ROM recommendation with OTA and fingerprint - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Hello,
My wife uses the MiUi12 v20.6.18Android Pie ROM but with some errors like loosing the fingerprints after a few reboots or only to choos .ogg for whatsapp.
Update is difficult, because no OTA update and I don't want to config the whole thing again after an full wipe and update.
So,
which ROM would you recommend with OTA, nonroot and banking app compatibility and not many bugs?
Thanks in advance,
Marco

I've been using PixelExperience ROM for about 6 month, didn't found any bug so far (at least for my use case), banking app working, OTA and consistent regular update each month. it's also already include the google apps and have good battery live. fingerprint works, also have face unlock if you're into that.

try resurrection remix if you want customizations , if you are going for stability the go for PA Quartz .
It's one of the best and all banking apps are working.

[Help] Back after long time, huge amount of confusion

Hello,
It's been almost a little over a year since I was last really into android customization. Since it's been so long it has become clear to me that my phone is outdated in many ways. I'm still running OxygenOS 2.2.1 with Android 5.1.1. I've been wanting to update up to Android N (7.x.x) for a long time now, but haven't seen any real stable roms or haven't really had the time to look for one. Now I've finally found my self with free time and ready upgrade my rom. I've just faced couple of problems, I can't really find what should I do when upgrading from 5.1.1 to 7.x.x since no-one is really doing that anymore. I remember reading sometime back that if you dont have the right firmwares you'll brick ur phone, and I wouldn't really want to go through that hassle at the moment. Is it still a thing or should it be just fine for me to flash a new rom just on top of this? (Ofc with clearing memory etc) Other question that is in my mind is that is there any critical bugs in Android N roms? It's bit unclear to me since there are such many roms that have their status as work in progress or beta etc, but some roms have status as stable. Are there any roms that I should clearly avoid? Im not new to this so I don't really need any deep info how to do everything etc, just a bit of a oversight on how things are going atm.
Thanks.
first of all is ur device rooted?? If yes then install the latest twrp recovery...then take a backup.. and flash any nougat rom which u like...If at all u would need Volte support then u l have to flash the 3.5.7 firmware..or else the 3.1.0 firmware works fine with most of the nougat roms..some nougat roms i would recommend are AICP, Resurrection Remix and AOSP extended .... In my suggestion u should probably first upgrade the Oxygen Os on ur device through official updates via OTA atleast upto the 3.5.6 firmware
there's no need to update until 3.5.6, unless you aren't going to plan staying with OOS [the only "stable" firmware which provides you VoLTE working, but it's still M-based and not N].
as @mhd athiq said, unlock your bootloader [just in case you still haven't done it before] then update your TWRP recovery to the latest version.
then flash the incrementals OTAs until OOS 3.1.x and you are good to go to flash any custom ROM which is N-based.
to avoid any mistake, please make a EFS backup via terminal [just to have a backup of your modems] and save the files to a safe location.
I don't have a specific ROM to suggest to you, but in my experience I have found the CAF/AOSP-based ones to be the ones with the best battery backup and less bugs then LOS-based ones.
I have used happily for a few months CypherOS version 3.5.1 [not the latest one, I find it quite unstable as the developers tried to implement OMS].
sidenote:
flashing N-based custom ROMs upon OOS 3.5.6 firmwares gives random reboots and unstable network in many cases/scenarios.
so don't update to that OOS version unless you have a mandatory VoLTE feature required [but you'll have to live with random reboots and poor network stability].

Is there a Custom ROM / Rooted ROM for the S8 with automatic / easy Updates

Hello everyone,
I got a new S8 and am wondering, which ROM to choose. I have used Superman Rom on my S7 for a long time now and was happy with it, despite the fact that I had to wipe with every update.
Titanium Backup made it a lot easier - it still was a lot of work.
So my Question:
Is there a ROM which can be updated without wiping?
What I want is basically ROOT, google apps and if possible the original (or improved) Camera App from the S8. And it schould be stable.
I am aware of lineageOS, but the S8 support seems not to be so good by now.
Thanks for every hint,
H

ok so basically
stock s8 firmware rooted : no more Ota and many root related limitations etc, but maybe able to flash Ota manually not sure
s8 firmware based custom roms: as with every new update the rom is rebased to latest firmware, always clean install always as the rom is a modified firmware, so always different (of course dirty flash might work but often result in issues of all kinds)
and with aosp based roms , most of the time yes, to update you can just flash rom then gapps and then just wipe caches/dalvik and reboot is its the same rom as the rom is the same and in fact just stock android so no big changes between builds.
But yes it's annoying but clean install is ALWAYS the best option, and easy update = no rooting
and for stability, the closer to stock the rom is , the most stable it would be. (and good camera = forget about aosp)
so I would recommend you batstock rom or batman rom (s8 version of superstock or superman), but update without wiping, except on unrooted ... not really
Thanks for your detailed reply - That's what I was afraid of to hear.
I will try to live with the limitations of non rooted stock - otherwise Batman or Batstock will be the next to try.

Should Root or Wait for Update!?

