defender to make my battery last much longer. There is the powersaving feature built into the stock rom, but I don't think it's as good as Juice Defender.
I guess the most major reason I rooted my last phone was because it only had 4 GB of internal memory so I used Link 2 SD to link all of my apps as well as a lot of system apps to the SD card which made the 4 GB almost doable. But with this phone having 30 GB internal, I am not having that problem and don't have a need to move stuff to SD card. Although if I end up adding one (because there is the hidden SD card slot), I might want root in the future to allow me to link to SD rather than moving so things work a little more smoothly.

Wrong. I believe they eventually got root (but not unlocked bootloaders) for the GS5, GS6. The GS4 I *personally* know had root because I had root on that phone even with the update which fully locked down the bootloader. They even had safestrap for custom roms for that. Check the forums for previous AT&T samsung galaxys.
I feel bad for the T-Mobile people but we also have them on our side for this one, since EVERY US GS7 variant is locked down pretty tight. I think we can eventually at least get root. Itll be a struggle. Keep checkin the forums.

Until then, you can use Helium for backing up apps & data (not everything though, and need a computer to enable it). One annoying app that I especially liked to backup was the Authenticator app. Luckily there is a workaround to enable authenticator on more than one device... (involves finding your secret key, and/or saving a screenshot of the barcodes for the setup).
Tether works fine without root (used to need root to enable this one)
The big one I miss is the adblocker thing and TiBu being able to remove bloatware, freeze apps, and backup and restore absolutely anything.
Does anyone know the status of someone finding a root method? is there some guy out there that knows how to do it on some really convoluted way or is that guy keep banging his head against the wall because every thing he tries is a dead end?

I had a note 3. There was a root, for a time. Although, no bootloader unlock. One was bootstrapping method that, if I recall correctly, required one to have the original system intact while allowing the user to select the rooted image on boot. The other was to use a .exe from a company in China. The application also sent your IMEI to said company. Both options, not so good.

I had root on my AT&T GS5. Was the bull**** bootstrap root without being able to flash kernels. But it still let me use many features I wanted
Just had an epiphany, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had it. After walking through Costco tonight and intending to walk out with a new S7 to replace my S4, I came out empty handed but with a different outlook. According to the cell phone rep, the major carriers no longer offer subsidized pricing for phones, which means you are paying full price for the phone over the life of the contract term. So you're paying almost $700 for an AT&T model of the S7, why not then just pay full price for the unlocked international version of the phone? The main reason to avoid unlocked phones in the past was because of the price difference, however the price difference is now gone.
Makes sense to me now that I like most people want a phone that can be rooted and free of bloat, have a new choice since the price is the same in the end.

The difference is that you can pay a small monthly payment with no interest through your carrier and you have to pay full price up front with the international version. That makes a massive difference for most people.

be honest I had an s4 before this and rooted it easily. I just assumed that all galaxys were easily rooted. didn't think twice. was surprised to find the s7 locked. be honest, the phone does work about perfect without root. just a few things I miss... I miss having apps auto move to the SD card. I like linking them instead of moving them. I don't "debloat" it. every time I've tried that, I end up getting weird dependency errors and crashes. learned my lesson. would like Aesop to just have a fully "debloated" phone. but not on the top of my list. one annoyance is I try to save data so I like to easily flip mobile data on and off from the home screen. no way to do that without root. it's just a shortcut to the toggle rather than toggling it directly. none of it is super pressing, but things I would just like.

Hey all.
My understanding is that it will be quite some time, if at all, that we get a full on TWRP recovery for this phone. My question is, does it seem likely that at some point we will at least be able to obtain root while still on the stock ROM? I think it's called systemless root?
The other question is, anyone think there might be a a way, either through apk or something requiring said root, that could get the notification icons in the second display to "pulsate" and simulate a LED? That was something I was just curious about.
Loving the phone otherwise, fantastic device.
Thanks!
You questions are tied together. TWRP may or may never come. The problem of a locked bootloader. Given the fairly high traffic, thx Samsung Note 7 firebomb scandal, things are looking more up than they might have. But there's no telling.

But are they? Because I thought getting root and flashing TWRP were two different things. Can't one obtain root without needing to flash a recovery.img ?

They're different...but....They're tied a bit due to it being a development problem, needing people applying brainpower and being hard-headed enough to beat it.
The number of safeties in place by LG to prevent this is huge, but hopefully one or both can happen. Google too has been adding safety after safety to stop exploits root and otherwise....there was a story on a blog about a guy's quest to root and then put Debian on a recent Asus tablet....it was a soap opera story that was probably 10,000 words long. In the end he needed an oscilloscope, electronics breadboard, and a ton of input from electronics guys online.. I'll see if I can find it, it is a fun and frustrating insider's post on how these things sometimes happen. It was originally linked on the r/Android subreddit, but the devs nuked it because it was "too technical" for that audience.

So I just discovered I can't uninstall the Facebook app which thoroughly pissed me off. If it's not system critical then I think I aught to be able to uninstall it. Especially with all the news about Facebook scraping phone messages and what not without permission.
So mostly I'm pretty happy with the phone. Still annoyed Google includes pointless uninstallable apps I'm never going to use. For the most part I just disable those and move on. With Facebook, I want it gone.
I'm happy to unroot my device when done or leave it rooted. I've never actually rooted a phone before and the closest I can say I've come is I've jailbroken an old ipod touch before.
So if someone could point me in the right direction to help me remove this blasted Facebook app then I'd be mighty happy about that.
Thanks

You should just be able to disable it without the need for root via the apps menu. If that fails, there's this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler or another app callled Package Disabler Pro which should do the job.
I've also read about an app called Adhell which will work too.

Post above me is right, just for disabling/uninstalling Facebook, it might be overkill to root.
You have to know: There are different variants of the galaxy s8, based on the geographic location of where you bought it.
The international/european version is "easy" to root, while it's not possible to root an american Galaxy s8. There also is the fact that you void your warranty rooting, if you're outside of the EU ( see this)
So rethink your decission and if you still want to root, we can than show you a guide on how to

I have an international version, Australia to be exact. Yeah I knew that rooting voided the warranty. That said, the Australian Consumer Law is NOT voided despite me rooting the device so I may or may not have protection on that front depending on the issue.
I'd still like to know how to root my device. But thank you for raising those relevant points.

In order to root you flash a custom Recovery (TWRP in our case) via Odin on PC (Samsungs flash tool). You than boot up into that recovery and flash either Magisk or SuperSu.

Pretty sure google's AOSP doesn't have this. This is a Samsung decision, not Google.
