So, after having the tab for a day and a half, was getting twitchy on making phone calls.
I want that Phone icon on the screen!
So, after rooting (uber easy actually, z4root works a treat), got adbWireless to enable me to connect and got a shell.
Bit of juggling, mounting the /system and pushing in the Phone.apk's.
I've tried a whole bunch of Phone.apk's from anywhere I can find them basically, and still no joy as of yet.
In fact, getting a few errors now in a few places (PhoneInfo and TabletInformation errors).
Makes sense it's not trivial as we'd have seen something already probably.
And don't know if it's the phone.apk or the radio being used that's set to block.
How's everyone else getting on?
Thanks a lot for posting... I am anxious to see if we can do this... a friend of mine thought this would be a simple "install the phone apk" but we found that didn't work on Wednesday.
The only other one I've seen who's trying (publicly maybe?) is jdmadonna who posted his results over in the Tab Themes and Apps forum today that he rooted with z4root, then installed the phone.apk as you did, then the Tab started vibrating every few seconds and showed the message android phone has stopped working. When he rebooted, everything locked up apparently... he said he lost the network provider and baseband and could not bring them back, so he returned the tab. He had been looking for the Euro phone.apk, so I'm not sure if that's what he used here...
Guess it will not be as easy as we had hoped.... hopefully this nut can be cracked somehow.
Adding insult to injury is the Samsung T-Mobile user manual for the Tab which refers to it as a phone throughout! However, the pretty much useless pamphlet that T-Mo provides call it a "device."
Wish someone from Samsung would anonymously step in and help us out. The t-mo salesman I worked with (who was very helpful wrt to possibly using it as a phone) said he'd heard that some folks were/are? threatening a class-action lawsuit against the carriers... obviously a money maker for the lawyers... but I don't care... if it'd make them let us use it as a phone, that'd be fine with me.
Couldn't the carrier block phone access for the device by the IMEI number? Then it wouldn't matter what the user did, the tablet would never be able to make a call.
Here's what guyverunit had to say in this thread at post no. 52:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832643&page=6
Someone else reported this too... when you press activate on the Verizon phones at the start, they MAKE CALLS OUT.... this is what he said:
"so knowing that Verizon was selling there version at Best Buy i popped in there today to check it out, see if there plans or anything were better. they had just taken it out of the box and were setting it up. i went to work and on my lunch went back. they had the display set up so i played with it. it was still at the activation screen, i pressed activate and behold it dialed out to do the activation. even had a phone icon in the top bar.
so i talked to the best buy mobile manager there and ask if they had gotten it passed the activation he said no but he would try again. he tried and it dialed out. i said oh so it can make calls, he said yes its just not put into the software to do it for the user end but yes, it can make calls. he also said he gives it two weeks till the DEV community hack it to do just that. LOL"
The t-mo phones do not make phone calls to activate... at least mine didn't... the sales guy activated it by using the bar code and the computer and no "activate screen" came up at all... went straight to browser.
Don't know if that means the phones themselves are different... or if Verizon just kept the Euro phone activation approach...
Maybe the Verizon phones would be the best ones to work with?

One of the Phone.apk' did that for me too. The Phone.apk I'm using now has stopped showing me the connection in the top bar, so looks like that's related to that as well, but at least it's not crashing like it was.
I should really reflash back to base (is that possible atm?) and see what's doable.
I'm still holding on for a euro rom that's flashable to enable everything.
Do you think the Euro rom will work with US hardware, or should they be identical?
I was curious about Paten's question re the IMEI no. possibly being blocked and did a little searching...
I found a freelance programmer's site... codepainters blog....
http://codepainters.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/android-imei-number-and-the-emulator/
and in the course of saying how to change the IMEI number, he says this at the beginning:
"Anyway, code analysis shows that IMEI/IMSI request goes down through all the telephony layers (see the diagram), eventually getting to the baseband device."
I find this interesting because jdmadonna and you describe the phone.apk causing problems down to the baseband level... as did you...
Obviously, IANAAD (I am not an Android developer - my programming days are way in the past)... so maybe there are myriad other things that can cause a problem down to the baseband level...
Maybe it's just as simple as unblocking the ISEI no. as Paten suggests...
I'm also hopeful about the Euro flash, but am not brave enough (nor do I know how) to do it!
You guys are using a different SIM from the one you received with your Tab right? (if you got it on a plan). One that you know voice calling works on?
In Australia, the Tab does not have voice disabled, but they force you (for the initial launch) to sign up for a data only plan. The SIM you get on this plan is blocked for voice, but works for 3G and even sending SMSs.
You just might want to make sure that the SIM you have in actually works for voice in case you DO get it working from a software perspective, but it is just the SIM that is stopping the call.
Aye, swapped the sim over from my other phone (though the PAYG sim I got actually did support voice/data apparently, but I didn't want to risk it so took a known working sim)
Phone.apk
Radio stuff
imei
Don't know. Could be any of them, or combo of 2 or more even.
It's really crazy. I appreciate they probably want to keep it simple as a tablet device, but they're missing out on revenue. "Want to use voice? that's available for another 10 bucks and/or a different(more expensive) sim"
Keeps it working for people who just want a tab, and gets more cash from people who want to dump their phone.
Think it's telling that ALL the telco's are limiting the voice as if anyone of them broke ranks and offered voice, they'd all have to.
Guess we'll see which Telco chickens out first!
/sigh
Re the SIM card... the holder mine came in does say data only, but the tmo rep said it could still handle voice.. seemed odd to me... since jyveafk has tried switching it, guess I'll wait to see if a solution turns up... or the tab is going back and I'm not getting a new phone when my contract's out in protest!

