dual boot OOS and another ROM - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

I have a OnePlus 6t 256 GB model and I e say only a few options for dual booting the phone. Has the been any new development on this? The last thing I read would've worked but the poster mentioned it was only for the 128gb model.

My other Oneplus broke so I will get a Oneplus 6t today or tomorrow and I will try to get a Dualboot working on that one.
I will get the 128 GB Version but it should detect and work with the 256 GB Version as well.
I will let you know when I have it working here and you can give it a try on yours for the 256 GB Version!

Yes I got the Oneplus 6t now.
Will have to test/check some other things first now but then I will give that a try.
EDIT: OK sorry that was not working as expected and I had to do MSM downloadtool to get my device up and running again. I will need to do some more adjustments to that dualboot flashing script.
Will continue with that during the weekend and hope that I figure it out and get it to work then!

@Newrooter22 can you send me the output of the following commands from a root Terminal from your phone? I want to check how these looks like for the 256GB Version of the phone.
SGDISK can be downloaded from here if you dont have it.
Code:
sgdisk /dev/block/sda --print
Code:
ls -al /dev/block/by-name/
Thank you!
EDIT: I can tell you that I am doing success here. Not all worked at the first try since I had to manually format the different partitions but now I have Userdata_a , Userdata_b, and a Commondata partion.
Just flashing ROMS on Slot A and slot B now to see if it works as expected. Then I will have to adjust a few things in the script so that the formatting etc will work automatically and it should detect both the 128 GB and the 256 GB devices and I guess it will work for the normal Oneplus 6 as well as for the 6T then.

Yes exactly. Thank you!
So that latest status is that I got it to work to have dualboot on my Oneplus 6t now.
I have to figure out some more things since some steps didnt work automatically and I had to manually do some steps in order to have all the partitions correct.
-Had to manually do some formatting steps in order to get all the User and Common data partitions to work and formatted.
-The commondata is not getting mounted yet from within the ROM (but it is visible and usable from TWRP)
-When having Android 11 on one slot and flashiong the dualboot file it is hanging when it tries to flash that slot with Android 11 so that slot stays without TWRP then.

It's sounding promising mate that's good, if you need anything else just ask and I'll get back to you as quick as I can. I'm not that good at the nitty gritty parts but can help with the simple stuff probably ?

No thanks that should work now to detect both the 128 GB and the 256 GB of our device.
And I hope I will have some ofd the issues fixed within the next days.
Then you could perhaps have a flashable Version for your phone by end of this week.

Hello!
Here I pushed an initial ALPHA release for a modified Dualboot TWRP for the Oneplus 6 series!!

Just thought I'd give you an update, I attempted it with version 2 this morning and everything went great up until it starting hanging on the inactive slot. I followed the instructions but couldn't get it to work.
It did come up saying common data and internal storage for slot a but never saw slot b (phone still booted as well).
I was rushing a bit as I'm heading out soon but looking forward to trying it again tonight. Thanks a lot for the work mate and I'll let ya know when I get it up and running, cheers mate have a good day ??

HI!
Yes I see. I know what the issue is with the inactive slot hanging. I tries to search for a file which is not existing in that place and then the script is just looping there.
I actually did a small ugly fix for that which actually works but then there were some other things like root not working in the ROM so I have to fix it for real now!
What ROMS/Android Versions you want to install in the slots?

OK good. I am running now Carbon ROM Android 10 on one slot and PixenOS Android 11 on the other.

Hi I manage to carry out the dual boot and everything's working great thanks :svetius
However there is one issue if you can help, when I try to download from play store or download something from chrome it says not enough storage. I had a look and the old download paths don't exist anymore it's all been grouped under android folder. I tried to take a screenshot to let you see however it came up saying it can't because of the lack of internal storage.
I'm using a,b,c layout. Running OOS 10.3.5 and carbon ROM.
Any advise would be great, personally I think it's to do with download paths mismatching after the repartitioning but you'll probs know more about it and a possible fix.
Thanks
(I chose 96gb per partition)

