This new google maps update is destroying my battery. Is there any way to revert back to the last update, but not get rid of all the updates? ><
Anyone else notice this? I havent even opened the maps app and its taken 36% of my battery versus everything else on my phone. More than the display even.
I noticed this too. My phone was getting very hot and the battery was draining quickly. When I took a look at the battery usage info, it said that google maps had used something close to 40% of the battery. Maybe it has something to do with Latitude? I'm going to make sure I'm logged out to see if that makes a difference.
Also, looks like this isn't just limited to the shift.

As far as what others are saying, it isnt related to lattitude, at least as far as making sure you are logged out.
People have logged out supposedly and have the same problem. It makes no sense as I have always been logged into lattitude and never ran into this problem in older versions.
This probably does the opposite of help you but I installed the update the day it came out and haven't had any issues. It pops up in ATK every now and then (I just use it to watch things my phone seems to run way better when I'm not killing apps all the time) but it hasn't even showed up in my battery usage unless I use it for something of course. Even then, I've seen nowhere close to the battery usage you guys are seeing.
You'll just have to kill it on reboot, or after you open maps. It's ridiculous.

That doesn't help, seems to just restart.
Sent from my EVO Shift using the XDA App
To put it into other terms . I unplugged phone and played angry birds for 15 min. 12% was used by angry birds and maps used 10% the rest was mostly display.
Sent from my EVO Shift using the XDA App
Just went into class with a 95% charge, 2 hours later when class was over my charge was 45%..... Google maps was the majority of that. Tell me that is screwed up. :'(

That is weird. My phone has been unplugged 21 hours and doesn't even register google maps in the battery status. Maps is updated for me as well.
I hope this gets figured out for you guys, I tried to make it happen on my phone today but I've been unplugged for over 18 hours and still have 47% remaining with maps showing in ATK all day.
It doesn't show up in my battery usage either.

Haven't noticed my battery dieing any faster, but google maps seems to want to always run. its starting to get very annoying that every 10 minutes i have to kill it again. why won't it die and stay dead till i run the program. I've even tried using several auto killers and "startup preventivers" with no luck. and whats worse, sometimes i'll end up with 3 or 4 copies of google maps running at once. what the hell is going on?
Hello,
I'm running Jelly Bean. Most apps are fine. I have the odd lagg if more than 2 or 3 are open but they are normal.
However, I have a consistent lagg no matter how many other apps are running if I click Google Search.
It seems as though the lagg is from loading the cards from Google Now. Does anyone have a method of speeding this up? it's painful. It takes sometimes over 3 seconds to load google search and then the cards pop up. Very slow indeed. Everything else is perfect.
Not convinced about the battery life at the moment but I'm working on it
Yeah I seem to have the same problem. For now I have just uninstalled updates for Google Search and then disabled it in the app manager because it was sucking 30% of my battery. It seems it isn't completely ready yet.
You are talking about Google Now I suppose. Yeah that's a battery and ram eater. You should try what Kingo64 said if it's such a pain in the ass. I'm on CM10 and running fine here.
Interesting, so it could be Google Now that is sucking my battery life. I've just flashed Semaphore because I was getting incredibly poor battery life and was told that devil was probably the reason. Ill keep that in mind. I'll see how Semaphore goes then if that's **** too, I might disable Google Now. Alternatively it's back to GB, I don't mind having poor battery life but this was insane. I was getting only a few hours out of my battery.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I'm really trying to nip this wakelock issue in the bud, and I'm getting REALLY frustrated. I was seeing google services take up more resources than even the display, so I've turned off all location services and Google Now, and the Google services resource hogging went down.
Now I'm seeing high "keep awake" times in GSAM from the Kernel itself. I guess my battery drain isn't *that* bad (about 1.5% per hour) and that's with 1 hour of screen on time...but what's the deal with the wakelocks?! I'm assuming "keep awake" isn't counting the screen on time, right? 1 hour 32 minutes of keep awake seems excessive to me in only 13 hours time.
Can someone please tell me if this is normal for the Kernel? If it's not location services I don't know what else it could be.
TIA!!
p.s. What happened to the upload image option??

You really need to stop over thinking your devices and use them. You did the same thing for the last 2 years with your Nexus.