If you had followed your own advice (search and engage brain ), you would realize that they are talking about US Tabs, as the phone function has been disabled on these.
Euro Tabs have phone functionality as standard and the Yanks already know this so your post came over as a little sarcastic!

Any chance you can adb pull the Phone.apk from your Tab please?
I've been using the Galaxy phone .apk's, not another Tab's Phone that's known to work. Perhaps this is the issue.
Can you pull it and post it please?

Its probably nerd rage... hes mad hes working in a Verizon store and is just trying to scare you =D
There was a thread on this subject before, unfortunately it's been merged into the giant 'Network-related' thread.
The long and short of it is that they're supposedly introducing methods of tracking rooted/jailbroken handsets because people are abusing tethering.
But if you want to read what was said, it starts here.
You'll just have to try and follow the discussion as best you can given it's mixed in with posts from other threads.
cool i'll check it out.
Supreme court ruling was very clear on this. They (the carriers) cannot act against anyone with a custom rom... because the ruling clearly stated that you bought the phone therefore it is yours to do what you want.
The Tethering is a different issue all together, that is easy to track, just by usage.
But the long and the short of it is the carriers have no authority over the phone you purchased as long as you are not abusing the data agreement
well as it seems they used a poor method on finding out who has a custom rom or not. accepting and not accepting an ota update is stupid because there could be and probably are a bunch of people that don't care about updates (i know a fair amount of them) that don't install these. i just read what p3droid had posted upon the topic. it is very disturbing. considering some people (crazy and pointless as it is) use their phones for torrent and (as useful as it may be) VPN services such as tech support for companies and so on. so the use of data whether tethered or not is no different. personally i use my phone for tech support from time to time with the use of vpn services and remote desktop. it is if you look at it insane! it's like having your isp telling you what websites you can and cannot go to.
ok now that i have all that out of my head and on forum, even if it is alittle random. thoughts on this topic more specifically?!
me thinks that Verizon is trolling you, and like stated before me, just a nerd rage
I can live without tethering. Non rooted phone...not so much.

Yours is probably the first logical argument i read regarding the tethering debate. The first one to actualy make me understand the reasoning. Ok, I'll bite into that one, if we are truly, undoubtedly talking about un unlimited plan, i understand why limitations must be aplied, but what about when talking about caped plans, how is that logic not abusive from the carrier's side, as it logically seems to be abusive on the consumers side when talking about truly unlimited data... could it be about those grandfathered unlimited plans? Even so, if one looks at this issue objectively, it still is the carriers fault. What would you a expect, as a carrier that applies hidden or bogus charges, from the consummation? There's no right or wrong here, from neither sides, as i see it, based on your logic. This is the balancing i was talking about. But instead, we get a rushing of decisions, that apparently seem to be in everyone's interest, nationwide, but, actually, in depth, it turns out to "hurt" consumers that don't realy deserve that kind of, for lack of a better word, ruling...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe some Countries and actually some Counties around the US do this. I've read some guys on here complaining about their internet being data capped and controlled on which websites they can access. This is true also in some Counties around the US. I recall a few Counties around me here in New York that dont allow the selling of hard porn.
And if I'm also not mistaken (and I certainly could be, because I've never tried this), if you try to sign up for a porn site, if you live in one of those zip codes, and you put in your info (ie. zip code), it detects your zip code and doesnt let you register.
just some food for thought.