(Software) Free Paragon Partition Manager 10 TODAY ONLY

Hey guys, just an FYI-
Giveawayoftheday.com is featuring the above listed download for 17 more hours. This is NOT warez, as multiple companies allow free downloads for a 24 hour period. My advice is to download and activate this software FAST, as there are only about 17 more hours (as of this posting) to activate it. I've found PPM 9.0 to be very easy to use while partitioning, repartitioning, and formatting my card.
It's quicker than typing it all in console

I second that. PM 10 is awesome for PCs, but I wouldn't use it to partition my G1. There are partitioning tools built right into the latest Cyanogen's recovery image, and scripts around it to make it easier to use.
Helpfull for noobs.. Nice find.. WIll this work for the G1? The trial ones would only partition your local drives C:\
cheers
partition manager provides an easy way for the windows user to create the correct paritions in the correct order on any sd card so is valuable in this instance.
also aside from that its brilliant if you want to move a complete operating system to a new drive, it does this with vista and the machine wont even ask for reactivation.
anyways thats way off topic...
its definately worth using instead of Gparted if you havnt got a linux based setup.
PEACE. THANX.

It's funny how things work differently for everyone. I'm running Vista x86 and never had issues partitioning my SD card on my g1. Anyhow, some may find it useful.
Just downloaded and saved I'd rather use cyanogen's recovery image though
Thank you Sr. I do find it useful .. I have always used Paragon to partition my G1 with no problems at all..

Trust me, I do the same. I keep it bookmarked in my cell and on my PC
Just to let you guys know what has happened to me in the past with paragon. I was able to use it and was very simple but 2 times out of the 3 or 4 months I used it something went wrong with the partitioning which caused my pc to crash. Thus leaving me to reinstall the OS all over again. Good thing I kept everything backed up though.
Thanks for the find, unfortunately im downloading at 15kb/s. I feel like im using aol from 95

? Windows 10 on a WinBook TW800

I have a WinBook TW800 from Micro Center. I wanted to load Windows 10 on it, has anyone on here done this? Maybe you can give me tips\pointers on how to go about doing this; is the update method better or would a clean install be the ideal way? Thanks for your help in advanced.
Well I got my answer today while trying to do it via the update way. I got an error that my tablet wasn't able to upgrade because the OS is compressed something about Boot WIM. SMH.

Issues
I'm having issues too. I don't think the 800 has enough space to do the install. The 801 seems like a better option due to the 16gb of storage, vs the 8gb on the 800.

I will try it this some time this week. Thanks.
No luck
Apparently I can't because the memory is full so I basically can't do anything with this POS. I can't back it up or restore it or add anything to it, it actually runs out of disk space when uninstalling stuff.
I successfully installed Windows 10 on my TW-801 I first installed internally (internal installation failed) and then installed again via the sdcard (so you have to burn the win image to the sdcard for the second install in addition to doing the download for the first install). The second time Windows 10 was activated. I am also running Ubuntu with VMWare on a virtual machine on this tablet. Windows 10 is alot better than 8.1 on this tablet. I think even though the internal installation fails it saves the Windows 10 activation code and the second install works because it is not a download and is directly from the cd or in this case the sd. Also, during the first download (that fails) two files are created on the c drive that I copied to the sdcard that I had already burned the win image on it - I don't know if that did anything or not.

Enable Adoptable Storage

Hello Folks!
This is my first contribution to the G5 Forum
! ADOPTABLE STORAGE !
You can simply enable it on the build.prop. Search for:
Code:
ro.lge.adoptable_storage=false
And change it to:
Code:
ro.lge.adoptable_storage=true
Reboot Your G5 and go in-to the Settings
Choose Storage and USB
Click on Your SD Card
Format as Internal Storage
Follow the Instructions and You're done!
Simple, or not!? I found it while playing with the build.prop.
More is coming soon! Join my Community to stay Informed

If anyone can push better/english Screenshots... Please provide it! Thanks!
Are you guy serious ?
Enabling adoptable storage is that simple ?
I'll give it a try when back at home, but with only 32Gb of internal, that's a good news !
This is the method with root I imagine... Also maybe update the first post to include a way without root? I saw some methods in other sites and posts. But not sure if it would work for the G5

Really cool but doesnt seem to work with 64GB card.. At least mine is kinda crashing the phone when trying to use it as internal.. Have to go to recovery and fix it again to use it as external storage.. Any idea??? It's a sandisk 64GB

