My Samsung S5 (SM-G900F, 4.4) device has a fingerprint scanner to unlock the screen. It was working perfectly, but now it only asks for the alternative password, but I forgot it. I tried on the Google webpage to lock my phone, I hoped that the password given there will be overwrite the alternative password on the phone, but it said, that it found the phone already locked, so no need to use the password. I don't want to do a factory reset if it possible, how could I get the fingerprint scanner to be an option again, or somehow unlock the screen and use my phone?
This happened to me today in the morning on my S5 mini with stock OS. At first I typed in the correct alternative password, but it was not recognized. Latter I successfully (?) changed password with "Lock" option on Android Device Manager, and it didn't help either...
At the end I did a factory reset and lost all my data
Is this a common bug? Should we report it somewhere or something?
After too many failed fingerprint attempts, it will only ask for the password
Maybe someone else has been trying to access your phone
Factory reset to regain access if you don't know your alternative password (Probably a good idea to write that down)

Yes, you are correct. I tested this again, and I think that, in the morning, I really used wrong password . And the first time I didn't notice the displayed info, about password already being set, on Android Device Manager site, when I tried to change the password.
Thanks for the replay
Dear All,
First of all, allow me to wish you Happy New Year 2018. Hopefully 2018 will be a good year for all of us.
Anyway I need your kind help regarding my Samsung Galaxy S4 Value Edition GT-I9515 (LRX22C.I9515XXU1BQD2) All default settings, no rooting, USB debugging off.
Yesterday I mistakenly set 6 digits of PIN CODE to it. After restart, the PIN CODE was deemed to be INCORRECT and I could not access the phone.
Unfortunately I did not turn on both DATA and WIFI so I could not recover it from google or Samsung websites.
I visited the authorized service centre in town, and they could not help due to this model is not available for my country.
The available access now are on sim card and external memory card.
I still have some data in the phone that I need to recover, so factory reset might be at the last priority in recovering this phone.
Would you please let me know how to access my phone again? Please help me, thank you!
You can try to flash TWRP Recovery, and from there you need to go to /Data/System and delete two files, called "gatekeeper.password.key" and "gatekeeper.pattern.key" then reboot your Device and your Phone should be unlocked, if not then entering any random Pin number should unlock it.
Hope this will help you
Thank you very much for your help, Fatal_Scythe. Let me try to find the neccessary resources and perform the procedure
Fatal_Scythe, problem solved
Hi Fatal_Scythe,
Thank you very much again for your valuable advice!!! Yes I have just successfully unlocked the lock screen of my phone around a couple of hours ago!!
As per your recommendation, I downloaded ODIN & TWRP for GT-I9515. Because I am really new with this, I installed TWRP Recovery as per guide from theandroidsoul.com. For steps to remove PIN, I got that from .howtogeek.com.
In File Manager of TWRP, I went to /data/system folder. Only 3 files named locksettings were found and deleted:
locksettings.db
locksettings.db-shm
locksettings.db-wa1
Finally I restarted the system and all things are back to normal, no more PIN request.
I hope my short explanation above may be useful for those who encounters the same problem as mine. There is no need to reflash or format/hard-reset the phone. All data is retained. Thank you for your enlightement :good::good::good::good::good:

Hi, Nice to hear that. Glad I was able to help you
Hello.
I have a serious problem.
tl;dr:
I forgot my pattern lock combination and I need my messages so I don't want to factory reset. Is there any other way?
Long story:
So I've forgotten my pattern lock combination and I have a job interview tomorrow at the address I received in a message.
I can't unlock my phone. I didn't write down the address anywhere else. And if I try to factory reset my phone it will get rid of all my messages.
So far I've tried:
dr.phonw - but for some reason it doesn't work on p9 lite
I've read online you can delete the password file for the pattern lock and it will unlock, I've tried using usb cable to access my files but I can't access the phone while it's locked.
I've tried installing a file manager from a sd card in recovery mode, but p9 lite doesn't have that function.
Do you have any other ideas I could try.
It might seem like a strange question, but I'm really panicking right now, the job interview is tomorrow and it's really important to me.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is there anyway to bypass this? i dont need any of the info that is in it, just wanted to install a custom rom.

Why not simply ask the person that gave it to you for the password?
I dont have contact with him
Well in that case I doubt you'll get any help here since none of us knows if you were actually given the device or if you aquired it through other ways