next step in this discussion?... well, might as well!
who wants to start the honors?
Honestly, I dont care if they ban or limit us rooted users (not that it will happen or maybe, one thing are manufactores and one thing are carriers) but what I dislike about LTE is that it gives carriers the ability to monitor what we surf, download and even down to the quality of videos and pictures we see. They can filter pages too. LTE Was not made with consumers in mind but carriers. FCC rule out that ISP WIRED CANNOT do this but have given WISP a go on this. or at least they havent rule any regulations. MetroPC does this already.
Perhaps we should create a sticky regarding typical first steps most users might want to take?
Such as APN settiings, rooting, what NOT to do, etc?
My Gnote is comnig in the am. what are the first few things new GNote owners want to do? Maybe we could create a list, and if so, would it be the same as the SGS2?
Thanks,
Jason

OK just for the hell of it I wrote lg asking for a bootloader unlock claiming that I paid full price for my phone and should be able to do with it what I want like if I wanted to throw it against the wall I'm allowed but if I want to install a custom ROM you're not going to allow me to do this so anyway here is the response I got
------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
Dear Mr. Shreve,
Thank you so much for contacting LG Electronics USA!
I am more than glad to assist you with your concern. Please accept our apologies for the misinformation
We understand you will like to be able to unlock the boot loader in your phone; however the boot loader is locked due to a carrier request and we are not allowed to either unlock or provide information on how to unlock the boot loader. This would violate our contract established with the carriers.
I am so sorry to have to disappoint you in this matter and I truly wish I had a more favorable answer for you.
Thank you so much for contacting us and for your time. At the bottom, you will be able to see a survey and score your experience with me. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via Email, Live Chat or by calling 800-243-0000. Thank you very much for your kindness and patience! Please enjoy the rest of your day and I wish you the best!
Sincerely,
Lorraine D.
Edit- I'm on the phone right now with Verizon trying to get a letter from them to give to lg to get the bootloader unlocked will keep you updated on how it goes I doubt if I'll get anywhere but I figured it was worth a shot
OK still on hold I'm being put thru to a tech support manager
This sucks. Hopefully here in South Africa the carriers have different opinions on bootloader locking on the international D855 variant. I'll try to contact them and any repose I get I'll be sure to post on here XDA.
OK still on the line with Verizon but the good news is that Verizon is actually calling lg for me to see if they won't unlock the bootloader or tell me how to do it fingers crossed

But her it was worth a shot nothing gained nothing lost

yes basically they're all lying about the bootloader I called lg back several times and they basically told me they have no way to get the unlock codes for the bootloader so I read back the email they sent me and they said the person was wrong for sending me false information .
I got quite irate and asked to speak to a supervisor which did no good at all because he didn't even know what a bootloader was I had to explain it to him he then said he'd check into it but no success
I just had to laugh that a supervising tech support guy had no clue what a bootloader was

Wow - I literally went through almost the same process with Sprint this evening. A game of "It's Sprint's fault" followed by "It's LG's fault". Sprint then told me if I paid off my contract they would unlock the bootloader - apparently the whole time they thought I wanted the carrier unlock because they too had no idea what a bootloader unlock was. The supervisor said they could not unlock the bootloader and to yet again contact LG. LG finally told me they can't unlock the bootloader. Big waste of time but thought I'd give it a shot too.
I love this phone - it took a lot of root tweaks but I get amazing battery life, great photos and a lag free experience. However - not being able to install custom kernels or even make a nandroid is beginning to really frustrate me. I'm gonna be patient that our devs figure something out but this may be the last LG phone I buy. If they won't be dev friendly like HTC, they won't get anymore of my money. Not that it will matter because they'll still make a crapload but it's the principle. Lol.
Well I just responded inline with the first email lg sent me and started that I had permission from my carrier to unlock the bootloader so I'm just waiting on a response
Doubt it'll get me anywhere but what the hell