You're right... Don't know what the Problem is. I think it's just a matter of time to get it work. I don't want to do any Experiments before we have access to a Stock Firmware Restore. Bricked my G5 3 times Now. I'm just happy that everything works again... Can't live without this Awesome Device x)
Cleanmaster i.e. doesnt recognize the correct size. It simply ignores the adopted size.
With sdcard used as portable it does show the correct size. Somewhere i read that adopting can actually make a phone slower because it doesnt use the internal fast storage anymore or maybe i misunderstood this...... Looks like this option might not coming that handy as generally thought.
My computer doesn't show the sdcard volume when the phone is plugged.
I think this don't actually work. Just show it on phone screen, but that's all.
And the S7 methos seems to work (even without root) on the G5. I'll give it a try.

[HUAWEI] Android Q GSI

So, as has probably been spotted in various places, Google dropped an Android Q GSI here recently.
One thing it requires (which breaks because Huawei, of course) is AVB support. Looks like init is unable to find the vbmeta image to verify and so it throws it's hands up with a "screw you, I'm going home".
Fortunately, this is relatively easy to work around - I have it booting on a Mate 9 that's been upgraded to EMUI 9, and I wouldn't be surprised if others have the same issue.
In any case, if this might be the reason why you're not booting, copy the attached file into /system/lib64 using TWRP or something.
There's other things broken on it - but that'll get it booting at least.
EDIT:
Link to patched Q GSI (GMS arm64 QPP2.190228.021):
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1dnEKJbjoiGhHuL6BLM8qXXyBFOKkE1bD
The only thing changed from the Google distributed image is the replacement of /system/lib64/libfs_mgr.so.
I will give that a try..
What are you doing for the selinux deniels?

In the bit of playing I did, wifi to unsecured networks works, secured does nothing. Most of the apps included seem to work - but I didn't get too far into playing with it.
Can't say anything about cellular, as the device I loaded it on has a dud modem. It does read imei 1 successfully, though, so it might work on another device.

Hmm. I've heard mixed reports.
I've only tried it on the one device - MHA-AL00, EMUI 9.0.1.150 base. I figured it might be relevant to other people since there were a fair number of people on the main website post commenting on problems with AVB, which led me to that workaround.
I installed it with twrp over adb:
adb push libfs_mgr.so /tmp
adb shell
mkdir /system_root
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system /system_root
cat /tmp/libfs_mgr.so > /system_root/system/lib64/libfs_mgr.so
reboot
On reboot, after a long wait (seems to take a minute to get to boot animation, that's Huawei for you), it came up to the welcome screen.
Edit - changed cp / chmod / chcon to cat, as it doesn't replace the file, keeping it's previous permissions & security label.
I think it will be better if you make a Q IMG that include the fixes

There's no reason for it not to. All that the patch I applied does is make it so that Android doesn't go looking for vbmeta information, so if that's the reason it fails to boot elsewhere this might allow it to work. If the image from Google already works, or it otherwise gets to the Android boot animation, this build won't do anything for you.
It booted on my MediaPad M5 but with no wifi, it stuck at "saved" but never mind, i just wanted to see the Q 2 beta, your fix might work as well with other unbootable roms like Pixel experience.

I don't know about using it on Pie builds - init on Q is dynamically linked, on Pie it's a static binary, so you'd have to patch /init to make that change. Whether it would help or not, I don't know.

For my own use ( see https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/how-to-force-reinstall-nook-simple-t3971367 for details ), I have put the needed updates into a new NookManager1.2.2 package (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kdlabh09txkx3k9/NookManager1.2.2.img?dl=0 ) so that it can be used for Nook Simple Touch 1.2.2 directly with updates described here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/development/nst-g-updating-nookmanager-t3873048), thanks to nmyshkin (https://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=5562185).
Hello -- Not sure if anyone reads this anymore....
I'm trying to root a NST. I believe I've created the micro sd properly, and when I insert it and reboot, I see "Nookmanager Loading...". But then it just hangs there.
I've used a 32gb class 10 card. I have seen elsewhere that I should not use anything higher than class 6. Could this be the problem?

