Hi guys,
I've just got myself a nexus 7 which I am delighted with. I would say that I am a confident android user, but I have never rooted or installed a custom rom so I need some sound advice. Basically, I have just purchased a usb OTG cable so I can connect my memory sticks and external hard drive and access movies etc through them. I am currently using a keyboard with the nexus 7, but I understand that a root is required for file access.
Basically, I have a few requirements/questions:
1. I need a root to allow me to access files from external devices using the usb otg cable.
2. I would like to get flash capability, which obviously isn't available anymore for Jellybean officially.
3. I heard a root can ruin your google wallet security or something and it cannot be reversed?
4. Can a root be 100% undetectable if it is reversed or are there traces that can still be detected if I sent it to Asus (say if it was faulty)
5. Is there a rom that will give me flash, that is reliable (or stock!) and that will allow external file access via the otg cable?
Sorry it's a lot, but I am overwhelmed with the amount of options available! Please help...thanks!
Hi mate,
Glad your still enjoying you tablet (still think mines awesome even after a month). I don't mind thinking a lot as long as it helps someone
1. Yeah you need to root for this, use this toolkit from Wug, It's really simple and walks you through every step : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
2. I've just downloaded this, not tested it yet but apparently it streams videos and simple flash in chrome http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848508
You can also side load flash with Firefox. (I've never been too successful with this, i'm going to give it another go soon)
3. Not sure about this as i'm in the UK and it won't work. (Can't even get it to load up!)
4. Yeah it should be undetectable, lots have already been replaced on here that have been rooted previously. Just look on some of the threads general section.
5. Stock will let you access the flash drive after you have Stickmount installed. (Of course you have to be rooted to use it): https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImV1LmNoYWluZmlyZS5zdGlja21vdW50Il0.
Hope I've been able to help you :good:
Just be warned that some OTG cables don't work and some flash drives won't work. Something to do with the voltage output of the USB I think.....
Hey guys,
I'm a new Nexus 7 user (Will be delivered today) and I'm just looking for some quick advice to get started.
I have had a good search/read of forum and found various rooting methods/kernels and some roms I will be trying out etc and shouldn't have any problem getting myself started, however to lower risk I'm just looking for some seasoned N7 users to maybe give me any recommendations or advice.
I'm not a n00b and dont expect/want any spoon feeding, Maybe just a few pointers to avoid any ****ups/bricks on N7/flashing techniques.
Advice/Links would be appreciated.

Thnx, This was one of the apps I was looking at in my research so will give it a go.
I know you're not a noob because i saw you in S2 Q/A section several times. I recommand you to unlock your bootloader and flash a custom recovery with fastboot and after that you can flash superSU with the custom recovery.
PM me if you want more advices/links.
Since unlocking your bootloader wipes the device - including the psuedo-SD card, you may as well do that first - as soon as it comes out of the box - and get it over with.
The custom recoveries use a different USB VID/PID pair than the normal OS boot for the ADB endpoint - so a single driver (Asus or Google) won't talk to the custom recoveries in ADB mode unless you edit their .INF files (use notepad app, not any other editor) so you can use a single driver for fastboot/adb-OS/adb-recovery. For signed drivers this breaks their signing, but you can still install them. I suppose others get around this by installing multiple drivers - including drivers off of XDA of mysterious origin which are also unsigned.
You can find documentation of relevant USB VID/PID pairs at the bottom of this post

You might find the top bit of that post useful, too
Some folks claim that you need the latest version of the SDK to deal with the new 4.2.2 adb security layer. IMO, I'm not convinced (I'm using Asus drivers from 6/2012, not Google, and everything seems to work fine.) But, it certainly can't hurt to update your SDK.
After that you might as well run stock for a week or two while you are doing more reading (OK, let's say rooted stock); that way when you start ROM-hopping you will have a baseline experience to compare against.
Get yourself a decent OTG cable; maybe a USB key that has storage capacity as big as your device, too. If you want to mount Mass Storage devices as "OTG" devices on a rooted-stock ROM, use chainfire's Stickmount app from the market.
And lastly - just like with any other device, make full Nandroid backups - including for your lightly-rooted stock ROM. You never know when you might want to pull bits and pieces from them later.
Also, I consider myself decently skilled at this stuff - but because I came from a device with a real external SD card, I have managed to totally wipe out my "psuedo-SD card" twice now because I got in a hurry and wasn't paying attention. Moral: at a minimum, get copies of your Nandroid backups off of the device.
Finally, don't use a toolkit - you will learn nothing, and be unable to resolve even the most trivial of problems which eventually crop up. Underneath the hood it's all fastboot and adb anyway.

