...or at least I hope that this is possible. I really don't want to take the old advice which says "buy a Japanese cellphone and stop worrying" as the MDA is hard to replace and after "teaching" it how to read and write Japanese there's nothing I'd really miss just keeping it. Against the myth you can get standard SIM cards in Japan, too and the only critical point would be the wireless standard used in Japan. The Phone tab say that it supports WCDMA, but I read before that this is not true for every Japanese provider. Softbank (Vodafone) is said to be compatible to the European UMTS standard. Can anybody here validate this? It would safe me a lot of money getting a decent Japanese cellphone as my "brick" still has a year or two of life in it
Yes the Universal works in Japan. At least in most places... it seems to lose the signal in the middle of a subway tunnel but gets it back quickly at the station ;P
I think our 'bricks' will be around a lot longer than that as they don't seem to be giving us a direct replacement :¬D
That's great news, but which provider do you use eksekki? Softbank? Or maybe it doesn't really matter after all? And we're not talking about the Japanese Universal here, right? And about the direct replacement: Is the 'Omni' really vaporware? I always had my hopes up for that one...
SB/Vodafone + Universal works. As for any other operator, if you can get a SIM card that fits into Universal I really don't see any reason why it wouldn't work(*). Hardware wise, I use (UK) Xda Exec brand but all the HTC Universal models are the same and there is no "Japanese universal" right (just ROM maybe)? No problems with different (English) ROM versions including WM6 - hence the "universal" =) There's just no replacement for this brick!
* edit: as long as they have a 2100 MHz WCDMA network :|
Any etra work needed?
I'm just calling back this thread from the ghosts to ask whether any extra steps are needed to use my Universal in Japan. I've seen a patch for the Hermes to use the Softbank AP, but I wonder: Shouldn't the Universal work straight out of the box if I pop in the Softbank card? Is it just because the AP password is hardcoded into the Japanese ROM? Speaking of which: What is the latest native Japanese (Softbank) WM5 ROM? The search didn't reveal anything. What kind of services will I miss if I just leave a Japanese enabled English WM5 ROM on the device? Would be great if someone could enlighten me a bit.
Hi everyone
I bought a Samsung Omnia 7 on T-Mobile UK last December and unlocked/debranded using the very helpful instructions here:
(can't post a link but search "wccftech debrand omnia 7")
I now use it on T-Mobile USA and it works great, except that there's no 3G. I've done a lot of reading on these and other forums and it's clear that it does not support the right frequencies to use 3G in the US. However, I have also seen mentions that the actual radio chip inside the phone can support these frequencies, it's just a matter of flashing the right ROM to unlock them. I'm really not an expert though and I've trawled the web looking for answers, then I came across this forum.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction, or at least, tell me it can't be done.
Thanks in advance
Since you've debranded it warranty isn't the issue, so I would try either flashing new stock Rom or flashing with custom Rom.
You can easily find tutorials in windows phone 7 hacking and developing section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=606
Maybe there's some easier solution, since similar issues affected some developer/interlop unlocked phones upon their unlocking.
You can try Samsung Network Profile app form Samsung marketplace first. Maybe that will be enough.
I suppose you have filled apn sections for your provider in cellular data section? If not you should do so according to your provider.
I hope sth of this will help.
You could try to flash a specific radio FW from Focus AT&T(only the radio). Look inside the Focus sub-forums, I used to flash radios from Omnia7 on my Focus and there were no hiccups.
Hi All....Firstly I apologise if I'm putting this thread in the wrong section but as a novice please forgive me...
I am thinking of buying the N700 from panamoz.com as it's cheap but they have said there units are imported from the far east and there for cannot guarantee if they will work in the UK...
so my questions to the forum are:
1. If a phone is unlocked wouldn't it work if I put a T-mobile sim in it?
2. as the phone is shipped in from the Far East some Eng(UK) apps won't , work or be available in English UK...if not is there a way to configure the phone for them to work...?
3. Would I need to Install Mobile phone specifics configurations in order for the note to work??
Thanks for your help in advance..
Neil
1. If it is factory unlocked then you should have no trouble using your UK T-Mobile SIM in it.
2. I don't see why any app wouldn't work on it, never encountered such an issue with any Android device I've used. If you do get issues then there's always custom roms .
3. You may have to set up the APN settings if you keep the stock foreign ROM, but that is easy and takes a couple of seconds with a single Google search. Of course custom roms generally have huge APN lists built in and would have your necessary configuration.
Hope that helps.