I don't think the class is the problem but your NST might be struggling with the 32 gb size.

Thanks for that tip. Is there a *minimum* size I need to use for Nookmanager1.2.2?

Probably 4 gb. The backups are compressed, but I don't recall offhand the size.

I have a 2gb, and then next larger is 32gb. I guess that means I could root, but then not have enough room for a backup. And I'm guessing making a backup is advisable? Is there anyway to get back to stock w/o having made a backup?

OK, I should have checked before my last response. The original thread specifies 512 mb as a minimum, room enough for NookManager and a backup.

I just tried with the 2gb, as googling suggested that many others had used that. And I'm still getting the same issue: I see "NookManager Loading...." in font of normal darkness right when I boot up, and then after hanging like that for 20 seconds, that text fades to the point where I can hardly see it, and nothing happens but that.

I guess it's possible that the image is faulty. It's not difficult to update the original NookManager card yourself. You can follow the link referenced in the OP which leads to my update instructions. That may work out better for you.

Thanks, I appreciate your helping me through this. The person who first told me about rooting NSTs warned me against using sd cards higher than class 6. This thread seems to hint at the same issue, esp. with class 10. I've been using class 10. It is hard to find anything lower, but I just ordered a class 4 from eBay and I guess I'll wait to see if that works any better.

Yes, I've seen the warnings about class 10, even with the Nook Tablet, but I've not encountered problems. As you say, other than a special order, its hard to come by anything that's not class 10. The NookManager card I've used for many years is a SanDisk class 10 Ultra. Never had a problem with it. YMMV.

Thanks very much again. I'll give the special order card a try when it arrives, and if it doesn't, I guess I'll try to update the original NookManager, as you first suggested.
Is it possible to downgrade a Nook's firmware to 1.2.1 in order to use the original NookManager? Or maybe that's just more trouble than it could possibly be worth.

There's no sense in "downgrading" to FW 1.2.1. While you're waiting for the card to arrive I'd sure give yourself a chance to make your own NookManager update. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Well you were right: I was able to successfully root the device with a class 10 sd card by changing the scripts and replacing the jars in the way you instruct here. Thank you!!
Unfortunately I'm not able to establish any successful internet connection with either wifi source I use in my home. Any thoughts on why that might be? (I was having connectivity issues before I rooted it, too.) -- Actually, the device does say I'm successfully connected, it's just that the browser doesn't work and I also cannot connect to the Amazon App Store for Android (which, as you know, is a default app option on the rooted device).
Maybe I should just say what I'm trying to achieve: I'd like to use the NST as an external e-ink screen. So all I really need is a way to work with txt files that can be saved to an sd card. It would be nice, too, if I could email them to myself or otherwise upload them to the cloud from the NST, but that's not essential.
Any tips on how I might achieve that limited functionality even if I can't fix these connectivity issues?
Thanks again!

I was able to install Jota via an apk on sd, so that's a start (for this n00b)!

There is likely nothing wrong with your wifi. Reading a little further in the NookManager update thread you will see that the Amazon App Store has been dead for a long time. The same is true for the stock browser. You can uninstall both (for the stock browser that just entails deleting the apk file from /system/app and rebooting.) Also in that same post is a copy of Opera Mobile. That browser will work. You can side-load it if you need a browser.
As for email, either some version of k9 or the stock aosp email client will work. If you follow the link in my signature you will find a list of apps I run. One is the stock email with a link. You can search the forum for k9. I posted it somewhere for somebody long ago but don't remember exactly where.

Thanks so much. For various reasons, I decided to flash back to stock and then re-root. My NST then ended up with many more apps on it than it did the first time. And I also now see more of the Nook's rooted file structure, too. Not sure what was different.
My main task right now is updating the uImage and uRamdisk files with these here. My understanding is that this is required to get host mode working for an external keyboard. But I have no idea how to go about doing this. Any tips on that would be gratefully received!

These are the instructions I have used for changing kernals: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...issue-explanation-added.1563645/post-24168019
There is also a CWM kernal update file somewhere on the forum, but that would require preparing yet another card with CWM, etc. If you have ADB working, the earlier solution would be simplest.