And have fun enjoying your new Nexus. Do yourself a favor no matter what method you use to root/flash: read everything in the op before you flash anything and its better if you wait until others post feedback. I still have a $200 paperweight that says KINDLE on the back.

Thanks - fixed it. Dropped one digit at the end.
Thnx for advice guys, will be rom hopping for a while until I find one to stay with for a while. Currently on CM10.1.
As mentioned the lack of real ext sd is a bit of a ball ache. Really wish they had have added the slot to new nexus range.
I have a WinBook TW800 from Micro Center. I wanted to load Windows 10 on it, has anyone on here done this? Maybe you can give me tips\pointers on how to go about doing this; is the update method better or would a clean install be the ideal way? Thanks for your help in advanced.
Well I got my answer today while trying to do it via the update way. I got an error that my tablet wasn't able to upgrade because the OS is compressed something about Boot WIM. SMH.

I can help you install it, in fact, I can make a guide. I have the TW801 and everything is working properly.

Cool, I will appreciate it. Thanks.
Any luck on getting a guide posted
Sorry for taking ages, I totally forgot about this.

is it for free?
Issues
I'm having issues too. I don't think the 800 has enough space to do the install. The 801 seems like a better option due to the 16gb of storage, vs the 8gb on the 800.

I will try it this some time this week. Thanks.
No luck
Apparently I can't because the memory is full so I basically can't do anything with this POS. I can't back it up or restore it or add anything to it, it actually runs out of disk space when uninstalling stuff.
I successfully installed Windows 10 on my TW-801 I first installed internally (internal installation failed) and then installed again via the sdcard (so you have to burn the win image to the sdcard for the second install in addition to doing the download for the first install). The second time Windows 10 was activated. I am also running Ubuntu with VMWare on a virtual machine on this tablet. Windows 10 is alot better than 8.1 on this tablet. I think even though the internal installation fails it saves the Windows 10 activation code and the second install works because it is not a download and is directly from the cd or in this case the sd. Also, during the first download (that fails) two files are created on the c drive that I copied to the sdcard that I had already burned the win image on it - I don't know if that did anything or not.
Hey guys,
I had to get a new Nexus 6P because my other one was having the background echo problem. But, anyways, how would I transfer the data from one phone to the other, so it seems like nothing changed?
I know about making a Nanroid backup, but my phone is a 64gb with only 5 gb left, so leaving that option out. I can't find a way to save the nanroid directly to the computer?

The only way is via a nandroid backup, you'll need to free up some space temporarily.

Yeah seems like i dont have a choice but to remove some apps and such
Just out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference using Nanroid backup and Titanium backup, and which do you recommend?

Well a nandroid backup will make a snapshot of your device exactly as it is, with not only apps backed up, but all of your settings as well. Titanium will only backup your apps. I'd choose the nandroid option. Just make sure you only backup system, data, and boot (leave all other options unchecked).
Back when I was using a Nexus 5, I use a OTG cable so I could backup/restore to a 256GB USB flash drive.
Will the same setup work for a 6P?

I'll order one on amazon and see what it would do, but it seems unlikely since it would not create 2 SDcard slots in Android. Worth giving it a shot.

I'm curious if it will work as well as I'm sure at some point, I won't have enough space on the 6P to run a nandroid backup.
Finding an appropriate USB-C OTG cable might be tricky too since I've heard so many bad things about out of spec USB-C cables. I tried using a USB-C adapter on my old micro USB OTG cable and it didn't work.