Remember to make sure it is an N7000 and note an I9220. They are different, albeit slightly.
Hello,
I am currently in Japan and my device does not manage to connect to Docomo network, it simply doesn't find anything when manually searching for networks.
With my home simcard it eventually found Softbank network, although i had to travel long distances until it worked and if I reboot I'm back to square one. With the japanese sim, it has never worked.
I know the hardware supports it so at this point i'm thinking about the modem, but which modem should I flash for it to work in japan (and east asia area possibly?). I looked around in the forums but didn't find a definite answer.
I am currently running OmegaDroid v40 (android 4.4.2 and baseband XXUFNC9)
Any help or tips would be appreciated as my situation make it extremely painful to live without phone or internet access !
Thanks in advance!
Bump, nobody has any input or experience with S4 in Japan ?
My old charging port melted because of what I suspect was a faulty charging cable, so I bought a new charging port board from China and swapped it in. Phone is now charging again, everything appears to be working except that I cannot get any service from my carrier. SIM card is acknowledged, it even shows the phone number in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, but phone picks up no service.
I am in Canada and have the USA version of the Axon 7. Never rooted or flashed any ROMs, is on Android 7.1.1. Carrier was Freedom Mobile and the phone was on LTE band 4 where I live... And for what it's worth, I also swapped in the old daughterboard with the melted charging port (after I've charged with the new board), phone picked up service right away
I suppose the charging port board /daughter board I got was from another version of Axon 7 and the network chip is somehow not reading my SIM? What do I need to do?
Would greatly appreciate any thoughts or info that could point me in the right direction! Thanks in advance

Correct! You got the A2017 Chinese rf band chip/antenna. You need either a A2017U board to get bands here in US.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions! So I did some more research and found out that the Chinese version doesn't support the LTE bands that my carrier runs, but it does have WCDMA/UMTS Band 2 and 5. I popped in a SIM card from a carrier that have towers in those 3G bands but the phone still wouldn't pick up service. (or am I mixing up WCDMA and UMTS? Those two are used interchangeably from what I've seen)
There was this this previous thread that suggests flashing the full firmware or the modem, or simply getting a GSM SIM inserted into the phone would work. I do have trouble switching the network mode away from LTE/WCDMA/GSM to WCDMA or GSM only.
Any chance I could get the Chinese daughterboard working on the US version (preferably without having to backup data and flashing anything)? If it reaches the 3G network that it is supposed to be compatible with would be great for now!
Alternatively where should I get the US version of the daughterboard? That would solve all my problems.. I have looked on Ebay/Aliexpress again and don't see anything compatible (all from Chinese sellers and some of them dont even have the additional IC that comes with the US version of the phone).

Will keep an eye out.
Still looking and hoping to find ways to make the Chinese board work in the US phone
Have you tried the network operator settings ?
I'm not sure if this will work but its worth a try.
Because of the hardware changes it may not be detecting the network now.
The Chinese board could very well be messing up the outcome.

Yes it's a good idea.
I've looked into that, I've tried clearing all the network settings and it still doesn't pick up service. Only thing I haven't tried so far is a factory reset but then I have tens of gigs of app data I need to back up before I do that..
Did you let your phone scan for networks?
Settings > network > mobile network > network operators.
In Oreo its.
Settings > network > sim card > mobile network > network operators.
Let it scan(this can take a minute or 2) then select your appropriate provider.
Hope this helps
So someone tried to charge the phone with a micro usb cable and ruined the port. It will only charge slowly when powered down. I bought a cheap chinese charging port board 15.99 plus 2.00 shipping and now it fast charges( off&on) but have no cell service. So I put the original back, and the cell service works. THe chinese board has this E222034 and no QR code, and the original has a QR code with E315850. My phone is a usa model, and does anyone know where to get a compatible one?

Time to take the soldering iron! Lmao
There surely are U boards online, though maybe you'll need to buy a scrap phone
Any luck sourcing a U board?
Same problem here. Tried boards with IC chip and without from AliExpress and Ebay - none of them are working. Sellers are claiming that all boards support A2017U.
Searching for any networks give an error right away and refuses to search.
Any help with finding A2017U compatible board is greatly appreciated.
Here for the same search...
Bump. I'm in the same boat, I have a broken pin in my charging port. I was going to order one on ebay that claims to be A2017U compatible but after reading this thread, I'm skepticle. Did anyone managed to find a working board for the A2017U?
Correct board

Thanks for the post. I couldn't find the exact listing for the ad in your post, however I did find some with the original IC chip manufactured by Jiaruila.
Can confirm if that indeed is the brand of the board, thanks.

First one is cheaper by $5, both are the same brand. I emailed the sellers for clarification but both were of no help.

Hi, I have an A2017U but bought an A2017 replacement charge board. Were you able to get this board working (functioning cell service) with your phone either through flashing a different firmware or modem file? Thanks.

Did you end up ordering either of these boards? Did they work for your A2017U?