Hey man I remember you from the AOKP gnex forum. Did you pick up the N3 too? You're 100% correct...I really have no idea why I'm always *so* obsessed over battery life/drain. It's like an OCD that itches and compels me to have my devices run as efficiently as humanly possible. It's a crappy obsession too, because it's gonna be a VERY long time before any device is even near perfect.
You would think I'd be enjoying this insane battery life as compared to what I used to get on the gnex. I'm getting well over a full day and sometimes over 8 hours screen on time, but no, I'm obsessing all over again. To my credit I do think my gnex did really have some issues though - I couldn't even get close to getting through the day without having to recharge, and I had the extended 2100 mAh battery. I was having to charge that damn phone like every 8 hours with minimal usage.
I seriously thank you for making me wake up and smell the roses. I'm just gonna enjoy this beautiful phone. And for the first time in a very long time I have absolutely no desire to throw a ROM on my device!! I think that speaks to how great the phone is.
Hey, yup that's me. I actually grabbed a Note 3 in the Amazon screw up and will have it in hand tonight. I appreciate you not taking my statement as a personal shot and exactly how I intended it. There will always be something you can find wrong in a device if you're looking for it. And yes, the Gnex sucked

Yeah man, I may be complaining a little bit about it, but make no mistake, you're gonna be blown away by this phone. 8 hours of screen on time? That's just insane. The s-pen is amazing with all its features and handwriting recognition, pen window, etc... I'm in love with it. And I have a good amount of features turned on that aren't hurting the battery life at all. Not to mention, as expected the phone is faaaaast. It's kind of amazing how much of a step up it is from the gnex. :good:
And yeah thanks again, I needed someone to snap me out of it and realize EXACTLY what you said - I need to just enjoy using this beautiful phone and stop trying to pick it apart. Sites like this especially are also a bad influence - it's ridden with OCD modders/flashers/tinkerers. It's all good though, I'm very happy and I'm not even gonna update or root the phone...it's not even necessary.

I politely disagree with overthinking the phone. IMO, it's supposed to be an endless expansion of a playground for you to make the device yours and I always find myself tinkering. It has paid off through knowledge gained along with simple fun and pride for the awesome state my phone is in now.
For the battery life issue, I would recommend first installing Wakelock Detector and open it, select the top icon to toggle to "wakeup triggers". Keep in mind that BetterBatteryStats works fine as well. Wakeup triggers are nice because they'll tell you a number of times that a certain app waked your device when it tries to sleep.
I see it like "how dare google services wake MY device when i don't use google talk and/or have sync turned off" How to fix the certain wakelock will be my next post after you report back more detailed info on it if you'd like
I've fixed this issue. I cleared the main cache from settings...storage, then rebooted. Now instead of .5 - 1%/hr drain, I just got 6 hours of nice deep sleep with ONE percent drain.
THIS is what deep sleep should look like. and everything I had turned on before was still enabled the whole time...wifi, bt, smart stay, etc.
Android system process: stay awake time 2 minutes! Success!

Do you mind sharing what you've done to get to this point? (Besides just in relation to Google Services...)

Hey, np. I froze a lot of apps, including all Samsung and all Verizon apps. Then I turned off all location services. I'm mostly on WiFi all day and don't really need location services, so I just turn them on before a trip when I know I'll need the gps/nav.

Ok, nothing new then. I was expecting more intense measures for some reason.
Thanks though.
My battery is dropping more than it should when the screen is off. Android System seems to be using a fair amount, between 16-21% on average. Can't anyone tell me what 'Light' is under sensors? It's giving a very high reading for Android System. As is the Accelerometer in Google Play Services. Why would Google Play Services be using the Accelerometer?

Recently my battery is very bad and I try many Roms, They all I get 3 hours screen battery.
I have root and used Greenify.
I actually came to xda to see if anyone else was having problems. My wife and I have noticed huge battery drains the past few days. Honestly have no clue what it was. She noticed her google now launcher now has a white background when viewing "all apps".
Our phones are not rooted and are stock.
Help?
Probably Google Play service related. I have had bad battery life on pretty much all roms, and in power settings it always says G+, google services, youtube or something else is using most of the power.