Its a pretty good idea and worth a shot.
I order 2 different cables,
a direct type c cable
http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-VicTs...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
and a USB 2.0 cable
http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Samus...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
Also I ordered a type-c 64gb memory stick
http://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Stell...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
I'll keep you updated on what happens, i'll get the package wednesday
this http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Femal... c to usb 3&qid=1462291528&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2 works with my 6P
I back up to a flash drive all the time.
Slow, but it works.
Quick update:
all the wires i had listed work just fine. I prefer the 64gb usb type-c memory stick, since it was smaller and easier to use.
I had created a nanroid backup of everything and then transferred it from my old 6P to my new 6P...everything worked...kinda...the fingerprint didn't work. I did realize it until after and when i read into it, it seems its due to the fingerprint having some special ID number linked to it.
So it seems i have to start from scratch and/or use titanium to restore the apps.
also to note, i had to use an app called stick mount to write to the USB. I will probably look more into this later for a better app, but it works for now. Also to note, you have to be rooted to properly use this app.
One down side, make sure to keep your battery charged as you will not be able to charge and back up the data.
There have been more updates on another thread that i started about the issue with restoring with a nanroid.
as far as external storage, use a thumbdrive or otg cable. This thread could be closed and marked solved.
Why not just backup your whole phone directly to the PC with ADB? There are many tutorials online. Here's one.

What did you format the USB memory stick to? Did you have to use FAT32?
I had an ExFAT 256GB flash drive that wasn't recognized but a FAT32 1GB flash drive was.
Not being able to use ExFAT would be kinda weird since that means no files larger than 4GB.
Ah, the ExFAT problem is with Marshmallow's OTG support only.
I was able to backup to an ExFAT flash drive when booted into TWRP.
Edit: Though I did read elsewhere on XDA that StickMount works with ExFAT so I will have to test that out later.
Hope this might help someone else in this thread as I have done some further tests. Maybe other scenarios might get the fingerprint reader working.
Once fingerprints have been used, even deleting/disabling it does not seem to allow the restored backup to configure finger prints again. I have 2 sets of 6P. Let's say A & B.
1. Backup A with Fingerprint and restore to B
Result : Fail
Delete Locksettings
Result : Able to unlock and set pattern lock but setting fingerprint will always not be able to register new fingers, use current fingers or delete earlier registered fingers
2. Backup A without Fingerprint and restore to B
Result : Fail
Delete Locksettings
Result : Able to unlock and set pattern lock but setting fingerprint will always not be able to register new fingers at all
3. Backup A without any security of pattern lock or Fingerprint and restore to B
Result : Fail
Delete Locksettings
Result : Able to unlock and set pattern lock but setting fingerprint will always not be able to register new fingers although it says no fingers registered. Keeps saying "Unable to complete registration".
Seems like as what a few other members have encountered. all TWRP restores to a new device will result in the fingerprint reader being totally useless. Will have to do restores with Titanium Backup on a newly setup 6P till someone figures this out.

Hey Thanks for the Testing. TWRP definitely needs a setting to refuse to backup hardware device/drivers/model/serial numbers. That way the backup is just app files and settings to the point of allowing the phone backup will copy from device A to device B as a perfect mirror image without affecting device/drivers/model/serial numbers. I wonder if anyone can get in touch with the developers so we can figure something out.
Hi folks,
I think few people have already experienced that but I literraly can't download single file over 2Gb which is really annoying.
Ofc I've already performed a full wipe, cleaned everything, reinstall OS with stock firmware. I also tried to switch from official Oxygen OS to Open beta but nothing works.
The only thing I didn't tried is to format storage into f2fs (i'm actually in ext4)
But 1- I don't think it'll work because I didn't have any problem in ext4
2 - I can't install any OS after it's formated (I get error 7) even if I know how I could get rid of this error.
Moreover, I can't use any OTG stuff and I think it's linked cuz this issue appeared at the same time (or my OTG cable is maybe dead lol)
If anyone has an idea it'd be really great.
I'm facing this issue for weeks now and because it's very uncommon, no one try to help me...
Download using Android Download Manager and you are good to go
Hey. Finally I found a solution.
I have no issue with chrome 68 and the new download manager.
However, I don't understand why I was facing this problem with old chrome versions.
And unfortunately my OTG cable still not work

Oh well, I never faced this issue with chrome before but it's fixed anyway.
Yes my phone is rooted. I'm using OOS Open Beta 15, but even when I was on official OOS, it didnt work... I also tried to wipe + reinstall the firmware, but even with OOS Nougat it didnt work...
I wonder if it's an encryption issue
it's google. they've crippled android more each version out of contempt for power users. Anyone paying attention can easily see that their actions are not aligned with their supposed philosophy they like to brag on. If they spent half as much time on quality control as they do on platform control, then they might have something besides borked ux. Even their stock rom is useless