That's how I looked at it - it was irritating but while I wait I might as well try other avenues. Thanks and keep us posted.
Lg will never unlock Verizon unless Verizon says so.Ask the Dev about this each g3 (Verizon) for example has different issues they are running into..Verizon has no fastboot, just to name one..The other do..Sprint from what I hear has done a great job on making unlock difficult. Bottom line Verizon, sprint etc do have contracts with lg,they ask certain things to be done and lg does those things if they want their device to be sold by them..
On an individual bases, take the letter from the carrier, stating it's ok to unlock, and take LG to small claims court. In most cases they may not show, and providing you have 'evidence', the letter, the judge may opine for you. If so the court will notify LG that you were awarded the case, and XXX in $. Once the idea catches on, LG may very well unlock the G3. This process works very well.
Once a win occurs, make a youtube video, and that will also apply pressure, and for others to also take the time to go to small claims court,
May not take long or many cases. Small claims costs are relatively cheap across the states. You may also serve them with a subpoena duce mecum (asking for XXX records). They may not have to reply, but on the occasion they do, the info could be very helpful.
I was just gonna kidnap some Korean and demand LG to unlock. Haha. Sorry for the distasteful comment. I opt and hope that someone unlocks it.
I ask LG about Android 4.4.4 and unlock bootloader solution. There are their answer (my translation):
You could be happy, we are going to release huge update for G3.
We offer this product in the safest condition as google recommendations.
So I wrote them again:
Yes or no question.. Do you ever unlock G3? (Nexus and Moto phones, HTC and even Samsung offer this ability so don't blame google. )
Their answer is really simple. No we are not. Thank you for your trust.
I dont think the bootloader will be unlocked at this stage, its looking much like the G2, the G4 will be out soon enough and this will be another forgotten handset.
LG's stance on an official bootloader unlock looks to be a pretty clear negative one. I'm amazed that even after creating two Nexus devices & working in close co-operation with Google for the past 2 years LG still hasn't learnt or appreciated the impact of the developer community. There is no Developer Edition G3 or Google Play Edition G3 in sight either, so I'm pretty sure they're not least bit bothered about working on the bootloader as such.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure we're better off waiting & encouraging our devs to work on the bootloader unlock and/or exploit rather then LG giving a solution. I'm positive it'll be done, and when it is, I'll gladly jump ship to any AOSP based ROM in a flash! (pun intended)
I for one would be very happy to have unlocked bootloader on my D855. But seeing from LG's perspective it is not wise, such uninformed newbie could make system edit and bork their phone and ask LG for a replace.
Only a few of my friends knows about bootloader, others dont even know what root is. So i guess LG just choose to ignore or even intentionally make so the bootloader is very hard to bypass.

For the ones who are lazy in reading comments, this is the reason that this guy gives for the delay:
"Verizon delays on latest smartphones are due to Nationwide HD Voice. We want to make sure Software updates for HD Voice service is acceptable and does not impact voice quality. Verizon is the only company that has nationwide HD Voice in the USA. AT&T just has most metro cities here and there. T-Mobile and Sprint are way behind"
:good:
P.D. Maybe now is the time for the Maxx's users to complain about not getting 5.1 as well as the Turbo.
Doesn't the iPhone 6 have HD Voice already? I wonder why they didn't need to delay its release by months so they can test it.

From the same guy:
AC 1.0 is not just network related. The unique situation Verizon finds itself is having its original CDMA voice network.. Hard for us to dance around between LTE and CDMA to support VoLTE due to best signal strength in different environments. So with each device update, there is usually a few Qualcomm patches to improve that transition and try to cover all possible calling scenarios our customers may face in our network. And also supporting XLTE new bands. Some device updates turn on a new LTE band on a phone that might have been dormant in an earlier software build.
And Qualcomm is not perfect, so some times when they improve on thing, they break another. So my job and many others in Verizon is to double check all software changes our devices take in... Hence the delay

Motorola is small potatoes on budget compared to Samsung and Apple. Delays are usually due to funding for test verifications on new device software.
Jeeze, I should just shut up... Bye everyone

Guess I need to check out kingroot thread again - it didn't seem to be as baked as the current system / images root method.

Take "mid-June" with a grain of salt.
All that means is it probably won't come BEFORE then.
Note the Google + post has been deleted which was referenced in the op. So, actually there is no date promise anymore...
Yeah, there's a lot of built up anger towards Motorola and Verizon (should be directed towards Verizon), so any engineers/spokespeople who publicly post even good news at this point will get lots of backlash for broken promises, lack of past communication -- and rightly so. They need to learn from this instead of running away from it.

"Sorry followers... I got in trouble for Turbo announcement... Need to keep my mouth shut from now on... Enjoy Verizon services and our great devices. "
Nexus 6 is near identical internals.
VoLTE works fine sans camera and I'm certain that is software related.
So I'd take the VoLTE cause for the hold up with a grain of salt too. Especially since Verizon was so willing to ship it last year when it was clearly broken and would have shown in testing.