What you guys suggest!? I want to root my Phone but I am waiting for The Oreo Update
Should I wait Further or not!?
Personally I was wondering the same, but decided a week or so ago to unlock the bootloader and install lineage 14.1. Happy with my decision, it actually fixed a bug I had with NFC only working occasionally. Also good to be able to use my root apps again. I won't upgrade to Oreo until after the official Oreo release and developers have had a chance to fix the issues there seems to be with Bluetooth calling, votle, imei, etc.
So my answer would be sure go ahead, as long as you know what you're doing it for and understand the risks.
I agree with NZedPred, nothing wrong with rooting and installing custom rom, but I wouldn't install any Oreo rom until/if official Oreo for this device gets released. Just too many problems.
Same here waiting for Oreo before root

If you can fix the various common problems that may come with custom ROMs, go ahead. Otherwise, you could stay stock and wait for the update. It all depends on you if you want to have the latest Oreo (8.1 and the latest security patches).
If you just want to root, it's fine too but you'll still lose warranty.
Not sure, i have zero problems on ResurrectionRemix Oreo.
I was thinking the same and now i'm glad that i did it. RR working like a champ.
some custom rom are stable and u can use for daily driver
I'll wait. There's nothing revolutionary about Android 8, the custom roms are almost always buggy, and also all these reports of IMEI 0 are troublesome.

Favourite rom and why?

Hey guys,
I'll soon be getting the Poco F2 Pro and like I've done for previous devices with an active rom development community, just wondering what is your current rom of choice and for what reasons.
This can be a place just to share your experience of the various roms available to us and provide a summary of what you like about it, frequency of updates, battery, features, bugs etc.
Looking forward to hearing back...
oneOS until they didnt having some crazy idea to charge weekly updates 2e,so they stop to developing it because a lot of people didnt like this idea.
xiaomi.eu is also good. I am using it instead of oneOS

Thanks for the reply.
What do you like about it, in comparison to stock rom etc?
Anyone any other suggestions? I see there's over 15 custom roms for this , which is great, though would be keen to hear people's experience with some of them.
I'm currently tempted by Havoc, just because I've enjoyed that rom on previous devices. Just I wish to avoid any bugs and just want a feature-rich stable rom, no background drain or significant things broken...
Xiaomi.eu is a good rom. I am on weekly. Every friday I got updates, also you have stable. On weekly ,you get first the latest updates from china ROM. Battery is also good too. No bugs or any bug problems with this ROM

Nice, stable roms are always a winner.
Have you tried any of the custom roms?
I used to love custom roms in general but then found myself just valuing stable stock much better these days. I do miss some features from custom roms though, but stock does just seem the best in some ways.
Unless someone can suggest a custom feature-packed rom that doesn't sacrifice performance...
Only OneOS that eas the best rom after bootleggers that I have on 8pro
for aosp like custom rom ,i'll choose crdroid ,because its stable enough , lots of customization , up t0 date .
for miui based = xiaomi.eu, im using it now , had to switch to xiaomi.eu from crdroid because of the camera .
and for android 10 will choose evolution rom.

Is it possible to use banking apps and payment apps with xiaomi.eu rom? Does it have any contraindications to use xiaomi.eu instead of stock? Thank you.

Thanks for the response.
When you say the camera, is that because you missed miui camera and prefer it over gcam? That's my thoughts too.... Will try crdroid on Tues when I can unlock, but I almost sense I'll go to stock miui eu but rooted and debloated

Last stable and weekly EU rom pass safety net and have the playstore certified whitout root.
xiaomi.eu is the best one for me.
Since end of January, the weekly builds are good, they pass safetynet, play store is certified, google pay works, all my bank apps work, even enterprise office365 is fine (without root of course, I haven't found any hack for this with magisk activated).
MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi phone app, no add, various tweaks included, more responsive and better battery life than stock.
A no brainer if you want a MIUI based ROM!
This is now my daily driver for my work phone!
Just missing an android 11 fully compatible TWRP (impossible to remove these xiaomi.eu icons with the current version) for Nirvana

Does call recording work too?
Is dual sim active with a 5G sim?
Xiaomi.eu automatically updates itself via OTA when there are new builds?
Then I unlock the bootloader, install the TWRP, install the weekly xiaomi.eu and all the banking apps, playstore, etc. do they work or do I have to do something else?
Thank you.

I'm on Xiaomi.eu too and I can confirm that call recording works well because of Xiaomi dialer in this ROM, there is even an option for automatic recording.
As for the 5G and dual sim - from what I know this is technically unpossible. There probably are no phones at the moment which support dual sim with 5G.

As for the dual sim with 5G, I mean one sim in 5G and one in 4G. If you read in the instruction manual it says that they would have activated this function with an update ...

Do you have a link to the TWRP you used to install xiaomi.eu?
I think I want to try it, especially if you say there are no problems with banking apps...
But you say root doesn't work?
I am currently using ANCIENTOS, a lot of customization and options and especially a brightness control for AOD.
The autonomy is very good and the FOD is fast.
The play store is not certified, but my banking application is working.

Android 11 ROM Suggestion

I am having the 4GB variant of Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1. I am looking for an android 11 custom ROM with the following being the key requirements.
Fingerprint sensor working
Working VoLTE, WiFi and good network reception
Working banking apps
Stable usage without stutters/lags in UI
Not into gaming, So prefers Higher battery backup over high-end performance
OTA updates (optional)
Kindly Suggest a stable ROM with satisfies ALL/MOST of the above requirements
all time best os HAVOC 4.4. pixel experience plus latest update is also very tempting but i want more performance so i decided to stay in havoc.
FP working
volte works wifi nd network working
default not rooted so bank apps work im using magisk and patched safety net.
no lags or stutter encountered. i did a clean flash means wiped everything along with internal storage. also don't use migrate, install and setup everything from scratch because gonna stay in this os for long time.
ota updates are monthly i think.
if you encounter lags or stutter then its not os problem. you have to flash fastboot pie rom. its like mandatory for our device to flash fastboot rom for every six months to get stable performance. default kernel is darkonah and im using gaming version of darkonah which is venus kernel you can use darkonah z to get excellent battery backup without errors coz of changed kernel.
